85, of Marriottsville
Edith Mae Shipley, 85, of Marriottsville, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at St. Agnes Nursing Center in Ellicott City.
Born Dec. 11, 1913, in Howard County, she was the daughter of the late Henry C. and Nettie Mullinix Sullivan. She was the wife of Russell Milton Shipley.
She was a homemaker for most of her life, and was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Marriottsville.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughters Loretta Mae Shipley of Marriottsville and Ruth Annette Fisher of Sykesville; sister Blanche Slagle of Baltimore; brother Herbert Sullivan of Glenelg; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by sister Rosalie Oland and brother Stanley Sullivan.
A funeral service was Nov. 25 at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. The Rev. Edward Voorhaar officiated. Interment was in Mt. View Cemetery, Howard County.

John J. Spenner Sr.
63, of Hanover, Md.
John Joseph Spenner Sr., 63, of Hanover, Md., died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at North Arundel Hospital, after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 19, 1935, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Robert Joseph and Catherine Elizabeth Engels Spenner. He was the husband of Leila Robinette Spenner.
He was employed in the field of aluminum fabrication, working for Liskey Aluminum from 1958 to 1987, and Bettinger West/Nello Wall Systems from 1987 to 1998, where he served as a shop leader. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union, and had served as financial secretary of District 8, Local 7070, for more than 20 years. He was a past ambulance driver with the 104th Medical Battalion of the Maryland National Guard and a scout master for the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed spending time at his second residence in Shellsburg, Pa. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and leather crafts, and worked with computers.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons and daughters-in-law John and Pam Spenner of Hampstead, Steven and Lynn Spenner of Baltimore; daughters and sons-in-law Mary and Howard Neugebauer of Pasadena, Sharon and Michael Waters of Edgewood, and Barbara and Henry Jones of Baltimore; sister Dorothy Kowalski of Baltimore; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at George J. Gonce Funeral Home, 169 Riviera Drive, Riviera Beach, with the Rev. Charles Klein officiating. Interment will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Baltimore.
Helen M. Chappell
77, formerly of Reisterstown
Helen Margaret Chappell, 77, of Tennessee, formerly of Reisterstown, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Lynchburg Nursing Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1921, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Gladys Leland Jones.
She was a retired hospital secretary.
Surviving are daughters Kathleen Powell of Tullahoma, Tenn., and Jeanne Losco of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; sister Althea Ritter of Reisterstown; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Eckhardt Funeral Chapel, 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills, with the Rev. Dave Miller officiating. Interment will be private.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

LeRoy C. Christman
70, of Westminster
LeRoy Charles Christman, 70, of Westminster, formerly of Taneytown, died Wednesday evening, Jan. 27, 1999, at Carroll County General Hospital, after an extended illness.
Born Dec. 28, 1928, he was the son of the late LeRoy Charles Christman Sr. and Ann Deihl Ware. He was the husband of Marie Lewless Christman.
Prior to his illness, he was employed as a food service director for Western Maryland College. He had previously worked at Tully's Restaurant in Westminster. He enjoyed cooking and woodworking. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons James S. Christman of Girdaville, Pa., Frances L. Christman of Iowa, and Justin C. Christman of Westminster; daughters Cynthia L. Piergallini and Jackie E. Donnelly, both of West Chester, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was predeceased by daughter Patricia Christman.
A Memorial Mass was celebrated Jan. 30 at St. John Catholic Church, Westminster, with the Rev. John V. DoBranski, as celebrant.

Mary M. Gladfelter
73, of Hanover, Pa.
Mary M. Gladfelter, 73, of Hanover, Pa., died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at the Brethren Home Nursing Center, New Oxford, Pa.
Born Oct. 28, 1925, in Glenville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Jennie Huggens Cooper. She was the wife of Charles E. Gladfelter who died July 21, 1980.
She was a member of St. Jacob's United Church of Christ, Brodbecks, Pa., Grangeville Fire Co., Pennville Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, York County Fireman's Association, Hanover Eagles Club, as well as the local and national American Association of Retired Persons.
She was a graduate of Glenville High School and Thompson Business School. She retired from Sieck Floral Products, which was formerly Cremer's of Hanover, with over 15 years of service.
Surviving are daughter Nancy C. Monath of Westminster; sons Donald L. Gladfelter of Hanover, Pa., Robert A. Gladfelter of Thomasville, Pa., Richard E. Gladfelter of Hanover, Pa., Kevin C. Gladfelter of Knoxville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
She was predeceased by sister Clarice Dubs in 1985.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, Pa., with her pastor, the Rev. George O. Butz, officiating. Interment will be in St. Jacob Stone Church Cemetery, Brodbecks, Pa.

Howard H. Gosnell Sr.
87, of Westminster
Howard Hanson Gosnell Sr., 87, of Westminster, died Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, at Carroll County General Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born March 3, 1911, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late William Edward and Olga Jane Conaway Gosnell. He was the husband of Emma Mae Smith Gosnell, his wife of 62 years.
He was a member of Westminster Church of the Brethren, where he served as a deacon and was a member of the choir and the camping group. He was a member of the Westminster Kiwanis Club, Gamber Senior Friendly Group and Coachmen Camping Group. He was formerly active in PTAs at various Carroll County schools. He was a volunteer at Carroll County General Hospital, Carroll County Farm Museum and Meals on Wheels. He was a dairy farmer for most of his working life, then was head custodian at Westminster Middle School for 12 years prior to his retirement in 1978. He was also employed part time at the Brethren Service Center, New Windsor.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughter Dorothy E. Gosnell of Westminster; sons and daughters-in-law Howard H. Jr. and Janice Gosnell of Randallstown, and Donald E. and Carol Gosnell of Columbia; foster son Harry J. Turner of Westminster; sister Rhoda Wine of Bridgewater, Va.; brothers Joseph B. Gosnell of Greenville, Ohio, Fred A. Gosnell of New Windsor, and Wilbur S. Gosnell of Glen Arm; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was predeceased by an infant son, Ralph Edward Gosnell; daughter Nancy L. Friend; sisters Esther Royer, Mary Heffelfinger and Virgie Barrows; and brothers Herman, James, Walter R. and John W. Gosnell.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Westminster Church of the Brethren with his pastor, the Rev. Scott E. Duffey and the Rev. Walt Wiltschek, associate pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Sams Creek Cemetery, New Windsor.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hartzler Funeral Home, New Windsor, and from noon until time of services Thursday at the church.

Charles R. Hubatka III
70, of Finksburg
Charles Robert Hubatka III, 70, of Finksburg, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 1, 1999, at Carroll County General Hospital after an extended illness.
Born March 16, 1928, in Elizabeth, N.J., he was the son of the late Charles Robert Jr. and Doris Althea Paley Hubatka. He was the husband of Dorothy Samuels Hubatka, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on Jan. 29, 1999.
Prior to his retirement in July 1987, he had been employed for 34 years as a senior engineer for Westinghouse in Linthicum, being licensed in both mechanical and electrical engineering. From March 1946 to September 1947, he was a corporal in the Army Air Corps, serving as a radio man in World War II. He was a member of Westminster VFW Post No. 467 and a supporting member of the Pride of Baltimore. He and his wife were foster parents to 20 pre-adoptive infants through the Maryland Children's Aid Society.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Charles Robert Hubatka IV of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Richard Thomas Hubatka of Baltimore; daughter Linda Marie Boggs of Millers; brother Allan Lee Hubatka of Carey, N.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a great-grandson.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, with the Rev. Earl E. Gray Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium.

Thelma Iola Kelly, 91, of Reisterstown, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at the Baptist Home of Maryland/Delaware.
Born May 21, 1907, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late John and Elsie Momberger. She was the wife of the late Francis E. Kelly Jr.
She was a salesperson with Singer Sewing Machine.
Surviving are son Jerry D. Kelly of Reisterstown, one niece and one granddaughter.

Myron T. `Joe' Upperco

Myron T. ``Joe'' Upperco, 78, of Westminster, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, at Look About Manor, Westminster.
Born Aug. 15, 1920, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Jesse and Mary Ruth Taylor Upperco. He was the husband of Emma Crumbacker Upperco, who died in 1992.
He graduated from Hampstead High School and was retired from the Chessie Railroad System. He also worked at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel for many years as an attendant.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and served on the LST 660 plane carrier.
He was a member of Westminster Church of the Brethren. He was a member of the former Civitan Club, was on the Board of the Meadow Branch Cemetery, was a member of Carroll Post 31 American Legion, Molesville Farm Post 467 VFW, Door to Virtue Lodge 46 A.F. and A.M., and Westminster fire department for 41 years.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law Lina and Steve Ferguson of Uniontown; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and devoted friend Barbara Lindsay of Westminster.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with his pastor, the Rev. Scott Duffey, officiating. Interment will be in Pipe Creek Cemetery, Linwood.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
