E. Frances Slifer

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - E. Frances Slifer, 88, formerly of 102 E. Green St., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at Citizens Nursing Home in Frederick, Md.

Born Nov. 20, 1910, in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence Franklin and Emma C. Remsburg Rudy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer L. Slifer, in 1987.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown.

She is survived by a daughter, Patti Jenkins of Kearneysville, W.Va.; a son, Rudy L. Slifer of Middletown; a brother, Robert C. Rudy of Boonsboro; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Glenn Rudy, Ralph Rudy, Ernest Rudy and Richard Rudy.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The Rev. Donald L. Turley will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the abiding memorial fund of Zion Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 306, Middletown, MD 21769.

Grace E. Miller

MIDDLETOWN, Md. - Grace Evelyn Miller, 90, of 112 W. Main St., died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Sunrise Retirement Center in Frederick, Md.

Born July 23, 1908, in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur M. and Mamie Elizabeth Younkins Ahalt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Dallas Miller, in 1984.

She retired from Sagner's in Frederick, after 25 years.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown.

She is survived by a daughter, Evelyn F. Biser of Middletown; a son, Donald L. Miller of Middletown; four grandchildren, Jerry L. Poffinberger of Sanford, Fla., Diane L. Marsden of Harmony, Md., Timothy W. Biser of Middletown and Mark Wetzel of Hanover, Pa.; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. The Rev. William M. Bucher will officiate. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown.

Friends may call Saturday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the cemetery fund or the garden fund of Zion Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 306, Middletown, MD 21769.

Hazel C. Solomon

Hazel Corbin Solomon, 83, of 1614 Woodlands Run, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 13, 1915, in Romney, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Albert M. and Nellie Mayhew Corbin.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Grayson D. Solomon, in 1982.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in primary education from Shepherd College.

A teacher at Conococheague Elementary School, she retired from the Washington County Board of Education.

She was a member of Williamsport United Methodist Church.

She was a member of Lioness Club of Hagerstown; Ladies of the Elks 378; and Maryland State Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by a daughter, Lianna S. Mason of Fallston, Md.; three sons, Brian R. Solomon of Blaine, Wash., Mark J. Solomon of Hagerstown and Grayson D. Solomon Jr. of Herndon, Va.; a sister, Myrtle Bieber of Sebring, Fla.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer T. Corbin and Adrian M. Corbin.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740; or American Cancer Society, Washington County Unit, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Carl S. Muessen

Carl S. Muessen, 74, of Howard County and formerly of Keedysville, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at his home.

Born May 8, 1924, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Anna B. Muessen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey T. Muessen, in 1996.

He retired from Bell Atlantic in 1988, and then worked three years for Maryland State Highway Administration.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of both American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was an active member of Keedysville Ruritan Club, serving for several years as chairman of the Scholarship Committee and general chairman for the Annual Festival.

He is survived by two sons, Joseph H. Muessen and Michael W. Muessen of Glen Burnie, Md.; two sisters, Louise M. Rowles of Baltimore and Laura M. Hill of North Webster, Ind.; and a granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph W. Muessen Jr.

Services and burial will be private.

The family will receive friends Monday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Loring Byers Funeral Home in Randallstown, 8728 Liberty Road, two miles west of the Baltimore beltway exit 18.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

David B. Hartman

WILLIAMSPORT - David Bradley Hartman, 35, of 11848 Cedar Ridge Road, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.

Born June 29, 1963, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Lewis and Edith Watkins Hartman of Hagerstown.

He was a 1981 graduate of Williamsport High School.

He was employed with Good Humor-Breyers; and had been employed with I-70 Sunoco for 10 years.

He was a member of Calvary Grace Brethren Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Stacey Starliper of Hagerstown; a brother, Brian Hartman of Hagerstown; a niece; and a friend, Chris Lapole.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Douglas A. Courter will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Jean E. Lantz

FREDERICK, Md. - Jean Elizabeth Kinsey Lantz, 68, of Mobley Court, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 1999, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home.

Born Jan. 12, 1931, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Norman Edward and Helen Elizabeth Orem Kinsey Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edwin Lantz, in 1987.

She was a member of Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah's Witness in Frederick. Prior to retirement she was employed at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, as a certified nurses aid.

She is survived by three daughters, Deborah Taulton of Jefferson, Md., Brenda Kaste of Walkersville, Md., and Gail L. Young of Brunswick, Md.; a son, David Mark Lantz of Florida; a brother, Norman Edward Kinsey Jr. of Frederick; special friends, Nancy Bengyston and Mary Burtner; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County, P.O. Box, Frederick, MD 21701.
