Joan Greenwell
L. Joan Greenwell, 66, of Lothian, died Oct. 29, 2002 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick due to complications of diabetes and after a lengthy illness.
Born in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 12, 1936, Mrs. Greenwell was raised in Prince George's County. A longtime employee of the federal government, she retired from the Census Bureau in the early 1990s. She was a data processor in the bureau's computer operations center.
She was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church of Lothian.
She loved doing artistic work that included ceramics, sewing and needlepoint, as well as cooking and baking wedding cakes. She also tended to cats and dogs and at one time operated a kennel where she raised and bred cocker spaniels as show dogs.
On Oct. 11, 1968, she married Franklin K. "Frankie" Greenwell. He died April 7.
Survivors include one son, Jeffrey O. Greenwell of Lothian; one sister, Mary Helen O'Day of Lawton, Okla.; and one brother, George Hipple of Laurel.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Rausch Funeral Home, 8325 Mount Harmony Lane, Owings. Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Mount Zion Church, 122 Bayard Road, Lothian. Burial will follow in Trinity Episcopal Church Cemetery in Upper Marlboro.

Spencer Matthews Jr.
Retired Navy Rear Adm. H. Spencer Matthews, 81, the first naval aviation pilot to be promoted to flag rank in the Navy and a resident of Falls Church, Va., died Sept. 24, 2002 at John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Hospital in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
Born in Clarksville, Ark., on May 5, 1921, Adm. Matthews became a pilot in 1942 and flew 50 combat missions in Europe. At the end of World War II, he became a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, becoming Naval Jet Aviator No. 110. He was a graduate of the first test pilot class at Pax River in 1947. After a tour in VP-5, flying PV-2s and P2V-1s, he graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, La., was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and was recognized for his work in mathematics.
He attended the Naval War College and Oxford University as well as the Naval Postgraduate School, graduating first in his class of 505 naval officers.
He was the assistant air boss on a CVE Salerno Bay during the Korean Conflict. He served five combat tours in the Vietnam War, three aboard carriers on Yankee Station in the South China Sea, one as the commanding officer of an amphibious ship and one in country while a rear admiral as deputy commander of Navy Forces Vietnam and vice chief of the Vietnamese navy.
Besides commanding Attack Squadron 113 and Carrier Air Group Two on various aircraft carriers, he headed the Naval Aviation Basic Training Command in Pensacola, Fla.
After Vietnam he was transferred to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations where he was first head of the aviation training divisions and aircraft carrier division, and was responsible for the introduction of flight simulators into training commands and the fleet.
He retired from the Navy after 33 years of service in August 1973. Among his 36 medals and awards were the Distinguished Service Medal (v), the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star (v), 11 Air Medals, both the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Navy Commendation medals and 12 foreign medals.
Subsequently he ran a congressional office until 1979. He was a consultant to the Martin Marietta Corp. from 1979 to 1991, president of four small companies he founded and served on the boards of two corporations and four charitable foundations. He was a trustee of the Naval Academy Foundation.
Surviving are his wife, Diane Ford Matthews; three daughters, Kathryn Lovering of Cornwall, England, Patricia Miller of Annapolis and Ann Karpis of Atlanta, Ga.; one stepdaughter, Allison Ford of New Haven, Conn.; six grandsons; and four sisters, Lynn Dempster, Alice Gardner, Jo Marie Sikes and Juanita Edwards, all of Sikeston, Mo.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington, with inurnment in Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home in Alexandria.

Henrietta Bloomer
Henrietta Bloomer, 98, of Annapolis, who was a foster mother to more than 40 children, died of cancer Oct. 28, 2000 at Mariner Health of North Arundel in Glen Burnie after a long illness.
Born in Lima, Pa., Mrs. Bloomer was married to Jacob M. Bloomer, who died in 1962.
As a foster mother, she cared for many special needs children through the Anne Arundel County Department of Foster Care. Foster children include Dorothy Butler of Annapolis, who was 2 years old when she came to live with Mrs. Bloomer and who was raised by her, and Robert Groce, 39, a special needs child for whom she cared since he was 3 days old and later adopted.
Mrs. Bloomer attended Anne Arundel Community College where she took sign language classes and grant writing courses when she was in her 60s.
She worked for Busch's Chesapeake Restaurant from 1940 to 1960 and then for the county Department of Aging, retiring at age 72.
Mrs. Bloomer traveled throughout Europe, including Germany, Italy, Holland, France and England. She traveled to Canada every summer. She also loved animals.
In addition to her adopted son, she is survived by two sons, John Franklin Bloomer and Charles William Bloomer, both of Annapolis; two daughters, Barbara Thomas of Owings Mills and Susan Whitney of Temple, Texas; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughters, Eleanor Hewlett and Mary Davenport, and three siblings, Walter and Joseph Dean and Bertha Colbert.
Services are private and arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.
Dawn DeStefano
Dawn M. DeStefano, 33, of Pasadena, was a homicide victim in Baltimore on Oct. 28, 2000.
Ms. DeStefano was born in Baltimore and attended Northeast High School. She was a self-employed abstractor in real estate.
She loved her family and her pets and enjoyed travel.
Surviving are her daughter, Cristina Dawn DeStefano; her sister, Carol L. Smith of Pasadena; and her parents, Wayne C. Bateman of Arnold and Esther L. Rew of Delaware.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Stallings Funeral Home, 3111 Mountain Road, Pasadena, followed by funeral services at 8 p.m.

Jim Foltz
Hoye Conrad "Jim" Foltz, 76, of Whisper Mountain Estates in Franklin, N.C., and formerly of Annapolis, died Oct. 29, 2000 at Angel Medical Center in Franklin.
A native of Hagerstown, Mr. Foltz was the son of the late Fred L. and Senor Barham Foltz. He worked at Fairchild Corp. in Hagerstown, was a welder for John Trumpy and Sons Inc. in Annapolis from 1949 to 1964 and retired as a welder from the former Eastern Air Lines.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant. He received a Purple Heart medal.
Interested in golf, he was a charter member of the Professional Golfers Association and a member of the Annapolis Country Club and the Millcreek Country Club in North Carolina. He also was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hagerstown and a member of the VFW in Annapolis, the American Rifle Association and the North Carolina Bowling Association.
While in this area he taught youth baseball sponsored by the Annapolis Kiwanis Club. He also participated in the Senior Olympics.
Surviving are three children, Cindy Wines and Wayne and Jeff Foltz, all of Annapolis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was formerly married to Mary Lou Crawford of Annapolis.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight and from 1 to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Macon Funeral Home, 97 Iolta St., Franklin, with services at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Franklin. Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Lucile Hulbert
Lucile Bartholomew Hulbert, 83, of Melbourne, Fla., and formerly of Severna Park, died of cancer Oct. 28, 2000 at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Fla. after a brief illness.
Born and raised in Bethlehem, Pa., Mrs. Hulbert attended Moravian College in Bethlehem. She lived in Falls Church, Va., for 10 years before moving to Severna Park where she lived for 10 years. She moved to Melbourne about five years ago.
She was a member of the King's Daughters, a Moravian Church group. She enjoyed reading, watching golf and doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Preston of Melbourne and Joan Wentz of Pasadena; one sister, Carolyn Backer of Hartford, Conn.; and five grandchildren. She was the widow of Yale Hulbert.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Barranco and Sons Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Highway. Burial will be in Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood.

Kendall Johns
Kendall Augustus "Shorty" Johns, 90, of Severn and formerly of Annapolis, died of natural causes Oct. 29, 2000 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in St. Mary's County.
Born and raised in what was once Camp Parole in Annapolis, Mr. Johns was a sergeant in World War II. He was an automobile mechanic at the Naval Academy.
He was a Mason and enjoyed fixing cars.
He was married in 1944 to Ruth V. Lane Johns, who died in 1994.
Surviving are five sons, Karl and Marcel Coates, both of California, Kevin Coates of Prince George's County, Laronja Coates of Annapolis, and Remi Coates of Baltimore; two daughters, Sylvia Hopkins of Severn and Tonya Johnson of Baltimore; one sister, Lucille Donnell of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
His brother, James W. Johns, and three sisters, Pauline Darden, Evelyn Larkins and Viola Parker predeceased him.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.tomorrow at Miller Funeral Home, 1922 Forest Drive, where a Christian wake will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Herbert Kelser
Herbert Melville Kelser, 72, of Churchton and formerly of Silver Spring, died of heart failure Oct. 29, 2000 at the Spa Creek Center, Genesis ElderCare Network.
Born in Washington, D.C., Mr. Kelser served in the Navy during World War II. He worked as a salesman selling tires and steel for various companies.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge in Silver Spring. His hobby was fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Ivy Highton Kelser; one daughter, Barbara Fleisher of Churchton; and one grandchild.
Services and burial were private and were handled by the Raymond Funeral Service of La Plata.
Michaela Kyler
Michaela Sarah Ann Kyler, 10-month-old daughter of John C. and Carol A. Kyler of Dunkirk, died Oct. 30, 2000 at her home after a long illness.
Michaela was born Dec. 16, 1999, at Anne Arundel Medical Center and loved being held by her family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by three siblings, Jay, Kent and Jenna Kyler of the home; and her grandparents, George and Lorraine Faulkner of Wye Mills and Wheatley and Marguerite Ward of Mayo.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater, where services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Southern Cemetery in Dunkirk.

Charles Rodriguez
Charles Antonio Rodriguez, son of Rannieta T. Henry of Severna Park and Felipe A. Rodriguez of Absecon, N.J., died Oct. 24, 2000 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore an hour after his birth. He was 4 months premature.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Asbury Town Neck United Methodist Church, 429 Asbury Drive, Severna Park, followed by burial in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
David White
David Eugene White Jr., 49, a native and lifelong resident of Annapolis, died Oct. 29 at Anne Arundel Medical Center of complications of liver failure after a lengthy illness.
Mr. White was born Dec. 21, 1950, and was the son of the late Evelyn White. He was formerly employed by the Pepsi Cola Co.
His interests included singing, playing the guitar and banjo, fishing, crabbing, model building and collecting trains.
Surviving are one son, David White III, and one daughter, Sherry L. Staton, both of Annapolis; five grandchildren; and his fiancee, Norma "Goutsie" Paddy of Annapolis.
He was the brother of the late William " Gary" White and Patricia White.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Hardesty Funeral Home, 12 Ridgely Ave., where services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Liver Foundation, 1425 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, NJ 07009 for liver research.
Dorothy Engle
Dorothy Spriggs Engle, 94, a resident of Annapolis for more than 50 years, died of natural causes Oct. 29, 2002 at Atria-Manresa.
Known as "Dot," Mrs. Engle was born Dec. 27, 1907, in Arnold. She graduated in 1925 from Annapolis High School and attended a business college. She worked as a secretary for BG&E in Baltimore.
At one time she received a plaque from Anne Arundel County as the "Good Samaritan of the Year." She was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Gardening, sewing, dancing, and caring for and visiting the sick in nursing homes were among her interests.
In 1942 she married Francis Engle, who died in 1983.
She was the sister of the late Franklin Spriggs and Alma Davis Taber.
Surviving are two nieces, Mary D. Jewett of Annapolis and Martha D. Lamb of Fairfax, Va.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Duke of Gloucester St., where services will follow at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, 78 Church Road, Arnold.

Robert Matthews
Funeral services for Robert Edward Matthews, 44, of Riva, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Riva Trace Baptist Church, 2990 Riva Trace Parkway.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Burial in Lakemont Memorial Park in Davidsonville will follow the service on Friday.
Mr. Matthews died Oct. 28, 2002 at Anne Arundel Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident that day on Glen Isle Road.
Born July 1, 1958, in Washington, D.C., he graduated from Northwood High School in Silver Spring and Metropolitan State College in Denver, with a degree in accounting.
He worked for the Army Corp of Engineers as a supervisory real estate specialist. He served as a civilian for 14 months in Bosnia.
Mr. Matthews was the football announcer at the South River High School Gators football games. He loved football.
Surviving are his wife, Claudia A. Matthews, whom he married in April 1982; two sons, Michael and Nicholas Matthews of Riva; his parents, Milner C. and Georgia S. Matthews of Littleton, Colo.; and one sister, Donna Matthews of Littleton.
