Beverly Wirtz
Beverly A. Wirtz, 59, of Shady Side and formerly of Bowie, died of cancer Dec. 1, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore.
Born Nov. 20, 1942, in Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Wirtz graduated from Fordson High School in Dearborn, Mich. She worked for the Multimax Corp.
She was actively involved in Relay for Life and with Hospice of the Chesapeake's Camp Nabe. She loved her Irish heritage and cars.
Surviving are one son, Brent Wirtz of Seattle, Wash.; one daughter, Debra Johnson of Clermont, Fla.; one brother, Kenneth Fabrizio of Snohomish, Wash.; and two grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Charles Fabrizio.
A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Holy Family Catholic Church Chapel, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.
Josephine Bailey
Josephine Bailey, 73, of Easton, died Dec. 2, 2001 at The Pines, Genesis ElderCare Network, in Easton.
Born in Baltimore on Feb. 12, 1928, Mrs. Bailey was the daughter of the late Frank and Veronica Assodowska Miedzienowski. She attended school in Baltimore.
She was married for more than 20 years to Richard Bailey of Hebron. She raised her family in Baltimore until 1965, then moved to Pasadena.
She was employed with the Motor Vehicle Administration in Glen Burnie until 1990.
After her divorce, she spent many years with her companion, Carroll Woody of Easton, where she moved after retiring.
Also surviving are one daughter, Joanne Bailey of Stevensville; and three sisters, Anna Knach, Agnes Burns and Nellie Gutkoska, and one brother, Frank Miedzienowski, all of Baltimore.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sophie Ulbinsky and Helen McCauley, and one brother, Stanley Miedzienowski.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fellows Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester. Burial will be private.
Frank Barnes
Frank E. Barnes, 87, of Pasadena, died of heart failure Dec. 2, 2001 at North Arundel Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Nov. 2, 1914, in Severna Park and raised in Pasadena, Mr. Barnes served in the Army during World War II in the Pacific.
He retired from Lansdowne Trucking Co. where he was a mechanic.
Surviving are two daughters, Laura Reed of New Jersey and Emily Taylor of Baltimore; two stepdaughters, Darlene Trippett of Severna Park and Bertha Martin of St. Mary's County; three stepsons, Richard Goedeke of Glen Burnie, Stephen Goedeke of Virginia and William Goedeke of Florida; and one brother, Ernest Barnes of Pasadena.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Glen Haven Cemetery in Glen Burnie.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Elizabeth Berry
Elizabeth A. "Betty" Berry, 59, of Denver, Pa., died of natural causes Dec. 2, 2001 at home after a brief illness.
Mrs. Berry was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the daughter of Elizabeth A. Jones Spear of Towson and the late Samuel Spear.
Formerly of Ridgely in Caroline County, she was a member of Ridgely United Methodist Church. She graduated from Chesapeake College on the Eastern Shore and worked for 10 years for the Easton Police Department as an administrator and secretary for the chief of police. Since moving to Pennsylvania, she was a fashion consultant with Donecker's of Ephrata.
Known for her work as an artist, Mrs. Berry was accomplished in various mediums, including oils, pastels and stenciling.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 28 years, Junior F. Berry; one son, James E. Berry of Churchton; one daughter, Elizabeth A. Conner of Denton in Caroline County; one grandson; a sister, Audrey Fowler of Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Samuel Spear of Towson; a stepdaughter, Sandra Berry Christian of Odenton; and six step-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Good Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 34-38 N. Reamstown Road, Reamstown, Pa., where the family will receive friends two hours before the service.

Hilda Carper
Hilda May Carper, 71, who owned and operated Carper's Food Rite on Mayo Road in Edgewater, died Dec. 2, 2001 at Heritage Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Annapolis after a brief illness.
Born March 16, 1930, in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Carper, who was also known as "Mrs. C," lived in Edgewater and since 1978 in Churchton.
Her store was originally known as Carper's High's Store before it became Carper's Food Rite.
She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed hunting for treasures at yard sales, collecting antiques and collectibles, and playing bingo.
In 1948 she married Arthur Ralph Carper who died in 1996.
Surviving are four sons, Ralph B. and Allen R. Carper of Edgewater, Arthur E. Carper of Churchton and William R. Carper of Annapolis; two brothers, Joe Weaver of Florida and Harry Weaver of Maryland; one sister, Bettie Ciccarelli of Odenton; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville, where services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Lakemont Cemetery in Davidsonville.

Amy Fisher
Amy M. Fisher, 91, of Arnold and formerly of Florida, died Dec. 3, 2001 at the Charlestown Care Center in Catonsville.
Mrs. Fisher was born in Ohio on Sept. 19, 1910. A retired guidance counselor, she moved to Catonsville in 1984. She was a member of the American Association of University Women.
Her husband, Leland Vernon Fisher, died in 1987.
Surviving are a son, Robert Edwin Fisher of Florida; a daughter, Ann F. Walter of Arnold; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:15 p.m. tomorrow at Hubbard Funeral Home, 4107 Wilkens Ave., Baltimore, with burial in Loudon Park Cemetery in Baltimore. Friends may call 30 minutes before the service.
Rose Hardesty
Rose Louise Hardesty, 79, a resident of Laurel, Del., for eight years and formerly of Annapolis from 1951 to 1993, died of heart failure Dec. 3, 2001 at Nanticoke Hospital in Seaford, Del.
Mrs. Hardesty was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Prince George's County. She retired in 1983 from Basil-Voges Insurance Agency after 30 years of service.
She was a former Cub Scout den leader and former member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church where she was a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed following current events, crocheting, crossword puzzles, bird watching and spending time with her grandchildren.
Her husband, Stanley Allen Hardesty Sr., died in 1998.
Surviving are two sons, Stanley A. Hardesty Jr. of Laurel, Del., and Wayne Franklin Hardesty of Nags Head, N.C.; one sister, Doris Moreland of Mitchellville; five grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Norman R. "Billy" Sweeney and Merton V. Sweeney.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Epiphany Episcopal Church Cemetery in Forestville in Prince George's County.
Lee Johnson
Lee Daniel Johnson, 65, of South Haven and formerly of Bowie, died of cancer Nov. 29, 2001 at his home after a brief illness.
Mr. Johnson was born April 14, 1936, in Glendale, Calif. He attended high school and some college in Hawaii.
In 1986 he retired from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service, the weather satellite research laboratory.
He served as a staff sergeant in the Air Force Reserve in 1962.
He was interested in computers, electronics and digital photography. He designed his home's solar heating system in 1976.
Mr. Johnson was divorced from Peggy Hambach in 1962.
Surviving are his wife, Joanne Symonds Johnson, whom he married Dec. 28, 1963; his mother, Peggy Johnson, and one brother, D. Michael Johnson, both of Kailua, Hawaii; and one sister, Anne Gage of Lexington, S.C.

Helen Jones
Helen May Hanson Jones, 73, of Lancaster, Pa., died of natural causes Dec. 2, 2001 at Conestoga View nursing center in Lancaster.
Born in Baltimore, Mrs. Jones was the daughter of the late Charles Thomas and Grace Edna Jones Hanson. She formerly lived in Columbia, Pa., Baltimore and Stevensville.
She was a high school English teacher for many years at Western High School in Baltimore and later at Annapolis High School.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia.
Her interests included cats, reading, studying, knitting, basket weaving and cooking.
The widow of Jerome Calvert Jones, she is survived by a daughter, Mary Ludwig Shook, and one son, Robert Ludwig, both of Maryland; four grandchildren; and one sister, Grace E. Hanson Lefler of Columbia.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fourth and Cherry streets, Columbia, where friends may call an hour before the service. Burial will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Kraft Funeral Home in Columbia.
Florence Malara
Florence "Flo" Malara, 84, of Annapolis and previously of Watertown, N.Y., died Nov. 30, 2001 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center. The cause of death was not available.
Mrs. Malara was born July 31, 1917, in Watertown, where she graduated in 1935 from Watertown High School.
She was a homemaker and member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis. She enjoyed cooking and being with her family.
Surviving are one son, Anthony C. "Tony" Malara of Siesta Key, Fla.; one daughter, Ann Spillman of Annapolis; one brother, Carmelo F. Gorri of Watertown; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Cumming Funeral Home, 214 Sterling St., Watertown. A funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Bellew and Arsenal streets, Watertown. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Watertown.

Betty Jane Ruppert
Betty Jane Ruppert, 72, a resident of Edgewater for 42 years, died of cancer Dec. 2, 2001 at her home after a brief illness.
Mrs. Ruppert was born Sept. 2, 1929, in Frederick, and graduated in 1946 from Elkridge High School. In the late 1950s she was a proofreader for the Naval Research Laboratory in Annapolis.
She was a homemaker for the rest of her life who raised four children. She enjoyed playing pinochle with her family.
Surviving are her husband, Ernest Ruppert, whom she married in 1947; three sons, Michael Ruppert of McKenny, Va., Ronald Ruppert of Riva and Stephen Ruppert of Cape St. Claire; one daughter, Dawn Ruppert Green of Prince Frederick; one brother, Bobby Baugher of Columbus, Ga.; one sister, Ruth Sample of Greensboro, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was the sister of the late Austin and John McDevitt, Tom Bennett and Danny Baugher.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will be at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Elsie Sherman
A memorial service was held this afternoon at New Life Christian Fellowship Church in Titusville, Fla., for Elsie L. Sherman, 81, who died in her sleep Nov. 29, 2001 at her home in Titusville.
Mrs. Sherman was born in Middletown, Va. She and her husband, the late Charles W. Sherman, moved in 1943 to Arnold to the Belvedere area where they raised a family of 11 children on their farm. They retired to Florida in 1977.
Mrs. Sherman was a former member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Arnold, and in Titusville worked with senior citizens groups.
Surviving are four sons, Charles W. Sherman Jr. and Thomas G. and David Wayne Sherman, all of Titusville, and James R. Sherman of Mims, Fla.; six daughters, Dorothy Carter of Millersville, Barbara Hill of Hanover, Roberta Hall of Norfolk, Va., Nancy Jenkins and Deborah Stanton of Titusville and Joanne Hill of Crownsville; one brother, Floyd Boyce of Milwaukee, Wis.; one sister, Gertie Legg of Virginia; 28 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Ronald Eugene "Butch" Sherman.
Arrangements were by North Brevard Funeral Home in Titusville.
Kenny Adams
Kenny Charles Adams Sr., 53, a former resident of Annapolis, died Nov. 28, 2002 at the Winn Army Community Hospital in Fort Stewart, Ga. after an extended illness.
Born in Annapolis and educated in county schools, Mr. Adams served in the Army seeing duty in Vietnam and retiring in 1987. He had lived since then in Hinesville, Ga.
He was a 32nd degree Mason.
His interests were car racing and building motors.
Surviving are his wife, Essie Adams; three daughters, Kendra Adams, Yolanda Adams and Nedra Houston, all of Hinesville; one son, Kenny C. Adams Jr., of Hinesville; one step-daughter, Army Capt. Shawanda Amerson of Fort Polk, La.; his mother, Bertha Green and stepfather, Robert Green Sr., both of Annapolis; and 15 grandchildren.
He also leaves six brothers, Larry Adams Sr., Robert Green Jr., Carl Green and Reginald Green all of Annapolis, and Jeffrey Diggs and Dunkin Diggs of Davidsonville; seven sisters, Joan Brown of Harrisburg, Pa., and Denise Vauls, Gwendolyn Sellman, Carolyn Martin, Cassandra Green and Athena Green, all of Annapolis, and Jacqueline Diggs of Davidsonville.
He was the son of the late Charles Adams Jr.; and grandson of the late Katherine Murray.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dorchester Funeral Home, 7842 East Oglethorpe Highway, Midway, Ga.
Patricia Bailey
Patricia A. Bailey, 59, of Arnold, died Dec. 3, 2002 at her home after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Bailey was born Sept. 6, 1943, in Baltimore and lived in Glen Burnie prior to moving to Arnold, where she lived for 25 years.
She was a manager at the KOA Campground in Millersville for 10 years.
Also a homemaker, she enjoyed crafts and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Edwin R. Bailey; one son, Charles E. Bailey of Pasadena; two daughters, Hope E. Trently of Severna Park and Heather N. Bailey of Arnold; her mother, Audrey Yingling of Morgantown, W.Va.; three brothers, Chuck Yingling of Maryland, Dale Yingling of Detroit and Lynn Bost of Florida; one sister, Connie Marr of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Mason.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday at the Stallings Funeral Home, 3111 Mountain Road, Pasadena where the funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge.
