Stephen Merriner
WILLIAMSPORT - Stephen Merriner, 86, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Homewood Retirement Center, died on Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Western Maryland Center in Hagerstown.
Born Dec. 18, 1912, in Winchester, Va., he was the son of the late Sherman and Margaret Loy Merriner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances E. Merriner, in 1995.
He was employed by the A&P store on North Potomac Street, Hagerstown, for 25 years.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.
He was of Lutheran faith.
He was a member of Southside Bowl Pioneer League.
He is survived by three daughters, Margaret L. Ferraro of Springfield, Va., F. Ann Wilson and Susan L. Rippeon, both of Hagerstown; one sister, Hallie Johnson of Winchester, Va., five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond H. Shriver will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mary E. Harrington
LILESVILLE, N.C. - Mary Elizabeth Gathings Harrington, 98, of Lilesville, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Anson Community Hospital.
Born Feb. 22, 1900, in Anson County, she was the daughter of the late William F. and Polly Grooms Gathings.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank G. Harrington.
She was the oldest member of Mount Beulah Baptist Church, Wadesboro, N.C.
She is survived by three daughters, Dorothy Smith of Hagerstown, Gladys Goodman of Wadesboro, and Ruby Sheppard of Lilesville; one sister, Hattie Belle Adams of Monroe, N.C.; 13 grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce Harrington and Charlie Prentice Harrington.
Funeral services were held today at 3 p.m. at Mount Beulah Baptist Church, Wadesboro. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Celeste Phelps
LINTHICUM, Md. - Celeste Phelps, 68, of Linthicum, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Linthicum.
Born March 21, 1930, in Annapolis, she was the daughter of the late Zachariah Turner and Mae Chaney.
She was employed at Crofton Convalescent Center as executive director and administrator for 35 years, retiring in 1986. She was a corporate partner at Crofton.
She was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, James Phelps; two daughters, Pamela Kimmell of Greencastle, Pa., and Susan Macey of Brooklyn Park, Md.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Epiphany Episcopal Church. The Rev. Phebe McPherson officiated.

Josephine N. Green
BOONSBORO - Josephine Newcomer "Jo" Green, 76, of 8507 Mapleville Road, and formerly of Beaver Creek and Carlisle, Pa., died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 2, 1922, in Boonsboro, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Howard and Lottie Eccard Newcomer.
Her husband, Russell Green, died in 1998.
She formerly was employed at the U.S. Navy Depot in Mechanicsburg, Pa., and retired in 1977 from Fort Detrick, Frederick, Md.
She attended Christ Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.
She was a former member of Smithsburg Area Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one son, Hilbert N. Gossage of Newville, Pa.; one brother, William Newcomer of Carlisle; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Newcomer.
Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. Burial will be in Beaver Creek Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Daniel P. Neikirk
WILLIAMSPORT - Daniel Paul "Danny" Neikirk, 84, formerly of 17621 Heisterboro Road, Hagerstown, and a resident of Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Homewood.
Born May 19, 1914, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Clayton Elmer and Irene Agnes Smith Neikirk.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He was retired as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service after 40 years.
He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport.
He was a member of AARP and National Association of Letter Carriers.
He is survived by three sisters, Ethel Neikirk Poole and Bernice Neikirk Bowers, both of Williamsport, and Martha Neikirk Miller of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Sowers, Emma Bartle, Helen Kershner and Ruth Guyton; and one brother, Harry Neikirk.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 37 W. Potomac St., Williamsport. The Rev. W. Gregory Martin and the Rev. Karen Stiles will officiate.
Private graveside services will be held at Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Harry E. Sibert
Harry Earl Sibert, 73, of 42 Elizabeth St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Jan. 30, 1999, at Comanche Memorial Hospital in Lawton, Okla.
Born Sept. 10, 1925, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Tressel Earl and Louise Howell Sibert.
His wife, Dorothy Lorraine Sibert, died in 1989.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was employed by Reynolds & Reynolds in Hagerstown, and previously by Tyler Roofing and Fairchild Aircraft.
He was a member of Calvary Temple Church in Williamsport.
He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, AMVETS Post 10, Redmen 84 of Williamsport, Eagles of Hagerstown, Western Enterprise Fire Co., North American Rod and Gun Club, National Rifle Association, National Trappers Association of America, and AARP.
He is survived by three daughters, Joyce C. Palmer of Martinsburg, W.Va., Gloria J. Murray and Rosalie L. Ernst, both of Hagerstown; two sons, Edward F. Grove III and Harry Gerald Sibert, both of Hagerstown; four sisters, Lola Boyles and Dorothy Sibert, both of Martinsburg, Shirley Dick of Hedgesville, W.Va., and Becky Custis of Florida; two brothers, Warren T. Sibert of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Harold E. Sibert of Martinsburg; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Marga Sharp of Lawton.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Knipe; three brothers, Edward Sibert, Joseph Sibert and Charles Sibert.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert V. Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park in Hagerstown, with military honors by American Legion Morris Frock Post 42.
