George D. Hall
GLEN BURNIE, Md. - George Dennis Hall, 47, of 7910 Vintage Circle, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999, at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie.
Born Aug. 31, 1951, in Alexandria, Va., he was the son of Barbara A. Deihr Brown of Hagerstown and Archie C. Hall of Alexandria.
He was an engineer with the Maryland State Department of Transportation.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Ashley Marie Hall of Waldorf, Md.; two sons, Brian Joseph Hall and George Dennis Hall, both of Frederick, Md.; a sister, Rhonda Denise Kass of Richmond, Va.; a brother, Mahlon A. Hall of Los Angeles; his grandmother, Anna B. Gardner of Hagerstown; his stepfather, Norman F. Brown of Hagerstown; and his stepmother, Laverne Hall of Alexandria.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Joseph M. Quesenberry will officiate. Burial will be in National Memorial Park, Falls Church, Va.
The family will receive friends Saturday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mary C. Springer
WILLIAMSPORT - Mary Catherine Springer, 88, of Williamsport Retirement Community, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Williamsport Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 16, 1911, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late David Leighton and Ellen Myrtle Hawbaker Winters.
Her husband, Clyde Clayton Springer, died in 1991.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Lou Coss of Boonsboro; two sons, Clyde Richard Springer of Sykesville, Md., and Donald B. Springer of Hummelstown, Pa.; one sister, Julia Miller of Hagerstown; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Springer; two sisters, Sarah Ford and Elizabeth Davis; and three brothers, Karl Winters, Paul Winters, and Jack Winters.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Roland Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

Beatrice T. McCarter
SMITHSBURG - Beatrice Theresa McCarter, 67, of 12005 Holiday Circle, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 25, 1931, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Jennie Lovendusky Borum.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, Stanley M. McCarter; two daughters, Mary Jo Cunningham, at home, and Ann Riker of Smithsburg; two sons, James McCarter of Smithsburg, and Michael M. McCarter of San Diego; two sisters, Josie Kornacki and Anna Mae Coveleski, both of Wilkes-Barre; seven brothers, Dan Borum of Hagerstown, Richard Borum, Walter Borum and Joe Borum, all of Wilkes-Barre, Dave Borum of Mesa, Ariz., Hank Borum of Largo, Fla., and Michael Borum of Middlesex, N.J.; and two grandsons.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. George A. Limmer as celebrant. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m., with rosary recitation at 6:30 p.m.

Helen V. Shreve
FREDERICK, Md. - Helen Virginia Shreve, 84, of 250 E. Seventh St., died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 2, 1914, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Ulysses Grant and Daisy Edward Heffner Keeney.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Hildebrand; and her second husband, William J. Shreve Sr.
She was associated with Frederick Tailoring Co. and Sagners, where she was a press operator for several years.
She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, Frederick.
She is survived by two sons, John T. Hildebrand of Middletown, Md., and William J. Shreve Jr. of Mountaindale, Md.; three daughters, Helen V. Stevens of Frederick, Delores K. Baugher of Hagerstown and C. Catherine Poplin of Westminster, Md.; a sister, C. Catherine Bussard of Frederick; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Bernard A. Shreve and Douglas T. Hildebrand; and two grandsons.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Thomas W. Claggett III will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
H. Steward Mitchell
LAUREL, Md. - H. Steward Mitchell, 81, died of heart failure Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999.
He was born in Laurel.
He trained horses for half a century, beginning in the late 1940s. He had been stabled at Bowie Training Center for at least 30 years, and raced at tracks throughout the country.
He was a veteran of World War II.
He won five Primer Stakes; and trained Doctor Ichabod, who retired in 1995 after 116 starts.
He is survived by a daughter, Joan Clevenger; two sons, Herman S. Mitchell Jr. and Robert O. Mitchell; three sisters, Miriam Jenkins, Dorothy Jenkins and Ruth Polston; two brothers, Franklin P. Mitchell Jr. and John L. Mitchell; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Ave., Laurel. Burial will follow in Ivy Hill cemetery in Laurel.
Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harold E. Peters
WILLIAMSPORT - Harold E. Peters, 94, of 16505 Virginia Ave., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born April 6, 1904, near Appleton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Aubert R. and Hattie Rogers Peters.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois E. Frankman Peters, in 1951.
He was a graduate of Defiance College, Defiance, Ohio.
He was general secretary and later executive director of the Hagerstown YMCA, and previously was with the YMCA in Jamestown, N.Y. He was involved with the U.S.O. and was instrumental in forming the North Street YMCA
He was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church; and had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, was on the Church Council; taught Sunday school and was church treasurer.
He was a charter member of Torch Club; was involved with Hagerstown Kiwanis; on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army; and involved with community activities.
He is survived by his second wife, Virginia Knode Peters; two sons, H. Edward Peters of Hagerstown and David F. Peters of Richmond, Va.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Grant R. Peters.
Services will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mark A. Sandell and the Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service.
