Catherine Neilson
Catherine Devilbiss Neilson, 94, a hooked rug artist and longtime resident of Arnold, died Jan. 30, 2002 at Future Care-Chesapeake in Arnold after a long illness.
Born in Westminster on Nov. 15, 1907, Mrs. Neilson graduated from Women's College in Baltimore and became a registered nurse. She worked at the former Women's Hospital of Maryland and the former Wroxeter School in Arnold.
She taught first grade at Severna Park Elementary School and started a pre-school program at Asbury United Methodist Church in Arnold.
She was best known for her skill and devotion to the artistry of rug hooking. She was a founder of the Anne Arundel Chapter of the National Guild of Pearl K. McGown Rug Hookcrafters.
She taught the craft as well as made many designs for her own home decorations and to give to friends. In addition to the actual rugmaking, she dyed the wool and created the designs.
She also enjoyed writing and won second place in a Senior Citizens Creative Writing Contest sponsored by the state for her essay, "You Can Go Home Again," about a return visit to her family homestead in Westminster.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church of Arnold and an Orioles baseball fan.
Survivors includ her husband, William Edward Neilson; one son, Ronald Doub of Columbia; and two grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway where the funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will be in the Asbury Church Cemetery in Arnold.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church Building Fund, 78 Church Road, Arnold, MD 21012.

Charles Townshend
Charles B. Townshend, 94, a resident of Davidsonville for 90 years, died of natural causes Jan. 29, 2002 at Heart Home Arundel on the Bay in Annapolis.
Born on July 31, 1907, in Anne Arundel County, Mr. Townshend graduated from Annapolis High School and attended St. John's College. He married the former Ann Kent Linthicum on Jan. 25, 1944. They recently celebrated their 58th anniversary.
A retired Maryland state government worker, he served as supervisor of grounds in Annapolis from 1963 to 1977. He also was a dairy farmer all of his life.
He was a member of All Hallows Episcopal Church, the Annapolis Yacht Club, the Elks Club and the Ruritan. His interests included gardening and traveling the world with his wife.
There are no other immediate survivors.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, 122 Bayard Road, Lothian.
Memorial contributions may be made to All Hallows Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 235, Davidsonville, MD 21035.

Betty Carty
Betty Hibbitts Carty, 71, of Arnold, died of cancer Jan. 27, 2001 at her home after a long illness.
Born July 29, 1929, and raised in Seagraves, Texas, Mrs. Carty also had lived in Laramie, Wyo., Littleton, Colo., and Levelland, Texas. She was married in 1958 in Laramie.
A retired beautician and homemaker, she enjoyed travel, camping, quilting, gardening, sewing, cooking and the beach.
Surviving are her husband, Edward H. Carty; one son, Richard Brian Carty of Stevensville; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Pitts of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 7 p.m. Burial will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Evelyn Gilbert
Evelyn Marie Gilbert, 73, of Crownsville, died of cancer Jan. 28, 2001 at University Hospital in Baltimore after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Gilbert was born in Pennsylvania. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Peter Gilbert; one son, Charles J. Gilbert, and one daughter, Patricia McCawley, both of Ellicott City; two sisters; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, William E. Gilbert.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 4795 Ilchester Road, Ellicott City, with interment at Meadowridge Cemetery in Elkridge.
Contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Evelyn Gilbert Memorial Fund at UMMS Foundation, 29 S. Greene St., Suite 500, Baltimore, MD 21201-1534.

Philip Gerrior
Philip Pickering Gerrior Sr., 72, a lifelong resident of Annapolis and owner of Gerrior's Nursery and Garden Center in Annapolis, died of natural causes Jan. 29, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Gerrior was born in Annapolis on April 23, 1928, and graduated from Annapolis High School in 1946. He was known as an exceptional athlete, playing football and baseball. While running track, he set a long standing record as an anchor in the relays.
Following graduation, Mr. Gerrior served in the Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne, stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1951, and served for several years in the Army Reserve.
After the service, he attended Charlotte Hall Preparatory School where he played football and was a running back for one year. Subsequently, he was offered a scholarship to the University of Maryland. He did not attend, but instead went to work for the Naval Academy in its public works department and then its post office. Later he worked for Anne Arundel County, where he was a grounds supervisor for county schools.
In 1970, he and his wife opened the nursery and garden center, located on Bay Ridge Road, which was sold in 1996.
He was a member of the Annapolis Elks Lodge 622 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 304 of Annapolis as well as of American Legion Post 278 on Kent Island, the Eastport Democratic Club and the Fleet Reserve Club.
Mr. Gerrior was known as an excellent craftsman and woodworker and enjoyed gardening and animals. He was considered a skilled figure skater.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Evelyn Jane Gerrior; his son, Philip P. Gerrior Jr. of Annapolis; two daughters, Donna F. MacDonald and Kimberly G. O'Brien of Annapolis; one brother, Vincent F. Gerrior Sr. of Edgewater; and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Kenneth R. Gerrior.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Eastport, 208 Chesapeake Ave. Burial will follow in Lakemont Cemetery in Davidsonville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Maryland, 1107 Kenilworth Drive, Suite 202, Towson, MD 21204.

John Baker
John Francis Baker, 83, of Annapolis, retired president and chairman of the board of the Hecht Co. department stores, died Jan. 31, 2001 of pneumonia and complications of Parkinson's disease at Spa Creek Center, Genesis Eldercare Network, his home for the last four years. Mr. Baker had lived in Annapolis for the past seven years.
Born in New York City on Feb. 8, 1915, Mr. Baker was the son of Richard Baker and the former Clara McAvoy. He graduated in 1937 from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
He began his long retail career in the bargain basement at Bloomingdale's department store in New York. Later he became assistant buyer of men's clothing at Stern Brothers in New York. While at Stern's he married his longtime sweetheart, Mary Callary.
During World War II he served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation at field offices in New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Detroit, and Washington, D.C.
When the war ended he returned to Stern's. In 1949 he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where he worked for the former Higbee department store, and then to New Orleans, La., where he was vice president and general merchandise manager of D. H. Holmes Co.
While in New Orleans, he served on several charitable boards, and was inducted into the Mardi Gras Krewes of Proteus, Oberon, and Atheneans, which for a "Yankee" was a great social accomplishment.
In 1962 he became vice president and general manager of the Hecht Co. in Baltimore, part of The May Co. nationwide department store chain. He was promoted to president in 1967 and in 1971 president and chairman of the board of Hecht Co. stores in the Baltimore-Washington area. He retired in 1977 and moved to a golf and retirement community in Bay St. Louis, Miss.
For three more years he and an associate operated a retail consulting firm.
In 1992 he and his wife moved to Annapolis. Mrs. Baker died of cancer on Dec. 6, 1996.
He is survived by his son, John F. Baker Jr. of Annapolis; his daughter, Christine Bender of Severna Park; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara McNally, and by his brother, Richard Baker.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 Duke of Gloucester St. Arrangements are by Advent Funeral and Cremation Services.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Spa Creek Christmas Committee, c/o Spa Creek Center, 35 Milkshake Lane, Annapolis, MD 21403.

Victoria Berryhill
Victoria Ann Hall "Vicki" Berryhill, 45, of Newark, Del., and formerly of Annapolis, died Jan. 21, 2001 at her home. The cause of death was not available.
Born in Victoria, Texas, Mrs. Berryhill was the daughter of retired Navy Cmdr. Donald B. Hall Sr. and Elizabeth A. Hottenstein Hall of Annapolis.
A 1973 graduate of Archbishop Spalding High School, she moved to Delaware in 1975 and married William W. Berryhill Jr. in December 1977.
She obtained a bachelor of arts degree in English, graduating magna cum laude from the University of Delaware in 1983. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
She worked for the University of Delaware until moving to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1994. She divorced and returned to Delaware in 1997, where she worked at MBNA and then at CitiBank in the operations unit.
She is best remembered for her love and dedication to rescue, neuter and place homeless cats. She worked through organizations such as the International Cat Association and the Diamond State Cat Club. She also opened her own home to many abandoned cats.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by four brothers, Don Hall of Johnson City, N.Y., Doug Hall of Annapolis, Stu Hall of Centreville and Ken Hall of Millersville.
Friends may visit from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the home of Tracy Byrd Berryhill, 14 Milltown Road, Prices Corner, near Wilmington, Del. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Beeson Memorial Services of Christiana-Elkton, Del.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Humane Society, Black Diamond Road, Smyrna, DE 19977.

Kathryn Bowyer
Kathryn Abbey "Kitty" Bowyer, 91, of Easton and formerly of Annapolis, died Jan. 30, 2001 at Memorial Hospital in Easton.
Mrs. Bowyer was born March 5, 1909, in El Paso, Texas, daughter of Britton Taber Abbey and Merle Mosson Abbey. She graduated from Sophie Wright High School in New Orleans, La., and Draugher's Business College in San Antonio, Texas.
She married William Gilmer Bowyer on Oct. 11, 1930, the day after he graduated from Army Air Corps Flying School in San Antonio. A 1929 graduate of the Military Academy at West Point, retired Air Force Col. Bowyer died in October 1982.
They traveled extensively on his service assignments through the United States, including Hawaii. Following his retirement, they moved to Annapolis. She moved to the Eastern Shore in 1999 to be closer to family.
Mrs. Bowyer had regularly attended the Naval Academy Protestant Chapel and was a member of the Air Force Wives Club of Annapolis. She was a past president of the Colonial Garden Club. Her interests included playing bridge.
Surviving are her daughter, Kathryn Bowyer Bernstein "Kitty Jr." Adams of Easton; two grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Andrew's Chapel at the Naval Academy. Private burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093-5142.

Sarajane Foster
Sarajane R. Foster, 81, a resident of Annapolis since 1979, died of cancer Jan. 30, 2001 at the Ginger Cove Health Care Center.
Born July 31, 1919, in Paris, Ill., Mrs. Foster graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Va., in 1941. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Beta sorority.
She was married on June 30, 1942, to Richard E. Foster, now a retired Navy captain.
She was interested in Naval Academy women's activities and was accomplished in needlepoint.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Sara Ellen Williamson of Raleigh, N.C., and Mary Laura Beisswenger of Athens, Ga.; and two grandchildren. Her son, Randolph L. Foster, died in 1965.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Naval Academy Chapel, with inurnment in the Naval Academy Columbarium. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Arthur Heath
Arthur Dustin "Jinks" Heath Sr., 84, died of cancer Jan. 31, 2001 at his Edgewater home after a six-month illness.
Mr. Heath was born June 28, 1916, in Burlington, Vt., and graduated from Burlington High School in 1935. He had lived in Edgewater for the past 30 years and previously in Chillum for 25 years.
While growing up, he worked on farms in his hometown. Following high school, he moved to the Washington, D.C., area where he worked in the carpentry trade for 25 years. In 1965 he created his own company, remodeling and building custom homes for 30 years, including several houses in Selby on the Bay. He built the steeple on Mayo Memorial United Methodist Church and was a mentor for many young men who became skilled tradesmen.
Mr. Heath was a member of Carpenters Local 132. He enjoyed camping, travel and gardening. An avid animal lover, he raised rabbits and led dogs in obedience trials as a young man. He also enjoyed building vacation homes in the mountains of Maine and Vermont for the enjoyment of his family and friends.
On Sept. 4, 1939, he married Mary Elizabeth Walling Heath.
Also surviving are a son, Arthur D. Heath Jr. of Grasonville; a daughter, Katherine Ann Hoffman of Chester; a brother, Daniel Heath of Rutland, Vt.; two sisters, Marion Bliss of Ludlow, Mass., and Florence Silverstein of Norwalk, Conn.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and C. Kate Story Heath, and two siblings, Charles Heath Jr. and Marceline Clark.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Lakemont Cemetery in Davidsonville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Wendall Johnson
Retired Army Maj. Wendall Sutherland Johnson, 80, of Severna Park, died of heart failure Jan. 30, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness.
Maj. Johnson was born July 17, 1920, in Presque Isle, Maine, and raised in Potsdam, N.Y. He attended the former Potsdam State Teachers College.
During World War II he served in the Army and retired in 1962 from Army Intelligence. He then was a security advisor for the National Security Agency, retiring in 1983.
Maj. Johnson was a member of Masonic Lodge 226 in Severna Park and the Retired Officers Association. He enjoyed working with computers and was an amateur radio operator whose call letters were W3BJI.
Surviving are his wife, Delice E. Johnson; two sons, Jeff Johnson of Stevensville and Kim Johnson of Annapolis; one sister, Philena Lavin of Watertown, N.Y.; and six grandchildren. He was the father of Wendall S. Johnson II, who died in 1994.
Services will be at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Burial will be private.

Clayton Stokes
Clayton Albert Stokes Jr., 77, of Annapolis and previously of Bowie, died Jan. 31, 2001 at his home from complications of a stroke after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Stokes was born Aug. 6, 1923, in Birmingham, Mich. He served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific theater of operations, and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a sergeant.
He retired in 1979 after working 20 years for Chrysler Corp. He lived in Bowie for more than 30 years and moved to Annapolis two years ago.
Mr. Stokes enjoyed golf and working in his garden and he loved ice cream.
On May 18, 1956, he was married to Alvarie Stokes.
Also surviving are one son, Clayton Albert Stokes III of Annapolis; two daughters, Betty June Lee of Dallas, Texas, and Theresa Stokes of Annapolis; three brothers, William C. Stokes of White Lake, Mich., Robert M. Stokes of Marietta, Ga., and Richard T. Stokes of San Antonio, Fla.; two sisters, Beverly Rigney of Luzerne, Mich., and Joanne Hendershot of Clarkston, Mich.; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lakemont Cemetery in Davidsonville. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Janet Wharton
Janet Wharton, 62, of Severna Park, died Jan. 28, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death was not available.
Mrs. Wharton was born July 14, 1938, in Talbot County where she attended public schools. She did light domestic work.
She attended Wayman Good Hope A.M.E. Church in Severna Park and enjoyed shopping, ironing, cleaning, the outdoors and gospel music.
She was the widow of Pete Wharton.
Surviving are a son, Jeff Wharton of Cambridge; a daughter, Pearl Jackson of Severna Park; four grandchildren; and her companion, Washington Jackson Jr. of Severna Park.
Viewing will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Wayman Good Hope A.M.E. Church, 100 Hoyle Lane, Severna Park, where a Christian wake will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by the funeral at 7 p.m. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Carpenter's Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
