Artis Jordan
Artis Marie Jordan, 73, of Riva and formerly of Lanham, died of congestive heart failure Nov. 12, 2001 at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Jordan was born Sept. 1, 1929, in Henderson-ville, N.C., and received a journalism degree from the University of Maryland.
In 1992 she retired as a writer with the U.S. Department of Agriculture where she worked for more than 25 years.
She was a member of Riverdale Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking, gardening and reading.
Her husband, Therian Leon Jordan, died in 1966.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne Jordan of Annapolis and Clinton Jordan of Lothian; three daughters, Brenda Colein of Arnold, Sherri Miller of Sacramento, Calif., and Jennifer Cooke of Riva; two sisters, Myra Freeman of Berlin and Helena Einstein of Cross Junction, Va.; and 11 grandchildren,
She was the sister of the late Curtis Justus and Reba Smith.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., where services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 22 in Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058.

Holly Keefe
Services are private for Holly Jean Keefe, 34, of Severn and formerly of Shady Side, who was a homicide victim Nov. 11, 2001 in Severn.
Ms. Keefe was born in Washington, D.C., and educated in Alexandria, Va. She worked as a limousine driver in the Baltimore-Washington International Airport area.
She enjoyed fishing.
Surviving are her daughter, Lynn Marie Eure of Chesapeake, Va.; her mother, Betty Jean Keefe of Shady Side; one brother, Wallace R. Keefe Jr. of Springfield, Va.; and one sister, Pamela Stillwell of California in St. Mary's County. She was the sister of the late Glenn Patrick Keefe.
Hardesty Funeral Home in Galesville is handling arrangements.

David Martin
David Wesley Martin, 84, a resident of Severna Park for the past 25 years, died of a stroke Nov. 4, 2001 at his home after a year-long illness.
Mr. Martin was born Dec. 2, 1917, and raised in Coatesville, Pa., and previously lived in Indiana and New York. A 1940 graduate of Drexel Univesity in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a consulting engineer who owned Martin Enterprises.
He enjoyed reading, designing engineering work and writing as well as baseball and basketball.
On March 14, 1969, he married the former Diana L. Best.
Also surviving are his children, Mary P. Martin of Anne Arbor, Mich., David M. Martin of Westby, Wis., Scott W. Martin of Austin, Texas, and Kelly L. Martin of the home.
Services and burial are private. Arrangements are by Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

William Pappas
William "Bill" Pappas, 81, a resident of Annapolis for the past 30 years, died of natural causes Nov. 13, 2001 at his home.
Mr. Pappas was born Aug. 3, 1921, in Baltimore and served in the Army during World War II, participating in the invasion of Normandy in France.
He retired in 1985 after working for many years as a machinist with the former Naval Ship Research and Development Center in Annapolis.
He was a member of Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Annapolis.
An avid bicyclist, he was well known in Annapolis as the elderly man who rode his 10-speed bicycle all around the town, until well into his 70s.
He is survived by his son, Andreas Pappas of Annapolis; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Friday at Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 2747 Riva Road, with funeral services immediately following. Burial will be in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville. Arrangements are by Kalas Funeral Home in Edgewater.

Rubye Richard
Services were held today at Miles Funeral Home Chapel in Winfield, Ala., for Rubye Evelyn Richard, 78, of Bowie and formerly of Glen Allen, Ala., who died of natural causes Nov. 10, 2001 at Villa Rosa Nursing Home in Mitchellville.
Born March 3, 1924, in Fayette County, Ala., Mrs. Richard graduated from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Birmingham, Ala., in 1945. She was a retired registered nurse.
She belonged to Glen Burnie United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, John L. Richard of Mesa, Ariz., and Don Richard of Bowie; two daughters, Laura Sadowski of Chester and Lynn Richard of Laurel; two brothers, Roy Aldridge of Fort Payne, Ala., and Bowling Aldridge of Muscle Shoals, Ala.; three sisters, Coy Gilstrap of Glen Allen, Loudell Miles of Birmingham and Mary Nell Clayton of Memphis, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.
Burial was in Glen Allen Cemetery.Irene Slebodnick
Irene Lucinda Scheel Slebodnick, 92, a nine-year resident of Annapolis, died of natural causes Nov. 6 at Heritage Harbour Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Aug. 11, 1910, in Mount Airy to the late Lillie and William A. Scheel Sr., Mrs. Slebodnick graduated from Sibley Hospital School in 1933. She lived in Columbia from 1979 to 1993 and in Albuquerque, N.M., previously. She was a nurse in New Mexico for 45 years.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis.
In 1934 she married Michael Slebodnick who died in 1965. She is survived by her daughter, Lillie Ann Slebodnick of Annapolis; and two nephews.
Her brother, William A. Scheel Jr., preceded her in death.
A memorial Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road. Burial was private. Arrangements were by Hardesty Funeral Home.
Donations may be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake, 8424 Veterans Highway, Millersville, MD 21108.

Anthony Black
A memorial gathering for Anthony Ray Black, 16, of Crofton, will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Dough Roller Restaurant, 1260 S. Crain Highway, Crofton, where Mr. Black worked as a cook for the past two years.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at Martin West Funeral Home, 3839 Montana Ave., El Paso, Texas, followed by graveside services at 2 p.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso.
Mr. Black died Nov. 9, 2001 at the Shock-Trauma Center of University Hospital in Baltimore from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Nov. 8 in Crofton.
Born in El Paso, he was the son of Jennifer Lynne Black of Crofton and Ray Eugene Black of California. He attended South River High School, loved music and basketball and was a junior volunteer at hospitals.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his twin sister, Sarah Black of California; another sister, Logan Colton of Crofton; a brother, Kevin Colton of Crofton; his grandparents, Lynne Futrell and Erika Black of El Paso; and his great-grandmother, Jennie Lawson of El Paso.

Jane Brantley
Jane S. Brantley, 64, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and formerly of Annapolis, died Nov. 6, 2001 at her home after a long illness.
Mrs. Brantley was born Feb. 4, 1937, in Jonesboro, Ark., and attended business school in Washington, D.C. For about 20 years she worked as a conference service director for the Public Broadcasting Service in Washington and then for the National Association of Public Television Stations.
She was formerly married to Albert Dabney Shelton Jr. of Marietta, Ga., and Bobby Brantley of Dunedin, Fla.
Surviving are two sons, David Frederick Shelton of Dunedin and Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Albert Dabney Shelton III, serving in Japan; two daughters, Margaret Lee Shelton of Greer, N.C., and Karan Melissa Brantley of Palm Harbor.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Curlew Hills Funeral Home, 1717 Curlew Road, Palm Harbor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Foundation of the Florida Suncoast, 300 E. Bay Drive, Largo, FL 33770-9850.

Ralph Gentile
Ralph Louis Gentile, 52, of Annapolis, died Nov. 11, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. The cause of death is pending.
Mr. Gentile was born March 25, 1949, in Annapolis, and graduated in 1967 from Arundel High School. He served in the Navy in Vietnam.
For the past 27 years he worked as a supervisor of grounds in the Department of Public Works at Fort George G. Meade.
He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed golf, bowling, coin collecting and softball.
Surviving are his parents, Albert and Doris Gentile of Gambrills; two brothers, Anthony K. Gentile of Millersville and Robert E. Gentile of Severn; one sister, Carolyn Brietrach of Minnesota; and his fiancee, Deborah Proutt of Annapolis.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road, Gambrills, where services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058 or the Alzheimer's Association, 1850 York Road, Suite D, Timonium, MD 21093-5142.

Pauline Gurley
Pauline F. Pruitt Gurley, 84, of Severna Park, died of breast cancer Nov. 11, 2001 at her home after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Gurley was born April 20, 1917, and raised in Ellicott City. She also had lived in Harmans before moving to Severna Park 21 years ago.
She worked as a final assembler at Westinghouse Corp. for 20 years.
She was a member of the Severna Park Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed travel and cooking.
Surviving are her husband, Patrick T. Gurley; one son, William C. Durner of Crownsville; one brother, Harold Pruitt of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Baker of Ferndale; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of the late Arden and Thelma Pruitt.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and tomorrow at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway, where services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery in Ellicott City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Anne Arundel Central, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.

Flora Kane
Flora Ann Kane, 73, of Bowie and formerly of Hanover, died of cancer Nov. 11, 2001 at the Larkin Chase home in Bowie after a brief illness.
Mrs. Kane was born May 10, 1928, in Big Creek, W. Va., and attended Crossland High School. She received a GED in 1972.
She worked as an administrative assistant in Columbia from 1988 to 1998 and a librarian in Hanover from 1999 to 2001.
She was a member of Covenant Baptist Church in southeast Washington, Grace Baptist Church in Clinton and Riverdale Baptist Church. Her interests included embroidery, reading and cats.
On July 1, 1947, she married Earl Kane, who died in August 1998.
Surviving are three sons, Phillip Kane of Beltsville, Robert Kane of Frederick and John Kane of North Beach; two brothers, Charles Duty of Sun City, Ariz., and Jessie Duty of South Dakota; three sisters, Nikie Harris and Lucy Baldwin of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Isabell Liberto of Beverly Hills, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Evans Funeral Home, Route 450 and Race Track Road, Bowie, where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Lakemont Cemetery in Davidsonville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Anne Arundel Central, 1041 Route 3 North, Gambrills, MD 21054.

Mildred King
Mildred Leona "Maw Maw" King, 75, a resident of Edge-water for 38 years and formerly of District Heights, died of heart failure Nov. 11, 2001 at Washington Hospital Center after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. King was born Jan. 18, 1926, in Washington, D.C., and was a homemaker. She enjoyed board games and playing cards.
On Sept. 15, 1940, she married Raymond Thomas King Sr., who died June 20, 1991.
Surviving are two children, Raymond T. King Jr. of Edgewater and Sandy Turner of Annapolis; one brother, Daniel Walker of Upper Marlboro; one sister, Faye Heath of Illinois; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where memorial services will be at noon Friday. Burial will in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Charles Kline
Charles L. Kline, 61, died of heart failure Nov. 11, 2001 at his home in Mayo.
Born Nov. 15, 1939, in Washington, D.C., Mr. Kline was a retired heavy equipment operator who worked for more than 35 years with Operating Engineers Local 77B.
Mr. Kline, who was known as "Charlie Brown" and "Brownie," served in the Marine Corps from 1957 to 1964. He was a member of American Legion Post 226 in Mayo.
For many years he played bass guitar with small bands in the Washington area.
He was the son of the late Joseph Marion and Dorothy Louise Poole Kline.
Survivors include his wife, Cathern "Cathie" Kline; his daughter, Christine Kline of Mayo; and three brothers, Joseph M. Kline of Annapolis, Robert P. Kline of Temple Hills and Edwin P. Kline of Placida, Fla.
There will be no services. His body was donated to science.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058 or to the charity of one's choice.

James Lerner
James Albert Lerner Sr., 75, a resident of Annapolis since 1957, died of natural causes Nov. 10, 2001 at Anne Arundel Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born April 17, 1926, in Lynchburg, Va., Mr. Lerner was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a self-employed waterman. In his younger years he worked as an installer of storm doors and windows.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 34 and American Legion Post 0297. He was known as always being willing to help the needy and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and spending time with his six grandchildren.
On July 27, 1946, he married Winifred Lerner.In addition to his wife and grandchildren, he is survived by one son, James Lerner Jr. of Annapolis; two daughters, Lorraine Robbins and Dana Whitmore of Chesapeake, Va.; four brothers, William D. Lerner of Edgewater, Clarence Lerner of Loxahatchee, Fla., Wallace Lerner of Crescent City, Fla., and Russell T. Lerner of Kent Island; and two sisters, Mary Mitchell of Lynchburg, Va., and Edith Brooks of Concord, Va.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Weems Creek Baptist Church, Ridgely Avenue and Bestgate Road. Burial will follow in Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

Henry McMahon
Henry Thomas "Mac" McMahon, 76, of Stevensville, died Nov. 11, 2001 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
Mr. McMahon was born Nov. 28, 1924, in Baltimore, son of the late Harry T. and Garnetta Ramsay Potec McMahon. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic High School and was drafted into the Army in April 1943. He served during World War II in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe campaigns and was honorably discharged on Oct. 24, 1945.
He married the former Rita A. Murphy on Aug. 18, 1946, in Baltimore, where he owned and operated Valley Refrigeration Sales and Services. In 1967 they moved to Stevensville.
Mr. McMahon was a member of St. Christopher's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 7941, American Legion Post 278, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7464 and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of the Kent Island Yacht Club, the Elks and the Bay Country Moose in Queenstown; co-founder of the Romancoke Community Association; and a charter member of United Communities Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kathy Ayres of Phoenix in Baltimore County and Janet Crutchley of Stevensville; two sons, Pat McMahon of Chester and Mike McMahon of Woolford in Dorchester County; a sister, Bobbie Gress of Arlington, Va.; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 106 Shamrock Road, Chester. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Christopher's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Easton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Communities Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 939, Stevensville, MD 21666.

Elizabeth Sweeney
Elizabeth K. "Betty" Sweeney, 81, a liflelong resident of the county, died of heart failure Nov. 11, 2001 at the Heritage Harbour Rehabilitation Center after an illness of several months.
Mrs. Sweeney was born July 11, 1920, in Gambrills and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Annapolis Moose Lodge. Her hobbies were crafts, cooking and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Philip R. Sweeney Sr., whom she married in 1938; one son, Philip R. Sweeney Jr. of Lothian; two daughters, Patricia Mason of Newport, N.C., and Nancy Sheely of Baltimore; two sisters, Katherine Kirchner of Beaufort, S.C., and Minnie Faudree of Annapolis; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., followed by the funeral service. Burial will be private.
