Mary E. Hemphill
Mary Elizabeth Hemphill, 99, of 610 Sunset Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born June 14, 1899, in Eckard, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Pape Lancaster.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Davis A. Hemphill, in 1977.
She retired from Maryland Ribbon Co. after 18 years of service.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Max L. Hemphill of Hagerstown.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Doris V. Rohr.
Graveside services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ann V. Atkins will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
Arrangements are by Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
Robert H. McPherson Sr.
Robert Henry McPherson Sr., 69, of 1010 Security Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at his home.
Born Sept. 3, 1929, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Joseph Henry and Pauline Virginia Stevens McPherson.
He is survived by four daughters, Robin Smith and Stephanie Huffman, both of Hagerstown, Joy Dailey of Arizona and Cindy Powell of North Carolina; two sons, Robert H. McPherson Jr. of Hagerstown and Joseph McPherson of Smithsburg; three sisters, Phyllis Thomas and Joanne Kelbaugh, both of Hagerstown, and Connie Bowman of Boonsboro; two brothers, Richard McPherson Sr. of Clear Spring and Howard McPherson of Hagerstown; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
Ruth H. Middlekauff
Ruth Hering Middlekauff, 78, of Hagerstown, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 19, 1920, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late William and Vada Jones Hering.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh E. Middlekauff, in 1989.
She was a member of Fountain Head Country Club; and Bridge Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Diane M. Doilney of Park City, Utah; two sons, Hugh E. Middlekauff and Victor H. Middlekauff, both of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; a niece; and a special friend, Robert Rosen of Hagerstown.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Jane Holt.
Memorial services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Fred M. Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Ralph H. Huntsberry
FAIRPLAY - Ralph Henry Huntsberry, 90, of 17820 Spielman Road, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 27, 1909, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Earl and Minnie Wilkinson Huntsberry.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Showe Huntsberry, in 1988.
He had been employed for 21 years as a machinist at Fairchild Aircraft. He retired from Washington County Board of Education.
He was a member of Manor Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Smith of Boonsboro; a son, Robert L. Huntzberry of Fairplay, with whom he lived; two brothers, Clyde Huntzberry of Fairplay and Donald Huntzberry of York, Pa.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Gigeous, Ruth Reese and Glendora Aleshire.
Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Lloyd H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

James W. Swain
HANCOCK - James W. Swain, 65, of Millstone Circle, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1933, in Little Orleans, Md., he was the son of the late William Webster and Maxine G. Schriver Swain.
He retired from Mack Trucks as a machinist.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member of Piney Plains United Methodist Church, Little Orleans.
He was a life member of VFW Post 655, McConnellsburg, Pa.; Webster B. Harrison Post 26 American Legion, Hancock; UAW Local 171; Mack Golden Bulldogs, Hagerstown; Loyal Order of Moose; and National Rifle Association.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen Bishop Swain, whom he married
Dec. 31, 1957; four daughters, Pamela Smith of Big Cove Tannery, Pa., Starla Ward of Franklin, Tenn., Tina Thomas of Greencastle, Pa., and Sherri Kratz of Hancock; a son, Dennis Swain of Hancock; six sisters, Shirley R. Keefer of Clear Spring, Norma M. Ridenour of Big Pool, E. Joanne Gordon of McConnellsburg, Barbara E. Rockwell of Nokomis, Fla., Delores M. Spielman of Mooresville, N.C., and Gloria J. Hutzel of Hagerstown; a brother, Gerald E. Swain of Hancock; 12 grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hancock Untied Methodist Church, 168 W. Main St., Hancock. The Rev. Edward James will officiate. Burial will be in Piney Plains United Methodist Cemetery, Little Orleans, with military honors by Tri-State Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church, which will be open from 2 to 9 p.m., and Tuesday one hour prior to services.

Vernon E. MacCumbee Sr.
Vernon E. MacCumbee Sr., 85, of Ringgold Pike, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 23, 1913, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late John Thomas and Cecilia Ver Potter MacCumbee.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vergie M. VanGosen MacCumbee, in 1994.
He retired from Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown.
He attended St. Peter's Catholic Church, Hancock.
He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Ann Henry and Lois L. MacCumbee of Hagerstown; two sons, Vernon E. "Bud" MacCumbee Jr. of Hagerstown and George W. MacCumbee of Baltimore; a stepson, Robert G. Wilson of Bel Air, Md.; six grandchildren; 10 step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Phillip T. MacCumbee; a stepdaughter, Tillie Fischer; and a brother, Gilbert MacCumbee.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, High Street, Hancock. The Rev. George W. Glick will be celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock. The funeral home will be open Monday from 2 to 9 p.m.
