Dorothy Louise Sullivan
Dorothy Louise Sullivan, 89, of Abell, Maryland, died on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at her residence.
Born June 24, 1911 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late William Ford and Ella I. Bowles Nelson.
Mrs. Sullivan moved to St. Mary’s county 23 years ago from Clinton, Maryland, she was a homemaker. In May 1979, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Francis Sullivan, Jr.
Mrs. Sullivan is survived by her son David J. Sullivan of Wichita, Kansas, by two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, she was preceded in death by a brother Thomas Leroy Nelson and a sister Geneve Baker.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Angel’s Catholic Church, Avenue, MD. Interment followed in Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery, Helen, MD.

Elizabeth Owens Mattingly
Mattingly, Elizabeth Owens on Sunday, January 21, 2001, died peacefully at home in Abell, Maryland.
Beloved wife of James W. Mattingly, Founder of Mattingly’s Finer Foods in Leonardtown, MD, mother of Colonel James Donald Mattingly USMC (Ret.) of San Clemente, CA; Michael Wayne Mattingly of California, MD and Mary Elizabeth Rudman of Leonardtown, MD.
Also survived by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Youngest of 12 children, she was predeceased by brothers, James, Willie, John, Raymond, Benjamin, Larry and Joseph Owens, and sisters, Lillie Ritter, Annie Woodburn, infant Daisy and Essie May Gibson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, January 24, 2001 in Holy Angel’s Catholic Church. Interment followed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Morganza, MD.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Father Pohlmann Educational Fund, 21340 Colton Point Road, Avenue, MD 20609.

Delinda Maria Clarke
Delinda Maria Clarke, 42, of St. Mary’s City, Maryland, died on January 14, 2001 at her residence.
Born on January 14, 1959 in Laurel, Maryland, she was daughter of Jerry Carson of Georgetown, Texas and the late Eileen Perucznik Carson.
Mrs. Clarke has been a resident of St. Mary’s County for twenty years. She attended the University of Maryland and the Culinary Institute of America. She was a Pastry Chef for the Brome-Howard Inn in St. Mary’s City. She also was a member of St. Mary’s Yacht club.
In addition to her father, Mrs. Clarke is also survived by her stepmother, Mae B. Carson of Georgetown, Texas, two sisters, Sharron Brassi of Bethesda, Maryland, Denise Carson Buckley of Accokeek, MD, two brothers, Frank Carson, of Accokeek, Maryland, and Cris Carson of Prince Frederick, Maryland.
A Memorial Service were conducted on Saturday, January 20, 2001 at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, Town Creek Drive, Lexington Park, Maryland 20653. Interment will be private.

Dr. Woodrow Claiborne Henderson, of Leonardtown, MD, formerly of Richmond, VA,
Died on Friday, January 12, 2001 in St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, MD.
He is survived by one son, Woodrow Claiborne Henderson, Jr. of Arlington, VA,; two daughters Anne Henderson Marum of Lexington Park, MD and Catherine Henderson Stein of Silver Spring, MD; two sisters, Vernesa Henderson Mills and Kathryn Henderson Dewberry, both of South Boston, VA.; two nephews, Edwin Dean Henderson of Richmond, VA and Herbert G. Mills, Jr. of Greensboro, NC.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family received friends on Sunday, January 14, 2001 at the Bennett Funeral Home, Richmond, VA.
A Memorial Service was held on Monday, January 15, 2001 at River Road Baptist Church in Richmond, VA.

Joseph Mulry Thompson, Jr.
Joseph Mulry Thompson, Jr., 78 of Piney Point, Maryland, died on Thursday, January 11, 2001 at his residence.
Born on July 10, 1922 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Mulry J. Thompson of Piney Point, MD, and the late Ethel Mae Hern Thompson.
Mr. Thompson moved from Arlington, Virginia to St. Mary’s County 23 years ago. He was an electrician and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, crabbing, gardening and cooking.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife Margaret Evelyn Knezovich Thompson whom he married on August 11, 1944 in Washington, DC. , one son, Joseph M. Thompson, III of Piney Point, MD, three daughters, Jane Ann Nau of Leonardtown, MD, Carolyn Cullison of Piney Point, MD and Mary Lou Burke of Arlington, VA, a brother Donald Thompson of Ashburm VA, sister Mildred Beery of Lake Ridge, VA, thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Thompson.

Dr. Philip Kannarkat Verghese
Dr. Philip Kannarkat Verghese, 30, of Leonardtown, Maryland, died on Thursday, January, 11, 2001 at his residence.
Born September 15, 1970 in Washington, DC, he was the son of Dr. Kannarkat P. Verghese and Dr. Annie P. Verghese of Leonardtown, Maryland.
Dr. Verghese was a graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School and a Post Graduate in Dermatology, at Howard University in Washington, DC. He moved to the St. Mary’s County area in July 1977, and resided until to June 1988 and then returned again in September 2000.
Dr. Verghese is survived by his siblings David Verghese, JoJo Verghese and Nina Verghese.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, January 13, 2001from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A. 22955 Hollywood Rd., Leonardtown, MD. Sheldon George Russell "Captain Shell"
Sheldon George Russell "Captain Shell", 83 of Piney Point, MD, died on Thursday, January 11, 2001 at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park, MD.
Born on February 2, 1917 in Tall Timbers, MD, he was the son of the late George W. Russell and Sarah Shorter Russell.
Mr. Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After being honorably discharged he went to work for the public works department at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station for a short while. Mr. Russell was a boat captain for over 50 years, he fished, crabbed, clammed and oystered the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. He also worked for Stewart Petroleum County in Piney Point. He was a lifetime member of St. George’s Episcopal Church.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife, Winifred C. Abell Russell of Tall Timbers, MD, three daughters, S. Eleanor Strickland of Great Mills, MD, Shirley W. Dorrel of Brooms Island, MD, Patricia A. Morris of St. Inigoes, MD, two sons, Sheldon C. and Walter T. Russell, both of Tall Timbers, MD, nine grandchildren, Ricky E. Dorrell Sr., Sherr L. Dorrell, John B. Morris, III, Jason R. Morris, Shawn Adkins, Joyce E. Strickland, Donald S. Strickland, Michael S. Russell, and Brian T. Russell, seven great-grandchildren, Lauren Dorrell, Merry Dorrell, Rick E. Dorrell, Jr., Josh Dorrell, Bradley A. Tippett, Alison M. Morris, and Joshua Adkins, a sister, Sarah Gohl. He was predeceased by four sisters, Zella White, Bernice Tippett, Shirley Munetz and Jean Kazen and two brothers, Houston Russell and Edward Russell.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, January 14, 2001 from 2 - 5 p.m. at The Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650 where prayers will be recited at 3:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 15, 2001 at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 19167 Poplar Hill Lane, Valley Lee, MD 20692. The Reverend Harold Harper will be officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Marian Alma Hutman, 74, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, died on Sunday, January 7, 2001 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, Maryland.
Born on January 20, 1926 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late John E. and Marian Mann Niess. Mrs. Hutman was a Homemaker. She moved from Forestville, Maryland and has lived in this area for five years. She liked flowers and gardening.
Mrs. Hutman is survived by husband; Michael T. Hutman, Jr. of Mechanicsville, Maryland, whom she married on May 1, 1944 in Washington, DC. She is also survived by a daughter; Janet M. Koerber of Mechanicsville, Maryland, two sons; Michael T. Hutman of Germantown, Maryland and Albert T. Edwards of Lexington Park, Maryland, two sisters; Kathryn Andrews of Mechanicsville, Maryland and Helen Brown of Lexington Park, Maryland, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
