Joseph Howard
Joseph "Nasty" Howard, 70 of Riva, died of lung cancer Nov. 21, 2001 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Baltimore.
Mr. Howard was born in New York City, and moved to Maryland in 1980.
He served in the Army for two years, in 1952 and 1953.
He was employed in the small appliance repair service business, andwas a member of Moose Lodge 296 and Elks Lodge 622 of Annapolis and American Legion Post 7 in Crownsville.
He enjoyed going to his various clubs and playing cards.
Surviving are one sister, Margie Lyons of Riva; three children, Karen Bono and Joseph and William Howard, all of Long Island, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Annapolis Elks Lodge, 2517 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater.
Funeral services are private. Arrangements are by Advent Funeral and Cremation Services.
Damon Hudson
Damon Chandler Hudson, 32, of Harwood, died Nov. 28, 2001 of complications of a brain injury at Millennium Health and Rehabilitation at South River in Edgewater.
Born in Cheverly, he was educated at Pinewood and Bennett elementary schools in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and graduated from Bowie High School in 1987.
When he lived in Florida, he received two scholarships to the Fort Lauderdale School of Art from Bennett Elementary School.
He was employed with Suburban Services in Davidsonville and Enterprise Air Conditioning in Forrestville.
He enjoyed building Volkwagens, swimming, landscaping, and fishing.
He is survived by his parents, JoAnne Darneille Fitzgerald of Harwood, and Thomas Norman Hudson; and two brothers, Francis Joseph Turano of Easton and Shane J. Fitzgerald of Aspen, Colo.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 905 Galesville Road, Galesville, where funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Burial will follow at Lakemont Memorial Gardens in Davidsonville.

Galen Leach
Galen T. Leach, 88, of Arnold, died Nov. 27, 2001 at the hospice unit of Mercy Hospital in Baltimore after a long struggle with cancer.
Mr. Leach was born in Wichita, Kan., and lived there until 1956 when he and his family moved to Colorado. He was a securities broker in Denver for many years and after retirement moved to Arnold.
He was a member of the Wichita Consistory of the Masonic Order and was a Shriner in Denver.
Surviving are three children, Kathy G. and David A. Leach of Annapolis and D. Brad Leach of Longmont, Colo.; one sister, Margaret Deemer of Wichita; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church, 78 Church Road, Arnold. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21198.
Felisa Park
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 1, 2001 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, 10640 King's Highway, King George, Va., for Felisa Park of Colonial Beach, Va.
Mrs. Park died Nov. 15 from injuries received in an automobile accident in Virginia. She was the co-owner of the Patio and Fireplace in Tappahannock, Va.
Among her survivors are her husband, Karl J. Park, formerly of Annapolis; her mother, Margie Peterson of Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, Joseph A. Anderson of Colonial Beach; two daughters, Marrissa Carta and Nicole Carta, both of Warrenton, Va.; four siblings; and three grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rappahannock Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, 11047 Pierson Drive, Suite N, Fredericksburg, VA., 22408, marked for local needs.
Peter Reid Jr.
R. Peter Reid Jr., 45, of Davidsonville, died Nov. 27, 2001 at his home. The cause of death was not available.
Mr. Reid was born July 23, 1956, in Winchester, Mass. He attended Boston College and graduated from North Shore Community College in Danvers, Mass.
He was a sales director for Sabre Inc. and formerly worked in sales for Arinc of Annapolis.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville and director of the Wynnewood Homeowners Association.
Mr. Reid was an avid pilot who also enjoyed woodworking and sailing.
On July 10, 1985, he married Nancy M. Reid.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Matthew B. and Carolyn J. Reid of Davidsonville; two brothers, Joseph Reid of Winchester and Mark Reid of Billerica, Mass.; his mother, Miriam A. Reid, and his grandmother, Gertrude Russo, both of Winchester.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 8 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W. Central Ave., Davidsonville. Services and internment will be held at a later date in Winchester. Local arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.

Sherrye Yurkovich
Sherrye S. Yurkovich, 58, of Edgewater, died of cancer Nov. 27, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 24, 1943, in Salisbury, Mrs. Yurkovich was a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin and Hood College in Frederick. She was a social worker with the Frederick County Department of Social Services for six years until she became a homemaker.
She lived in West Chester, Pa., for 11 years and Frederick for 20 years before moving to Edgewater seven years ago. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis and enjoyed reading and flowers.
Surviving are her husband, Edward P. Yurkovich Jr., whom she married June 19, 1965; one son, Edward P. Yurkovich III of Annapolis; one daughter, Ellen Sebastiani of Avondale, Pa.; and her mother, Dorothy Scott of Berlin.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Burial will be private.

Mary Ann Allen
Mary Ann Allen, 54, of Wye Mills and formerly of Stevensville, died Nov. 26, 2001 at Memorial Hospital in Easton. The cause of death was not available.
Mrs. Allen was born March 4, 1947, in Camden, N.J, the daughter of Lewis Garrison and Audrey Ann Cohen. At the age of 11 she moved to Stevensville and graduated from the former Stevensville High School in 1965.
She worked as a supervisor at Nationwide Insurance in Annapolis for 20 years and later for Ebersberg and Associates of Severna Park.
She married J.E. Pat Allen Jr. of Wye Mills on Jan. 14, 1993.
She was a member of Bay Country Women of the Moose Lodge 1696 in Queenstown, where she had just received her red stole. She also belonged to the Kent Island American Legion Post 278 Ladies Auxiliary and Christ Episcopal Church in Stevensville.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a stepson, J.E. Patterson "Little Pat" Allen III of Wye Mills; and two brothers, Roy Garrison of Las Vegas, Nev., and William Garrison of Weatherford, Okla. Her sister, Rita Dorrell, died last year.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Fuenral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester, where family and friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Old Wye Parish Cemetery in Wye Mills.

Francis Cowens
Private services were held for Francis Vincent "Frank" Cowens, 61, of Lothian and formerly of Pisgah in Charles County.
Mr. Cowens died Nov. 21, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Born Aug. 2, 1940, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Estelle D. Thomas and John C. Cowens.
He served in the Army and was a plumber, working for a plumbing and heating company.
Surviving are his wife, Sallie A. Cowens of Lothian; one daughter, Lisa Ryan of Owings Mills; three sons, James Presley of Waldorf and Shawn and John Cowens of Lothian; two sisters, Betty Ladd of Waldorf and Mildred Ryan of Oxon Hill; two brothers, Bernard and Paul Cowens of Georgia; and three grandchildren.
Burial was in Huntt Cemetery in Waldorf. Arrangements were by Huntt Funeral Home.
John Ehlers
John F. Ehlers, 98, who incorporated his Christian beliefs into his private and business life, died of natural causes Nov. 26, 2001 at the health center at Ginger Cove retirement community, where he lived for the past 12 years with his wife of 69 years, Ruth Garber Ehlers, age 101.
Mr. Ehlers established the Electric Motor Supply Co. in Baltimore in 1949. After 1971 it was known as TEMSCO and was one of the largest businesses of its type in the mid-Atlantic area.
His devotion to the will of God, as he perceived it from extensive study of the Bible, was expressed not only in his business but in numerous Christian enterprises, his family said.
He was instrumental in the founding of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Annapolis, which initially met at the family home on the Severn River on Sunday afternoons with guest ministers from the region.
He also helped to establish the Belcroft Bible Church in Bowie and the Baltimore Rescue Mission, where he preached as a layman at least once and usually twice a week for more than 40 years.
Mr. Ehlers was the founder and president of the Maryland Camp of Gideons International and traveled the state distributing Bibles. For some years he was treasurer of the Baltimore chapter of the Christian Business Men's Committee.
He and his wife supported the Washington Bible College and Capital Seminary as well as various evangelistic crusades in the area. Mrs. Ehlers also was active in social work during her career.
Born May 19, 1903, in Philadelphia, Mr. Ehlers was the son of John Frederick and Lydia Waring Ehlers, who once farmed in the Winchester area of Annapolis.
He completed the seventh grade and then worked on the farm and for the Western Maryland Railroad, AT&T and the Pennsylvania Water and Power Co. in Baltimore, learning about electricity, and for Wearever Alumninum where he learned sales.
Prior to and during World War II he negotiated contracts with the former Soviet Union through the U.S. Lend-Lease program. He started his own company in 1949.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one sister, Judith Ehlers Kline of Hagerstown.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Lorraine Park Cemetery, 5608 Dogwood Road, Baltimore. Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.
Robert Galloway
Robert Tyrone "BobBoo" Galloway, 46, of Baltimore and previously of Annapolis, died of a heart attack Nov. 22, 2001 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.
Mr. Galloway was born on Sept. 9, 1955, in Davidsonville and attended Anne Arundel Couny public schools.
He served in the Army and then worked as a truck driver for Johnson Refuse Service. He enjoyed sports and cooking.
Surviving are his father, John Galloway; his former spouse, Wyetta Galloway; two sons, Demond R. and Derrick T. Galloway; two brothers, John Galloway Jr. and Charles Galloway; his sister, Rosetta Thomas, all of Annapolis; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Hope Memorial-St. Mark United Methodist Church 3672 Muddy Creek Road in Edgewater, with a Christian wake at 10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Annapolis Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
Albert Helvestine
Albert Harrison Helvestine, 95, of Epping Forest in Annapolis, a retired Navy lawyer, died of natural causes Nov. 27, 2001 at the Heritage Harbour Rehabilitation Center.
Born Sept. 16, 1906, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Helvestine received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and a law degree from George Washington University. During World War II, he served on active duty in the Coast Guard and later in the Coast Guard Reserve, retiring as a commander.
For a number of years, he was chief patent counsel for the Navy, including during the development of the nuclear submarine program, until his retirement in 1974.
His interests were gardening and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred W. Helvestine, whom he married in 1938.
Visitation is at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., where services will be at 11 a.m. Private burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Carlos Lemos
Carlos Brandow Lemos, 84, of Fairhope, Ala., and formerly of Annapolis, died of natural causes Nov. 22, 2001 at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope.
Mr. Lemos was born Aug. 22, 1917, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
While serving in the Army, he participated in four landings, in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy in France and Inchon in North Korea. He retired from the military and worked for IBM Corp. before retiring again.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Annapolis and the Retired Offiers Association.
There are no immediate survivors.
Private services are planned in Fairhope where arrangements are by the Bayview Fuenral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Anne Arundel County Unit, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.
Richard Smith
Richard Lewis "Dick" Smith, 79, died of heart failure on Nov. 26, 2001 at his home in Edgewater, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Vicksburg, Miss., on June 28, 1922, Mr. Smith was a 50-year resident of Edgewater.
He graduated from the Peabody Conservatory and The Catholic University of America.
Mr. Smith was a professional musician. He played trumpet with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kennedy Center Opera Orchestra, the National Theater Orchestra and the National Gallery Orchestra.
He was a former member of the Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
He enjoyed swimming, boating and music.
Mr. Smith was married in November 1948 to Lolita G. Smith who died in May 2000.
Survivors include one daughter, Jessie Halfpap of Edgewater, and and two grandsons.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial will be private.
