JOHN D. BREHANY

RIDGELEY, W.Va. - John Darnley Brehany, 89, of Ridgeley, W.Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at his residence.

Born July 3, 1908, in Pekin, Md., he was the son of the late James P. Brehany and Jeannette (Darnley) Brehany.

He also was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Brehany; one son, William L. "Bill" Brehany; and one sister, Anona Brehany.

Mr. Brehany served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. He was a graduate of Catherman's Business School. Mr. Brehany had worked as an accountant, and had been employed by Grant Lumber Supply from 1929 to 1937, Cessna Lumber from 1937 to 1951, South Cumberland Planing Mill from 1951 to 1964, and the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company from 1964 until his retirement in 1973.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ridgeley, Fort Cumberland Post No. 13 American Legion, Aerie No. 245 FOE, and Council No. 586 Knights of Columbus.

Surviving are one sister, Kathleen Sullivan, Vero Beach, Fla., three grandchildren, Scott Brehany, Pensacola, Fla., Kelly Meharg and John Franklin, both of Montgomery, Ala.; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Kent Durig as celebrant.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

A Christian wake service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 8:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Medical Eye Bank of Maryland, 815 Park Ave., Baltimore, MD 21201-9990.

BAKER D. BRELSFORD

SHORT GAP, W.Va. - Baker Davis Brelsford, 79, of Short Gap, died Tuesday, April 1, 1997, at the Hospice Unit at Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 20, 1917, in Levels, he was the son of the late John B. and Hattie (Saville) Brelsford.

Mr. Brelsford was a retired laborer with Local 616, having worked with the Walter N. Yoder and Sons Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Short Gap; a 50 year charter member of Short Gap Fire Department; a 30 year charter member of the Short Gap Lions Club. He was a member of Short Gap Senior Citizens, and Woodmen of the World Lodge 6, Cumberland.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Frances (Haines) Brelsford; one son, Rodney Brelsford and wife Diane, Short Gap; two daughters, Donna J. Pyles and husband Glen, and Vicki Dawson and husband Jim, all of Short Gap; one brother, John Brelsford Jr. and wife Louise, Short Gap; one sister, Nellie Carder and husband Alvin, Short Gap; six grandchildren, Tami Dennis and husband Michael, Todd Pyles and wife Doniele, Mark Dawson, Chad Dawson, Troy Brelsford and Holly Brelsford; and four great-grandchildren, Justin Dennis, Cameron Dennis, Brennan Pyles and Ellison Pyles.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Route 28, Fort Ashby, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Short Gap, on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Sumner Sawyer and the Rev. John Glessner officiating. Interment will be in the Fort Ashby Cemetery.

The Short Gap Fire Department will hold a memorial service on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., followed by the Woodmen of the World memorial service at 7:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Short Gap Fire Department.

Serving as pallbearers are Douglas Brelsford, Terry Brelsford, Marshall Carder, Robert Everett, David Haines and Tom Pyles. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Short Gap Fire Department and the Short Gap Lions Club.

MARIE S. BREWER

LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. - Marie S. Brewer, 77, of 102 Lake Shore Drive, Lake Waccamaw, formerly of Lonaconing, Md., died Sunday, August 3, 1997, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Born in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Kelly) Stewart.

She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Anne Formy-Duval; and a son, Larry Brewer.

Mrs. Brewer was a retired school teacher's assistant. She was a 1938 graduate of Central High School, Lonaconing, and was salutatorian of her class. She was editor in chief of the school newspaper.

Surviving are her husband, Walter L. Brewer; one sister, Colleen S. Garrett, North Charleston; four grandchldren, Wally Brewer, Kelley Lambert, Beth Formy- Duval and Anna Formy-Duval; and one aunt, Nettie Kelly, Lonaconing.

Services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 1997, in North Carolina.

The family requests memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1310 South 16th St., Wilmington, NC 28401 or to the American Heart Association, 4701 Wrightsville Ave., Wilmington, NC 28403.

JAMES E. BRIDGES

CUMBERLAND - James E. Bridges, 68, of 11821 Messick Road, Cumberland, died Thursday, Oct. 30, 1997, at his home.

Born Nov. 25, 1929, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Howard E. Adams and the late Amanda (Bridges) McCarty.

Mr. Bridges was the retired owner and operator of the 220 North Lounge and Jolly Jim's Tavern. He was a member of American Legion Fort Cumberland Post #13. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Surviving are a daughter, Anna Hoyman and husband, James, Cumberland; two special people, Carol Davies and Kitty VanHouten; two brothers, Royce Adams, Rockville, and Leon Adams, Newville, Pa.; four sisters, Phoebe Day, Osterburg, Pa., Ruth Smith, Needmore, Pa., Lurain Cornell, Everett, Pa., and Phyllis Price, Bedford, Pa.; two grandsons, Rick Malcolm and Brian Malcolm; a step-grandson, James Hoyman, Jr.; three great-grandchildren, Zachary Malcolm, Renee Malcolm, and Raquel "Button" Malcolm; and one step-grandchild, Courtney Hoyman.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Wilson officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Full military rites will be accorded at graveside by combined veterans honor guard.

Pallbearers will be Rick Malcolm, Brian Malcolm, Thomas E. Davis, Jr., Timmy VanHouten, Jim Hoyman, Sr., and Randy Lambert.

RONALD V. BRIDGES, SR.

MOUNT SAVAGE - Ronald V. Bridges Sr., 70, of Mount Savage, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.

Born July 1, 1927, in Mount Savage, he was the son of the late Daniel O. and Anna Frances (Bennett) Bridges.

He also was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Mr. Bridges was retired from the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, Cumberland, and was a former president of the Midnite Bowling League for Kelly-Springfield. He was a member of Mount Savage United Methodist Church and was a veteran of World War II serving in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Myrtle A. Bridges; five daughters, Barbara Taylor and husband Ronald, Bowie, Sharon Blank and husband Carl Sr., Frostburg, Gloria Jean Brick and husband Freeman, Donna Jenkins and husband Cliff, all of Hyndman, Pa., and Brenda Bloss and husband Dave, Mount Savage; one son, Ronald V. Bridges Jr. and wife Cindy, Mount Savage; two sisters, Helena Robinette, Mount Savage, and Audrey Arnold, Grantsville; one brother, Orville Bridges, Frostburg; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cresaptown, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard C. Broome Jr. officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

Pallbearers will be Ronald Taylor, Carl Blank Sr., Cliff Jenkins, Dave Bloss, Carl Blank Jr., and Eric Jenkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Jenkins, Frank Barker, and Fred Murphy.

Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

ROBERT L. BRILL

NEW CREEK, W.Va. - Robert L. Brill, 81, of New Creek, departed this life to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 5, 1997, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.

Born Dec. 26, 1915, at Zepp, Va., he was a son of the late James N. and Rosa (Miller) Brill. He also was preceded in death by his foster parents, Henry and Verdie Ritchie of Needmore, W.Va.; one brother; four sisters; one foster brother; and five foster sisters.

Mr. Brill retired in 1974 after 30 years' service as a general mechanic at the Westvaco Luke Mill. Prior to his employment with Westvaco, he was associated with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Aleutian Islands. He was a faithful and longstanding member of the Church of the Brethren and the Nancy Hanks Post #3518, VFW, Keyser.

Mr. Brill was the loving and dedicated husband of 52 years to Sadie L. (Combs) Brill. He is also survived by a niece, Louise Kirk, Keyser; nephews, Hoyt Whetzel, Baker, W.Va., and Eugene Brill, Keyser; one sister, Ollie Yates, Warrenton, Va.; foster relatives, Edith Ritchie and Bessie Ritchie, both of Westernport, Roy Ritchie, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Frank Walker, Keyser. Along with a large number of other loving nieces and nephews, is a special niece, Christine Funkhouser and family of Short Gap, W. Va.; and special nephews from the Louis and Vivian Combs family.

Friends will be received at the Rotruck-Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the New Dale Church of the Brethren, Baker, on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ward Halterman, the Rev. Herman Baliles, and the Rev. Lloyd Heatwole officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the New Dale Cemetery.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the New Creek Volunteer Fire Department, New Creek, WV 26743.

CLYDE W. BRINKMAN

WILEY FORD, W.Va. - Clyde W. Brinkman, 87, of Wiley Ford, died Monday, March 17, 1997, at the Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit, Cumberland, Md.

Born Oct. 24, 1909, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late J. Howard and Mary Emylie (Gracey) Brinkman. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie C. (Files) Brinkman, in 1986.

Mr. Brinkman was retired from the B & O Railroad. He was a member of the Old Furnace Church of the Brethren, where he served as church deacon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Surviving are one son, William H. Brinkman and wife Mary Jo, Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Betty J. Hatter and husband Charles, and Joan Self and husband William, all of Ridgeley; one sister, Leona Miller, Cumberland; one brother, Howard Brinkman and wife Frances, Cumberland; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Don Mathews and the Rev. Calvin Roop officiating.

Interment will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery, Cumberland.

Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers.

LESLIE I. BRINKMAN

CUMBERLAND - Leslie Irvin Brinkman, 71, of Country Club Road, Cumberland, went to be with the Lord, Monday, July 7, 1997, at Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Born March 5, 1926, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Leslie Helmer and Eva Pauline (Earsom) Brinkman.

Mr. Brinkman graduated from Fort Hill High School in 1944. He was in the Air Force Cadets and Reserves. He was employed at the Streett's Body Shop for 23 years. He was a former employee of the Celanese Corp. He was a Clerical Supervisor at Memorial Hospital and then he became the Director of Safety and Security at the hospital. He also was the owner and operator of Brinkman Home Improvement. He graduated from Allegany College Magna Cum Laude. He was a member of the church council, and Men of St. Luke's past president and treasurer. He was a member of Masonic Fort Cumberland Lodge 211 A.F. and A.M. He was past Venerable Master of the Scottish Rite, 32nd Degree Masons and Knight Commander Court of Honor of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the retirement club of the Scottish Rite and he was on the picnic and oyster committees. He also did 7th, 9th and 10th degree work. He was a past member of the Allegany County Planning and Zoning Commission.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Shirley (Nichols) Brinkman; one daughter, Leslie Ann Thomas and husband Lowell, Cumberland; two sons, Timothy A. Brinkman, Keyser, W.Va.; Brian Brinkman and friend Tina Skidmore and children, Brandon and Rachelle, Cumberland; three grandchildren, Michael Joseph Thomas, Jentiel Thomas and Justin Thomas; two sisters, Doris V. Burley and husband Paul, DeLand, Fla., and their daughters, Susan McGregor and husband George and Linda Gilpin and husband Jeff; and Patricia Twigg, Cumberland, and her son Gregory Twigg and wife Kim; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday at 7 p.m. by the Fort Cumberland Lodge 211 A.F. and A.M.

Services will be conducted at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Pastor Lee A. McDaniel officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services at the church.

Interment will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

The family requests contributions be made to the St. Luke's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or the Ali Ghan Shrine Burn Center.

Pallbearers will be George Smith, Michael Thomas, Justin Thomas, Gregory Twigg, Stanley Zollner, Howard Brode, Jack Clauson, Irvin Johnson and Eugene Streett.
