WILLIAM R. SCHROYER
William R. 'Bob' Schroyer, 67, Greenville, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at St. Vincent Hospital, Erie, Pa.
He was born Oct. 26, 1931, in Friendsville, a son of the late Clarence E. and Iva L. (VanSickle) Schroyer. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Schroyer; four brothers, Wade, Ralph, Henry, and James Schroyer; two sisters, Daisy Smith and Jean Schroyer; and four grandchildren.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Becky (McGure) Schroyer; his children, Michael Schroyer, Ohio, Terry Jo Hayes, Greenville, Tina Gault, Masury, Ohio, Iva Schroyer, stationed at the San Francisco Naval Base, and Matt Schroyer and Bobby Schroyer, both at home; one brother, John Schroyer, Union City, Pa.; four sisters, Ruth Kahl, Friendsville, Flora Hunbert, Markleysburg, Pa., Frances Fike, Andiver, Ohio, and Lavonne Gode, Dorset, Ohio.
Friends were received at the Rodney S. Turner Funeral Home Markleysburg, where a service was conducted Monday, Oct. 18, with the Rev. Joe Brown officiating. Interment was in the Blooming Rose Cemetery, near Friendsville.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to the W.R. Schroyer Memorial Fund.
WAYNE D. WHEELER III
Wayne D. Wheeler III, infant son of Wayne D. Wheeler Jr. and Carrie A. Beitzel, Oakland, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Wayne D. Wheeler Sr. and Debbie Wheeler, Harford County, and Cynthia L. and Dana Rush, Oakland; and his maternal grandmother, Beverly A. Beitzel, Oakland.
An interment service was conducted at the Oakland Cemetery on Sunday, Oct. 3, with the Rev. Robert Fletcher officiating. Interment followed.
The Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, was in charge of arrangements.
MERLE L. SMITH
Merle Laura Smith, 88, Oakland, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born April 12, 1911, in Shaffertown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William L. and Laura (Calhoun) Henline. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Smith, in 1973, and one son, Robert L. Smith.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Glotfelty, Oakland; one brother, Robert Henline, Mtn. Lake Park; and three grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted Monday, Oct. 11, at the Crellin United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating. Interment was in the Terra Alta (W.Va.) Cemetery.
ELIZABETH M. CAROLA
Elizabeth Maria Carola, 85, formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
Born Oct. 12, 1913, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Maria (Nardone) DiPalma. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph A. Carola.
Survivors include one son, Guy Carola, Oakland, and two grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Oakland, on Sunday, with the Rev. Fr. Donald Parson as celebrant.
An interment service was conducted Monday, Oct. 11, at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, Timonium.
SANDY L. HARVEY
Sandy L. Harvey, 51, Mount Zion Road, Swanton, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 1999, at her home.
Born June 13, 1948, at Mount Zion, she was a daughter of Vera (Hamilton) Duckworth and the late Guy Duckworth.
She was Catholic by faith.
She was a graduate of Southern High School and had worked for the U.S. Agriculture Department, Washington, D.C., the Deer Park Spring Water Company, and the Laurel Run Coal Company.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, Jeffrey W. Harvey, Alabama, and Douglas Harvey, San Leandro, Calif.; one brother, Donnie Duckworth, Walnut Bottom; one sister, Joyce (Sue) Everett, Swallow Falls; five grandchildren; and her maternal grandmother, Effie Tasker, a resident of the Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport.
Friends were received at the Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, W.Va., where a service was conducted earlier today, Oct. 14, with Father Jim Hannon officiating.
Interment was private.
Donations may be made to a rescue squad of the donor’s choice.
PAUL M. MURPHY
Paul M. Murphy, 92, Shelby Township, formerly of Long Stretch, Garrett County, died Sept. 2, 1999, in Shelby Township.
A memorial service was conducted Sunday, Oct. 10, at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Broome Jr. officiating. Inurnment was in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery.
CARRIE E. SHAFFER
Carrie E. Shaffer, 92, Oakland, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Oakland, on Sunday, Oct. 10, with the Rev. Michael Robinson officiating.
HELEN R. SHORT
Helen Ruth Short, 70, Salisbury, Pa., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at the Meyersdale (Pa.) Medical Center.
Born Nov. 30, 1928, in Coal Junction, Pa., she was a daughter of George Garfield Fisher, Salisbury, and the late Beatrice Marie (Bluebaugh) Fisher. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Short Sr.
She was an active member of St. Paul Wilhelm United Church of Christ, St. Paul, Pa., and was a retired CNA from the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
In addition to her father, she is survived by three sons, Charles William Short Jr., George David Short Sr., and Kenneth Alan Short, all of Salisbury; five sisters, Dorothy Eileen 'Sis' Seifert, Meyersdale, Norma Jean Meyers and Patricia Louise Pritts, both of Salisbury, Judith Maxine Gindlesperger, Jerome, Pa., and Gladys Mae Brown, Garrett, Pa.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. A service was conducted at St. Paul Wilhelm United Church of Christ on Tuesday, Oct. 12, with the Rev. Bruce Ashlock officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

MONALEA C. POTTER
Monalea (Collier) 'Monnie' Potter, 62, Ridge, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at Prince George’s Hospital Center, Cheverly.
Born Dec. 27, 1936, in Uniontown, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Glenn Scott Collier and Hazel Collier Friend.
She was a graduate of Northern High School, Cumberland Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1957, and Carloe College in 1970. She was a registered nurse. In 1991 she moved to St. Mary’s County from Charles County. She was a member of the Ladies of Charity and the National Association of Directors of Nursing.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Donovan Potter, whom she married Nov. 27, 1980; three daughters, Kimberly Young, Pittsburgh, Valerie Simpson, Waldorf, and Kathleen Burch, Hughesville; three sons, Donnie Potter, Hughesville, Joe Potter, Mechanicsville, and Kevin Potter, Cincinnati, Ohio; one sister, Iva Mae Collier, Pittsburgh; one brother, Charles Collier, Fishertown, Pa.; and 13 grandchildren.
Friends will be received at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 16566 Three Notch Road, Ridge, from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday. Prayers will be offered at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Father Karl Chimiak as celebrant. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

MIRIAM C. FRIEND
Miriam Corrine (Hoye) Friend, 86, Accident, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Feb. 16, 1913, in Sang Run, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth (Hoye) Hoye. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Everett C. Friend; two sons, Daniel Roy Friend and Nicholas Everett Friend; one brother, Baxton Hoye; one sister, Margaret Hoye; and one great-grandchild.
She was a homemaker and was Methodist by faith.
Survivors include one son, Samuel Friend, Hoyes; four daughters, Alice Filsinger, Deer Park, Betty Warren, Rockville, Esther 'Sis' Cook, Mt. Airy, and Margaret 'Peg' Quinones, Monrovia; one brother, Paul Hoye, McHenry; three sisters, Ruth Booth, Alexandria, Va., Catherine Hoye, Glen Echo, and Mary VanSickle, Accident; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, McHenry, from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A service will be conducted at the Oak Grove Church of the Brethren on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Donald Matthews officiating. Interment will be in the Hoyes United Methodist Cemetery.

ANNE N. GRANT
Anne Naylor Grant, 72, Oakland, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 25, 1927, in Oakland, she was a daughter of the late Singleton Townshend Naylor and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Naylor. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Alice B. Naylor; and one son, Townshend N. Grant.
She was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Oakland, and the Oakland Civic Club.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Bowie Linn Grant; two sons, Bowie L. Grant Jr., Granger, Ind., and William B. Grant, Oakland; one daughter, Elizabeth G. Biser, Oakland; two sisters, Mary T. Richardson and Olivia P. Mersing, both of Williamsburg, Va.; and eight grandchildren.

MARY I. CALLIS
Mary Ireta Callis, Mtn. Lake Park, died Monday, Oct. 11, 1999.
'Buck' Mosser and Nora (Specht) Mosser. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Mason W. Callis Sr., in 1994; two brothers, Dayton Mosser and Morgan 'Mike' Mosser; and two sisters, Rose Mosser and Elizabeth Foster.
She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church, Mtn. Lake Park, and the Deer Park Homemakers Club. She was actively involved in public service and community affairs, doing work for the church, 4-H, Girl Scouts, the Garrett County Agriculture Fair, and the Garrett County public schools.
She was an active member of the Southern Republican Women’s Club where she served in many offices including president. She was also actively involved with the Maryland Federation of Republican Women, and served as chairman of the Western Region. In 1979 she received the Republican of the Year award from the Garrett County Republican Central Committee.
Survivors include one son, Mason W. Callis Jr., Swanton; two daughters, Mary Ann Crone, Nokesville, Va., and Norma Lee DeVelbiss, Stephens City, Va.; one sister, Nora Ellen Larrick, Adelphi; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
