Rosa Payne
CAMBRIDGE - Rosa A. (Rosie) Payne, 74, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center after a short illness. She was born Oct. 15, 1928 in Madison, the daughter of the late Annie Stanley and John Pinder. She received her education in the Dorchester County School system and was employed at the Phillips Packing Co. in her earlier years.
On Oct. 22, 1946 she married Ernest V. Payne Sr. and they made their home in Church Creek. Mr. Payne preceded her in death. "Rosie" as she was called, enjoyed shopping and traveling on various bus trips. Mrs. Payne is survived by two sons, Charles E. Stanley of Church Creek and Ernest V. Payne Jr. of Cambridge; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Stanley and Evelyn Payne, both of Cambridge; nine grandchildren - LaTanya Newton of Cambridge, Yolanda Parker of Glen Burnie, Andre Stanley of Laurel, Md., Ernest Payne III, Carla, Charles Jr., Crystal, Tiffany and Nicole Stanley, all of Cambridge; four great-grandchildren; two close cousins, Naomi and Herbert Johnson and a number of other cousins. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Donald Payne. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at St. Luke UM Church with the Rev. Darlene Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in Malone Cemetery. There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. The Henry Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, is handling the arrangements.
Victor M. Horn
EASTON - Victor M. Horn, 75, died on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
He was born March 27, 1927 in Longwoods, the son of the late Willie and Alice Horn.
After attending public schools in Longwoods, he joined the Merchant Marines in 1945. After his release from duty he returned to Easton where he worked for the Telephone Company as a cable splicer. In 1955 Mr. Horn started a marine company and also worked part-time for Sinclair Oil until 1964. At that time he devoted himself full-time to his boat business, Marine Mart, until retiring in 1999. Mr. Horn is survived by his wife, the former Ruth McCarty, whom he married June 24, 1949; a daughter, Peggy Mende of Hillsboro; a son, Irvin Horn of Federalsburg; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Ann Horn on March 7, 1973. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Easton. Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 tonight.
Charles L. Wilson
GLEN BURNIE - Charles L. Wilson, passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2003. Mr. Wilson was an Eastern Shore waterman for many years. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Wilson; three sons, Kenneth W. Cheesman, James R. Wilson, Christopher R. Wilson and one daughter, Theresa Wright; four sisters; one brother and 12 grandchildren. Friends may call at the Hoffman-Skarda Funeral Home, 3218 Hudson St., Baltimore, today from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.

Marjorie B. Woodland
CAMBRIDGE - Marjorie B. Woodland, 86, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at the Dorchester General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Dryden S. Woodland. Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Daniel E. Wongus Sr.
CAMBRIDGE - Daniel Edward Wongus Sr., 85, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003 at the Mallard Bay Nursing Care
Center, where he had resided since September 1998.
He was born March 19, 1917 in Vienna, the son of the late Mitchell James and Hattie Bell Carter Wongus.
Mr. Wongus was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County. He joined the U.S. Army in October 1941 and was honorably discharged in June 1945. It was during this time he met and married his companion of 59 plus years. He wed Alamae Frances Marchbanks on March 11, 1943 and from this union, there are six children.
Mr. Wongus worked for many years for the Darco fertilizer company before going to work for R. J. Reynolds Foods. He was well known among his fellow employees for his work on the retort machine.
He was a member of Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church where for many years he was a member of the United Methodist Men and the Usher Board.
Mr. Wongus was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles.
Besides his wife, Mr. Wongus is survived by three sons, Daniel Jr. and Harold Eugene, both of Cambridge and Donald Richard (Diane) of Decatur, Ga.; three daughters, Patricia Artis (Isaac) of Greenville, N.C., Linda Schley (Mark) of Washington, D.C. and Brenda Davis (Frederick) of Cambridge. He is also survived by 13 grandchilden; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Mitchell Wongus of Cambridge; three sisters, Sarah L. Carter of Baltimore, Roberta A. Hopkins of New Jersey and Anna V. Wongus of Cambridge; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins and a special friend, James Bryan of Cambridge.
Besides his parents Mr. Wongus was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry F. and James M. Wongus; a sister, Rose P. Sterling and three special friends, Calvin Ross, Lubby Maddox and Charles Vernon Davis Sr.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Waugh Chapel UM Church with the Rev. Dr. William T. Wallace Sr. officiating. Burial will be scheduled for Monday at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shore at Beulah. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Robert W. Slacum
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Robert William Slacum, 78, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 at the Presbyterian Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Jan. 12, 1924 in Eldorado, the son of the late Raymond L. Slacum and Eva Dukes Slacum. He later lived in Federalsburg.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army Air Force. Mr. Slacum retired from Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. after 27 years. He was known as Bob by most people.
He was an active member of his church as a lay minister and also with the Men's Lutheran Laymen League, Stephen Ministry and Senior Adult Ministry.
Mr. Slacum is survived by his wife, Rowena Olivia Slacum; three children - Brenda Slacum Gordon and her husband, Gary Michael Gordon of Charlotte, Barbara Slacum Williams and her husband, Richard F. Williams of Charlotte and Robert W. Slacum Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; two granddaughters, Ginger Ann Gordon and Rhonda Gail Gordon of Charlotte and a sister, Katherine Fisher and her husband, John Carroll Fisher of Seaford, Del.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna May Slacum.
A memorial service to celebrate his life was held Jan. 13 at the Ascension Lutheran Church. The eulogy and prayer was given at the reception at the church by Naomi Stoker Phillips, Mr. Slacum's cousin.
The family requests that memorials be made to Ascension Lutheran Church, 1225 East Morehead St., Charlotte, N.C. 28202.

Jean C. J. Wongus
CAMBRIDGE - Jean Christine Jackson Wongus, 64, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 after a lengthy illness at Dorchester General Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Homer Harris and Glendola B. Jackson Williams. She received her education in the Dorchester County Public Schools and she joined Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna where she was a lifelong member and sang in the Senior Choir.
On June 15, 1974 she married Gerald J. Wongus. They were married for 28 years and made their home in Linkwood. Mrs. Wongus had one daughter, Gwendolyn C. Giles, who preceded her mother in death.
Mrs. Wongus enjoyed playing the piano, singing and cooking. She loved family gatherings and traveling.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by one stepdaughter, Cassandra Jennings (Julius) of Severna Park; four granddaughters - Shondolyn A. Dotson (Alvin), Sharel T. Camper (John), ShaKezia J. Brisco, ZsaKeyia S. Giles, all of Cambridge and one step-granddaughter, Julyn Jennings of Severna Park; one grandson, Frances Brisco III of Cambridge; one step-grandson, Julius Jennings Jr. of Severna Park; six great-grandchildren - Rodney, ShaBreya, Alvin, Rineka, JaVeon and Little Rodney, all of Cambridge. She is also survived by one sister, Doretha Green of Preston; four brothers - Sherwood Jackson (Vernice), Carroll Williams (Cora), both of Vienna, Calvin Williams (Darlene) of Baltimore and Jerome Williams (Jamecia) of East New Market; a sister-in-law, Nancy Simmons of Linkwood; one son-in-law, Phillip Giles of Cambridge and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Wesley UM Church in Vienna with the Rev. Darlene Dixon officiating. Burial will be held at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shore at Beulah.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Church. Flowers and all acts of kindness will be received at the church on Monday after 4 p.m.

Milford W. Elliott Jr.
CAMBRIDGE - Milford W. Elliott Jr., 77, passed away Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003 at the Mallard Bay Care Center. He had been in failing health since July and had been a patient at the center since Tuesday.
He was born Oct. 17, 1925 in Cambridge, the son of the late Milford W. and Mary Burton Elliott Sr.
Mr. Elliott had attended Peachblossom Elementary School and also the Hudson School. He worked as a waterman for 65 years and had been a boatbuilder, and enjoyed woodworking for many years.
On Oct. 15, 1948 he married the former Emma Horner. From 1942 until 1945, he was in the Merchant Marine.
Mr. Elliott was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Maryland Watermen's Association and the Dorchester County Watermen's Association. Mr. Elliott had been an animal lover his entire life.
His survivors include his wife of Cambridge; one daughter, Karen E. Stack and her husband, Calvin S. Stack Jr. of Cambridge; one son, Milford W. "Bunky" Elliott III and his wife, Paula Elliott of Cambridge; three grandchildren - Stephen Stack of East New Market, Kathy Jo Elliott of Salt Lake city, Utah, Christopher M. Elliott of California and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Laura R. Schultz of Cambridge, Kay Greig of Milton, Del.; two brothers, William H. Elliott and A. Davis Elliott, both of Cambridge; several nieces and nephews; two aunts, Louise Moffitt of Cambridge and Della Gullion of Salinas, Calif. and a special friend, Donald Todd.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Susie E. Robbins
CAMBRIDGE - Susie E. Robbins, 70, of Elliott, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 16. She was the wife of the late Gilbert R. Robbins.
She was born in Golden Hill on Sept. 8, 1932, the daughter of the late Edwin and Kathleen Johnson Keene. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, the late William J. Paul, as her father passed away when she was very young.
She attended public schools in South Dorchester County and married Mr. Robbins on May 17, 1951. Mr. Robbins passed away on March 30, 1996.
She was an honorary member of the Nause-Waiwash Band of Indians and made her home in Elliott with a daughter since March of 1997.
She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Fitzhugh and her husband Sewell, of Elliott; two sons, Jeff Robbins and his wife Valarie of Delmar, Del. and Edwin R. Robbins and his wife Wendy, of Hebron; four grandchildren, Joanna S. Fitzhugh, Ethan Robbins, Austin Robbins, and Renee Mattingly; two step-grandchildren, Michael S. Riley and Edward M. Gillenardo; one brother, Rufus Melvin Keene of Golden Hill; one sister, Wilna J. Simmons of Wilmington, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charlie Keene and Edwin Keene and two grandchildren, William Jefferson Robbins and Jefferson C. Robbins.
A funeral service will be conducted at St. John's United Methodist Church at Golden Hill on Tuesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Chris Pennington. Burial will follow in the adjoining churchyard.

Karen S. Anstine
SALISBURY - Karen S. Anstine, 53, of Salisbury, passed away peacefully at her home with her family at her side early Saturday morning, Jan. 18, after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Hagerstown on Oct. 12, 1949, the daughter of Elma Whitby Bennett and the late James Noel Bennett Jr. She was raised in Hagerstown, Reynoldsburg, Ohio and Long Island, N.Y.
She was a graduate of Smithtown High School of Smithtown, N.Y. and later attended Wesley College in Dover, Del. She played volleyball and enjoyed ceramics and had been a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church.
For 13 years, she was employed by Burroughs Corp. in Salisbury, later known as Standard Register as a form editor. Because of her health, she had not worked since 1989.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen H. Anstine, whom she married on May 1, 1976; one daughter, Danielle R. Anstine and her fiancé Aaron Hupke of Mardela Springs; her mother, Elma Bennett, who resides in St. Michaels; one brother, James N. Bennett III of Allen; one niece and two nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Monday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service.

Irvin S. Greene Jr.
CAMBRIDGE - Irvin S. Greene Jr., 63, passed away at his home early Monday morning, Jan. 13, 2003. He was the husband of the former Faye Turner.
He was born May 31, 1939 in Cambridge, the son of the late Irvin Smith and Ethel Frisch Greene. He was raised in Cambridge and was a 1957 graduate of Cambridge High School.
As a young man Mr. Greene worked at the Rob Roy Co. for a while and for seven years was a member of the Cambridge Police Department. He then joined the security force at what was then the Eastern Shore State Hospital.
At the age of 38, Mr. Greene began attending night school and over the next 11 years received an associate degree from Chesapeake College and bachelor and master's degrees from Salisbury State College.
For most of his working career Mr. Greene was involved in administrative tasks at ESHC and in 1997 retired from there as assistant administrator. After retirement he did some consulting work in the fields of behavioral health and juvenile services. For the past two years he had devoted much effort in volunteer work at the Oncology Center in Easton and in any way that would help cancer patients. In his own words, he "received much enjoyment out of helping people."
Mr. Greene had always been a sports enthusiast and in high school played football, baseball and basketball. He was a dedicated member of the Cambridge Jaycees and was a part of the group that formed the Maple Shade Homes.
He was a member of Cambridge Lodge 66, A.F. & A.M., Chesapeake Forest 115, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the York and Scottish Rite Bodies, Boumi Temple and Eastern Shore Shrine Club. He also enjoyed collecting and has been attending the First Baptist Church.
Mr. Greene is survived by his wife, to whom he was married on April 11, 1959; one son, Jeffrey I. Greene and his wife, Lorna of Grasonville; four grandchildren, Rachel E. Greene, Chase Greene, Tyler J. Greene and Devon Kyle Greene; one niece and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory K. Greene and a sister, Gloria Kinnamon.
A funeral service will be conducted at the First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Randall T. Blackmon. Burial will take place in Old Trinity Churchyard.
His family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 8 p.m. by officers and members of Cambridge Lodge 66, A.F. & A.M.

Linda L. Neighbors
CAMBRIDGE - Linda L. Neighbors, 56, passed away Jan. 11, 2003, at Dorchester General Hospital.
Born in Cambridge on Nov. 4, 1946, she was the daughter of the late John Lee and Mary Creighton Neighbors and granddaughter of the late Capt. Milford and Ella Creighton. She attended schools in Cambridge and Pocomoke City, graduating from Pocomoke High School in 1964. She also graduated from Goldey Beacom College.
She was the office manager at Tidewater Physical Therapy in Cambridge and worked part-time at the Dorchester County Family YMCA. She was a former member of the Cambridge Yacht Club and Quota International.
She was a friend, godmother and advocate of animal rights.
She is survived by one goddaughter, Heather Jones Lawhead and husband Kelley David Lawhead of Salisbury; one uncle, Shirley "Spunk" Crieghton and wife Mary Anne Creighton of Cambridge; three cousins, Shirley Anne Creighton of Salisbury, Mary Ellen Creighton of Cambridge and James M. Creighton of Cambridge; a devoted friend, Wanda Ruark and husband John Wayne Ruark of Cambridge; several cousins in Baltimore and several pets.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home. The Rev. Dale L. Brown will officiate. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Elsie F. Bronson
CAMBRIDGE - Elsie Frances Bronson, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, at Mallard Bay Care Center where she had been a patient one month.
Born Sept. 16, 1913 in Dorchester County, she was the daughter of the late Levin Henry and the late Elizah Bozman-Henry. She received her education in the schools of Dorchester County.
Her early employment years were spent performing domestic work for families. She spent her later years working as a food service worker for the Dorchester County Board of Education.
She was a member of Bethel AME Church for many years. She was a member of the communion stewards, Tribe of Levi, and was a Bible study participant as long as her health permitted. She enjoyed the monthly community prayer breakfast.
She is survived by six nieces, Vermon Stanley, Valerie Dean, Virginia Askins and Ava Johnson of Cambridge, Ethel Wells of Florida and Shirley Hollis of Atlanta; seven nephews, Lorenzo Henry of Arizona, David Henry of Baltimore, William Henry of Cambridge, Franklin Henry of Ithaca, N.Y.; Leon Henry of Georgia, Ronald Chase of Ithaca, N.Y., and Fleetwood Henry of Upper Marlboro; 17 great-nieces; 14 great-nephews; 12 great-great nieces; 20 great-great nephews; 11-great-great-great nieces; seven great-great-great nephews; and several cousins and friends.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Silas Bronson; three brothers, Levin Henry, Robert Henry and Edgar Henry; three sisters, Lula Gamby, Lillie Turpin and Alice Henry; three nephews, Charlie J. Henry, Gayle Henry and Roscoe Henry; and two nieces, Peggy Chase and Shirley J. Henry.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Bethel AME Church. The Rev. Leon B. Hall will officiate. Burial will follow at Waugh Cemetery.
Friends may visit 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Henry Funeral Home. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. The family will be present the last half-hour.
Louise W. Pritchett
WINGATE - Louise W. Pritchett, 88, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 at the Dorchester General Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past three months and was a patient at DGH for one month.
She was born Oct. 11, 1914 at Hooper Island, the daughter of the late Corbin and Bessie Fitzhugh Simmons. She attended schools at Hooper Island.
On Dec. 23, 1933 she was married to Sangston D. Pritchett. They had made their home in Baltimore from 1935, where Mr. Pritchett was a manger at the Owens Yacht Co., until he retired and they moved to Wingate in 1974. Mr. Pritchett passed away on Oct. 10, 1982.
Mrs. Pritchett was a former member of the Patapsco United Methodist Church in Dundalk, where she had served as a Trustee. Mrs. Pritchett was a homemaker for most of her life.
Her survivors include a son, Sangston D. "Sonny" Pritchett Jr. and his wife, Lois Pritchett of Cambridge; one grandson, Sangston D. "Del" Pritchett III of Wingate and his fiancée, Sue Thomas; two sisters, Esther Bennett of Elkridge and Frances Mueller of Millersville; one half sister, Dorothy Taylor of North Carolina; two half brothers, Corbin Simmons of North Carolina and Curtis Simmons of Hooper Island; her dog, Weezy and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Odie Simmons; two sisters, Claudie Dean and Helen Dorsey and her stepmother, Rhodessa Simmons.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Delores Knight officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service on Sunday.
