Steven Zaharoff
WALKERSVILLE, Md. - Steven Zaharoff, 78, of Walkersville, died Friday, Feb. 12, 1999, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born March 12, 1920, in Marianna, Pa., he was the son of the late Fred and Anesia Zaharoff.
He graduated from Prosperity High School, Prosperity, Pa. and attended Beaver Falls College, Beaver Falls, Pa., on a football scholarship.
He served 21 years of active duty in the U.S. Army. He was an Army recruiter in Frederick. He also served in World War II and the Korean War. He received the Bronze Star for exemplary conduct in ground combat in the European Theater of Operations in 1945. He retired as a chief warrant officer and then pursued a 33-year career in civilian federal service at 1110th United States Army Signal Battalion, formerly known as the East Coast Telecommunications Center and East Coast Relay Center, Fort Detrick.
He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Francis Scott Key Post 11, American Legion, American Federation of Government Employees. and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Marie Zaharoff; one daughter, Shirley Ann Fernandes of the Azores; three sons, Steven Zaharoff of Coral Springs, Fla., Michael Zaharoff of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Patrick Zaharoff of Woodsboro, Md.; one sister, Martha Pettit of Washington, Pa.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 118 East Second Street, Frederick. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 9. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Donald E. Mongan, Sr.
WILLIAMSPORT - Donald Edmond "Pete" Mongan, Sr., 81, of 20 West Salisbury Street, Williamsport, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born Feb. 12, 1918, in Leitersburg, Md., he was the son of the late Hubert B. and Camille E. McCardell Mongan.
He retired in 1982 from Washington County Housing and Urban Development. Prior to that he was employed at Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown, and for the City of Hagerstown.
He was a member of Virginia Avenue Church of God, Hagerstown.
He was a charter member of Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum, Hagerstown, Marlowe Ruritan, Marlowe, W.Va., and A.A.R.P.
He is survived by his wife Susan P. Murray Mongan; one daughter, Brenda S. Brennan of Clear Spring; three sons, Charles Mongan and Donald E. Mongan, Jr., both of Hagerstown, and Thomas Mongan of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one step-daughter, Diane S. Stockslager of Martinsburg, W.Va.; one sister, Ruth Barnhart of Fayetteville, Pa.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague Street, Williamsport. The Rev. A. Paul Harne will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. For the convenience of family and friends, the funeral home will be open Tuesday after 9 a.m.

Betty M. Ford
Betty Marie Ford, 76, of 15736 Shinham Road, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at her home.
Born July 8, 1922, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Claude McPherson and Edith Lucietta Bush Smith.
She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, Wheeler Carroll Ford; three daughters, Robin Creek of Hagerstown, Kym Diaz of Cambridge, Md., and Karen West of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; one son, Keith Ford of Mercersburg, Pa.; eight grandchildren, one niece and two nephews.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Mount Tabor Lutheran Cemetery, Fairview, Md. The Rev. Mary Amundson will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Lola B. Smith
SMITHSBURG - Lola B. Smith, 92, of South Main Street, Smithsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at Williamsport Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 7, 1906, in Greensburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles G. and Lucy Belle Dayhoff Fishack.
She was employed at Doubleday Company, Smithsburg, for 17 years.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg.
She was a member of Tuesday and Wednesday Circle, Mary and Martha Sunday School Class, L.C.W., Ravenwood Lutheran Village Volunteer, Hagerstown, A.A.R.P. and Sunshine Leisure Club, Smithsburg.
She is survived by one daughter, Joyce L. Schulz of Palm City, Fla.; four sons, John R. Smith, Jr., James M. Smith, and Richard F. Smith, all of Smithsburg, and Donald E. Smith of Hagerstown; twelve grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Bob Smith; four brothers, Jess Fishack, Riley Fishack, Jim Fishack and Charles Fishack, Sr.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Mark Walters will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
There will be no viewing.

Charles R. Kirby
Charles Raland Kirby, 83, of 11210 Lakeview Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at his home.
Born July 1, 1915, in Davy, W.Va., he was the son of the late Rufus Monroe and Florence Edna Morgan Kirby.
He retired from the State of Maryland.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Davis Kirby; two daughters, Sherry Colville, and Robyn Kirby, both of Parkville, Md.; one sister, Sylvia Kessel of Louisiana; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Estell Kirby; one son, Mark Kirby; four sisters, Gertrude Breashears, Carrie Armentrout, Jessie Stitchberry, and Ruth Elzey; and three brothers, Clarence Kirby, Orville Kirby, and William Kirby.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Scott A. Exline
Scott Auther Clinton "Pete" Exline, 55, of 17735 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at his home.
Born June 27, 1943, in Grafton, W.Va., he was the son of the late Auther Dequoy and Willa LaRue Canfield Exline.
He was employed as a truck driver by Roadway of Hagerstown, retiring in 1998. He previously owned and operated Exline Trucking in Sharpsburg.
He served in the U.S. Navy.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by his wife, Georgina A. Richardson Exline; five sons, Scott A. Exline II, Edmond D. Exline, James W. Exline, and Robert D. Exline, all at home, and Joseph L. Exline of Denver; five sisters, Wilda J. Exline, Vonda J. Stutler and Wyoma M. Gerkin, all of Grafton, Wanda J. Stutler of Cumberland, Md., and Idesta L. Exline of Hagerstown; four brothers, Charles R. Exline of Grafton, David L. Exline, Bernard N. Exline, and Thomas K. Exline all of Sharpsburg; and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Willard L. Exline, Lawrence O. Exline, Ed Exline, Darl E. Exline, and Denzil M. Exline.
Military graveside services will be held at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery, Grafton, at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.
