Betty M. Plank
SMITHSBURG - Betty Mae Plank, 69, of 11926 Iroquois Ave., died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 22, 1929, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John and Cora Mae Robinson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard Plank Sr., in 1995.
She was previously employed in the cafeteria at St. Mary's Catholic School for 28 years.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She was previously a volunteer at Washington County Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by two sons, Larry E. Plank of Hagerstown and Scott A. Plank of Smithsburg; five sisters, Orvetta Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, Helen Grove of Clear Spring, Beatrice Irene Embly and Hazel Schwab, both of Boonsboro, and JoAnn Gouff of Chewsville; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, James H. Plank Jr.; and a sister, Rhoda Hykes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 226 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Prayers will be said Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Frank James
SHARPSBURG - Frank James, 60, of Sharpsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999, at his home.
Born March 16, 1938, in Tennessee, he was the son of the late Samuel and Bonnie Livesay James.
He attended Sherwood High School and Gaithersburg High School.
He worked for Heritage Builders of Gaithersburg, Md., for more than 23 years as a foreman of Heavy Equipment Operations. He also owned Frank James Welding of Gaithersburg.
He was a Baptist.
His followed horse racing and football, with the Dallas Cowboys as his favorite team.
He is survived by his wife, Clara L. James; four children, Roger L. Walker of Damascus, Md., Preston L. Knight of South Carolina, Frank E. James of New Market, Md., and Betty L. Hensley of Sharpsburg; two sisters, Ella Mae Finneyfrock of Poolesville, Md., and Mildred Arnold of Germantown, Md.; four brothers, Roy James of Mount Airy, Md., Harless James of Derwood, Md., Johnny James of Oklahoma and Jesse James of Sharpsburg; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Muriel H. Barber Funeral Home, 21525 Laytonsville Road, Laytonsville, Md. Burial will be in Seals Farm Cemetery, Etchison, Md.
Friends may visit Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pauline W. V. Ries
BEAUFORT, S.C. - Pauline Whittington VanFossen Ries, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Beaufort.
Born Sept. 29, 1914, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Esther Pontesmith Whittington.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Francis W. VanFossen and Albert K. Ries.
She was a homemaker and a seamstress. She crocheted baby blankets for Navy Relief.
She attended Community Bible Church, Beaufort.
She was a member of AMVETS Auxiliary.
She is survived by two daughters, Sandra F. Kauffman of Lauderhill, Fla., and Kay F. Neal of Vestal, N.Y.; one son, Robert Lee VanFossen of Beaufort; one half-sister, Ruth Whittington Pieto of Front Royal, Va.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Alice M. Metz
Alice Mae Metz, of 142 Buttercup Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 18, 1922, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Garfield and Nellie Creager Groshon.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lauren M. Ridge, who died in 1950.
She was retired in 1984 from Washington County Hospital as assistant director of nursing.
She was in the Cadet Nurses Corps during World War II.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for over 50 years.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Queen Esther No. 3 and Daughters of the Nile. She was a member and past president of Washington County Hospital Nursing Association.
She is survived by her second husband, Elmer P. Metz Sr.; one son, William Melvin Ridge of Midwest City, Okla.; one stepson, Elmer P. Metz, Jr. of Sunset Beach, N.C.; one sister, Helen Biesecker of Waynesboro; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 712 W. Church St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert S. Barton and the Rev. Darryl Zoller will officiate. Burial will be in Harbaugh's Cemetery, Rouzerville, Pa.

POINT OF ROCKS, Md. - Lenzie Elizabeth DeGrange, 91, formerly of West Fifth Street, Frederick, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at 3722 Point of Rocks Road, Point of Rocks.
Born March 29, 1907, near Lewistown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Lewis A. and Sarah E. Morningstar Clem.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy C. DeGrange, who died in 1982.
She had been employed by several area dry cleaners.
She was a member of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Jefferson, Md.
She is survived by two daughters, Doris C. Bierley of Frederick, and Harriet A. Pryor of Myersville, Md.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family, surviving 13 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Etchison Memorial Chapel of Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 East Church Street. The Rev. Virginia K. Price will officiate. Burial will be in Saint Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Jefferson.

Cleveland Henson
Cleveland Henson, 82, who resided at 20 1/2 Belview Avenue, Hagerstown, with his niece, Helen E. Scott, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 7, 1916, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Noah Francis and Bertha Ellen Ripple Henson.
He had been employed by Brandt Cabinet Works, Inc.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by one brother, George R. Henson of Hagerstown, two great nieces, one great nephew, two great-great nieces and two great-great nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Viola R. Scott; and three brothers, Frank N. Henson, Clarence M. Henson, and Leroy S. Henson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 East Antietam Street, Hagerstown. Merle H. Petre, Dale L. Horst, and D. Richard Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
