Richard V. Barger Jr.
KEEDYSVILLE - Richard Vernon Barger Jr., 52, of 4834 Mount Briar Road, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 18, 1946, in Washington County, he was the son of the late Richard Vernon Barger Sr. and the late Edith Eleanor Miller McAfee.
He served with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his stepmother, Peggy Barger of Hagerstown; his stepfather, Gerald McAfee of Keedysville; three sons, Richard Todd Barger, John Gerald Barger and Jerry Wayne Barger, all of Hagerstown; six sisters, DiAnna Kay Deener, Shirley Timmons, Kathy Grimm, Debbie Herbert and Emma Jean Snavely, all of Keedysville, and Donna Jean Showe of Hagerstown; four brothers, Anthony Gerald McAfee of Hagerstown, Gary Lee McAfee and Michael McAfee, both of Keedysville, and Vernon Thomas of Virginia Beach, Va.; a stepsister, Karen Wiley of Hagerstown; two stepbrothers, Denny Barger of Williamsport and Danny Barger of Hagerstown; and three step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a half brother, Richard Barger III.
Services will be Monday at 8 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Joseph Burdette will officiate.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
Gerald R. Brown
Gerald Russell Brown, 74, of 1139 Outer Drive, Hagerstown died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born Dec. 19, 1924, in Smithsburg, he was the son of the late Rueben and Olive Page Burhman Brown.
He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service, where he served in World War II and the Korean War. Later he retired from Mack Truck after 25 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, V.F.W. Post 10, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Hagerstown, Eagles Club, Inc., Waynesboro, Pa., Fleet Reserve Association and A.A.R.P.
He is survived by his wife, Darce J. Wolfensberger Brown; two daughters, Vickie Lynn Skipper of Marion, S.C., and Kristi M. Brennon, Washington, D.C.; one brother, Basil Lee Brown of Sunnyside, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Brown.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Mary M. Miller
SMITHSBURG - Mary M. Miller, 88, of Rt. 3, Smithsburg, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Julia Manor Health Care Center, Hagerstown.
Born Feb. 3, 1911, in Smithsburg, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Lilyann V. Brown Bowman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman E. Miller, who died in 1971.
She was a member of Willow Brook Seventh-day Adventist Church, Boonsboro.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen V. Dewease of Smithsburg, and M. Rosalie Forrest of Waynesboro, Pa.; two step-daughters, Lillian Pryor of Smithsburg and Pauline Lowe of Fairfield, Pa.; one step-son, H. Fred Miller of Smithsburg; three grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and a number of step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Richard E. Miller, five sisters, Orpha Shilling, Maggie Pryor, Annie Bowman, Naomi Bowman and Esther Wolfe; two brothers, Richard Bowman and Wilbur Bowman; and one step-daughter, Gladys Bigelow.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. William McCall will officiate. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Thelma P. Carpenter
Thelma Pauline Carpenter, 82, of 16704 Blackberry Lane, Hagerstown, died Friday, March 12, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 5, 1916, in Cearfoss, Md., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Bernard and Mary Alice Hollinger Spickler.
She was a member of Broadfording Bible Brethren Church.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Carpenter; three daughters, Mildred Gordon and Mary Lappe, both of Hagerstown, and Evelyn Smith of Marlowe, W.Va.; two sons, Harry Carpenter and Larry Carpenter, both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Margaret Hinman and Mildred Hull, both of Hagerstown; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, David W. Spickler and William E. Spickler.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Broadfording Brethren Church, 12523 Broadfording Church Road, Hagerstown. The Rev. William H. Freed, Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on this evening from 7 to 9 at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown and Tuesday one hour prior to the services at the church.

Charles W. Miller, Jr.
Charles William Miller, Jr., 76, of 442 Jefferson Street, Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 19, 1923, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles William, Sr. and Carrie Jane Shepherd Miller.
He owned and operated a trucking company for 50 years and later worked for Roper Eastern Mfg.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II.
He was a member of New Alliance Church.
He was a life member of AMVETS Post 10, V.F.W., Post 1936 and Military Order of the Cootie.
He is survived by three sons, Rodney A. Miller of Hagerstown, Ronnie Miller of Texas, and Robert Miller of Iowa; four sisters, Faye Moser of Hagerstown, Betty Hopkin and Mary Ellen Barnhart, both of Florida, and Doris Sheldon of North Carolina; two brothers, Hartle G. Miller of Hagerstown, and Jackie Miller of Florida; two half-sisters, Beverley Beall of Hagerstown and Linda Hanion of Baltimore; two half-brothers, Richard Millers and Terry Miller, both of Hagerstown; and several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Todd Stroud will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

Norton R. Ault
BRUNSWICK, Md. - Norton Rudolph Ault, 75, 811 East Potomac Street, Brunswick, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at College View Nursing Center, Frederick.
Born Feb. 24, 1924, in Brunswick, he was the son of the late Ernest Payne and Jessica Derflinger Ault.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Peters Ault, who died in 1994.
He was retired from B&O Railroad, Brunswick, as a brakeman.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.
He was a member of Steadman-Keenan Post 96 American Legion, Brunswick.
He is survived by two sons, Norton R. Ault Jr. of Sharon Springs, N.Y., and Richard D. Ault of Brunswick; and one grandson, Rudolph R. Ault of Sharon Springs.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Phyllis Wastler, Madeline Asher and Alice Sheppard; and one brother, Douglas Ault.
There will be no services.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 7 p.m. at their residence at 811 East Potomac Street, Brunswick.
