Mary Ann Schappell
Longtime Charlesmont resident Mary Ann Schappell (nee Adams), 60, died May 18 [2003] at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Mrs. Schappel worked as an information operator for C&P Telephone Co. for about 10 years before she became a full-time homemaker.
For the past four years, she worked as a teacher's aide at Charlesmont Elementary School.
Devoted to her family, she especially cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Schappell, sons Terence and Norman Schappell, stepsons Larry, Jerry and Terry Allen Schappell, brother Joe Adams and eight grandchildren. She also leaves behind two stepdaughters.
The Rev. William Wallace of First Lutheran Church of Gray Manor conducted graveside services May 21 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 43025, Baltimore, MD 21236-0025.

John W. Smith Jr.
John Wesley Smith Jr. died May 18 [2003] at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He was 77 and lived on Willow Spring Road.
Born and raised in Morgantown, W.Va., Mr. Smith moved to Dundalk 60 years ago.
He worked as an inspector for Bethlehem Steel for 46 years before retiring about 14 years ago.
Mr. Smith, who devoted his life to taking care of his children and grandsons, enjoyed taking annual vacations in Wildwood, N.J. He also was fond of grocery shopping with his daughter.
Predeceased by three brothers and three sisters, he is survived by son John G. Smith and daughter Frances Parks, both of Dundalk, two grandsons, Edward G. and Oscar V. Parks Jr., and six great-grandchildren. He also will be missed by his pet dogs, Baby and Coco, and pet cat, Junior.
The Rev. Michael Baker of Woolford Memorial Baptist Church conducted service May 22 at Connelly Funeral Home.
Contributions may be made in his memory to the Community Assistance Network, 7701 Dunmanway, Dundalk, MD 21222.

Karen A. Brooks
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 28 [2003], for Penwood Terrace resident Karen Ann Brooks, 49, who died unexpectedly June 20 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
The service begins 10 a.m. at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, 7922 Wise Ave. Interment will follow at Meadowridge Memorial Park.
A Penwood Terrace resident most of her life, Miss Brooks attended Sparrows Point High School and worked at Crown Port Auto at Dundalk Marine Terminal, until she became ill about three years ago.
An avid bingo player, she loved gardening, taking day trips to Delaware Park and shopping at flea markets and yard sales with her only grandchild, Bradley Hartman.
She was a member of Penwood Christian Church.
In addition to her grandson, she is survived by daughter Fawn M. Brooks of Dundalk, father Harold W. Brooks Sr. and brother Harold W. Brooks Jr. of Penwood Terrace. She also will be missed by dear friend Charles Gallagher of Fort Howard. Her mother, Lois L. Brooks, predeceased her.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Scleroderma Foundation, 12 Kent Way, Suite 101, Byfield, MA 01922.

William V. Crawford Jr.
Retired barber William Vernon Crawford Jr. died after a brief illness June 18 [2003] at Baltimore VA Medical Center. He was 73 and lived on Broening Highway since 1951.
Mr. Crawford, who worked for American Standard for many years until the plant closed down, opened Bill's Barber Shop in Hampden in the early 1970s. He retired about two years ago.
Born in West Virginia, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
In addition to his wife of 53 years, Opal (nee Vance), he is survived by sons Robert Crawford of Jarrettsville and Joseph Crawford of Dundalk, daughters Doris Stevens of Overlea and Deborah Reitz of Ellicott City, brothers Russell and Edward Crawford, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brother Thomas Crawford and sister Eva Palmer.
Services were held June 21 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment followed at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.

Carol Dell Davis
Lifelong Dundalk resident Carol Dell Davis, 67, died at home June 16 [2003] after a long illness.
The former Carol Ruble was born Oct. 10, 1935, and grew up on 46th Street. She graduated from Dundalk High School and later studied nursing at Essex Community College.
She became Mrs. Frederick William Davis Jr. on Nov. 20, 1953, and lived on North Boundary Road for many years. Her husband died in 1986.
In 1999, she moved to Pinewood Drive to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Talbert Shepke, and her grandson, Michael Davis-Shepke, who survive her. She also is survived by two sons, Fred and Keith Davis, both of Towson.
Her daughter said, "My mother devoted her life to her children and was a great role model. She was very generous and taught us to be respectful and to always help others."
A longtime member of North Point Baptist Church, Mrs. Davis was active years ago with the church's programs for teen-agers and children.
Her hobbies were reading and gardening.
Other survivors are sisters Patricia White, Dorothy Grybos, Molly Orlando and Jane Burgess, brother Sonny Ruble, a granddaughter, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial is planned.

Linda D. Geiger
Linda Dunphy Geiger, 48, died after a long illness June 17 at her home in Old Dundalk.
The former Linda Dunphy grew up on Larkhall Road and graduated from Patapsco High School in 1973. She went on to graduate from the Dundalk Campus of The Community College of Baltimore County in 1999.
She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 451.
An avid craftswoman, she was especially fond of crocheting.
Her survivors include her mother, former longtime West Inverness resident Marie Bystry of Perry Hall, brothers Joseph Dunphy and Randy Malloy, both of Dundalk, and many other family members.
Services were held June 19 at Connelly Funeral Home.

Emily K. Harris
Emily Katherine Harris, one-month old daughter of Jennifer and Wayne Harris of Leslie Road, died May 23 [2003] after a brief illness at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by sister Samantha Harris, grandparents Mary and Eric Davidson of Danville, Va., and Leroy and Ardeen Harris of Dundalk, uncles and aunts Matt and Jen Goldsmith and Chris and Elizabeth Harris, aunt Lori Borchardt, uncle John Kapraun, godfather Russell Ashwell and many other family members.
Services were held May 27 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. Interment followed at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery.

Wanda L. Hopkins
Eastwood homemaker Wanda Lee Hopkins died of cancer June 14 [2003] at age 48.
The former Wanda Lee Brown grew up in West Inverness and graduated from Patapsco High School in 1973.
Her favorite pastimes were gardening, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to her husband, Michael K. Hopkins, play with the band Up the Ante.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by sons Howard "Bucky" Lang and Michael Lang, brother Lawrence Brown Jr., sister Loretta Blumm, two grandchildren, six nieces and many other family members.
Services on June 18 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home were followed by interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Anna L. Kendall
Services will be held Thursday, June 26 [2003], for lifelong Dundalk resident Anna L. Kendall, 87, who died after a brief illness June 24 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
The service begins 10 a.m. at Connelly Funeral Home, 7110 Sollers Point Road. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
The former Anna Dondorf, who was born Nov. 13, 1915, grew up in St. Helena and was a member of the St. Helena Old Timers Club.
She was 19 years old when she married North Carolina native William N. Kendall. They raised their two children in Todd's Farm, then moved to Old Dundalk in 1953. She and her husband were married 68 years when he died in 2001.
Mrs. Kendall retired from Kresge's in the Dundalk Village Shopping Center with 20 years of service.
A league bowler at Pinland for many years, she also loved watching movies and reading. Taking day trips with her sisters was always a favorite pastime.
She belonged to Graceland United Methodist Church since childhood.
Mrs. Kendall is survived by daughter Patricia Walczak of Rosedale, sister Catherine Ricker of Baltimore, brother John Dondorf of Florida, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She also was predeceased by son William N. Kendall Jr., brother Phillip Dondorf and sisters Clara McNew, Helen Smith, Ruth Flett and Myrtle Renner.
Visitation at the funeral home was scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, from 3 to 7 p.m.

Steven J. Lindt
A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 26 [203], for Sandy Plains Road resident Steven J. Lindt, 51, who died at home unexpectedly June 23.
The service begins 8 p.m. at Connelly Funeral Home, 7110 Sollers Point Road. Visitation is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A cab driver for 23 years, Mr. Lindt worked for Atwater Cab Co. since 1998. He had earlier worked for North Point Cab Co.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Charles Evering VFW Post 6506 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 451.
An avid fisherman, Mr. Lindt especially enjoyed fishing trips with his only grandson, Johnny Tormollan Jr., and had recently received a citation for a 42-inch rockfish he caught in the Chesapeake Bay. Coin and gun collecting also were among his many interests.
Mr. Lindt grew up in East Baltimore attended Mergenthaler and Northern high schools.
In addition to his grandson, he is survived by daughter Laura M. Lindt of Hamilton and brothers Howard F. Lindt III of Eastpoint and Paul N. Lindt of Edgemere.

Shannan M. Logston
Services will be held Thursday, June 26 [2003], for 16-year-old Shannan Marie Logston of Merritt Boulevard, who died in an automobile accident June 21 in White Marsh.
The service begins at noon at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home, 7922 Wise Ave. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Miss Logston had just finished her sophomore year at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts, where she was an honor roll student, as she had been throughout her years at General John Stricker Middle School. She started a five-year study of the clarinet as a Berkshire Elementary School fifth-grader.
A former softball player for Gray Charles Rec Council, she loved the outdoors and was especially fond of camping and spending time at the beach.
She worked part-time for Burger King on Belair Road for the past two years.
In addition to her parents, Barbara E. Walters and Robert J. Logston, she is survived by stepparents Thomas Walters and Betty Jane Logston, sisters Nicole and Amber Logston, brother Jeriami Logston, grandmothers Joan Ruddlesden and Vencenza Logston, all of Dundalk, great-grandmother Doris Chison of Baltimore and many other family members. She also will be missed by dear friend Jeff Pollard.
Visitation at the funeral home was scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Ralph L. Schrengost
Retired steelworker Ralph L. Schrengost died at home June 17 [2003]. He was 65 and lived on Dundalk Avenue for many years with his niece, Katy Bell, who died last year, and her husband, Pete Bell.
Mr. Schrengost retired from Bethlehem Steel in February. He had earlier worked 16 years for Harris and Sons Steel Co. He belonged to the United Steelworkers of America and had been a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
Born in Johnstown, Pa., Mr. Schrengost was the last surviving of 17 children. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves.
His survivors include nieces Shirley Munoz, Mary Rager, Faye Romesburg, Pat McCoy, Ellen Gerber, Marie Goodall, Bert Cassick, Virginia Doland and Linda Baker of Saltsburg, Pa., and nephews Louis, Joseph and Bernard Reighard, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Interment will be held at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery.

Lewis O. Strait
Longtime Stanbrook resident Lewis Oscar Strait, 77, died June 9 [2003] at Harford County Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace.
Mr. Strait was born in Akron, Ohio, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He moved to Dundalk in 1955.
He worked at Bethlehem Steel for 37 years, retiring as a recorder in the rod and wire mill. He then worked as a school bus driver for Baltimore County Public Schools, retiring a second time several years ago.
A member of Patapsco Masonic Lodge 183, he also belonged to Edgemere Moose Lodge 537 and Dundalk American Legion Post 38.
He is survived by sons Michael and John Strait, daughters Jeannie Janyska and Gail Strait, sisters Irene Morgan, Leona Ratliffe and Margaret Friend, brother Gerald Strait, four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He also leaves behind former wife and dear friend Jean B. Strait.
He was predeceased by son Richard Strait and grandson Charles Milliner. Services were held June 13 at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home. A service with military honors followed at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery.

Julio F. Vazquez
Former longtime Gray Manor resident Julio F. Vazquez, 85, died June 2 [2003] at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Mr. Vazquez, a retired Bethlehem Steel welder, and his wife, Christine (nee Padilla), moved to Holiday, Fla., in 1983.
A former longtime member of Sacred Heart of Mary Church, he also had belonged to Dundalk Moose Lodge 1228.
Born in Puerto Rico, Mr. Vazquez came to the United States in 1944.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, he is survived by three children, Julio Vazquez Jr. of Middle River, Maria Christina Yeager of Atlanta and Juan Vazquez of Hamilton, brother Hilberto Vazquez of Puerto Rico, sister Esther Vazquez of Orlanda, Fla., five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 5 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Holiday.
