Helen M. Bates
Helen Monticello Bates, 86, of Julia Manor Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of Avalon Manor Nursing Home, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Julia Manor Home.
Born Dec. 18, 1912, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of the late John B. and Evey Creasey Bates.
She is survived by two brothers, William F. Bates of Williamsport and Early W. Bates of Hagerstown; two nieces and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Grover and John W. Bates.
Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.
Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.
Ruth A. Eby
Ruth A. Eby, 63, of 16413 Fairview Road, Hagerstown, and formerly of Chambersburg, Pa., died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at her home.
Born March 16, 1935, in Letterkenny Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Victor B. and Bessie Elizabeth Wenger Rife.
She was a secretary at Eby's Lawn and Garden in Hagerstown. She also was a homemaker.
She was a member of Mount Olive Mennonite Church, Maugansville.
She is survived by her husband, Harold E. Eby, whom she married
Dec. 12, 1957; three daughters, Ruth Ellen Herr of Gettysburg, Pa., Carolyn M. Grove of Hanover, Pa., and Linda K. Diller of Waynesboro, Pa.; a son, Harold D. Eby of Hagerstown; a sister, Mary Jane Funk of Chambersburg; a brother, Merle W. Rife of Chambersburg; 19 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters: her twin, Janet L. Ocker, in 1989, and Katherine Rife in 1929.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Mount Olive Mennonite Church, Maugansville. Pastor Glenn E. Martin, Pastor Ira Martin, Pastor Arlin Eby and Deacon Mark Strite will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olive Mennonite Church Cemetery, Maugansville.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Miller-Grove Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa.; and Monday one hour prior to services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mount Olive Mennonite Church, in care of Pastor Glenn E. Martin, 13520 Marsh Pike, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
Mildred M. Trumpower
WALDORF, Md. - Mildred Marie Trumpower, 76, of 1306 Greengate Court, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Civista Hospital in Waldorf.
Born Jan. 13, 1922, in Big Pool, she was the daughter of the late James Arthur and Laura Marie Ferris Hamner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Trumpower, in 1992.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Paul's Church of Clear Spring.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Marie Adams of Waldorf and Deloris Ann Johnson of Coats, N.C.; two brothers, Roy Hamner and James Arthur Hamner, both of Waynesboro, Pa.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.
Services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Mary Amundson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Connie S. Porter
COLUMBIA, Md. - Connie Sue Porter, 8, of 6506 Beechwood Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 27, 1990, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Judy Grace Porter Spencer of Hagerstown.
She was a Protestant.
She is survived by a sister, Candy Sue Spencer, at home; two stepsisters, Carma Spencer and Crystal Burnett of Hagerstown; a brother, Chad A. Spencer at home; a stepbrother, Charles A. Spencer III of Hagerstown; paternal grandmother, Dolly Spencer of Paw Paw, W.Va.; and aunts and uncles.
Graveside services will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at Camp Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw. Maj. Harvey Adams will officiate.
The family will receive friends today from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown.
Vincent W. Helmintoller Sr.
Vincent W. Helmintoller Sr., 90, of 170 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 3, 1908, in Greenville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Elias Galloway and Ollie Elizabeth Myers Helmintoller.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Virginia Anderson Helmintoller, in 1991.
He was employed by Baker-Wibberly of Hagerstown, retiring in 1978. He previously was employed by Fairchild Aircraft.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart.
He was a member of Potomac Post 202 American Legion, Williamsport; DAV, Hagerstown; and umpired Williamsport Little League.
He is survived by a daughter, Rhoda Helmintoller of Hagerstown; a son, Vincent W. Helmintoller Jr. of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Vashti Nottingham and Glenna Meader, both of Waynesboro, Va.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Albert L. Leaf Memorial Chapel of Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Nelson L. Martin will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport, with military graveside services by Morris Frock Post 42, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open after 9 a.m.

Essie H. Gouker
MYERSVILLE, Md. - Essie "Louise" Hensler Gouker, 71, of 2716 Canada Hill Road, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999, in Frederick, Md.
Born Dec. 26, 1927, in Frederick, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Mabel L. Ford Hensler.
She had been an operator supervisor at C&P Telephone Co., Frederick.
She is survived by her husband, Leo F. Gouker; a stepson, Michael Gouker of Hagerstown; two step grandchildren, Benjamin Gouker and Joshua Gouker, both of Hagerstown; and a sister.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Private services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
