RODNEY A. FRAZIER

CUMBERLAND - Rodney Arnold Frazier, 35, of 437 Pine Ave., Cumberland, died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Memorial Hospital as a result of an accident, where he was electrocuted and fell from a ladder while cleaning Kline's Furniture Store, for painting.

Born Dec. 7, 1962, in Baltimore, he was the son of Robert L. Frazier, with whom he resided, and the late Mary D. (Chainey) Frazier.

Mr. Frazier worked with Kenny Custom Painting. He received an Associate of Arts degree from Hagerstown Community College, and received the Earl Bracey Scholarship from Allegany College of Maryland, where he last attended. He also served in the Maryland National Guard Reserves and was a member of the Fort Recovery.

Surviving besides his father are one brother, Robert A. Frazier, Baltimore; two sisters, Cynthia Green, Baltimore, and Rita J. Holman, Mount Vernon, Ind.; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Toni Washington, Cumberland.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Gary Curtis officiating.

DONALD H. FRATZ

ACCIDENT - Donald Henry Fratz, 67, of 824 Accident-Bittinger Road, Accident, and also Deep Creek Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born May 3, 1930, in Accident, he was a son of the late Walter H. and Anna V. (Bittinger) Fratz.

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Wright; and two brothers, Robert and Wayne Fratz.

Mr. Fratz was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Accident, and was president of W.H. Fratz Inc. He was a member of the Garrett County Democrat Club and was currently serving his fourth term as chairman of the Democrat State Central Committee. He was a past president and currently secretary-treasurer of the Friendsville Rotary Club, served on the Garrett County Salary and Wage Committee, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Anna Mary (Savage) Fratz, five sons, D. Douglas Fratz, Gaithersburg, Jeffrey Fratz, Hagerstown, Michael Fratz and Shawn Fratz, both of McHenry, and Steven Fratz, Accident; two daughters, Julie Fratz-Orr, Oakland, and Lisa Bonar, Accident; two brothers, Allen Fratz and Gary Fratz, both of Accident; three sisters, June Wilt, Cumberland, Wilma Edwards, McHenry, and Martha Leese, Frostburg; 13 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, Accident, on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wilfred Karsten officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Charles Wilt Jr., Delbert Leese Jr., Greg Fratz, Dwayne Fratz, Seth Fratz, and Dennis Savage. Honorary pallbearers will be Brent Fratz, Greg Oester, Darrell Savage, and Rick Bond.

Military graveside honors will be accorded by Grantsville Post No. 214, American Legion.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to either Zion Lutheran Church or Northern Garrett County Rescue Squad.

WANDA M. FLINN FRIDDLE

PETERSBURG, W.Va.- Wanda M. (Flinn) Friddle, 72, of Petersburg, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at Grant Memorial Hospital.

Born Aug. 15, 1925, in Belleville, Wood County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late James Olin Flinn, Sr., and Anna Marie (Toomey) Flinn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. "Pete" Friddle, Jr., on June 3, 1994; three brothers, William Flinn, James Olin Flinn, Jr., and Bobby Gene Flinn; one sister, Beulah Schriver.

Wanda was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church and member of the Order of Eastern Star, Moorefield Chapter 102.

Surviving are two sons, Charles H. Friddle III and wife, Penny, Elkins, W.Va., and S. Todd Friddle, Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Mrs. James (Phyllis) Cole, Petersburg; six grandchildren, Holly and Jennifer Cole, Charles H. "Chip" Friddle IV, Katherine, Molly and Austin Friddle; one sister, Ruth Arbogast, Petersburg; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the Main Street United Methodist Church, Petersburg, on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Meredith Ball and the Rev. Don Scofield officiating.

Private interment will be in Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield, W.Va.

Family will receive friends following the memorial service at Main Street United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grant Memorial Hospital Building Fund; Mountaineer Athletic Club, Strength and Conditioning Department, P.O. Box 0877, Morgantown, WV 26507; Boy Scouts Troop 88, sponsored by First United Methodist Church, Kerens Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Schaeffer Funeral Home, Petersburg.

CARL RICHARD "DICK" FRIDLEY

RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Carl Richard "Dick" Fridley, 67, of Ridgeley, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at the Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit.

Born Jan. 24, 1930, in Ridgeley, he was the son of the late Conrad "Jake" and Nellie G. (Justice) Fridley. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Clark Fridley.

He was a 1948 graduate of Ridgeley High School.

Mr. Fridley was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, having served in Okinawa. He retired from the Maryland National Guard, where he was a Sergeant First Class.

Mr. Fridley was retired from the Boilermakers Local #154, Pittsburgh, Pa. He also was a retired member of the Ironworkers Local #568, Cumberland.

He was a life member of the Gold Star Post #6452, V.F.W., Ridgeley.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Diane (Wilson) Fridley. He was a devoted father to three sons, David Fridley, Ridgeley, Gary Fridley and wife, Rhonda, Fort Ashby, W.Va., and Stephen Fridley and wife, Bonnie, Ridgeley; loving grandfather to Shane, Matthew, Brook, Stephanie, Scott, Daniel, and Holly Fridley; one brother, Conrad Dale Fridley, Manassas, Va.; one sister, Lois Jean Ringler, Ridgeley; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Vernon Beachum officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Disease Foundation, William Black Medical Research Building, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, 710 West 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982.

DR. ALVIN P. FRIEND

OAKLAND - Alvin P. Friend, DDS, 69, of Oakland, died Monday, March 3, 1997, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.

Born June 20, 1927, in Swanton, he was a son of the late Lenuel F. Friend, and Delores (Sharpless) Friend.

Dr. Friend was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from Potomac State College in 1948, and the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, University of Maryland, in 1952. He did an internship at the Oral Surgery Department of Spring Grove Hospital, and did residencies in oral surgery and anesthesiology at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Ky. Throughout his career, Dr. Friend presented many programs and clinics to numerous dental societies and associations. He also presented educational programs to civic organizations, as well as high school and college groups. He served as president of the medical staff of Garrett County Memorial Hospital, and as president of the Allegany-Garrett County Dental Society. He was past chairman of hospital dental services for the Maryland Dental State association, and past chairman of the hospital dental service committee of the Allegany-Garrett County Dental Society. He once won the honor of being Garrett County's Most Beautiful Person.

He was a member of the Maryland State Dental Association; the Allegany-Garrett County Dental Society; the American Dental Association; the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology; the Christian-Medical Society; Missionary Dentists, Inc.; and the International College of Dentistry. He was a member of the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, taught Sunday school, and sang in the church choir. He was a member of the Christian Businessmen's Group. He did short-term missionary service to Haiti, completing twelve missions starting in 1978. He was a lay church leader, and a counselor and speaker at youth conferences. He conducted Christian seminars and Bible study groups, and was a past president of the Union Rescue Mission in Cumberland.

Surviving are his wife, Ann (Phillippi) Friend; two sons, Jay Friend and fiance Sol Burnett, Sarasota, Fla., and Michael Phillippi and wife Dawn, McHenry; two daughters, Karen Wall and husband Ken, Sarasota, Fla., and Brenda Harvey and husband Dennis, Oakland; one brother, Ronald Friend and wife Beth, Oakland; one sister, Luella Baker and husband James, Swanton; eight grandchildren, Shawn, Shannon, Laura Ann, Adam, Courtney, Kimberly, Cayse, and Kristi; and one great-grandchild, Avery Nicole.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Owen Preston and the Rev. Jack Beck officiating.

Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call at the church one half hour before services.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Pine Grove Church of the Brethren, or Hospice of Garrett County.

CLARENCE W. FRIEND

FRIENDSVILLE - Clarence Wilbur Friend, 75, formerly of Friendsville, died Monday, June 2, 1997, at Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, where he had been a resident for eight years.

Born March 30, 1922, in Accident, he was a son of the late Martin Luther and Clara Margaret (Brown) Friend.

Mr. Friend was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed in construction and timber.

Surviving are his brother, Dale Friend, Sebring, Fla.; a nephew, Steve Friend, Frostburg; a niece, Linda Nugent, Sebring; and a great-nephew, Mark Nugent.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating.

Interment will be in Steele Cemetery.

SADIE MADGE FRIEND

FRIENDSVILLE - Sadie Madge Friend, 100, of 31575 Garrett Highway, Accident, formerly of Friendsville, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.

Born Sept. 22, 1896, in Mount Lick, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late James P. and Ida Florence (Wilfong) Townsend. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Ernest Friend, March 26, 1971; a son, Woodrow; and two daughters, Betty and Helen. She was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children.

Mrs. Friend was a member of the First Christian Church, and she was a homemaker.

Surviving are two daughters, L. Grace Glass, Accident, and Ethel M. Hanft, Youngstown, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating.

Interment will be in the Steele Cemetery, Friendsville.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Northern Garrett County Rescue Squad or the Heart Fund.

JAMES H. FRIES

OAKLAND - James H. "Red" Fries, 87, of Oakland, died on Friday, June 27, 1997, at Oakland.

Born October 23, 1909, in Garrett County, he was a son of the late James Franklin Fries and Laura (DeWitt) Fries. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Twila A. Fries, in 1981.

Mr. Fries was retired from the Howard County Board of Education. He was a local musician known by many.

Surviving are two daughters, Rosellen Brown, Savage, and Rose Sanders, Oakland; one son, James W. Fries, Oakland; one sister, Arletha Moreland, Oakland; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may be call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Fletcher officiating.

Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

ELIZABETH A. FRYER

RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Elizabeth Antoinette "Bessie" Fryer, 79, of Ridgeley, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.

Born Feb. 20, 1918, in Ridgeley, she was the daughter of the late John and Anna (Kroll) Malamphy. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Fryer Sr., in 1993; one son, Joseph Fryer; one sister, Anna Malamphy; and five brothers, Frank, Edward, William, Joseph, and James Malamphy.

Mrs. Fryer was a 1936 graduate of the Ursuline Academy. She had worked at Rosenbaum's, Cumberland Cloak, and Jeannine's. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ladies Auxiliary Knights of Columbus Council No. 586, and the Cumberland Historical Cemetery Organization.

Surviving are three sons, Charles H. Fryer Jr. and wife Nellie, Furnace Acres, Ridgeley, Capt. Patrick L. Fryer, CHC, USN, Washington, D.C., and Stephen Fuller Fryer and wife Catherine, Valley View Addition, Ridgeley; three daughters, Mary Elizabeth Andrews and husband Harry, Keyser, Sheila Ann Mickey and husband Donald, Furnace Acres, Ridgeley, and Camilla Rae Whiteman and husband Roy "Buck;" 18 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Cumberland.

The rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Monday at 2:15 p.m. led by Mary Ann Eckhart, assisted by members of the Cumberland Historical Cemetery Organization.

Memorial contributions may be made to either St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 121 Main St., Ridgeley, WV 26753, or to the Ridgeley Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 619, Ridgeley, WV 26753.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Patrick Nield, Timothy Nield, Dennis Mickey, Donald Mickey Jr., Christopher Whiteman, and Nicholas Fryer.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Donald Nield, Michael Nield, Teresa Lepley, Greg Fryer, Shane Mickey, Trina Fisher, Holly Mickey, Roy "Bucky" Whiteman Jr., Kevin Whiteman, Cheryl Peer, Stephen "Casey" Fryer, and Kati Fryer.

EVELYN BECKMAN FULK

CUMBERLAND - Evelyn Beckman Fulk, 80, formerly of Cumberland, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 1997, at the Loudoun Hospital Center, Sterling, Va.

Born Sept. 21, 1917, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Conrad and Elizabeth (Rank) Beckman.

Mrs. Fulk also was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Dale Fulk, on July 30, 1995.

She was a long-time resident of Wayne, Pa.

She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Wayne, Pa.

Survivors include one son, Harold Wayne Fulk; one daughter, Lizabeth Ann Bomberger; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Wayne Fulk, Gregory John Fulk, Kristen Ann Bomberger, and Steven Richard Bomberger.

Friends will be received at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 1601 Frederick Street, Cumberland, on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich officiating.

Interment will be in St. Luke's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 203 North Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333.

The George-Upchurch Funeral Home, Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
