Lewis Dullnig
Lewis J. "LJ" Dullnig, 73, of Germantown in Montgomery County, died Jan. 7, 2002 at Shady Grove Hospital in Rockville after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Dullnig was born in Dallas, Texas, on Feb. 6, 1928. He moved to the Washington, D.C., area with his parents in the late 1930s.
After serving in the Navy, he was married in 1951 to the former Alice Bennett.
Before his retirement in 1988, he was a periodicals manager for ARA Inc., formerly the District News Co. of Washington.
He was a member of Mother Seton Catholic Church in Germantown.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, he is survived by seven children, Mary Dullnig and Linda Tucker of Germantown, John Dullnig of Bowie, Chris Dullnig of College Park, Paul Dullnig of Edgewater and Karen and Peggy Dullnig of Columbia; one sister, Virginia Obermeier of Laurel; and nine grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Mother Seton Catholic Church, 19951 Father Hurley Blvd., Germantown. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Cabell Gwathmey
Retired Army Col. Cabell Gwathmey, 99, of Harwood, died of heart failure Jan. 4, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born in Norfolk, Va., Col. Gwathmey graduated from the Naval Academy in 1923 and served in both the surface and submarine service before leaving the Navy. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1929 with an architectural degree.
At the beginning of World War II, he joined the Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed in Algeria and Italy. He was awarded the Legion of Merit.
Col. Gwathmey stayed with the Corps of Engineers through the mid-1950s. He served in San Francisco, Calif., as chief of the engineering division. He also served with the Corps to rehabilitate air bases vital to NATO after the war. Later he worked for the Department of Licenses and Inspections of the District of Columbia.
In 1958, he returned to architecture with the firm of Masten, Hurd and Gwathmey and later with Gwathmey, Sellier and Crosby. His firms did work throughout the San Francisco Bay area including seven rapid transit system stations, community colleges and medical research facilities. This led to consultant work with Atlanta, Ga.'s MARTA transit system.
He was president of the Northern California Chapter of the Americian Institute of Architects in 1961 and a director of the California Region from 1966 to 1969. He also was active with the National Panel of Arbitrators for many years.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in West River and a former member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church of Belvedere, Calif.
He was a Companion of the Military Order of the World Wars, a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers and an Upjohn Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
An avid sailor, he sailed out of the West River Sailing Club and skippered the Chesapeake 20 Endeavor. He had been a member of the San Francisco Yacht Club and sang bass in the Tiburon, Calif., Men's Chorus.
He enjoyed literature and knew by memory many poems of classical writers.
Survivors include his daughter, Margaret Gwathmey of Harwood, and his son, Owen Gwathmey of Jackson, Tenn. He was the widower of Marion Gwathmey and son of the late George Tayloe Gwathmey and the former Margaret Cabell Smith.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church, 220 Owensville Road, West River. Burial will be at the Naval Academy Columbarium at a later date.

Virginia Mathis
E. Virginia Sagner Mathis, 83, of Severna Park, died of cancer Jan. 9, 2002 at her home of 41 years after a long illness.
Born July 31, 1918, in Honeybrook, Pa., Mrs. Mathis was raised in Street in Harford County. She graduated from Harford High School in 1935 and from the Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore as a registered nurse in 1940.
She was a member of Pasadena United Methodist Church and enjoyed ceramics and sewing.
On April 16, 1953, she married Irest E. Mathis.
Also surviving are one son, Gerald Mathis of Willow Street, Pa.; one daughter, Michele Mathis of Pasadena; one sister, Margaret Jones of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Emory United Methodist Church Cemetery in Street.

Robert Mauk
Robert L. "Roy" Mauk Sr., 83, of Davidsonville and formerly of Galesville, died of natural causes Jan. 8, 2002 at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation at South River in Edgewater after a brief illness.
Mr. Mauk, who was also known affectionately as "Big Shortie" and "Pop," was born March 2, 1918, in Baltimore. He was an avid baseball fan, stemming from his high school days when he was a pitcher known for his fastball. After graduating from the old Southern High School in Lothian, he was signed to play with the then-minor league Baltimore Orioles but had to decline after suffering a shoulder injury.
Mr. Mauk owned and operated an electrical contracting company for many years. Later he worked for the state of Maryland as a high voltage electrician at Boys' Village in Cheltenham from which he retired.
He was a duckpin bowler where he also was known for his "fastball."
His wife, Lena V. Mauk, died in 1976. He was the brother of the late Lillian Miller and Danny, Albert and Edward Mauk.
Surviving are two sons, Robert L. Mauk Jr. of Calvert County and Ralph A. Mauk of Davidsonville; one daughter, Carolyn Paddy of Davidsonville; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday followed by the funeral service at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Burial will be private.

Dorothy McBride
Dorothy Esther Elizabeth "Dolly" McBride, 87, a four-month resident of Annapolis and formerly of Carefree, Ariz., died Jan. 9, 2002 at the Annapolis Assisted Living Center after a prolonged illness.
The former Dorothy Gilrane was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was educated in New York City public schools and attended modeling schools in New York.
Mrs. McBride was a professional model during World War II. On Sept. 14, 1940, she was married to E. Stewart McBride.
She was a member of Scottsdale Bible Church in Arizona and Woodside Chapel in Fanwood, N.J.
She was publicity chairman for the Christian Women's Club of Summit, N.J., for several years and an active supporter of Word of Life Fellowship and Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Gardner S. McBride of Arnold; her brother, Harry A. Gilrane of Pinehurst, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Services and burial are private. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral and Memorial Care of Annapolis.

Patricia Proctor
Patricia A. "Pat" Proctor, 68, a resident of Edgewater for more than 30 years, died of natural causes Jan. 8, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
A homemaker, Mrs. Proctor enjoyed her grandchildren and liked all sports.
She was born in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 3, 1934, and married Ralph G. Proctor Jr. on Dec. 21, 1949. He died Oct. 25, 1993.
Surviving are two sons, Raymond G. Proctor of Waco, Texas, and Billy Proctor of Odenton; two daughters, Karen Fridley of Fredericksburg, Va., and Melissa Young of Edgewater; her sister, Edith Cranford of Bowie; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be private.
Mary Register
Mary Josephine Dougherty Register, 88, a resident of Arnold for 30 years, died Jan. 8, 2002 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Severna Park of complications of Alzheimer's disease after a lengthy illness.
A homemaker, Mrs. Register was born in Superior, Wis., on Aug. 28, 1913. She was also a longtime resident of Brooklyn and previously of Suffolk, Va.
She was a member of the Severna Park Ladies of the Elks.
The widow of Harold Register Sr., she is survived by her son, Harold Register Jr. of Arnold; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn Park.

Karen Robertson
Services for Karen Sperlbaum Robertson, 37, of Taneytown in Carroll County, were held this morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bryantown in Charles County.
Mrs. Robertson died Jan. 5, 2002 at her home. The cause of death was not available.
Born Dec. 24, 1964, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of Catherine Sperlbaum of Annapolis and Ronald D. Sperlbaum of Hughesville in Charles County.
She was raised in Hughesville and graduated from St. Mary-Ryken High School where she was a member of the honor society and the varsity field hockey team. She received her degree from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1997.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Joshua Robertson; three children, Nomiki and Zoi Papantonakis and Joslyn Robertson of the home; and her brother, Ronald D. Sperlbaum Jr.of Mechanicsville in St. Mary's County.
Burial was in St. Mary's Church Cemetery in Newport. Arrangements were by Raymond Funeral Home in La Plata.

Thomas Schall
Thomas J. "Tommy" Schall, 38, of Hunt Valley and formerly of Kettering in Prince George's County, died unexpectedly Jan. 7, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Schall was born Jan. 16, 1963, in Washington, D.C., the son of Thomas and Joyce Schall of Riva.
He graduated from Towson University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration, with a concentration in marketing.
Most recently he was a regional sales manager with Biora Inc., a pharmaceutical company. Previously he worked for Johnson & Johnson.
While in college he led his flag football team to the natrional championship in New Orleans, La. A passionate golfer, he loved all sports, particularly basketball and snow skiing. He was an avid Redskins fan.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Ted Schall of Arlington, Va., and Tim Schall of Boston, Mass.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 515 Loch Haven Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.

Jeannette Cantwell
Jeannette Cantwell, 85, of Catonsville and formerly of Arnold who served as a congressional administrative assistant, died of lung cancer Jan. 10, 2002 at her home.
A third generation Washing-tonian, Mrs. Cantwell was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Washington, D.C., where she graduated from Eastern High School. In February 1938 she married John James Cantwell.
She worked on Capitol Hill for 23 years, retiring in 1973. During her career, she worked for two Michigan congressmen, John D. Dingell Sr., and his son, John D. Dingell, the ranking member of the House of Representatives.
From 1952 to 1980 she lived in Hillcrest Heights, where she was very active in the Holy Family Parish and a member of the Sodality. She lived in Annapolis until 1994, when she moved to the Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville following her husband's death in March 1993.
Her interests included cooking, cards and traveling with her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Cantwell was the mother of John Robert Cantwell, who died in 1995.
Surviving are four daughters, Jeannette Chandler of St. Inigoes, Mary Haller of Summerfield, Fla., Kathleen Aymard of Stevensville and Elizabeth LoCascio of North Reading, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2210 Callaway St., Hillcrest Heights, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. in Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Oxon Hill.

Eric Johnson Jr.
Eric Delwyn "E.J." Johnson Jr., the 11-week-old son of Eric D. Johnson Sr. and Jamie L. Capps of Glen Burnie., died Jan. 8, 2002 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore of a respiratory synyctial virus.
Eric was born on Oct. 11, 2001, at Harbor Hospital Center in Baltimore.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandparents, Daria Capps of Annapolis, Michael Capps of Odenton, Geronimo and Cynthia Simms of Severn and William "Buck" Johnson of Annapolis; and his great-grandparents, George B. Capps of Pomfret and Gladys P. Randall of Harwood.
A Christian wake will be held at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Living Waters Worship Center, 8262 Lokus Road in Odenton, followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary of Annapolis.
Grace Johnson
Maria Grace Macrini Johnson, 66, of Catonsville and a former resident of Severna Park for 35 years, died of cancer Jan. 10, 2002 at the Charlestown Care Center in Catonsville after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Johnson was born July 7, 1935, in New York, N.Y., raised in Aruba and attended the University of Maryland for two years.
In 1956, she married Ejner J. "Johnny" Johnson Sr., who served as head of the state Motor Vehicle Administration and chief of staff to former governor Harry R. Hughes.
Mrs. Johnson owned Travel Unlimited Inc. in Severna Park for 15 years.
She was a member of the Panhellenic Club of Annapolis and Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Her interests included travel and ceramics.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Ejner Johnson Jr. of Millersville; three daughters, Maria Paslick of Montclair, Va., Melissa Mullady of Millersville and Michelle Canning of Warwick, R.I.; two sisters, Mary Wills of Cherry Hill, N.J., Elvira South of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, Dominic Macrini of Clearwater, Fla.; and 17 grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Richard C. Johnson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church, 611 Baltimore Annapolis Blvd., Severna Park, with inurnment in the church columbarium.

Meg Mitchell
Meg Mitchell, of Annapolis, died unexpectedly Jan. 9, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born Lorene Claire Meiers in South Dakota, Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Yankton College in South Dakota. Subsequently, she became a flight attendant with Midwest Airlines and was married to Edward Clyde Kicklighter. She lived in Paris and traveled extensively during their marriage.
The family settled in Annapolis in 1961. She taught a business course at Archbishop Spalding High School for 26 years.
Following her divorce, she married Stanley Thomas Mitchell, an engineer with CBS News. The two traveled extensively and helped found the Annapolis Rowing Club, joining friends in competition around the world.
Mrs. Mitchell's passions in life were many, including education, nature, her family and friends and writing. Her work appeared in The Capital, The Washington Post, The (Baltimore) Sun, U.S. Rowing magazine and the New Bay Times.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, John Bradford Kicklighter and Thomas Feiler Kicklighter, both of Annapolis, and two brothers, Loren Meiers of South Dakota and Arnold Meiers of New Jersey.

Mary Lou Shea
Mary Lou Shea, 85, of Burnsville, N.C., died Jan. 10, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Harwood.
Born Aug. 9, 1916, in Michigan, Mrs. Shea attended school in Detroit. In 1940, she married Edward J. Shea, who died in 1992. They made their home in Pelham, N.Y., for many years, retiring to Hillsboro Beach, Fla., and Burnsville.
Mrs. Shea was an accomplished artist who enjoyed sharing her work with others. She was an active parishioner at Sacred Heart Church in Burnsville.
Surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Shea of Raleigh, N.C., and Edward J. Shea III of Lilburn, Ga.; two daughters, Kathy MacAdam of Harwood and Patrice Cannon of Social Circle, Ga.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held in Burnsville at a later date. Local arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.
