James Cully
James Aurther "Buck" Cully, 82, of Annapolis, died Nov. 28, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a long illness. He had diabetes.
Mr. Cully was born May 9, 1920, in Annapolis. He attended the former Stanton Elementary School and graduated from the former Wiley H. Bates High School.
During World War II, he served as a private first class in the Army from 1943 to 1945 and received the American Theater and the Europe-Africa-Middle East service ribbons and the WWII Victory Medal.
He worked at the Naval Academy Laundry until 1975 and was a school bus driver and contractor for Anne Arundel County.
Mr. Cully was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where he sang in the I.R. Berry Chancel Choir. His interests included football and gospel singing.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Elizabeth Chambers; three sons, Gregory T. Cully Sr. of Pasadena and Michael J. and Edward D. Cully, both of Annapolis; one daughter, Rosaline Collaszo of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one brother, Charles Cully of Annapolis; one sister, Vivian E. Drake of Milwaukee, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. tomorrow at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St. A Christian wake will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday , followed by the funeral at 10:30 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 87 West St. Burial will follow in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

James Fowler Jr.
James Edward Fowler Jr., 83, a resident of Harwood for 36 years and formerly of Seat Pleasant, died Dec. 1, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born Dec. 31, 1918 in Aquasco in Prince George's County, Mr. Fowler graduated from Maryland Park High School and served in the Army during World War II.
A lifelong farmer in Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties, he raised tobacco on his Harwood farm until 1990 when he turned the land into a Christmas tree farm.
He was a member of American Legion Post 126 in Forestville and a lifelong member of St. Mathew's Episcopal Church in Seat Pleasant.
Survving are his wife, Doris M. King Fowler, whom he married in 1939; one daughter, Linda L. Suit of Harwood; four sisters, Margaret Kraft of Chesapeake Beach, Irene Hopkins of Friendship and Helen Fenn and Mary Louise Simms of Upper Marlboro; and three grandchildren.
He was the son of the late James Edward and Helen Evans Fowler.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will be at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.

Marilyn Marks
Marilyn Rose Marks, 79, of Edgewater and previously of Riva, died Nov. 30, 2002 at the Severna Park Center, Genesis ElderCare Network.
Born Nov. 25, 1923, in Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Marks was a homemaker.
On Aug. 29, 1941, she was married to William F. Marks, who died Sept. 4, 1997.
Surviving are one son, Thomas E. Marks of Hershey, Pa.; two daughters, Barbara Ziccardi of Chester and Janet L. Speckmeier of Accokeek in Prince George's County; one sister, Jean Sparkes of Palm Coast, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham.

John Oliver
John "Speedy" Oliver, 73, a 29-year resident of Gambrills, died Nov. 27, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Oliver was born Aug. 27, 1929 in Severn and was educated in Anne Arundel County schools.
He was a foreman with Reliable Contracting Co.
Mr. Oliver was a member of Wilson Memorial United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed fishing, cooking, singing, watching baseball, and listening to gospel music.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Oliver, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1949; seven sons, John Oliver and Archie Oliver of Glen Burnie, William Oliver of Columbia, Ronnie Oliver, Walter Oliver and James K. Oliver, all of Gambrills, and Bruce Oliver of Odenton; four daughters, Rose Woodson of Hanover, Janet Oliver and Alice Oliver both of Gambrills, and Ella Queen of Crownsville; four brothers, James Oliver of Crownsville, Archie Oliver and Charles Oliver of Gambrills and William Oliver of Odenton; 30 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Reese and Sons Mortuary, 821 West St., Annapolis and from 9 to 11 a.m., tomorrow with a Christian wake from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at Nichols Bethel United Methodist Church, 1239 Murray Road, Odenton. Burial will follow at Wilson United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gambrills.

Gary Ryon Jr.
Gary Lee Ryon Jr. of Lothian, 13-year-old son of Betty Ryon and the late Gary Lee Ryon Sr., died suddenly Dec. 1, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Gary was born Aug. 24, 1989, in Annapolis. He was in the eighth grade at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School in Upper Marlboro and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Upper Marlboro.
He played soccer for the United Youth Center Wildcats of Anne Arundel County and St. Mary's School. He also played lacrosse for the UYC Wildcats.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Ann Ryon and Ida Rose Ryon, both of Lothian; and his grandparents, Sonny and Betty DeCesaris of Lothian and Betty Ryon of Brandywine. He was the grandson of the late Arthur Ryon.
Visitation with be 6 to 9 p.m. today at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 14908 Main St., Upper Marlboro, where a Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. tomorrow. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church Cemetery on Owensville Road in West River. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Gary Lee Ryon Jr. Scholarship Fund, in care of Bank of America, 14601 Church St., Upper Marlboro, MD 20772.

Agnes Zakens
Agnes Zakens, 71, of Severna Park, died of heart failure Dec. 1, 2002 at North Arundel Hospital after a long illness.
Mrs. Zakens was born May 4, 1931, and raised in Baltimore where she attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and graduated from Patterson High School.
She worked for the Board of Elections for 30 years. A homemaker, she was a member of the Cape Arthur Garden Club.
Her interests included gardening, shopping and travel.
Surviving are her husband, Stanley J. Zakens Sr.; one daughter, Joyce A. Zakens Piatti of Severn; two sons, Stanley J. Zakens Jr. of Odenton and Gary G. Zakens of Pasadena; one brother, George Nelson of Dundalk; one sister, Lillian Shell of Essex; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Thursday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, 5929 Ritchie Highway, Brooklyn Park.

Francis Barrineau
Francis Cecelia Barrineau, 58, of Shady Side, died Nov. 26, 2002 of pancreatic cancer at Spa Creek Center, Genesis Elder Care, after a brief illness.
Mrs. Barrineau was born March 15, 1944, in South Carolina. She received a political science degree from Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
She was employed as a legal secretary by the law firm Calwalder, Wickersham and Taft in Washington, D.C. She also spent time as a mentor and tutor volunteer with USO and loved to study language and various cultures.
Her hobbies included working with her hands, crocheting and sewing.
She is survived by two sons, Jason William Walker of Travelers Rest, S.C., and Sheldon Grant Walker of Greer, S.C.; one brother, Michael Kenneth Barrineau of Charlotte, N.C.; and one grandchild.
All services are private. Arrangements are by the Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent in her name to the American Cancer Society, Anne Arundel County Unit, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.

Thomas Fiddes
Thomas M. Fiddes, 54, died Nov. 27, 2002 of cancer at his home in Severna Park after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Fiddes was born Jan. 2, 1948, in Baltimore. He graduated from Mount St. Joseph's High School and attended Towson State University. He graduated from the University of Baltimore with a degree in accounting.
He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Fiddes began working for the state of Maryland in the Office of Legislative Audit in 1975. He transferred to the Department of Fiscal Services in Annapolis as fiscal administrator in 1981. With the reorganization of the General Assembly officers, he was appointed chief fiscal officer and administrator for finance and administrative services for the new Department of Legislative Services in 1997.
He is survived by his wife, the former Catherine A. Martinelli Karwoski; his father, Donald R. Fiddes of Baltimore; his stepdaughter, Kristin K. Roemer of Arnold; three brothers, Leo R. Fiddes, Dale J. Fiddes and Robert D. Fiddes all of Baltimore; and his sister, Donna M. Pulsipher of Baltimore.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary E. Fiddes.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Barranco and Sons Funeral Home, 495, Ritchie Highway, Severna Park. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Neumann Church, 620 Bestgate Road. Burial will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens.

Patricia Hardesty
Patricia "Pat" Hardesty, 70, a longtime resident of Riva, died of a stroke Nov. 29, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mrs. Hardesty was born August 29, 1932, in Annapolis. In September of 1950, she married William H. Hardesty. She was a homemaker and loved animals, being with her family and playing golf and tennis.
In addition to her husband of 52 years, she is survived by one son, Glenn Hardesty of Davidsonville; three daughters, Brenda Johnson of Bowie, Patsy Lockett of Cape St. John and Amy Hardesty of Edgewater; one brother, Wayne Benchoff of Annapolis; one sister, Joan Dunton of Annapolis; and three grandchildren.
Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel there at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Burial will immediately follow service at Hillcrest Cemetery, 1911 Forest Drive, Annapolis.

Maceo Nash
Maceo Nash, 83, of Annapolis, died Nov. 26, 2002 of pneumonia at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Mr. Nash was born Dec. 28, 1918, in Columbus, Miss. and went to school in Detroit, Michigan.
He served his country and joined the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of Petty Officer First Class.
He was employed by Annapolis Federal Bank, and he was a member of St. Mary's, Fleet Reserve and Unit K East.
His hobbies included painting, singing, whistling and cooking.
He is predeceased by a former spouse, Virginia Hall.
Surviving are his wife of 11 years, Barbara J. Nash of Annapolis; one daughter, Rae S. Mason of Glen Burnie; one sister, Eva N. Martin of Detroit, Mich.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
A Christian wake will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Millers Metropolitan Chapel, 1922 Forest Drive, Annapolis, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.

Samuel Ridgeway
Samuel "Sam" Moyer Ridgeway, 70, of Riva and previously Rockville, died Nov. 29, 2002 at home of cancer.
Mr. Ridgeway was born April 1, 1932, in Takoma Park. He graduated with a BS degree from American University in 1959.
He served in the U.S. Navy helicopter service from 1951 to 1954, during the Korean War.
In 1967 he went to work for Xerox Corporation in their Arlington, Va., office and retired as a senior consultant in 1990.
He was a member of the the Chesapeake Bay Foundation since the 1970s and was president of the South River Ski Club from 1976 to 1982. He also restored early Ford Mustang cars and served for five years as president of the National Capital Region Mustang Club.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Patricia Ridgeway of Riva; one son, David Ridgeway of Edgewater; one daughter, Tracy Nelson of Gaithersburg; one brother, Robert L. Ridgeway of Alpharetta, Ga.; one sister, Louise Hurson of Pasadena; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kalas Funeral Home Chapel, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.

James Crandell II
James Lerch Crandell II, also known as Jimmy Lerch, 55, of Chesapeake Beach and formerly of Annapolis, died at his home Nov. 28, 2001.
A native of Annapolis, Mr. Crandell attended Southern HIgh School and was a member of the Washington, D.C., National Guard from 1965-1970.
He worked as a waterman. He was a member of the former St. John's Episcopal Church in Shady Side.
His hobbies were woodworking, house renovations, hunting, fishing and traveling.
Surviving are his former wife, Carol R. Crandell of Annapolis; his son, James Carroll Crandell of Annapolis; his mother, Fredericka Crandell of Prince Frederick; and two sisters, Gwen C. Klein of Prince Frederick and Sarah Crandell Thomas of Hudson, Ind.
He was the son of the late James Lerch Crandell.
A memorial gathering will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville.
Memorial donations may be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 2 Herndon Ave., Annapolis, MD 21403.

Louis Gottlied
Louis Otto "Lou" Gottlied, 73, of Annapolis, died of lung cancer Nov. 29, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown, after a brief illness.
Born in Baltimore, Mr. Gottlied attended high school in Prince George's County.
In 1957 he founded and was co-owner of the K and G Instrument Co. in Beltsville with his brother-in-law, David Kennedy.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Mary's County, the Elks Lodge No. 622 of Annapolis and the Annapolis Bicycle Club.
His hobbies were decoy carving, fishing, hunting and bicycle riding.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Anne Campbell of St. Mary's City; his mother, Emma Gottlied of Clinton; one brother, Robert Gottlied of Clinton; one sister, Emily Mori of Waldorf; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
His wife, Catherine Gottlied, died in May. They were married for 52 years. He was the father of Stephen L. Gottlied, who died in 1994.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Hardesty Funeral Home in Annapolis. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Ridge in St. Mary's County. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Hospice, P.O. Box 625, Leonardtown, MD 20650 or to the Ridge Volunteer Rescue Squad, Ridge, MD 20680.
