MATILDA W. GALE
Matilda W. Gale, 74, of Princess Anne died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born in Mount Vernon, she was a daughter of Paul Rufus and Nora Shafer Smith Holbrook.
Matilda belonged to the Usher Board of the church and the Eastern Star Busy Bees Club.
She leaves to mourn two sons, Nathan "Ace" Hayward of Salisbury and Waymond "Butch" Gale of Baltimore; two daughters, Norma Wallace of Eden and Alma White of Waterview Nursing Home; one brother, Melvin Holbrook of Philadelphia; three sisters, Norma Jones of Manokin Manor in Princess Anne, Marge Holbrook of Mount Vernon and Margaret Fountain of Fruitland; an aunt, Hattie Holbrook, and an uncle, Prosser Smith, both of Mount Vernon; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist CWC on Polks Road, where a viewing will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Charles Durand Adkins
SNOW HILL -- Charles Durand Adkins passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Charles was born April 20, 1934, in Salisbury, a son of the late John Durand Adkins and Doris Virginia Adkins. He served in the National Guard until 1956 and in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. Before becoming a driver-salesman for Tri-State Oil, Triangle Oil and Scarborough Oil Co., he was a supervisor for Campbell Soup, Buddy Boy Chicken and Showell Poultry. He was a member of Makemie Memorial Presbyterian Church in Snow Hill, where he had served as a trustee.
He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Beatrice "Bea" Cubler Adkins; four sons, John E. Adkins and his wife, Jean, of Salisbury, James R. Adkins and his wife, Jane, of Stockton, Charles A. Adkins of Ocean City and Thomas A. Adkins and his wife, Kimberly, of Milton; two brothers, William E. Adkins and his wife, Edna Mae, of Fruitland and Merrill Thomas Adkins and his wife, Edna, of Powellville; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful dogs, Benny and Taz.
A private service will be held by the immediate family.

William M. Short Jr.
DELMAR -- William M. Short Jr., 58, of Delmar died Saturday, March 30, 2002, of leukemia.
Bill was the owner and president of Short Funeral Homes Inc. in Delmar and Laurel. He was the owner and operator of Crematory of Delmarva in Delmar. He was a member of St. Stephen's United Methodist Church, having served on various committees. He was a member of the Delaware State Funeral Directors Association; the Maryland State Funeral Directors Association; the National Funeral Directors Association; the Endeavor Lodge 17 AF&AM in Milton; Delaware Consistory in Wilmington, where he received his 33rd degree; Kent and Sussex Scottish Rites; the Delmar Chamber of Commerce; and the Laurel Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Delaware Board of Funeral Service Practitioners, having been appointed by former Gov. Pierre S. duPont IV. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Bank of Delmar and the board of directors of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. He was a former member, past treasurer and past president of the Delmar Kiwanis.
He was born in Smyrna, Del. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Short.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Sarah E. Short; two daughters and sons-in-law, Holly and Ed Hannigan and Amy and Tom Jewell of Laurel; two grandsons, Ryan Matthew Hannigan and Tyler William Jewell of Laurel; his father, William M. Short Sr. of Milford; and one brother and two sisters, George Short, Bonnie Ritter and Patsy Caras, all of Milton. In addition, he is survived by several aunts, uncles nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's United Methodist Church in Delmar. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Short Funeral Home in Delmar and noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel.

Constance R. Tancill
OCEAN PINES -- Constance R. Tancill, 70, of Ocean Pines died Sunday, March 31, 2002, at Atlantic General Hospital.
She was born in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Graham H. and Lillian L. Rites. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, John Herman Tancill, who died this past July.
Survivors include her daughter, Judith Ann Tancill, of McLean, Va., and a son, Jeffrey James Tancill, and his wife, Tricia, of Merrimack, N.H. Her grandsons are Dylan, Shane and Keenan. A daughter, Kathleen Louise Tancill, died in 1965, and a son, Graham John Tancill, died in 1978.
She graduated from Brentwood High School and from Carnegie Mellon University in 1953, raised four children and had a career in office management for a commercial real estate firm in Washington, D.C.
In 1990, Connie and John retired to Ocean Pines. They volunteered with Mothers Against Drunk Driving and other organizations. She was a member of Ocean Pines Players, both acting in and directing several productions.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kensington, Md., with interment following in Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, Md.

Omar Noel Ortega
SALISBURY -- Omar Noel Ortega, 54, died at Peninsula Regional Medical Center on Saturday, April 27, 2002, of injuries from a pedestrian accident.
Born in Havana, Cuba, he was a son of Nereida de la Loza Iglesias of Miami and the late Juan Ortega.
A member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Mr. Ortega worked as a chef in New York, Florida and California before moving to Maryland. In California, he also worked in the electronics technology field.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Magna Isabel Ortega; a son, Pastor Sergio Arce and his wife Holly of Salisbury; two grandchildren, Linda and Lisa Arce; a brother, Fidel Alejandro Iglesias of Havana; a niece, Jennifer Iglesias of New York and two nephews, David and Alejandro Iglesias of New York and Georgia.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church in Salisbury, where friends may call one hour before. Pastor Sergio Arce will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Woodrow Crouse. Interment will be in Springhill Memory Gardens in Hebron.

Eleanor Boston Beldin
BERLIN -- Eleanor Boston Beldin, 83, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at her home.
Born in Berlin, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Mary Bowen Boston. Her husband, A. Swayne Beldin, preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. Beldin was a homemaker and a member of Buckinghan Presbyterian Church in Berlin.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Buckingham Presbyterian Church cemetery. The Rev. Gary Baer will officiate.

Jesse M. Phoebus Jr.
SALISBURY - Jesse M. "Buck" Phoebus Jr., 76, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at the North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie, Md.
Born in Oriole, Md., he was the son of the late Jesse M. and Lois Lawson Phoebus. His wife, Virginia Lewis Phoebus, preceded him in death in January 2000.
Mr. Phoebus was a salesman all his life. A World War II Naval veteran, he was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He was educated in Somerset County public schools.
He is survived by two sons, Douglas Phoebus and his wife Shellie Seyer of Severn, Md. and Jeffrey Phoebus and his wife Mary Lou of Powellville; five grandchildren, Jayson, Andrew, Joshua and Edward Phoebus and Kathleen Orpilla; a step-grandchild, Jennifer Seyer, and two sisters, Virginia L. Phoebus of Salisbury and Peggy Tarr of Fruitland.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Edward Dorsey will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

William C. Ruark
PRINCESS ANNE - William C. Ruark, 80, died Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born in Fairmount, he was the son of the late Garland C. and Mamie Waters Curtis Ruark. His wife, Lucille M. Ruark, preceded him in death in March 1996.
Mr. Ruark worked as a surveyor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service and was a former town manager in Princess Anne. A World War II Naval veteran, he was a member of the O.T. Beauchamp Post # 94 of the American Legion in Princess Anne and the Manokin Lodge 106 AF & AM. A 32nd degree Scottish Rite mason, he attended St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Princess Anne.
He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ruark Davidson of Princess Anne and Barbara J. Allen of Raleigh, N.C.; three grandchildren, Carole C. Campbell of Salisbury, Megan Davidson Reda and her husband Anthony of Columbia, Mo. and Douglas P. Williams of Salisbury; three great-grandchildren, Kelly and Kasey Carpenter and Ashley Campbell; four loving double cousins, Ellen Fitzgerald of Princess Anne, Jane Guest of Baltimore, Hazel Cavey of Abington, Md. and Myrtle Martin of Baltimore; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Lenkey and his wife Evelyn of Merriville, Ind. and Robert Farkas and his wife Barbara of Mesa, Ariz. and a loving friend, Aleta Ruark of Marion Station.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, where friends may call one hour before. The Rev. Donald Knapp will officiate. Interment will be in Beechwood Cemetery in Princess Anne.

Gladys V. Whitelock
SALISBURY -- Gladys Virginia Whitelock, of here, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born in Princess Anne, she was a daughter of the late Ralph W. and Anna Long Wilson. Her husband, Floyd P. Whitelock Jr., preceded her in death.
Mrs. Whitelock was a retired waitress. She previously worked for the former F.W. Woolworth's in Salisbury.
She is survived by four children, Paul Whitelock and his wife Becky of Salisbury, Judy Hornsby and her husband Roger of Parsonsburg, Richard Abbott and his wife Sandy of Parsonsburg and Pat Pusey and her husband Ken of Salisbury; nine grandchildren, Tammy Dudley, Richard, Ronnie and Allen Hornsby, Cody Whitelock, Vickie Mitchell, Laurie Bucchotz, Melissa Downs and Kenny Pusey Jr.; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Robertson and Irene Willing of Salisbury; a brother, Ralph W. Wilson Jr. of Charleston, S.C. and an aunt, Edna Stephen of Salisbury.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, where friends may call one hour before. The Rev. Ray Chamberlain will officiate. Interment will be in St. Andrews Episcopal Cemetery.

Marion Barton Mumford
SALISBURY -- Marion Barton Mumford, 80, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
Born in Salisbury, he was a son of the late Isaac Barton and Gertrude Disharoon Mumford.
Mr. Mumford was a retired worker with the Wicomico County Department of Assessments and Taxation. A 1942 graduate of Wicomico High School, he worked for the Glen L. Martin aircraft company in Baltimore before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served as a staff sergeant for three years in the South Pacific. After his discharge, he became a self-employed carpenter and spent 10 years with the DuPont Company before joining the department, where he worked for 25 years.
Mr. Mumford was a member of Cross Pointe Church of the Nazarene for 32 years and was a member of the Gideons International.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Zella Pruitt Mumford; two daughters, Barbara Mumford Culver and her husband Bruce Gordy of Salisbury, and Tammie Paige Eaton and her husband Kyle Allen of Sterling, Va.; four grandchildren, Nicole Culver LaPearl and her husband J.R. of Delmar, Melissa Paige Culver and Kamrin Alexander Eaton and Ashlee Paige Eaton; two great-grandchildren, Zachary James and Maddison Alysse LaPearl and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lt. Col. Howard F. Mumford.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Cross Pointe Church of the Nazarene, where friends may call one hour before. The Revs. Ronald G. Parker and Joel Beiler will officiate. Interment will be in Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.

Thelma Beulah Justice
SALISBURY -- Thelma Beulah Justice, 83, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 at the Salisbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was the daughter of the late Levin and Maggie Peters Holbrook.
Mrs. Justice was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church on Delaware Avenue. She also was a member of Mt. Enoch Holiness Church and a former member of St. James A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served in the second stewardess board and the floral club.
She is survived by two daughters, Tanya Justice of Turnersville, N.J. and Beryl Wynter of Salisbury; eight grandchildren, Tara and Taryn Wynter, Jamar and Jamarah Justice, Tequoia and Dominique Braxton and Eric and Erika Bundy; a great-niece and -nephew, Sheila and Stedman Bell; a very special companion, Vannessa Jones, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Salisbury, where friends may call one hour before. The Rev. Dr. John W. Kennedy will officiate. Interment will be in Springhill Memory Garden near Hebron.
