VERNON D. BOWSER
Vernon D. Bowser, 53, Grantsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his home.
Born Dec. 7, 1946, in Confluence, Pa., he was a son of the late Ralph and Virginia (McClintock) Bowser. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Junior Bowser.
He was a log cutter for 35 years for Everett McClintock.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Helen F. (Hilliard) Bowser, whom he married March 25, 1966, in the Cove; one daughter, Mary Catherine Bowser, Grantsville; three sons, Johnny Dewight Bowser, Richard Eugene Bowser, and Scott Alan Bowser, all of Grantsville; four brothers, Wilbur Bowser, McDonald, Pa., Richard Bowser, Morgan, Pa., and Walter Bowser and Max Bowser, both of Grantsville; and two grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Oren Bender officiating. Interment will follow in the Addison Cemetery.

MARY C. BURGESS
Mary Catherine Burgess, 58, New Creek, W.Va., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born March 10, 1941, in Cabin, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Edward and Hetty (Carr) Reel. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Edward Self, in August 1968; one son, Charles Edward Self; and two brothers, Branson Reel and Robert Reel.
She was a homemaker aid for Mineral County (W.Va.) Committee on Aging, and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Keyser, W.Va.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth R. Burgess; two sons, John E. Self, Warrenton, Va., and Philip Tracy Self, Culpepper, Va.; two daughters, Patricia Smith, Keyser, and Ellen K. Brown, North Wilkesboro, N.C.; one stepson, Donald R. Burgess, Mt. Storm, W.Va.; two stepdaughters, Donna Burgess, Cabin, and Sue Alt, Upper Tract, W.Va.; three brothers, William Reel, Cold Brook, N.Y., Edgar Reel, Moorefield, W.Va., and David Reel, Baker, W.Va.; two sisters, Annie Shepperd, Cold Brook, and Dorothy Sites, Moorefield; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m., with the Pres. Casey Ritz officiating. Interment will be in Burgess Creek Cemetery, New Creek.

BERNICE B. WILLIAMS
Bernice B. Williams, 88, Oakland, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Preston Memorial Hospital, Kingwood, W.Va.
Born May 21, 1911, in Cairo, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter and Sarah J. (Hupp) Hibbs.
She was an active member of the Mtn. Lake Independent Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She worked as an operator for the C&P Telephone Company, Oakland, for 20 years.
Survivors include her husband, Donald E. Williams; one daughter, Dortha J. Haines, Kingwood; two sons, Lewis E. 'Gene' Williams, Fairmont, W.Va., and Donald C. Williams, Campbellsville, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Mtn. Lake Independent Baptist Church on Wednesday, Dec. 29, with the Rev. Dennis Leatherman officiating. Interment was in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.

REGINA K. O’ROURKE
Regina Kathryn O’Rourke, 87, Suffolk, Va., died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at the Obici Hospital, Suffolk.
Born Nov. 11, 1912, in Lord, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Ida (Wilhelm) McKenzie. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph I. O’Rourke.
She was a member of St. Mary’s of the Presentation for the past nine years, and the Sodality of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lonaconing.
Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Muir, Lonaconing, and Tillie Rivenbark, Suffolk; two brothers, Gordon McKenzie, Frostburg, and Clinton McKenzie, Grantsville; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Eichorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. this evening, with Sister Marietta Culhane, OSF Pastoral Life Director of St. Mary’s Church, officiating.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s of the Annunciation Catholic Church, Lonaconing, on Friday, Dec. 31, at 9:30 a.m., with Father Paul Byrnes as celebrant. Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.

GARY L. RODEHEAVER
Gary Lynn Rodeheaver, 42, Bruceton Mills, W.Va. (Mountain Dale community), died Friday, Dec. 17, 1999, as a result of a coal mining accident at Whitetail Mine, Rt. 26, near Fellowsville, W.Va.
Born Dec. 21, 1956, in Oakland, he was a son of Clayton and Sarah (Jones) Rodeheaver, Bruceton Mills.
He was a member of the Mountain Dale Church of the Brethren.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Mary A. (Patterson) Rodeheaver; one daughter, Jennifer Lee Patterson; two brothers, Perry Rodeheaver, Friendsville, and Gerald Rodeheaver, Bruceton Mills; one sister, Sharon Pingley, Terra Alta, W.Va.; and a paternal grandmother, Ruby Rodeheaver, Bruceton Mills.
Friends were received at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home, Brandonville, W.Va., where a service was conducted Wednesday, Dec. 22, with the Rev. Eugene Matthews and the Rev. Donald Matthews officiating. Interment was in the Shady Grove Cemetery, Bruceton Mills.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to the donor’s favorite charity.

JOHN L. LEE
John L. Lee, 67, Swanton, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born April 22, 1932, in Swanton, he was a son of the late John D. and Catherine E. (Wilt) Lee. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Johnston, and one brother, Raymond Lee.
He worked on the B&O Railroad and later worked for Westvaco, where he retired as a track foreman in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Freda J. (Hinebaugh) Lee; one daughter, Robin Park, Georgia; six sons, James Lee, Georgia, John R. Lee, Swanton, Ron Lee, Georgia, Carl Lee, Swanton, Randy Lee, Swanton, and Scott Hinebaugh, Georgia; one brother, Alvin Lee, Swanton; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Dec. 21, with the Rev. Meredith Ball officiating. Interment followed in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Swanton.

BETTY K. BEACHY
Betty Kathryn Beachy, 68, Baltimore, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at Hospice of Baltimore at Gilchrist Center.
Born Aug. 25, 1931, in Grantsville, she was the daughter of Pearl (Bittinger) Brenneman, Salisbury, Pa., and the late Sherman Brenneman.
She was a self-employed genealogist and authored eight books on the subject. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the National Genealogical Society, and the historical societies in Garrett, Allegany, and Somerset (Pa.) counties. She was also the valedictorian of the Salisbury-Elk Lick High School Class of 1949.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, William V. Beachy; two daughters, Terry Lynn Smith, Hampstead, and Dr. Natalie Anne Purvis, Westminster; and two grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Saturday, Dec. 18, with the Rev. Mark Crispell officiating. Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery.

JAMES W. BAKER
James W. Baker, 74, Swanton, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born May 22, 1925, in Swanton, he was a son of the late Albert and Effie A. (Mason) Baker. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Clara Fisk.
He was a member of the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Timken Co., Canton, Ohio. During World War II he was stationed in Guam with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Luella V. (Friend) Baker; one son, Robert H. Baker, Canton; two sisters, Florence Hamill, Deer Park, and Gladys Syler, Niangua, Mo.; one brother, Daniel W. Baker, St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Otterbein United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Dec. 22, with the Rev. Meredith Ball officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Swanton.

JOSEPH J. CONNORS
Joseph Jerome Connors, 79, Grantsville, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Jan. 17, 1920, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Selder) Connors.
He was a retired photo engraver with Alcoa-Gravure, Glen Burnie. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Friendsville. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served as a seaman first class during World War II. He was also a member of Grantsville Post 214, American Legion.
Survivors include one son, Joseph R. Connors, Grantsville; one daughter, Sharon Trowbridge, Oviedo, Fla.; one sister, Margaret Williams, Baltimore; and one grandson.
Although Mr. Connors was a Grantsville resident, friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, where a service was conducted earlier today, Dec. 23, with the Rev. Galen Beitzel officiating. Interment was in the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Rocky Gap.

WILLIAM T. NELSON
William T. Nelson, 78, Oakland, formerly of Richeyville, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at the Cuppett-Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born March 6, 1921, in Wind Ridge, he was a son of the late Talbert and Pearl (Ashby) Nelson. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jane (Barnhart) Nelson, on Oct. 10, 1982; his second wife, Julia A. Nelson, who died Jan. 20, 1993; three brothers, Noel, Hugh, and Carl Nelson; and two sisters, Wilma Hewitt and Ruth Barnhart.
He was a member of the Richeyville Community Church. He was a graduate of Richhill Township High School. He was a veteran of World war II, where he served as a master sergeant tank commander in the 113th Calvary, which was involved in the invasion of Normandy. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a Silver Star.
He retired from Columbia Gas Co., with 41 years of service. He was one of the founders of Centerville Blood Bank, was active in the Boy Scouts for 20 years, and was a member of Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705, Centerville, Pa. He was also a member of Beth Center Senior Citizens.
Survivors include one son, Gregory L. Nelson, Oakland; one daughter, Beverly Mounts, Washington; one brother, Gerald Nelson, Moundsville, W.Va.; two sisters, Martha Carroll, Cross Creek, and Saundra Rutan, Prosperity; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five stepchildren.
Friends were received at the Greenlee Funeral Home, Bealtsville, where a service was conducted earlier today, Dec. 23, with Dr. Allen S. Lee officiating. Interment was in Greene County Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Pa., where full military rites were accorded by members of Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705.

ELSIE V. BOWERS
Elsie V. Bowers, 79, Oakland, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at her home.
She was born March 24, 1920, in Bayard, W.Va.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stancie E. Bowers, and two sons, Stancie Bowers and J. Rodney Bowers.
Survivors include three daughters, Roxie V. Williams, Atlantic City, N.J., and Janette L. Smith and Joan R. Bowers, both of Oakland; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 26. There will be no services. The body will be cremated and the cremains interred in the Deer Park Cemetery at a later date.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association of Maryland, Mid-Atlantic Regional Office, 2040 Linglestown Road, Suite 106, Harrisburg, PA 17110, or to the Alzheimer’s Association of Western Maryland, 1730 N. Market Street, Frederick, MD 21701.
