John Elzey
CAMBRIDGE - John "Happy Johnny" Elzey, 66, of Cambridge, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center on Friday night, Jan. 31, 2003.
He was born in Church Creek on June 2, 1936, the son of the late Robert Lee and Della Wroten Elzey. He was raised in Church Creek and attended public schools in Dorchester County.
For most of his life, he worked in farming and was employed by Ralph Jackson Jr. and Goldsborough James. Mr. Elzey has been at the Mallard Bay facility since June of 2001.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, the former Bonita Ball; one step-son, Scott R. Lewis of LaGrange, Ga.; two step-grandchildren, Madison Raene and Alexis Reaghan; eight sisters, Sally Crandell of Baltimore, Katie Crandell of Federalsburg, Joyce and Peggy Horseman of Madison, Ruth Lankford of Federalsburg, Lucille Barnes of Woolford, Doris Marshall of Ragged Point, and Brenda "Teeny" Willey of East New Market; three brothers, Robert L. Elzey of Cambridge, Calvin Elzey of Church Creek, and Elwood Elzey of Madison; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Carolyn Newcomb of Cambridge.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Eskridge and his step-father, Ted Walter.
A graveside service will be conducted at Dorchester Memorial Park on Wednesday at 11 a.m. by Capt. Dwayne A. Durham. Pallbearers will be members of Mr. Elzey's family. There will be no calling hours.

Lee J. Smith
FINKSBURG - Lee Jones Smith, 90, died at his home Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003.
Born Jan. 8, 1913, in Duty, Va., he was the son of the late Robert L. and Emmy Tiller Smith. He had been a maintenance worker with the Baltimore County Board of Education. He was the husband of Ollie Smith, his wife of 63 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jack R. Smith and wife Gale of Elkridge and Ronald D. Smith of Port Deposit; three daughters, Joyce A. Merryman and husband Ben of Cambridge, Brenda A. Crawford of Owings Mills and Cathy L. Brummett and husband Ray of Hanover, Pa.; one brother, Raymond L. Smith of Kingsport, Tenn.; one sister, Lola Lambert of Abingdon; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one son, Danny F. Smith; five siblings, Tollie Smith, Walker Smith, Ada Smith, Ura Saak and Dona Musick; and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Haight Funeral Home and Chapel in Sykesville. The Rev. Stephen Aquino will officiate. Burial will take place at Lake View Memorial Park in Sykesville.
Friends may call 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Roger C. Smith
HURLOCK - Roger Clark Smith, 62, died at his home Friday, Feb. 7, 2003.
Born April 5, 1940, in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Sheldon Rogerick Smith and Viola Isabelle Wheatley Smith. He was a cargo specialist for the U.S. Air Force, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired Jan. 31, 1979, after 21 years of service.
He was a member of Hurlock American Legion Post 243.
He is survived by three brothers, Victor F. Smith and Richard A. Smith of Hurlock and Kenneth W. Smith of Federalsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Beulah. Pastor Ruth Tull will officiate.

Mabel C.P. O'Neill
HURLOCK - Mabel Charest Parks "Granny" O'Neill, 86, died at her home Friday, Feb. 7, 2003.
Born Feb. 21, 1916, in Tracy's Landing, she was the daughter of the late Conley Parks and Margaret Lyles Parks. She graduated from Southern High School and continued her education at Strayer Business College. She worked as an underwriter for Nationwide Insurance Co. for more than 25 years until her retirement in 1978.
She was a past member of St. James Paris in Tracy's Landing, where she served in the ladies' group. She bowled for a number of years in the Severna Park League. Her hobbies included making ceramics, solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles and following the Baltimore Orioles.
She is survived by one daughter, Nanci Coale and husband Donald of Hurlock; two grandchildren, Ashley Coale of Hurlock and Roman Coale of East New Market; two brothers, Alfred Parks of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and William Parks of Tracy's Landing; and her caretaker, Joanie Burton of Hurlock.
She was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Parks O'Neill; four brothers, James Parks, Samuel Parks, Maurice Parks and George Parks; and six sisters, Margaret Norfolk, Charlotte Coker, Emma Hallock, Agnes Whittington, Marjorie Bell and Susan Parks.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Paris in Tracy's Landing. The Rev. William Ticknor will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Friends may call 6 to 9 tonight at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg.

Mary E. Baker
FEDERALSBURG - Mary Elizabeth Sommers Baker, 69, of Federalsburg died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
She was born Nov. 7, 1933 at Federalsburg the daughter of the late William C. Summers and Katherine Ellen Currey. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul F. Hubble and her second husband, Lynwood Baker.
She was a graduate of Federalsburg High School. She was an inspector for Allen Foods in Cordova for over 25 years. She was also previously employed at the Salisbury Mall and Tastee Freeze.
Mrs.Baker is survived by a son, Rodney Hubble of Hurlock; a brother, Billy "Bill" Summers of Laurel; a sister, Joyce Willoughby of Seaford; two grandchildren; an aunt, Hattie Lee of Federalsburg; a sister-in-law, Andy Summers of Federalsburg, and a brother-in-law, John Hitch of Seaford.
Besides her husbands she was also preceded in death by a sister, Betty Hitch, and a brother, Charles Sommers.
Funeral services for her will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg. Burial will following in Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg. Friends may call at the funeral one hour prior to the service.

Anthony Leo Blann
SEAFORD, Del. - Anthony Leo "Andy" Blann, 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003 at the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 26, 1946 in Easton, the son of the late Roland Arthur Blann Sr. and Anna Mildren Sayers Blann.
Mr. Blann enlisted in the United Sates Marine Corps, receiving the Purple Heart Medal, serving in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1971.
He had previously worked at Tidewater Building and Supply, Easton Shell for 15 years and Gede Supply. He was a member of Walter Fox American Legion Post 2 in Dover, Del. and Easton VFW Post 5118.
Mr. Blann is survived by his wife, Deborah Marie Masten Blann; six children: John Blann of Greensboro, Anthony Blann Jr. of Cambridge, Dawn Cheezum of Preston, Timothy Blann of Lebanon, Ind., Crystal Ostermann of Seaford, Del. and Dale Ostermann of Felton, Del.; 12 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Ronald Blann of Cambridge; three sisters, Barbara Wooters of Easton, Rosalie Dean of Hurlock and Rebecca Bishop of Georgetown, Del. and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Gerald Blann, Roland Blann Jr., Robert Blann and John Blann.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg with the Rev. Steven Booth officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10-11 a.m. Saturday.

Cecelia K. Stafford
EASTON - Cecelia Keene Stafford, 77, died Monday Jan. 27, 2003 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
Born Oct. 27, 1925 in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Jennings Mace and Mary Mildred Mills Keene. After graduating from Cambridge High School in 1941 she began a lifelong career as a bookkeeper, working for the Talbot County Board of Education, Noble Ford, Shannahan and Wrightson, Hallowell Chevrolet and most recently the Department of Agriculture and 1st Compute.
Her first husband, Harry F. Sullivan, died September 1973. Her second husband, Joseph Lee Stafford whom she married in 1965, died Aug. 21, 1993.
Mrs. Stafford is survived by a daughter, Nancy Maria Meyer of Newark, Del.; a son, John Dudley Sullivan and his wife, Susan of St. Michaels; two sisters, Eleanor Voshell and her husband, Lee of Marydel and Susan C. Lewis of New Castle, Del.; three brothers, Joseph R. Keene and his wife, Cookie of Silver Spring, J. Mace Keene and his wife, Margaret of Baltimore and Leo Keene of Easton; four grandchildren, Sarah Mills Sullivan of St. Michaels, Stefanie Michelle Kutas and her husband, Dr. Timothy Kutas of Germantown, Tenn., John Ernest DiRico and Katherine Angelina DiRico both of Marietta, Ga.l; two great-grandchildren, William Timothy Kutas and Walter Barrett Kutas both of Germantown, Tenn. and a son-in-law, Ernest J. DiRico of Marietta, Ga.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Jean DiRico who died Jan. 14, 1996; a brother, George Keene and a sister, Anna Jean Kelly.
A Mass For The Dead will be held 10 a.m. Feb. 15, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Easton, MD, where she was a parishioner.
Burial will be private.

Norma Lee McConnell
HURLOCK - Norma Lee McConnell, 73, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003 at the Ruxton Health Center in Denton.
She was born Sept. 19, 1929 in Dorchester County, the daughter of the late Hattie E. Shufelt Woodward and Mayo Stewart Woodward.
Mrs. McConnell was a Federalsburg High School graduate Class of 1946 and worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the former Eastern Shore State Hospital in Cambridge and Memorial Hospital at Easton. She had owned and operated the floral shop known as the Ye Old Post Shop in Preston.
Mrs. McConnell was a Preston Community Club member and a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Preston.
She is survived by her husband, Robert E. McConnell; four children, Connie Lyden Sites and her husband, Douglas, of Seaford, Del., William E. Lyden Jr. and his wife, Bonnie of Federalsburg, Suzanne Lyden Fluharty and her husband, Mickey of Federalsburg and Jill Lyden Phelps and her husband, Jim of Preston; seven grandchildren: Lori L. Colby of Hollywood, Md., Christopher Robertson of Cambridge, Wendi R. Tull, Matthew E. Guesfeird, William Noah Lyden, all of Federalsburg, Julie L. Phelps and Justin L. Phelps, both of Preston; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edith Crippen of Titusville, Fla. and Leona Henry of Seaford, Del.; one brother, Elmer Woodward of Federalsburg and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Rev. Mark Farnell officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday during the hour preceding the service.

Walter I. Warner
CAMBRIDGE - Walter I. Warner, 92, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001. He had been in failing health for the past month and had been at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge for five days.
He was born Dec. 5, 1908 at Andrews, the son of the late Wilson Sherman and Bessie L. Wroten Warner.
Mr. Warner and his family had moved to Cambridge in 1912. He graduated from Cambridge High School in 1926 and started the radio department at Nathan's Furniture Store in Cambridge in 1926. During 1929 and 1930 he worked for the Hecht Co. in Washington, D.C. in radio service. He had built several of the first radios in this area.
Mr. Warner moved back to Cambridge and was in charge of the service department of the new Sears Store when it opened in September of 1936. He worked there for the next 10 years. For the next nine years he had operated an appliance store at the corner of Gay and Poplar streets in Cambridge. He then worked selling electrical and plumbing material from Wilmington to Cape Charles. In 1964 he went to work at the Income Tax Department in Annapolis. He worked there for 14 years until he retired.
Mr. Warner had been a member of Zion United Methodist Church and in 1940 transferred his membership to St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He served several terms on the Official Board at St. Paul's.
Mr. Warner was an exempt member of Rescue Fire Company Inc. in Cambridge having been an active member for 30 years starting in 1933. He was a member of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F. & A.M.; Chesapeake Forest 115, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; and Minerva Chapter 50 O.E.S.
On Jan. 6, 1932 he and the former Mary Frances Venable were married. She passed away on April 18, 1991.
Mr. Warner is survived by two sons: Wayne S. Warner of Cambridge and Larry L. Warner of Middleway, W. Va.; three grandchildren: Scott Warner, Jennifer Doege and Donna Lynne Stratford and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters: Norma Parsons, Mildred Seward and Lucille Conway, all of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna Mae Robbins and Doris Smith.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the East New Market Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley officiating. Members of Cambridge Rescue Fire Company will participate.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge where members of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 will conduct a Memorial Service at 8 p.m.

Angel F. Bowens
FEDERALSBURG - Angel Faith Bowens, infant daughter of Melissa Lynn Mowbray and Levin Lester Bowens Jr., passed away at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Monday, Jan. 29, 2001.
She is survived by her parents, who live in Federalsburg; her maternal grandparents, Viola and Norman Mowbray of Federalsburg; maternal great-grandparents, Margaret and Julius Greenwood of Federalsburg; two paternal great-grandfathers, Robert Williams of Federalsburg and Roland Bowens of Hurlock and four uncles: Steve Greenwood of Hurlock, Norman Mowbray Jr., Keith Mowbray and Jeff Mowbray, all of Federalsburg.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the East New Market Cemetery with the Rev. Howard Dunn officiating.

Rupert R. Murphy
HURLOCK - Rupert R. Murphy, 59, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001.

Francis O. Wongus
CAMBRIDGE - Francis Orville Wongus, 56, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 at the Perry Point Veterans' Administration Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 13, 1944 in Cambridge, son of Leonia Wongus and the late Willie Wongus Sr.
Mr. Wongus attended the public schools of Dorchester County and received his high school diploma. His years of employment were at the Eastern Shore Hospital Center until his health failed. He was a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Wongus served in the U.S. Amry from 1962 to 1972, received the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged. While serving in the military he received such classifications as Specialist 4th Class, Corporal (Vietnam War), Private First Class and earned a parachutist badge.
His survivors include his mother; two sisters, Rosalee Brannock-Elsey of Cambridge, Sharon Burris of Trappe; three brothers, Willie Wongus Jr. and Forney Wongus, both of Cambridge and Dwayne Young of Florida; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held noon Friday at the Henry Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.
There will be a viewing 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Forrest Russell Sr.
HURLOCK - Forrest Russell Sr., 89, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 at The Memorial Hospital at Easton.
He was a lifelong member of Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church in Preston where he served in many capacities until he became ill.
Mr. Russell is survived by two sons, four daughters and their spouses: Forrest Jr. and Jeanette Russell, Mildred and Jimmy Magee, Jeanette Gould, Lucretia and Eddie Sampson, Rebecca and Randy Montgomery; Irvin and Sandra Russell; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held noon Saturday at Mt. Calvary United Methodist Church in Preston. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Preston.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.
