George Anderson
George Washington Anderson, 76, a 45-year resident of Annapolis, died Nov. 30, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death is unavailable.
Mr. Anderson was born in Lothian on Jan. 25, 1925. He attended Anne Arundel County public schools and later became a master barber after attending the Barber and Cosmetology School in Baltimore.
During World War II, he was in the Army serving in the European theater of operations.
After the war, he was employed by the Naval Academy, retiring after 35 years of service in 1986. He later worked as a messenger for the Annapolis Banking and Trust Co. He also worked as a barber at various locations in Maryland.
Mr. Anderson was a member of First Baptist Church of Annapolis since the late 1940s, serving as a deacon and singing in the Men's Chorus and the Gospel Choir.
His interests included hunting, fishing and gardening.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Lillie M. Anderson; his son, Nelson L. Anderson of Annapolis; his daughter, Rose M. Anderson of Glen Burnie; three brothers, Stephen M. Anderson of Arnold, Hillary Anderson of Annapolis and Edgar Anderson of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Blanche E. Coleman of Washington; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with a Christian wake at 11 a.m. and funeral services at 11:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 31 W. Washington St. Burial will be at 1:45 p.m. in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.

Thomas Galloway
Thomas Leroy "Tom" Galloway Sr., 66, a resident of Annapolis for 40 years and formerly of West River, died Dec. 2, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Galloway was born May 4, 1935, in West River and attended the former Mill Swamp Elementary School. He was a sharecropper and worked for Gomoljak Concrete Co.
He played baseball for the Edgewater Eagles. During his early years he was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church and Fowler's United Methodist Church. His interests including singing, baseball, wrestling, playing checkers and telling stories.
In 1984 he was divorced from Evelyn Galloway of Annapolis.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas Galloway Jr. of Pasadena and Gregory Galloway of Annapolis; three daughters, Brenda and Linda Galloway of Annapolis and Deborah Galloway of Red Spring, N.C.; his mother, Dorothy Galloway of Annapolis; two brothers, Daniel Galloway of Annapolis and McClain Galloway of Glen Burnie; three sisters, Rosemary Brooks, Anne Galloway-Herbert and Marguerite Ireland, all of Annapolis; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 827 West St., where a Christian wake will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens.

Linda Davis
Linda A. Davis, 42, of Auburn, Calif., and formerly of Crofton, died Nov. 21, 2001 at her home.
Born in Alexandria, Va., Miss Davis was the daughter of Allan S. Davis of Crofton and Alice B. Davis, who died May 21 of this year.
She lived in Crofton for 14 years, graduating from Arundel High School. She subsequently served two years in the Air Force.
In addition to her father, she is survived by two brothers, Mark Davis of Middletown, Va., and Larry Davis of Redondo Beach, Calif.
Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Albert Lewis
Albert P. Lewis, 80, of Edgewater, died Dec. 5, 2001 at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation Center in Edgewater. The cause of death was not available.
Mr. Lewis was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Washington, D.C., and lived in District Heights before moving to Edgewater 30 years ago.
He served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines.
Mr. Lewis was shop foreman for 25 years at Continental Baking Co. After his retirement in 1983, he operated a small lawnmower repair and grass cutting business.
Mr. Lewis was a member of America Legion Post 226 in Mayo. His hobbies included automobiles and he enjoyed tinkering with motors.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Marguerite Ruth Lewis; one son, Charles M. Lewis of Waldorf; two daughters, Carolyn L. Cumberland of Upper Marlboro and Sharon R. Jenkins of Dunkirk; one brother, Charles Lewis of Ruxton; two sisters, Natalie DeToto of Fredericksburg, Va., and Ann VanLandingham of Arlington, Va.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will follow in Lakemont Cemetery in Davidsonville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Frances Richardson
Frances Ruth Richardson, 82, a 33-year resident of Crofton, died of Alzheimer's disease Dec. 4, 2001 at Crofton Convalescent Center after a long illness.
Mrs. Richardson was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Iowa. She attended the University of Maryland. Prior to her retirement, she was employed in the personnel department of The Washington Post, in the editing department of the National Academy of Sciences and as managing editor of the Journal of the American Occupational Therapy Association.
She enjoyed researching her family genealogy, travel, gardening and bowling.
Surviving are her husband, John L. Richardson, whom she married in 1961; three daughters, Sherry Mackenzie of Wheaton, Martha Nicolaou of Rockville and Susan Cornwall of Germantown; one brother, Richard Rasmussen of Deltaville, Va.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her former husbands, Leland Cornwall and Everett China.
There are no services. Arrangements are by Beall Funeral Home in Bowie. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite nature-related charity.

John Sydavar
John Sydavar, 84, a resident of Annapolis for 40 years and formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa., died of natural causes Dec. 5, 2001 at Howard County General Hospital in Columbia after a brief illness.
Mr. Sydavar was born July 1, 1917, in Pittsburgh and served in the Army during World War II in Europe. After the war he graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie-Mellon University, with a degree in metallurgical engineering.
During the 1950s he worked for Westinghouse in Pittsburgh. In 1962 he moved to Annapolis, where he worked at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center as a metallurgist. He retired in 1986.
He was an avid reader.
In 1962 he married Margaret Sydavar.
Also surviving are two sons, Thomas Sydavar of Crofton and Gregory Sydavar of Greenbelt; two daughters, Mary Sydavar Russell of Baltimore and Helen Sydavar of Greenbelt; two sisters, Mary Daggs of Hyattsville and Ann Schwartz of Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, where burial will follow. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral and Memorial Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Richard Abbey
Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Sargent Abbey, 85, who held high posts in the North American and Continental Air Defense commands, died of pulmonary fibrosis Dec. 2, 2001 at his Galesville home.
During his career, Maj. Gen. Abbey also served as deputy chief of staff of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) and assistant chief of staff for Reserve Forces at Air Force headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Born April 3, 1916, in New York City, son of the late Air Force Col. Evers and Ida Sargent Abbey, he graduated from the Military Academy at West Point in 1940 and received his pilot's wings in 1941.
During World War II, he commanded a bomber squadron in Italy and flew 29 combat missions before returning to the United States to become executive officer of the War Department's plans and operations division.
In the early 1950s, after a tour of duty with the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he returned to Europe as chief of the Air Force section of the Military Assistance Advisory Group in the Netherlands. Subsequently, he graduated from the National War College at Fort McNair, where he taught for two years.
Later, he served as director of plans and policies for NORAD and in 1969, became the first commander of the 24th NORAD region, which included most of the Upper Midwest and four Canadian provinces.
He retired in 1971 after more than 30 years of service. His military decorations included the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal with seven service stars and the Croix de Guerre with Palm from France.
Surviving are his wife, the former Eleanor Katherine Quirk, whom he married on June 15, 1940; four children, George Evers Abbey of Sun Lakes, Ariz., Steven Quirk Abbey of Howe, Idaho, William Sargent Abbey of Parker, Colo., and Mary Ann Elizabeth Abbey Howell of Galesville; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Bettie Roath.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Dec. 13 at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hardesty Funeral Home in Galesville. Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

William Boehm
William Joseph "Bill" Boehm, 82, a retired lawyer and resident of Crownsville for 70 years, died of heart and renal failure Dec. 4, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Boehm practiced law in Annapolis for 48 years. He also enjoyed farming in addition to the law, his family said.
Born Sept. 22, 1919, in Baltimore, he attended Arundel High School and in 1943 graduated from the University of Baltimore and passed the Maryland Bar.
From 1943 to 1946 he served in the Army as a second lieutenant and saw combat in Europe. He was in the second wave of U.S. troops to land at Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day in June 1944.
During the late 1950s and early 1960s he served as a police magistrate at the Mountain Road station.
Mr. Boehm was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Annapolis, a life member of Annapolis Elks Lodge 622, past master of Annapolis Masonic Lodge 89, a member of the Scottish Rite and the Shriners and past president of the Eastport Volunteer Fire Department.
He played the banjo and the steel guitar and was a member of the New Kinfolks Band.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy H. Boehm; one son, William Alan Boehm; one daughter, Deborah J. Boehm; one brother, Louis A. Boehm Sr., all of Crownsville; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Evans Funeral Home, Route 450 and Race Track Road, Bowie. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Helen Brown
Helen Augustine "Maude" Brown, 84, of Annapolis and previously of Baltimore, died Nov. 30, 2001 at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation Center in Edgewater after a long illness.
Miss Brown was born Sept. 19, 1917, and educated in Anne Arundel County.
She was employed by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the Board of Education in Baltimore and Suburban Bar, also in Baltimore.
She enjoyed watching the daily soap operas and all Baltimore area sports teams.
Miss Brown is survived by her sister, Catherine C. Lane of Annapolis, and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday with the Christian wake at 12:30 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St. Burial will be in Annapolis Memorial Gardens.

Eleanor Crutchley
Mary Eleanor Crutchley, 77, a resident of Annapolis since 1939, died of heart failure Dec. 4, 2001 at Washington Hospital Center.
Mrs. Crutchley was born July 21, 1924, in Loretta, Pa., and was a homemaker. She belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Edgewater Parole Homemakers Club. Her interests were sewing and crafts.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Ridgley W. Crutchley; four sons, Richard Crutchley of Annandale, Va., Larry Crutchley of Kent Island and Dale and Frank Crutchley, both of Annapolis; two daughters, Donna Malkie of Mayo and Patricia Kosmides of Annapolis; one brother, Donald Little of Harrisonburg, Va.; one sister, Ann Dove of Phoenix, Ariz.; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Robert Joseph Crutchley.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. A funeral Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Claire Greene
Claire E. Greene, 77, a resident of Arnold since 1986, died of cancer Dec. 3, 2001 at her home.
Mrs. Greene was born Nov. 21, 1924, and raised in Cumberland. She graduated from Catholic Girls Central High School in 1943 and later from Allegany Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse.
In 1948 she married John V. Greene. They moved to the Washington, D.C., area in the early 1950s and lived in Wheaton and Silver Spring.
She was a homemaker while her children were young, but returned to nursing from 1970 to 1985 at Montgomery General Hospital in Montgomery County.
She was a member of the Historic Annapolis Foundation, and enjoyed reading, music and traveling with her husband.
Also surviving are three daughters, Mary R. "Bobbie" Badger of Tracys Landing, Catherine E. Collins of Gaithersburg and Elizabeth A. DiBattista of Columbia; two sons, John P. Greene of Arnold and Michael G. Greene of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Mary Norval of Dunedin, Fla., and Jeanne Nose of Baltimore; one brother, Charles Hursh of Lancaster, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 101 Owensville Road, West River. Burial will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108; or the American Cancer Society, Anne Arundel County Unit, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.
Arrangements are by Rausch Funeral Home in Owings.

Joseph Jacoby
Joseph L. Jacoby, 96, a 25-year resident of Arnold, died of cancer Dec. 4, 2001 at his home after a four-month illness.
Mr. Jacoby was born Oct. 1, 1905, and raised in Zobten, Germany. He moved to the United States in 1939 and lived in Brookline, Mass., where he was employed as a leather goods salesman.
At the age of 70, he entered college and finished his education at the age of 82 as a doctoral candidate. Mr. Jacoby's area of study was history. He wrote a book of historical events surrounding his life. Mr. Jacoby was an avid reader.
Surviving are his wife, Kate Jacoby; his son, Fred J. Jacoby of Severna Park; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Services will be private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans HIghway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Esther King
Esther King, the county's third professional librarian who led extensive growth and development of the library system, died of natural causes Dec. 2, 2001 at the Ginger Cove Health Center. She was 97.
Miss King came to the Anne Arundel County library system in 1937, a year after the library was moved from a room in City Hall to the former Reynold's Tavern on Church Circle. Under her administration, new library buildings were constructed including branches at 1410 West St. and in Glen Burnie. The two were supplemented by six community branches in Odenton, Deale, Brooklyn Park, Fort Smallwood, Linthicum and Severna Park.
Before coming to Annapolis, Miss King was head of the Hochschild Kohn bookstore in Baltimore. After taking the county position, she decided to increase the inventory to 10,000 books. Records and framed prints were put on loan, circulation began increasing and library facilities were used by community groups.
Miss King also secured and operated the first bookmobile in the state, calling herself the library "truck driver."
Born Sept. 24, 1904, at Maxwell Moor, the ancestral family home since the mid-1600s in Talbot County, she was the second of six children of William F. and Margaret Dowling King. Her father operated King's Bakery on West Street until after World War II. The family lived at 40 Southgate Ave. until Miss King sold the home in the early 1980s and moved to Ginger Cove. The family also owns Knobby Lodge on Harness Creek.
She graduated from Annapolis High School, received her bachelor of science degree from Goucher College in Baltimore and her master of library science from Columbia University in New York.She was a member and held various offices in many patriotic societies, include the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames 17th Century, Daughters of the 1812, the Eastern Shore Society, the Magna Carta Dames and the Daughters of the Confederacy.
She regularly participated in water sports as a child and as an adult and traveled extensively in this country and Europe.
Surviving are one sister, Miriam King Gilbert of Annapolis; eight nephews; and eight nieces.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., with burial in Baldwin Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery in Millersville.
