Mary A. Moore
BOONSBORO - Mary Alice Moore, 90, a resident of Reeder's Memorial Home, and formerly of 105 W. Antietam St., Sharpsburg, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 29, 1908, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late Charles R. and Della M. Drenner Renner.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Earle A. Moore.
She attended Sharpsburg School.
She retired from Porter Chemical Company.
She was a member of Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren.
She was a charter member of Antietam Lioness Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Lois E. Leatherman of Sharpsburg; two sons, James Maurice Moore of Funkstown and Roger E. Moore of Beaver Creek, Md.; two sisters, Ruby Dick of Hagerstown and Martha Miller of Sharpsburg; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter; a sister, Orpha Spielman; and a brother, William Renner.
A memorial service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren, 123 E. Main St., Sharpsburg. The Rev. Jerry Carpenter will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery in Sharpsburg at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Reeder's Memorial Home, Activities Department, 141 S. Main St., Boonsboro, MD 21713; Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren; or to a charity of one's choice.

Sarah J. Souders
Sarah Jane Souders, 98, of 1052 Corbett St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 30, 1900, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Rebecca Pensinger Crunkleton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph L. Souders.
She retired from Eyerly's Department Store in Hagerstown.
She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Doris E. Crockett of Fairfax, Va., and Mary J. Crowther of Clifton, Va.; two sons, Donald L. Souders of Glendale, Ariz., and Charles W. Souders of Hagerstown; a sister, Mary Crunkleton of Hagerstown; a brother, Floyd Crunkleton of Smithsburg; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Lester Crunkleton, Paul Crunkleton, Preston Crunkleton and Charles Crunkleton.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; the family will receive friends Friday at noon at the funeral home.

Melva M. Guyer
WILLIAMSPORT - Melva M. Guyer, 95, of 154 N. Artizan St., Williamsport, and formerly of 919 View St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at Williamsport Retirement Village, Williamsport.
Born May 11, 1903, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late David Frank and Alma Leona Gearhart Miller.
She had worked as a lawyer's assistant; and at a local bank. She retired from the Hagerstown Police Department.
She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, Wesleyan Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women Circle Six, member and treasurer of the former Golden Rule Sunday School Class. She was a volunteer for functions at the church.
She did volunteer work at Hagerstown's Girl's Club, serving as treasurer; and Washington County Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by a son, Donald L. Guyer of Hagerstown; a granddaughter, Deborah A. Guyer of Hagerstown; a grandson, Brian L. Guyer of Hagerstown; and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 129 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard W. Simpson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday at noon at the church.

MAUGANSVILLE - Grace I. Newkirk, 88, formerly of 14024 Village Mill Drive, and El Passo, Ill., died Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 27, 1910, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Samuel L. Sr. and Molly M. Loudenslager Hall.
She was a retired employee of Fairchild Industries; and Hagerstown Shoe and Legging.
She attended Grace United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Francis "Fred" M. Newkirk; four daughters, Betty L. Reedy and Saundra Reeser, both of Hagerstown, Sonia Sullivan of Waynesboro, Pa., and Jayne Rockwell of Maugansville; a sister, Edna Shipley of Hagerstown; a brother, John W. Hull of Hagerstown; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert A. Mullenix; a granddaughter, Jacqueline Mullenix; a sister, Mary St. Clair; and two brothers, Samuel L. Hall Jr. and Robert A. Hall.
Services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Elsie M. Metzer
MYERSVILLE, Md. - Elsie M. Metzer, 91, of Myersville, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 24, 1907, in Wolfsville, Md., she was the daughter of the late Jacob U. and Tabitha Palmer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Metzer Sr., in 1977.
She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Wolfsville.
She is survived by eight daughters, Fae T. Souders and Rhea F. Poling, both of Braddock Heights, Md., Delphine L. Zimmerman and Sue L. Schill, both of Myersville, Gaynell R. Myers of Fairplay, Christina C. Carbaugh of Big Pool, Judy E. Keller of Jefferson, Md., and Elsie L. Bell of Sharpsburg; two sons, Robert L. Metzer of Myersville and Zane L. Metzer of Hagerstown; 42 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Ralph E. Metzer, Charles William Metzer Jr. and Jerry M. Metzer; two sisters, Pearl Marker and Reba Barkdoll; and six brothers, Sylvester Palmer, Roy Palmer, Charles L. Palmer, Albert Palmer, Ralph Palmer and Russell S. Palmer.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Salem United Methodist Church, Wolfsville. The Revs. Randall Reid and Hayden Sparks will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery, Wolfsville.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville.

Leroy A. Laird
Leroy Alton Laird, 74, of 10010 Coffman Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at Western Maryland Hospital Center.
Born May 30, 1924, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Laird.
He was employed as an inspector for Mack Trucks Inc., retiring in 1988. He was previously employed by Fairchild Aircraft.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the European Theater.
He was a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Leitersburg.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Violet May Rhine Laird; a daughter, Linda Teal of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Laurence Laird of Martinsburg, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Albert L. Leaf Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Daris Ford will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open at noon.
