Robert Grant Jr.
Robert Grant Jr., 55, of Lothian, a county high school teacher, died of kidney cancer Nov. 24, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
He was born in Hagerstown and graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1969 and from Johns Hopkins University with a master's degree in administrative sciences in 1976.
He lived in Crownsville and Millersville before moving to Lothian 1 year ago.
Mr. Grant taught mathematics at Old Mill High School for 25 years where he was voted, the "funniest," "most spirited," "most liked" and "most unique" teacher. More recently he taught for Prince George's County public schools and was a substitute teacher at St. Mary's High School in Annapolis.
Mr. Grant was a lay minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Annapolis.
He enjoyed traveling and camping in his motor home and had visited every state in the U.S. except Hawaii.
He also enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, sailing on the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay, going to flea markets and participating in piano sing-alongs.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pamela Jean Grant, who died in 1986.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Grant, whom he married in 1993; four sons, Matthew and Nathan Bell of Lothian, Jason Grant of Loveland, Ohio, and Jeremy Grant of Washington, D.C.; one daughter, Erica Hergenroeder of Annapolis; his parents, Robert J. Grant Sr of Reading, Pa., and Ruth Anne Needham of Harrisburg, Pa.; two brothers, Gerry Grant of Gettysburg, Pa., and Bruce Grant of Harrisburg, Pa.; one sister, Ruthie Colosimo of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis.
Burial is private. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.

Ruth Anton
Ruth Anton, 78, a resident of Millersville since 1973, died Nov. 28, 2001 at North Arundel Hospital.
Born in Patterson, N.J., Mrs. Anton worked at Knollwood Manor Nursing Home from 1973 to 1976.
She then was employed for 20 years at the North Arundel Nursing and Convalescent Center, retiring in 1996.
She was a member of the Ladies of the Moose of Glen Burnie.
Her hobbies were crocheting and doing puzzles.
Survivors include one daughter, Joan Musick of Pasadena; one brother, Wilbur Hall of Wayne, N.J.; and one sister, Rosemary Vinciguerra of Patterson, N.Y. She was the sister of the late Mildred Kamerer.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hardesty Funeral Home with prayers between 7:30 and 8 p.m. Burial will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Totowa, N.J.

John Armstrong
Graveside services were held Nov. 26 at Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville for John Milton Armstrong, 85, of Silver Spring and formerly of Annapolis, who died Nov. 24, 2001 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring.
Mr. Armstrong died of liver complications several days after being admitted with jaundice.
A resident of Annapolis from 1979 to 1996, he was a Latin America specialist at the Central Intelligence Agency from 1948 to 1972. He analyzed intelligence from Central America and the Caribbean and was involved in strategy for the Bay of Pigs and Cuban missile crisis.
He was a prolific artist in a variety of media and a longstanding member of the Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers Society of Washington, where a 67-year retrospective of his work was shown in 1994. Annapolis cityscapes featured prominently in his later work.
Mr. Armstrong was born in St. Paul, Minn., in 1916 to a family of pioneers. His grandfather, George Washington Armstrong, was a land speculator who arrived in St. Paul in 1853 and went on to become the first territorial and later state treasurer.
He received his bachelor of arts degree in zoology from the University of Minnesota in 1937 and a doctorate in anthropology from Yale University in 1947.
His wife of 33 years, Susan Walker Armstrong, died in 1977.
Survivors include two sons, Stuart Armstrong of Silver Spring and Dan Armstrong of New York City; a daughter, Mary Armstrong of Annapolis; and five grandchildren.
Local arrangements were by Taylor Funeral Home.

Virginia Colleran
Virginia "Ginny" Lee Compher Colleran, 72, of Annapolis and formerly of Severna Park, died Nov. 29, 2001 at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, after a long illness with cancer.
Mrs. Colleran was born in Richmond, Va., the daughter of the late Eva Bowen Moxley Bocher and Walter Randolph Compher.
She was a 1947 graduate of Western High School in Baltimore.
A homemaker, she was actively involved in many volunteer activities. These included work in her church, as a Red Cross nurse's aid, a Girl Scout leader and president of the Severna Park High School Booster Club from 1976-1979. She was a member of the New Covenant Church in Arnold. Her hobbies were crafts, sewing, reading and going to the beach.
Surviving are three sons, John Charles Colleran Jr. and Kelly Stephen Colleran of Arnold, and Timothy Michael Colleran of Alplharetta, Ga.; three daughters, Kathleen Patricia Hannon of Arnold, Pattie Ann Robinson of Rineyville, Ky., and Michelle Elizabeth Hahn of Severna Park; her step-father, Jack Francis Bocher of Baltimore; her sister, Patricia Bowen Temple of Towson; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the New Covenant Church, 365 Jones Station Road, Arnold. Burial will follow at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 East Padonia Road in Timonium.

Robert Elder
Robert Bruce Elder, 72, a retired physical oceanographer whose work included exploration of Antarctica, died of cancer Nov. 28, 2001 at his home in Annapolis.
Born in Rochester Mills, Pa., he enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the end of World War II and saw service in the Southwest Pacific.
He was a graduate of Union College in Barbourville, Ky, attended graduate school at Texas A & M University and has a master's degree in marine science from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
He moved to Washington in 1958 and worked as an oceanographer for the Naval Hydrographic Office. During the 1960s, he was a scientist in the U.S. Antarctic Research Program, conducting research regarding the formation of bottom water in a series of trips to the Antarctic.
In 1968, he was chief of the Coast Guard Oceanographic Unit of the first International Weddell Sea Oceanographic Expedition on board the Coast Guard icebreaker Glacier. During this expedition, the boat penetrated the Antarctic's ice pack deeper than any up to that time. A cliff on a peninsula in western Antarctica is named for him.
He later worked as a program director in the National Science Foundation's office of Oceanographic Facilities Funding and Support, retiring from government service in 1981.
He began a home improvement contracting business in Annapolis, specializing in homes in the Historic District. After retiring from this business in 1989, he enjoyed making furniture.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Maryan Furey Elder; two sons, Eugene Everett Elder of Austin, Texas, and Willard Furey Elder of Annapolis; two daughters, Eleanor Elizabeth Elder of Annapolis and Mary Elder Jacobsen of Rochester, Vt.; two brothers, Ernest Elder of New Kensington, Pa., and L. Wayne Elder of Rochester Mills; and four grandchildren. He was the father of David Aaron Elder who died in 1996.
Services are private. His body was donated to the State Anatomy board.

Zilphia Gillis
Zilphia Gillis, 85, a five-year resident of Arundel on the Bay, died Nov. 23, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born in Wilson, N.C., Miss Gillis was a member of the First Baptist Church of Annapolis.
Her hobby was sewing.
Survivors include one brother, Cleveland Jones of Washington, D.C.; and one sister, Aware Turner of Annapolis.
A Christian wake will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the First Baptist Church, 31 W. Washington St., where the funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery in Washington.
Arrangements are by Miller's Metropolitan Chapel, 1922 Forest Drive, Annapolis.

Arthur Jones
Arthur Jones, 98, a long-time resident of Annapolis and previously of St. Margarets, died Nov. 28, 2001 at the Annapolis Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Jones was born in Davidsonville. He attended Anne Arundel County schools and the University of Maryland.
He retired as a foreman with Reliable Contractors and also had been a farmer.
His wife, Elizabeth S. Jones, died in 1979.
He is survived by two sons, Morgan A. Jones of Annapolis, and Stephen C. Jones of Silver Springs, Fla.; a daughter, Peggy E. Dresser of Annapolis; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Davidsonville United Methodist Church Cemetery, 819 W. Central Ave.
Arrangements were made by the Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis.

Louise Jones
Louise "Weasy" Jones, 88, of Annapolis and formerly of Portsmouth, Va., died Nov. 26, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Miss Jones was born in Wilson, N.C. While living in Portsmouth, she was employed by Copeland Farms.
She was a former member of the Martin Luther King United Methodist Church in Portsmouth and attended Fowler United Methodist Church after moving to Annapolis.
She enjoyed gardening and singing.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Miller's Metropolitan Chapel, 1922 Forest Drive, Annapolis. A Christian wake will be held at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home followed by the funeral service at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Bacon Town Cemetery in Laurel.

Dorthy Kalin
A graveside service was held Nov. 25, 2001 at Jewish Cemetery in Baltimore for Dorthy Rae Kalin, 87, formerly of Annapolis and Pasadena, who died of pneumonia Nov. 23 at Alice Manor Nursing Home in Baltimore.
The former Dorthy Wolfe was born in Baltimore and lived in the Eastport area for 20 years. Later, she lived with her daughter in Pasadena for 13 years before moving to Alice Manor two years ago.
A homemaker, she enjoyed sewing, painting, gardening and sculpture.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Rubin Kalin; one daughter, Helen Frances; one brother, Izzy Wolfe; and two sisters, Ida Lee and Rose Fagleman.
Survivors include one son, Gary Kalin of New Jersey; three daughters, Brenda Neal of Pasadena, Judy Kalin of Hawaii and Mary-Jo Levin of Nob Hill in Baltimore County; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Sol Levinson Funeral Home in Reisterstown.

Donald Adams
The Rev. Donald C. Adams Sr., pastor of Sollers United Methodist Church in Lothian, died in his sleep Tuesday morning (Nov. 27, 2001) at his home in Cheltenham. He was 63.
The Rev. Adams had been a pastor at Sollers since 1996, and also at Union United Methodist Church in Lothian.
He was born in Bogalusa, La., and raised in Atlantic City, N.J. He had a bachelor's degree in sociology and education and a master of divinity degree from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He had also studied at Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J., Harvard University and the Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington.
The Rev. Adams served several churches in the Washington area before coming to Sollers. These included Van Buren, Community and Grace United Methodist churches of Washington, and Good Hope United Methodist Church in Silver Spring.
He was born with degenerative optic nerve damage, which left him with 10 percent vision. For his early education, his mother read to him. After his condition was diagnosed, he was able to enter public school and graduated from Atlantic City High School.
He came from a family of Baptist preachers. Early in his ministry he met the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. That association led him to participate in several events in the civil rights movement, including the march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala., and the March on Washington led by the Rev. King in August 1963, when he gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.
He was named Lighthouse Blind Worker of the Year in Washington in 1988.
The Rev. Adams is survived by his wife, Wyoming L. Adams; two sons, Donald Conrad Adams Jr. of Annapolis and Duane O'Connell Adams of Spain; two daughters, Dominque Adams of Cheltenham and Desiree Adams of Germantown; his mother, Willena Adams of Atlantic City; one brother, Morgan Adams of New Jersey; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be held today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 41 Ark Road in Lothian, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. tomorrow with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Snowden Funeral Home in Rockville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sollers United Methodist Church, 1219 Wrighton Road, Lothian, MD 20711.

Elizabeth Hammerberg
Elizabeth L. Hammerberg, 94, a native and lifelong resident of Annapolis, died Nov. 28, 2001 at Heritage Harbour Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of complications from a fall.
Mrs. Hammerberg was born on June 12, 1907. She was a life member of Fleet Reserve Association Unit 24 as well as the Ladies of the Elks Lodge 622.
Her husband, Fred Hammer-berg, died Jan. 16, 1961. She was the sister of the late Edna W. Yost and Margaret O. Macey.
Among her survivors are two nieces, Betty A. Bell and Shirley Kimball of Annapolis.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., with services to follow. Burial will be in Annapolis National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Joan Hildebrand
Joan M. Hildebrand, 70, an associate professor at Towson University, died of a heart attack Nov. 26, 2001 at her home in Arnold.
A 37-year resident of Arnold, Mrs. Hildebrand was born and raised in Harrisburg, Pa. She received a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, and a master's degree and a doctoral degree in early childhood education from the University of Maryland.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ of Annapolis.
Survivors include her husband, Wilbur J. Hildebrand Sr.; two sons; two daughters; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the United Church of Christ. Interment will be private.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the United Church of Christ, 8 Carvel Circle, Edgewater, MD 21037, or the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., Suite 1100, New York, N.Y. 10016.
Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home.
