Phyllis Baker
Phyllis Mae Jordan Baker, a resident of Glen Burnie for the past 3 years, and a former resident of Pasadena of died of cancer April 11, 2001 at her home after a brief illness. She was 54.
Born Jan. 19, 1947, in Baltimore. She grew up in Pasadena and graduated from Wiley H. Bates High School in Annapolis. Ms. Baker worked for 15 years as a facility engineer for Anne Arundel County Public Schools until she retired in February. She also once worked for the Anne Arundel County Community Action Agency in Annapolis for several years.
She was a member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and had served as secretary and shop steward. She also was a member of the NAACP.
She enjoyed traveling especially abroad, sewing, reading, collecting teapots and gardening.
Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Baker of Glen Burnie; her children, Stacy Renee Townes of Severn, Thomas Leon Baker Jr. and Michael Anthony Baker, Thersha Ann Hall and Twana Carol Baker, all of Glen Burnie; a brother, Anthony Jordan of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; and her former husband, Thomas Leon Baker Sr.
Family and friends may visit from 1 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Joseph H. Brown Jr. Funeral Home, 2140 N. Fulton Ave., Baltimore.
Services funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at NicholsBethel United Methodist Church, 1239 Murray Road in Odenton. A Christian wake will be held one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Betty Butcher
Betty Jane Butcher, a resident of Severn for the past four years, died April 12, 2001 of natural causes at her home. She was 77.
Born April 8, 1924, in Alberton, a former mill town located on the Patapsco River now known as Daniels, she was the daughter of the late Harvey Truitt Bowman and Adelaide Hildreth Brown. She graduated from Forest Park High School in Baltimore in 1942 and attended Western Maryland College where she met and married her first husband, Earl P. Schubert Sr. of Annapolis. They resided in Woodstock, Va., where she taught eighth grade at Massanuttan Military Academy before moving to Silver Spring where she began a career in real estate.
She then married William Butcher who died in 1997. They resided in Mount Airy where they owned a small country store, Butcher's Corner, and she started her own real-estate company.
Her interests included read ing, bird watching and working crossword puzzles.
In addition to her former husband, survivors include her children, Earl "Tom" Schubert Jr. and Sandra Brock, both of Annapolis and William Grant Schubert of Houston, four grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. in Annapolis. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Thomas Hake
Thomas H. Hake, 88, a resident of Annapolis for 60 years, died April 9, 2001 at the Spa Creek Center, Genesis ElderCare Network, in Annapolis. The cause of death was not available.
Mr. Hake was born Aug. 23, 1912, in Harrisburg, Pa., attended the Girard College School for Boys in Philadelphia, Pa., and graduated from Penn State University.
He worked for the Department of Fire and Water in Harrisburg from 1935 to 1939, and then was a mechanical engineer at the former David Taylor Research Center in Annapolis until retiring in 1978.
He was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church and Annapolis Masonic Lodge 89.
In 1939, he was married to Beatrice Herman Hake, who died in 1999.
Surviving are one son, Frederick Hake of Pasadena.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church, 1120 Spa Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Jane Hannum
Jane Fritz Hannum, 75, a 15-year resident of Annapolis, died at her home April 12, 2001 after a long illness.
Mrs. Hannum was born April 15, 1925, in Cleveland. She attended The Laurel School in Shaker Heights, Ohio; Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and later graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, Va., in 1946 with a degree in liberal arts.
While residing in Glen Ellyn, Ill., with her family, she worked as a library assistant at Glenbard West High School. She later moved to Darien, Conn., where she was a homemaker who devoted herself to numerous volunteer activities. She worked as a volunteer at the Darien Community Association, serving on its Scholarhip Committee and working for many years at its thrift shop. She also served as a hospital volunteer at Stamford Hospital in Stamford, Conn.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church in Glen Ellyn, a charter member of the Naval Academy Parents' Club of Connecticut, the International Club of Annapolis, the Naval Academy Women's Club, The New Annapolitans and was a member of the U.S. Power Squadrons from 1960 to 2000.
Her passion was bridge, but other interests included boating, gardening and reading.
Surviving is her husband of 52 years, David L. Hannum; two sons, Timothy L. Hannum of Plantation, Fla., and Douglas E. Hannum of Severna Park; and two granddaughters.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with services set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. in Annapolis.
Inurnment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium.
Memorial contributions may be made to Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation Inc., 64 Franklin St., Annapolis, MD 21401.

James Miller
James L. Miller, a resident of the Cape St. Claire community in Annapolis for 50 years, died April 14, 2001 of lung cancer at his home. He was 75.
Born Feb. 4, 1926, in Cumberland, he grew up there and in Baltimore. He served in the Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946 and served in combat aboard the USS Card aircraft carrier. He later attended Johns Hopkins Univerity and worked as a civil engineer for the Maryland State Roads Commission.
He was an avid reader of history, especially regarding the Civil War. He also loved gardening and was a skilled woodworker.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Miller; three sons, Daniel Miller of Arnold, Jamie Miller of New Orleans, and Samuel Miller of Alexandria; two brothers, Vaughn Miller of Baltimore and Fred Miller of Cape St. Claire; a sister, Shirley Sinnott of Westminister; and two grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, LeRoy Miller.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow, with funeral services set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Margaret Williams
Margaret Frances Connors Williams, a resident of Crownsville since 1954 and a former resident of Annapolis, died April 13, 2001 at her home after a long illness. She was 88.
Born July 2, 1912, in Baltimore, she graduated from the Baltimore City Hospital Licensed Practical Nurse program in 1933 and once worked at Anne Arundel Medical Center and later retired from Crownsville Hospital.
Her husband, Ernest Gilbert Williams died Dec. 28, 1966. She was also predeceased by a brother, Joseph J. Connors, and a sister, Mary Abend.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Stephen Manko of Hanover and Ernest William Manko of Crownsville; a daughter, Margaret Ernestine Hale of Crownsville; two grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren.
Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with funeral services set for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at the Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Gambrills Road in Gambrills. Interment will follow in Glen Haven Cemetery in Glen Burnie.

Deborah L. Adams
Deborah L. Adams, 52, of Annapolis for three years and previously of Pasadena, died of breast cancer June 14, 2008 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore after an eight-year illness.
Ms. Adams was born Oct. 2, 1955, in Baltimore to Bernice Adams of Pasadena and the late John B. Adams. She graduated from Northeast High School in 1973 and attended Anne Arundel Community College.
She worked as an analyst for the National Security Agency for 35 years.
She was a member of the Pen and Quill Society of the NSA.
Ms. Adams enjoyed travel, photography, sewing and making cards on the computer.
Survivors include her husband of three years, Philip W. Jones; one stepson, Kevin Jones of Arnold; one stepdaughter, Barbara Singer of Washington, D.C.; and one brother, Jack Adams of Manalapan, N.J.
Family and friends may visit from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, 3204 Mountain Road in Pasadena.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Donald Crist Sr.
Donald L. Crist Sr., 52, a resident of Edgewater for 29 years, died of natural causes June 12, 2008 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Crist was born March 28, 1956, in Annapolis and was raised in Arnold.
He was a former Pepsi-Cola salesman for 15 years, and then worked at Coca-Cola for eight years. He then became an independent trucker for the last 14 years.
He enjoyed working on and restoring old cars. He belonged to Bay Country Vans from 1978 to 1984.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Lee Crist; and one brother, James S. Crist Jr.
Survivors include one son, Donald L. Crist Jr. of Centreville; one daughter, Amy M. Crist of Edgewater; three brothers, Nelson G. Crist of Arnold, Steven Crist of Summerfield, Fla., and Richard Crist of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and five grandsons.
Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.

Grace Gast
Grace Gast, 87, of Annapolis, died June 14, 2008 at Mandrin Chesapeake Hospice House.
Ms. Gast was born Nov. 4, 1920, in Detroit, Mich.
Survivors include two sons, Tom Kent of California and Stuart Kent of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; and one daughter, Jeanne Kent of Annapolis.

Emma Pass
Emma Grace Pass, 3-day-old daughter of Mark and Robin Pass of Annapolis, died June 14, 2008 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Emma was born June 11 in Annapolis.
Besides her parents, she is survived bytwo sisters, Kate Elizabeth and McKendree Morgan Pass of Annapolis; and her grandparents, Frederick and Elizabeth Leventry of Annapolis, Thomas and Judy Pass of Newbern, N.C., and Wynetta Pass-Kirk of Candor, N.Y.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road in Annapolis. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bay Area Community Church, 884 Chesterfield Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 or to St. Margaret's Day School, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Alexander Young
Alexander J. "Alex" Young III, 72, of Catonsville, died of pancreatic cancer June 13, 2008 at his home.
Mr. Young was born Feb. 14, 1936, in Pittsfield, Mass., to the late Dr. and Mrs. Alexander J. Young. He graduated from Cranwell Preparatory School in Lenox, Mass., attended Georgetown University, received his bachelor's degree from Lafeyette College, and earned a master's degree from Beaver College.
He worked as a chemist at the General Electric Company in Pittsfield before moving to Maryland in 1973. He taught science at both Meade and Severna Park High Schools for the past 35 years.
Mr. Young enjoyed piloting private aircraft and sports, particularly the Boston Red Sox, Hopkins lacrosse and Notre Dame football. He also enjoyed boating, photography, and music and was an active member of his church. Among his greatest passions were his grandchildren and the students that he taught throughout his career.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Pittroff; five sons, Alexander J. "A.J." Young of Fairfax Station, Va., Bill Young of New York, Patrick Young of Zellwood, Fla., Peter Pittroff of Charlotte, N.C., and Matthew Pittroff of Baltimore; one daughter, Cathy Wolfe of New Freedom, Pa..; one brother, William Young of Hollister, Mo.; one sister, Judith Runnette of Norwalk, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.
Family and friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Witzke's Family Funeral Home, 4112 Old Columbia Pike in Ellicott City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 27 Melvin Ave. in Baltimore. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

Anna Parker
Anna Parker, 72, of Gambrills, died of cancer March 29, 2001 at the Crofton Convalescent Center after a brief illness.
Ms. Parker was a homemaker who was born Nov. 4, 1928, in Odenton. She attended Anne Arundel County public schools.
A member of Interfaith Christian Ministries Inc., she belonged to the Junior and Senior Ushers and was active in the Sisters With Power Women's Fellowship, the Adult Sunday School and Bible Study. She also attended the Deerfield Senior Day Center and enjoyed working puzzles, watching television and attending church and gospel singing services.
Surviving are one son, James Howard of Annapolis; two brothers, Benjamin Parker of Odenton and Robert Parker of Bowie; two sisters, Florence Saunders of Annapolis and Mary E. Parker of Gambrills; and one grandchild.
She was the mother of the late Thomas S. Howard.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow with a Christian wake at 10:30 a.m. and funeral service at 11 a.m. at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens.

George Sword
George E. Sword, 81, a resident of North Beach since 1954, died March 30, 2001 at the Millennium Health and Rehabilitation Center at South River in Edgewater. The cause of death was unavailable.
Mr. Sword was born in Brentwood on Jan. 21, 1920. He attended Prince George's County public schools and graduated from Mount Rainier High School.
During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. Later he joined the Navy, specializing as an aircraft mechanic until retiring after 20 years of service in 1964. He then served in the Naval Reserve for another 10 years.
For many years, he was a repairman for Union Vending Co. of Glen Burnie.
Mr. Sword was a member of the Fleet Reserve Club in Annapolis and enjoyed fishing and handyman work.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary H. Sims Sword; two sons, George Edward Sword of Orange City, Fla., and John Hampton Sword Sr. of North Beach; three daughters, Lynda Theodore of Hubert, N.C., Elizabeth Loveless of Owings and Mary Evelyn Sword of Waldorf; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Rausch Funeral Home, Mount Harmony Lane in Owings, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 7910 Woodmont Ave., Suite 1100, Bethesda, MD 20814, or the Fleet Reserve Association, Annapolis Branch, 100 Compromise St., Annapolis, MD 21401.

Eugene Talbert
Eugene E. Talbert, 78, a resident of Dunkirk since 1989 and previously of District Heights, died of cancer April 1, 2001 at his home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Talbert was born in Washington, D.C., on June 16, 1922 and attended District of Columbia public schools.
During World War II, he served with the Coast Guard. Then he worked for the credit union at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for more than 30 years until his retirement as its manager in 1981.
Mr. Talbert was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in West River. He enjoyed humor and jokes and was an avid Redskins fan.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Joyce E. Boon Talbert; three sons, John M. Talbert of Oberlin, Ohio, Richard W. Talbert of Fairfax, Va., and Robert C. Talbert of Chesapeake, Va.; two daughters, Gayle I. Driessen of Columbia and Mary F. Biederman of Tracys Landing; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Rausch Funeral Home, Mount Harmony Lane in Owings. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham.
