Lillian Fisher
Lillian Fisher, 93, died of natural causes April 16, 2001 in Annapolis.
Born in 1907 in London, England, Mrs. Fisher moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., as a child and to Annapolis in the early 1940s.
Initially she was self-employed, opening one of the first day care centers in Annapolis. Later she ran the first Hot Meals Program in the county public schools at Annapolis Elementary School. Subsequently, she worked as a sanitarian with the county Health Department, where she initiated the role of a sanitarian as a team member in the county's Child Care Licensing Program.
Retiring after 30 years service with the Health Department, she initiated the first Meals-On-Wheels Program in the county and served on the county Commission on Aging and the county Board for Affordable Housing.
An avid reader, she belonged to a local book club until her death. She was a staunch supporter of the arts, regularly attending the Annapolis Symphony and ballet and opera performances. She also was partial to the theater, subscribing to Washington's Shakespeare Theatre and the Colonial Players. She served on the Colonial Players' board and acted in many of its plays. She also played the piano, taking lessons into her 90th year and performing piano duets with musician friends until two weeks ago.
Surviving are one daughter, Helen Leitch of Annapolis; a sister, Miriam Cooper of New York, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Norma Martin
Norma Dee Martin, 63, of Annapolis and formerly of Prince George's County, died of pancreatic cancer April 15, 2001 at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Martin was born Oct. 2, 1937, in Washington, D.C., where she graduated from Eastern High School. She also took numerous courses at Anne Arundel Community College.
She was the office manager for the Open Door, a county drug rehabilitation center. Before retiring, she was an administrative assistant for the coordinator of commission activities for the District Court of Maryland in Annapolis.
She was of the Presbyterian faith. Her interests were taking art classes and participating in arts-related clubs. She also enjoyed reading, sewing and baseball. She won various ribbons at local art show and the county fair for her work.
Surviving are her husband, Wilbur W. Martin, whom she married in May 1966; three sons, Robert Felesky of Bladensburg and Daniel and Anthony Martin of Annapolis; one daughter, Linda Carpenter of Mechanicsville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Michael Felesky.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene, 1309 Bay Ridge Ave., Eastport. Burial will be private. Danny Miller
A memorial service for Danny William Miller, 46, of Lothian, was held April 13, 2001 at Raymond-Wood Funeral Home in Dunkirk.
Mr. Miller died April 7 at University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. The cause of death was unavailable.
He was born Feb. 18, 1955, in Corona, Calif., the son of Maurice and Mary Price Miller of Ocean Pines. A self-employed salesman, he lived in Greenbelt and moved to Lothian eight years ago.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of eight years, Joyce Miller; his grandfather, Earl Shiflett of Lothian; one sister, Karen Alley of Lothian; and nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Southern Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 968 Lower Pindell Road, Lothian, MD 20711.
Mary Wanamaker
Mary Shaw Kuck Wanamaker, 76, of Arlington, Va., and Indio, Calif., died of pancreatic cancer April 14, 2001 at her Virginia home.
Born in Manchuria, Mrs. Wanamaker was educated in China. During World War II, she was interned by the Japanese for four years.
In 1945, she went to work as a court reporter for the U.S. Marine Corps in China. Her marriage to William A. Kuck brought her to the United States in 1948. Mr. Kuck, a Marine veteran, died in 1989.
In 1964 she became Librarian of the Court for the U.S. Court of Military Appeals in Washington, D.C. She retired in 1992.
She continued an Oriental import business and traveled extensively. She attended "Old China Hands" reunions, and was known for her love of cooking and gifts of food.
Surviving are her second husband, Warren "Ike" Wanamaker; five children, Kathleen Gallant of Alexandria, Va., Kenneth Kuck of Fairfax, Va., Karolyn Garfinkel of Edgewater, Kristopher Kuck of Scaford, Va., and Keith Kuck of Springfield, Va.; three stepsons, Wayne and John Wanamaker, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and James Wanamaker of Toledo, Ohio; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Elizabeth May Cook of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Amy Roberts of Hornshurch-Essex, England.
Visitation is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Murphy's Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, where a memorial service will follow.
Friends are asked to assemble at 11 a.m. April 23 at Quantico, Va., National Cemetery for graveside services.

Electra Baumgardner
Electra Mae Fulks Baumgardner, 84, of Lewes, Del., died July 6, 2002 at home of congestive heart failure.
Born in Huntington, W.Va., on Aug. 27, 1917, Mrs. Baumgardner was the youngest of the seven children of William A. Fulks Sr. and Georgia Electra Kincaid.
A graduate of Huntington High School, she married Henry Ford Baumgardner on July 6, 1936, in Catlettsburg, Ky. They moved to the Hyattsville area about 1950 and lived there about 45 years. In the last seven years, she lived with her son, first in Annapolis and then in Seaford, Del., and Lewes.
While living in Prince George's County, she participated in local politics, serving as an election judge for many years. She attended the Congressional Breakfast for then-first lady Rosalynn Carter in 1978.
An avid golfer, she had a lifetime membership at Glenn Dale Country Club. She assisted with the Ladies Invitational and the Shields Memorial tournaments. Her interests also included playing cards, crafts, reading and bird watching.
Her husband died in 1988 and her son, Melvin Eugene Baumgardner, died in 1993.
Surviving are one son, Bruce Jay Baumgardner of Lewes; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Fenton Hicks Fulks of Pensacola, Fla.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 tonight at Beall Funeral Home, 6512 Crain Highway, Bowie, where services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in George Washington Cemetery in Adelphi.

Ernest Brown
Ernest M. "E" Brown, 79, a lifelong resident of Annapolis and veteran of World War II, died July 9, 2002 at home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Brown was born in Eastport on Nov. 8, 1922. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945 on the USS Acree in the Pacific theater of operations.
He was the owner and operator of Arundel Vending Inc. in Annapolis for more than 25 years.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Siegert Brown; his children, Glenn E. Brown, Joanne M. Olsen and Dorothy B. Parnian, all of Annapolis; three brothers, Charles W. and Guy W. Brown of Florida and Owen P. Brown of California; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today and tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. A Mass of Christian burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Debra Claro
A funeral Mass for Debra Lynn Claro, 37, of Upper Marlboro, was said July 8, 2002 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro.
Ms. Claro died July 3 at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C., after a long illness.
Born in Washington, she attended the University of Maryland for three years. She worked as a paralegal in the office of the Comptroller of the Currency of the Treasury Department in Washington.
In 1994 she was listed in "Who's Who of American Women."
She was a former member of Mount Calvary Catholic Church in District Heights and a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro.
Surviving are her mother, Joyce Claro of Churchton; one sister, Karen Sousa of Portugal; and one brother, Kenneth Claro of Upper Marlboro. She was the sister of the late Kevin Claro.
Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton where arrangements were by Lee Funeral Home.
Emma Frye-Booze
Emma Leona "Granny" Frye-Booze, 93, of Ferndale, died of heart failure July 8, 2002 at North Arundel Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Frye-Booze was born Aug. 4, 1908, in Baltimore, daughter of the late Eugene H. and Laura Virginia Wood. She worked for many years as a sales clerk for the former Hutzler's department stores in Baltimore and at the Southdale shopping center in Glen Burnie.
She was a member of Harundale Presbyterian Church, Glen Burnie Chapter 63 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Ferndale Senior Center, the Holy Trinity Seniors and the Pascal Senior Center.
Her interests included knitting and reading.
She was the widow of Maxwell V. Frye Sr. and Wesley L. Booze.
Surviving are one son, Maxwell V. Frye Jr., former Anne Arundel County police chief, of Grasonville; one daughter, Betty J. Jordan of Stevensville; three brothers, William Wood of Linthicum, Owen Wood of Upper Marlboro and Howard Wood of North Carolina; two sisters, Bea McNemar of Catonsville and Peggy Quathamer of Linthicum; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late Eugene H. Wood Jr.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 tonight and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kirkley-Ruddick Funeral Home, 421 Crain Highway SE, Glen Burnie. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Harundale Presbyterian Church, with burial to follow in Glen Haven Cemetery in Glen Burnie.

William Mallory
Retired Navy Cmdr. Charles William "Bill" Mallory, 76, a resident of Chartwell in Severna Park for 37 years, died of leukemia July 6, 2002 at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie after a brief illness.
Cmdr. Mallory, the only son of the late Lloyd and Lina Mallory, was born on the family farm near Brewster, Kan., Sept. 17, 1925. He was the valedictorian of the Class of 1943 at Brewster High School.
He attended Kansas State College in Pittsburg before enlisting in the Navy in June 1944. He was assigned to the naval officers training program at the University of Colorado, graduating with honors in mechanical engineering and was commissioned an ensign.
In 1946, he was a member of Adm. Richard E. Byrd's last expedition to the Antarctic and participated in the construction of Little America IV. He returned to the Antarctic in 1947 as the staff construction officer for a mapping expedition. Mallory Point on the Knox Coast of Antarctica was named for him.
Subsequently, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1950 with a degree in civil engineering and married Anne Duffy of Troy, N.Y.
In the 1950s, he served on the staff of Adm. Hyman Rickover and participated in the development of nuclear power plants for submarines. He returned to the Antarctic in 1962 and 1963, directing construction of a nuclear power plant at McMurdo Station. When he retired from the Navy in 1965, he received the Secretary of Navy's Commendation Medal for his work on the development of nuclear power plants for remote military bases.
In 1965 he joined Hittman Corp. as the manager of engineering and served in various capacities in the nuclear and environmental engineering fields.
Active in a number of professional societies, he was the author of over 30 technical papers and held a number of U.S. and foreign patents. He retired from the former Westinghouse Corp. in 1988.
An active member of the Chartwell Golf and Country Club, he was past president and was instrumental in the purchase of the club.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Michael Joseph Mallory of Baltimore; two sisters, Nadine Kammer and Bonnie Reid of Brewster; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 689 Ritchie Highway in Severna Park.
Burial will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 9 in Arlington National Cemetery. Participants should meet at the Administration Building at 12:30 p.m.
Karoline Werner
Karoline Werner of Arnold, and previously of Severna Park, Baltimore and Catonsville, died July 9, 2002 of natural causes at Future Care-Chesapeake in Arnold. She was 102 years old.
Mrs. Werner was born on Oct. 22, 1899, and raised in Alzey, Germany, where she was a nurse and midwife, delivering more 6,400 babies. In 1956 she moved to the United States.
Her interests included gardening and knitting.
Her husband, Adam Werner, died in 1945. Her son, Gunther A. Werner, died in 1994.
Surviving are her daughter, Eleonore E. Leech of Arnold; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. tomorrow with the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie HIghway. Burial will follow at Meadowridge Cemetery, 7250 Washington Blvd. in Elkridge.
Howard Belford
Howard Adam Belford, 80, a longtime resident of Pasadena, died July 20, 2002 at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Belford was born Dec. 13, 1921, in Mahaffey, Pa., and served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He was a firefighter with the Fort Meade Fire Department for 23years, retiring in 1973. He owned and operated the Fire Brake Co. for the past 40 years.
Mr. Belford was an assistant leader of Boy Scout Troop 473; a charter life member and past chief of the Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company; and a member of the board of directors of Riviera Beach and Powhatan Beach Volunteer Fire companies. He was a volunteer firefighter for 58 years.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Catherine R. Belford; five sons, William G. and James R. Belford of Pasadena, David W. Belford of Harundale in Glen Burnie, Richard W. Belford of Spartanburg, S.C., and H. Robert Belford of the home; two daughters, Sharon Funk of Pasadena and Cathy Hoover of Mount Airy; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Stallings Funeral Home, 3111 Mountain Road, Pasadena, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Tommy Groom
Tommy Groom, 56, of St. Albans, W.Va., and formerly of Annapolis, who coached football at the University of Maryland and elsewhere, died of an apparent heart attack July 19, 2002 in Chesterfield, Va.
Mr. Groom dedicated his professional life to football, his family said, from the Charleston, W.Va., Catholic High School football team captaincy to coaching at Colorado, Maryland, Marshall, Virginia Tech, Marietta and other schools. He participated in nine football bowl games.
He finished his career working for both Gilman Gear, selling football practice gear, and the National Football League as its play football session coordinator.
He was born Oct. 7, 1945, in Charleston, the son of the late Harry and Adele Groom. He also was the brother of the late John Groom.
Surviving are four children, Tom Groom of Minneapolis, Minn., Gina Anderson of Tucson, Ariz., and Michael and John Groom of Marietta, Ohio; two sisters, Mickie Marra and Adele Groom; one brother, Bob Groom;and five grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth St., St. Albans. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1023 Sixth St., St. Albans.

Edward Holland
Edward Peck Holland, 85, of Annapolis and formerly of Chevy Chase, died of cancer July 19, 2002 at Ginger Cove Health Center in Annapolis.
Mr. Holland was born in Berkeley, Calif., on Jan. 29, 1917, and grew up in Germantown, Pa. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a degree in aeronautical engineering, and worked at Boeing Aircraft in Seattle from 1942 to 1954.
By then, his interests had changed and he returned to MIT to study international development. He received his doctoral degree in 1958.
He worked on development matters in Venzuela and Singapore under the sponsorship of the U.S. Agency for International Development, and later the World Bank.
Mr. Holland especially enjoyed sailing. In addition to many shorter trips, he made several sailing trips between Annapolis and his summer home in Georgetown, Maine.
He was an active volunteer in Unitarian activities as well as with the League of Women Voters and Amnesty International. He continued as a volunteer at Ginger Cove during almost 14 years of residence there.
In 1938 he married Weltha Blossom Webster. Also surviving are four children, Nancy Buell and William and Zeke Holland, all of New England, and Susan Karbiner of New York City; one brother, Roy Holland of Gillette, Wyo.; and six grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Virginia Paul.
