John C. Edelmann

John Charles Edelmann, 82, of Hanover, Pa., formerly of Catonsville, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Homewood at Plum Creek Retirement Community in Hanover, Pa.

Born April 28, 1916, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Roy and Helen Wimmer Edelmann. He was the husband of the late Helen L. Edgar Edelmann.

He was a self-employed butcher, and past president of Hollins Market Merchants Association in Baltimore.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law Ron and Judy Edelmann of Frederick; son Carl Edelmann; daughter and son-in-law Bonnie and Vince Zasadzinski of Winfield; and five grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Burrier Queen Funeral Home, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Winfield, with the Rev. Gayle Annis-Forder of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Winfield, officiating. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Marriottsville.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Myrtis L. Edler

Myrtis L. Edler, 79, of Philadelphia died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, while visiting at the home of a friend in Finksburg.

Born Dec. 8, 1918, in Bridgetown, Va., she was the daughter of the late David and Manie Banister Upshur. She was the wife of Richard Edler who died in 1994.

Surviving are her daughter Flossie M. Edler of Philadelphia; brother Richard Upshur of Virginia and 12 grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Pipe Creek Cemetery, Linwood.

Myers Funeral Home, Westminster is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude S. Hodgin

Gertrude S. Hodgin, 80, of Baltimore, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at the Bay View Hospital Center, Baltimore.

Born April 11, 1917, in South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Marion and Emily Wayne Schwartz. She was the former wife of V. Harvey Hodgin of Baltimore.

She had worked as a secretary for the Durham Life Insurance Company and had taught music to children at home for several years.

She also held other secretarial positions in the Baltimore area at the Child Study Center and for Perry Contractors.

Surviving are son William Hodgin of Sykesville; daughter-in-law Mary B. Hodgin of Bel Air; and eight grandchildren.

She was predeceased by son Victor H. Hodgin Jr. and daughter-in-law Karen Hodgin.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, Md. 32, Sykesville, with the Rev. David Keyser officiating.

Interment will be in Springfield Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

F. Mildred Horning

F. Mildred Horning, 78, of Westminster, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at her home after an extended illness.

Born Dec. 26, 1919, in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Maraud Greenholtz Horning.

Before retiring, she was a seamstress at Westminster Knit. She attended the Church of the Open Door and Super Sixties.

Surviving are sisters Thelma Turner of York, Pa., Naomi Welk of Frizzellburg and Ruby Hersberger of Westminster; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers Lester and Gerald Horning.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster with the Rev. John A. Campbell officiating.

Interment will be in Uniontown Church of God Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from noon until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 95 Carroll St., Westminster 21157.

Ronald L. Mathias

Ronald Leroy Mathias, 60, of Hampstead and formerly of Baltimore, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Bay View Medical Center, Baltimore.

Born Nov. 23, 1937, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Kenneth Sr.and Natalie Martin Mathias.

He was a machinist for Carlisle Glass Company.

Surviving are his sister Jean L. Bellusci of Hampstead; brother Kenneth Mathias Jr. of Sykesville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and interment will be private.

Arrangements are by the Eline Funeral Home, Hampstead.

Walter F. Schaefer

Walter Frederick Schaefer, 79, of Sykesville, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at his home.

Born Feb. 17, 1919, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Walter G. and Agnes Hanlin Schaefer.

He was the husband of the late Olga Mislowski Schaefer.

He had been a construction worker and had served with the Army during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 95 in Baltimore and the Brick Layers Union Local No. 1 of Maryland.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Jean R. and Richard R. Rowles Jr. of Sykesville; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Carroll Hospice, 95 Carroll St., Westminster 21157.

Arrangements are by the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, Sykesville.

John E. `Jack' Thompson

John Edwin ``Jack'' Thompson, 79, of Frederick, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at the Homewood Nursing Home, Frederick.

Born Dec. 9, 1918, in Maryland, he was the son of the late Edwin Easter and Marie Carlisle Smelser Thompson. He was married for 54 years to Mary Elizabeth McBride Thompson.

He was a member of the Frederick United Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Western Maryland College in 1940, and went on to attend graduate school at the Wharton School of Finance. He was later drafted into the Army, where he served with the Medical Administration Corps at Darnall General Hospital, Danville, Ky. He went to Fort Detrick in 1945 and was promoted in 1952 to civilian personnel officer.

Twice during his career, he received the Meritus Service Award from the Army for outstanding civilian service. He also served in the 29th Division National Guard from 1947 until 1955 as captain in the medical division and served as a civilian in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1967. He retired in 1974.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are son David Paul Thompson of Havre de Grace; sons and daughters-in-law John Carlisle and Chris Thompson of Jefferson, and William Lewis and Susan Thompson of Easton; and four grandchildren.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the sanctuary of the Frederick United Presbyterian Church, 115 West Second St., Frederick, with the Rev. Ginger Memmott officiating.

Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Western Maryland Chapter, 1730 N. Market St., Frederick, 21701-4307, or to the American Red Cross, Frederick County Chapter, 2 E. Frederick St., Walkersville, 21793.

Arrangements are by the Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick.

Douglas R. Weishaar Sr.

Douglas Reese Weishaar Sr., 50, of Finksburg, died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

Born Nov. 5, 1947, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of James M. Weishaar Sr. of Westminster and the late Mary Louise Waddell Weishaar. He was the husband of Barbara Bunn Weishaar.

He was a superintendent for Gray & Son of Butler and a member of Carroll County Western Circuit and Carroll County Equestrian Council.

Surviving, in addition to his father and wife, are children Robin L., Amy L., Brian D. and Lauren D. Weishaar; brothers James M. Jr., Robert D. and Charles H. Weishaar; sisters Roxann L. Gilcrest and Lisa M. Bowden; step-mother Ruth Weishaar of Westminster; former wife Bonnie Weishaar; and four grandchildren.

He was predeceased by son Douglas R. Weishaar Jr. and brother Larry E. Weishaar.

Memorial services will be at 8 p.m. Monday at the Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster with the Rev. Jerry Stone of Calvary United Methodist Church officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hoofed Animal Humane Society or to Calvary United Methodist Church, 3939 Gamber Rd., Finksburg 21048.
