George E. Allen
George Edward Allen, 76, of 2010 Starlight Lane, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at his home.
Born Jan. 18, 1923, in Berea, Ky., he was the son of the late Blevins P. and Nora Elizabeth Obenchain Allen.
He was a 1948 graduate of Berea College.
At his retirement in 1985 he was a resource development agent in Western Maryland for University of Maryland. He directed the creation and operation of Regional Education Service Agency for Appalachian Maryland. During his career he worked as an intelligence specialist with the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington, D.C., consultant to Army Chief of Staff at the Pentagon, served as chief of research and special studies with the planning commission serving Montgomery and Prince George's counties and was director of research for a planning and engineering firm in Memphis, Tenn.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, flying 30 combat missions with the 398th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force during World War II.
He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown. Previously he was active in creating and participating in the Interfaith Consortium in Cumberland, Md.
Following retirement he was corporate president and chairman of the board of Upper Potomac Technology Consortium which he helped develop and create while chairing the Roundtable for the Upper Potomac (West Virginia and Maryland).
He is survived by his wife Mary A. Allen; two daughters, Jane E. Gleason of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Gail Louise Rastelli of Ashburn, Va.; one son, James E. Allen of Woodbridge, Va.; two brothers, John W. Allen of Berea and B.P. Allen of Middletown, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Menze and Ruth Pennycuff.
There will be a Celebration of Life service Saturday, Jan. 30, at 11:30 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. John Ailstock will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Columbarium in Arlington National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 30, at 11 a.m. before the service, at the funeral home.

Letty S. Rockwell
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Letty Margaret Schafer Rockwell, 78, of College Park, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Magnolia Nursing Center in Lanham, Md.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Arthur Rockwell, in 1994.
She was a member of Berwyn Baptist Church of College Park.
She was a member of Christian Women's Club in Prince George's County.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Austin of Hagerstown and Rosemary Walters of Lanham; and four grandchildren, John Winebrenner and Katie Winebrenner, both of Hagerstown, Jeffrey Walters and Philip Walters, both of Lanham.
Following burial at Perkins Chapel Cemetery, a memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Berwyn Baptist Church, 4720 Cherokee St., College Park.

Merrill O. Vanderveer
MILFORD, Ind. - Merrill O. Vanderveer, 87, of 13233 N. 400 W., died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Goshen General Hospital, in Goshen, Ind.
Born March 8, 1911, in Milford, he was the son of the late John S. and Ella Overholt Vanderveer.
He was a graduate of Milford High School and attended Goshen and Manchester colleges.
He was a farmer and lifetime resident of Milford.
He was a member of Turkey Creek Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Markley; one daughter, Marcia Neuhouser of Grabill, Ind.; two sons, Loyal Vanderveer of Williamsport and Lowell Vanderveer of Goshen, Ind.; one sister, Verda Whitehead of New Paris, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Vanderveer Jr. and Howard Vanderveer.
Services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Turkey Creek Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Roger Eberly will officiate. Burial will be in Milford Cemetery.
Visitation will be today, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, 950 N. Main St., Nappanee, Ind.

Charles O. Smith
WILLIAMSPORT - Charles Olen Smith, 74, of 18 S. Conococheague St. and formerly of Security, Md., died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 18, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late David Carl and Mary Elizabeth Lyday Smith.
He was a former employee of M. P. Moller Organ, retiring in 1991 after 49 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by a son, Alan Michael Smith of Williamsport; two brothers, Jay W. Smith of Hagerstown and Philip N. Smith of Albion, Ind.; a granddaughter, Ashley Marie Smith, with whom he lived; nieces; nephews; and his former wife, Elizabeth Frances Smith of Hagerstown.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Jayne Applegate; and two brothers, David Lewis Smith and William Gordon Smith.
Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Bill J. McPherson will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Monday one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
Paul D. Myers
MURRELLS INLET, N.C. - Paul Donald Myers, 66, of Salters Cove, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Born March 3, 1932, in Hancock, he was the son of the late Paul and Marie Divelbliss Myers.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Army Security Agency.
He had retired from Farmers and Merchants Bank. He had worked for Keystone RV Center in Greencastle, Pa.; and currently was employed with Jurassic Golf, Myrtle Beach.
He was a member of Surfside United Methodist Church.
He was a member of American Legion Post 26, Hancock; and Surfside Moose Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Gail I. Norris Myers; two sons, Keith Myers of Hagerstown and Keven Myers of Bluffton, S.C.; four brothers, Robert "Ike" Myers and Gene Myers, both of Hancock, Ronnie Myers of Hagerstown and Joseph Myers of Baltimore; a sister, Betty Suder of Clear Spring; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, Hancock.

Michael J. Crabill
Michael Joseph "Mike" Crabill, 10, of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born Oct. 25, 1988, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Ramon L. and Theresa L. Rice Crabill.
He attended Pangborn Elementary School.
He was a member of Scouts Pack 34 of Hagerstown, Longmeadow Bowling Youth League, and played baseball at National Little League, Hagerstown.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Matthew James Crabill, Mark Joshua Crabill, and Mitchell Jacob Crabill, all of Hagerstown; maternal grandparents, Adam and Dixie Rice of Frederick, Md.; paternal grandparents, William Sr. and Carol Crabill of Frederick; and aunts and uncles.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Saint John's Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick. The Rev. Keith W. Bosivert will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick.
