PEARL D. GARLITZ
Pearl Dorothy Garlitz, 75, Finzel, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born June 26, 1924, in Frostburg, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Nannie (Albright) Caton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ray Garlitz, in 1989; one daughter, Linda Jane Garlitz; one sister, Daisy Brode; and two brothers.
She was retired from the housekeeping department at Meyersdale (Pa.) Hospital. She formerly managed Pearl’s Place in Finzel.
She was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Finzel.
Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie K. Bittner, Meyersdale, and Kitty Ann Stakem, Finzel; two sisters, Mabel Clark, Finzel, and Nellie Fleming, Austin, Texas; one brother, Charles Caton, Finzel; and four grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Steve Lightner officiating. Interment will follow in the Emmanuel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Finzel.
LAURA MAE FLANIGAN
After witnessing the arrival the new millennium and the third century in her lifetime, Garrett County’s eldest known resident, 105-year-old Laura Mae Flanigan, died Thursday, Jan. 6, at her home in Deer Park.
Born July 19, 1894, in Deer Park, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Friend. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Emanuel B. King and Walter W. Flanigan.
Mrs. Flanigan began working at the Deer Park Inn as a young girl, driving her horse and buggy to the establishment, where she delivered flowers and vegetables. She was a former Deer Park correspondent for The Republican, a member of the Deer Park United Methodist Church, and a longtime member of the Deer Park Homemakers Club. She was also featured in a November 1998 issue of The Republican when, at 104 years of age, she exercised her 'responsibility and freedom as a citizen...and went to the polls...to cast her vote.'
Survivors include one son, Harry R. King, Deer Park; two daughters, Betty Beckman, Oakland, and Dolly Baggett, Fairfax, Va.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Sunday, Jan. 9, with the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating. Interment followed in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to Southern Garrett Rescue Squad or the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department.
EDWARD C. FINZEL
Edward C. 'Ebbie' Finzel, 87, Frostburg, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born May 11, 1912, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Ira George and Barbara Anna Finzel, who had lived in Garrett County.
A 1929 graduate of Beall High School, he was active in varsity sports. He attended Penn State University, where he received All-American status in soccer. He traveled with the Penn State soccer team to Scotland to participate in exhibition games there. He graduated from Penn State in 1934 and did graduate work at UCLA and at Columbia University, where he received his advanced degree. After having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he taught for a short time at Central High School in Lonaconing, and then moved to Beall High School, where he served as athletic director, taught physical education, and coached several varsity sports teams. He retired after 39 years of teaching. During his years of teaching, he held several offices in the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association. He served as president of the organization in 1966-67. In 1988, he was honored as one of four outstanding athletic directors in the state of Maryland. He was a founder and promoter of the JCP Soccer League. He also coached Beall High School’s tennis team until his retirement. He was a life-long member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Frostburg.
Survivors include one sister, Grace Finzel Bittner; Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg. A Requiem Eucharist was celebrated at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Monday, Jan. 10, with the Rev. Thomas Staup as celebrant. Interment was in the Finzel Cemetery.

ALLEN L. PRESTON
Allen L. 'Buddy' Preston, 70, Barton, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 8, 1929, in Barton, he was a son of the late John P. and Gladys (Moore) Preston. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Calvin Preston.
He attended the First Assembly of God Church, Westernport. He was retired from Frostburg State University with 17 years of service in the maintenance department. He was also a coal miner for 28 years.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae (Coleman) Preston; three stepchildren, James Cook, Rawlings, Robert G. Cook, Dallas, Ga., and Mary Kesner, Keyser, W.Va.; four sisters, Margaret Jenkins, Bedford, Ohio, Hazel Moore, Barton, Martha Wilt, Bittinger, and Helen Preston, Barton; and four brothers, Donald Preston, Frostburg, Dale Preston and Charles Preston, both of Barton, and Johnnie Preston, Westernport.
Friends were received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, where a service was conducted Sunday, Jan. 9, with the Rev. Jerry Schloe officiating. Interment was in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
DAVID A. LOHR
David Andrew Lohr, 45, Oakland, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at his home.
Born Dec. 2, 1954, in Cheverly, he was a son of Peter J. Lohr, and the late Pauline M. Lohr. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Nancy Louise Lohr.
He was self-employed as a builder. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hyattsville.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Laurie (Arnold) Lohr; two sons, Michael David Lohr, Beltsville, and David A. Lohr Jr., Hyattsville; two daughters, Heather Lohr and Amanda Lohr, both of Hyattsville; one brother, Roy W. Lohr, Linden, Va.; one sister, Paula A. Thorne, Bettles Field, Alaska; and one granddaughter.
His body was cremated. A memorial service was conducted at the Deep Creek Baptist Church on Dec. 12, 1999, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating.
PAUL H. FLETCHER
Paul Harvard Fletcher, 72, Mount Savage, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2000, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Aug. 7, 1927, in Lonaconing, he was a son of the late Conrad and Claire (Plummer) Fletcher. He was also preceded in death by two brothers.
He was retired from the Allegany County Board of Education, where he was employed as head custodian at Cresaptown Elementary School. He was a member of the Cresaptown Eagles Aerie 2883.
Survivors include his former wife, Joanne Ryan, with whom he resided; one daughter, Debra Suder, Bedford, Pa.; two stepchildren, Sharon Brennan and Ronald Powell, both of Mount Savage; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Haines, Bloomington, Claire Fletcher, Lonaconing, and Arvella McKenzie, Westernport; and one brother, Conrad Fletcher, Lonaconing.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, where a service was conducted Sunday, Jan. 9, with the Rev. George Harpold officiating. Private interment will be held at a later date.
DONALD E. WILLIAMS
Donald E. Williams, 88, Oakland, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born July 7, 1911, in Peora, W.Va., he was a son of the late Rev. V.F. and Lydia J. (Davisson) Williams. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bernice B. (Hibbs) Williams, on Dec. 26, 1999.
He retired as an assistant manager with the A&P Stores, Inc., having worked in Oakland, Grafton, W.Va., and numerous other stores. He was a member of the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, treasurer, and Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include one daughter, Dortha J. Haines, Kingwood, W.Va.; two sons, Lewis E. 'Gene' Williams, Fairmont, W.Va., and Donald C. Williams, Campbellsville, Ky.; one sister, Betty Williams, Huntington, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church on Sunday, Jan. 9, with the Rev. Dennis Leatherman officiating. Interment was in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
LESLIE G. GUARD SR.
Leslie Garrett Guard Sr., 77, Friendsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 14, 1922, in Confluence, Pa., he was a son of the late Dorsey and Laura (Fox) Guard.
He was a member of Mill Run Mercy Chapel and was a trustee from 1970 until the present. He was a dairy farmer and a longtime member of Garrett County Farm Bureau. He was also a past director of Farm Service Agency (ASCS) and had been a director of the Garrett County Fair Board for 20 years, currently as an honorary director.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Betty J. (Gilmore) Guard, whom he married Nov. 17, 1945; two sons, Leslie G. 'Gary' Guard Jr., and Dorsey R. Guard, both of Friendsville; two daughters, Nancy L. House, Cumberland, and Marie Guard Wiehler, Monrovia; one brother, John J. Guard, Friendsville; one sister, Jane G. Fox, Friendsville; and five grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted on Friday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m., at Mill Run Mercy Chapel, with Pastor Daymond Schmuck officiating. Interment will be in the Mill Run Cemetery.

E. DENVER GANK
E. Denver 'Bunk' Gank, 73, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Preston Memorial Hospital, Kingwood, W.Va.
Born Sept. 29, 1926, at Hutton, he was a son of Ethel Marie (Durst) Gank, Oakland, and the late Ernest Lester Gank. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Mae (Funk) Gank.
He was the owner/operator of Bunk’s Stop & Shop in Terra Alta for more than 30 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Aurora-Terra VFW Post 578, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Kingwood. He was Protestant by faith.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sons, Chuck Gank, Lorrain, Ohio, Roger Gank, Hutton, and Scott Gank, Terra Alta; two daughters, June Ervin, Deer Park, and Melinda Friend, Oakland; two sisters, Betty Lou Kahl, Eckhart, and Eileen Rethea Reedy, Prince George, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, and from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., the time of the service, on Friday, Jan. 14, with the Rev. Richard Tepper officiating. Interment will follow in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland. Graveside military rites will be accorded by members of the Preston County VFW posts.

GENEVA B. GLASS
Geneva B. Glass, 92, Addison, Pa., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
Born April 13, 1907, in Addison Township, Pa., she was a daughter of the late James and Clara (Platter) Mimna. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Troy Glass; one daughter, Gladys; and three brothers, Hubert Mimna, James Mimna, and Charles Mimna.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Addison, and a member of the WELCA.
Survivors include one son, John William Glass, Addison; two daughters, Betty Silbaugh, Addison, and Nancy Reichenbecher, Accident; two sisters, Alverta Pullin, Grantsville, Josephine Coddington, Hubbard, Ohio, and Mary Jane Ladd, Canton, Ohio; two brothers, Mark Mimna, Youngstown, Ohio, and Paul Mimna, Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Humbert Funeral Home, Confluence, Pa., from 2 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A service will be conducted at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Addison, on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. William Triebe officiating. Interment will follow in the Addison Cemetery.
