Omro W. Powley
CRAPO - Omro W. Powley, 77, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001. He had been in failing health for the past year.
Mr. Powley was born March 3, 1923 at Wingate, the son of the late Risdon and Bertha Pritchett Powley.
He had attended schools at Wingate. For a number of years he had worked at Powley's Seafood in Wingate.
On Nov. 8, 1980 he was married to the former Nettie Jones.
In addition to his wife of Crapo, Mr. Powley is survived by one daughter, Wanda Elzey of Cambridge; two grandchildren, Kim Elzey and David Elzey, both of Cambridge; one brother, Ray Powley of Cambridge and two nephews, Michael Edgar and Sean Edgar.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Powley and a brother, Bobby Powley.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Dorchester Memorial Park with the Rev. Robert Martin officiating.
There will be no viewing.
Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
Powley Addendum

Jessie L. Miller
MADISON - Jessie L. Miller, 97, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge. She had been in failing health for the past two years.
Mrs. Miller was born March 21, 1903 in Laurel, Md., the daughter of the late Walter and Amanda Green Landon.
On Sept. 3, 1924 she married Lee D. Miller and they resided in Laurel until 1986 when they moved to Madison in the Woolford area. Mr. Miller passed away March 21, 1989.
Surviving Mrs. Miller are five generations including four sons: Andrew Miller of High Ridge, Lee Miller Jr. of Glenelg, Ernest Miller of Madison, Jerry Miller of Post Falls, Idaho; a daughter, Joan Johnson of Conway, S.C.; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Barnes of Laurel.
A funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbet Ave., Laurel, Md. Burial will follow in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Laurel.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Sherry Willey, Dennis Miller, Keith Miller, Patricia Christensen, Stanley Miller and Walter McMillan.

Bertha M. Smith-Stanley
FORT WASHINGTON - Bertha M. Smith-Stanley, 78, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2001 at the Fort Washington Hospital.
She was born Aug. 3, 1922 in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of the late Bessie J. Carter and Charles Smith.
Mrs. Stanley was an active member of Zion Baptist Church in Cambridge, where she sang as a member of the Senior Choir for many years.
She was employed and retired from Coldwater Seafood Co. after 25 years of service.
Mrs. Stanley's survivors include five sons: Michael Stanley Sr., George Stanley, Eddie Stanley, Avery Stanley, all of Columbus, Ohio, James Stanley Jr. of Glen Burnie; two daughters: Sandra Manokey and Terry Stanley, both of Temple Hills; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Preceding her in death were her husband, James Stanley Sr. and a son, Norman Stanley.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Zion Baptist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. William Hitchens officiating. Burial will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.
There will be a viewing 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the church. The family will receive friends at 8 p.m.
The Henry Funeral Home is handling all funeral arrangements.
Rupert R. Murphy Jr.
HURLOCK - Rupert R. Murphy Jr., 59, passed away at his home Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001. He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born Jan. 22, 1942 in Cambridge, the son of Rupert E. Murphy Sr. and the late Louise Brohawn Murphy.
Mr. Murphy had attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High School in 1960. On Aug. 15, 1959 he and the former Frances Dyott were married.
He had worked for the DuPont Co. in Seaford for 30 years and had retired in 1992. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Hurlock and had enjoyed hunting and trap shooting.
Besides his wife and father, Mr. Murphy is survived by two daughters, Wendy M. Gauen of Smyrna, Del., and Michelle R. O'Bier of Bridgeville, Del.; and two grandchildren, Crystal L. Gauen and Corey A. O'Bier.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. Burial will follow at Unity-Washington Cemetery near Hurlock.
The family will receive friends on Saturday during the hour preceding the service.

Betty E. Laurence
CAMBRIDGE - Betty E. Laurence, 76, of High Street, died at her home, Saturday evening, Jan. 27, 2001.
She was born Sept. 15, 1924, the daughter of the late William M. Bradley Sr. and Wilsie Earl Bradley.
For most of her working life she was a caregiver. Her hobby was fishing at Long Wharf in Cambridge.
Mrs. Laurence was the sister of Geraldine B. Price of Moorestown, N.J. and William M. Bradley Jr. of Fort Collins, Colo.
There will be no viewing. Cremation followed her death and inurnment will be held privately.
Arrangements were handled by the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Anna D. Harper
CHESTERTOWN - Anna D. Harper, 84, formerly of Federalsburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001 at the Kent/ Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown.
She was born May 7, 1916 in the Friendship area of Caroline County, daughter of the late Carl Ross and Nellie Vickers Dean.
She graduated from Federalsburg High School with the class of 1933 and worked at Excelerior Pearl.
She and her husband, Charles F. Harper, moved to Baltimore at the beginning of World War II and she worked at Bentix Corp. for 17 years. After she and her husband retired they returned to Federalsburg in 1973. Mr. Harper passed away Oct. 9, 1988.
Mrs. Harper is survived by one son, Donald F. Harper of Chestertown; one daughter, Ann Barrenger of Abingdon; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and one brother, Kenneth Dean of Federalsburg.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Dean Jr. and Vernon Dean.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Federalsburg with Earl Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery.
The Williamson Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Alice M. Myers
CAMBRIDGE - Alice M. Myers, 85, passed away Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001 at the Dorchester General Hospital.
Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home.
Peter M. Howard
EASTON - Peter M. Howard, 39, died at his home in Easton on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2000.
Born in Easton on Nov. 9, 1961, he was the son of Like V. Howard Sr. and Ann Hubbard Howard of Royal Oak. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul School and graduated from St. Michaels High School in 1979. He attended St. Mary's College.
Mr. Howard worked in the restaurant trade, as a postal employee and a butcher in the Village Shoppe in St. Michaels. At the time of his death, he was employed at Heartfields in Easton.
A lifelong resident of Talbot County, he was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton. His special interests included art, volleyball, fishing and crabbing.
Survivors in addition to his parents, are three sisters, Annette Mitchell of St. Michaels, Diana H. Johnson of Royal Oak and Angela M. Pugh of Easton; two brothers, Luke V. Howard Jr. and Joseph R. Howard, both of Easton; and his maternal grandfather, Sherwood M. Hubbard of Easton.
A funeral liturgy for Peter Martin Howard of Easton will be celebrated at St. Michaels Catholic Chapel in St. Michaels on Saturday at 10 a.m. Burial will be private.
Friends may call on the family today from 7-9 p.m. at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Easton. A vigil for the deceased will be held at 8:45 p.m.
Memorial donations in Mr. Howard's memory may be made to Sts. Peter and Paul School, 900 High St., Easton, MD, 21601 or to a favorite charity.
Maurice D. Rimpo
CAMBRIDGE - Maurice D. Rimpo, 82, retired editor of The Daily Banner, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001.
He was born July 9, 1918 at Greenport, N.Y., the son of the late the Rev. Edward W. and Lois A. Wanzer Rimpo.
Mr. Rimpo was educated in the public schools in New Jersey and graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he was eleced to Phi Beta Kappa. He did graduate work at Brown University.
He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and served as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Signal Corps in Europe.
Before joining The Daily Banner staff in 1952, he taught English at a private school in Sante Fe, N.M., then was on the editorial staff at the Duke University Press in Durham, N.C.
Mr. Rimpo was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge; a charter member and former president of the Dorchester County Historical Society and was a member of the Dorchester Arts Center, the Friends of Blackwater, Cambridge Yacht Club and the Friends of the Dorchester County Public Library.
He was first married to the former Betty Jane Noren, who passed away on June 12, 1982.
Mr. Rimpo is survived by his wife, Bonnie Rimpo of Cambridge; two sons, Charles R. Rimpo of Dayton and E. Timothy Rimpo of Orangeville, Calif.; one grandson; two granddaughters and two brothers.
In addition to his first wife he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Mark Rimpo.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's UM Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Alfred E. Taylor officiating.

Edith K. Whaples
CAMBRIDGE - Edith K. Whaples, 83, passed away at the Corsica Hills Center in Centreville on Friday, Feb. 3, 2001. She had been in failing health since October and had been a resident at the center since Dec. 12.
She was born June 29, 1917 near Cambridge at Hills Point, the daughter of the late Owen Meredith and Hattie Julia Groll Seward.
Mrs. Whaples had attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High School in 1934. She was first married to Henry Clayton Wilson in 1935. She was later married to Frank J. Henry in 1948. He passed away in 1959. She was later married to Lester E. Whaples on May 11. 1963. He passed away on March 12, 1982.
Some years ago she had worked at Carton's in Cambridge and also at Mary Ewell's Town and Country Clothes. Most of her working career had been with her sister and brother-in-law at Edgar's Men & Boy's Clothing in Cambridge.
Mrs. Whaples was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Henry Theodore and Barbara S. Wilson of Town Point; one sister, Ruth A. Edgar of North Wales, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Rose K. Seward of Cambridge; several nieces, nephews and several stepchildren.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Hurley and a brother, Oscar E. Seward.
A graveside service will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Episopcal Churchyard in Cambridge with the Rev. Nathaniel W. Pierce officiating. There will be no viewing.

Rupert E. Murphy Sr.
CAMBRIDGE - Rupert E. "Dinky" Murphy Sr., 83, passed away Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001 at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge after a lengthy illness. He had been in failing health for several years.
He was born June 25, 1917 at Toddville, son of the late Thomas Edward and Bertha Olive Jones Murphy.
He had attended schools at Toddville and also in Cambridge. During World War II he had served in the U.S. Army as a field scout serving in Africa, Italy and Germany.
Mr. Murphy had worked at the Dupont Co. in Seaford for 32 years until he retired. On Oct. 10, 1940 he and the former Louise Brohawn were married. She passed away on Jan. 5, 1981.
Mr. Murphy was a Past Commander of Choptank Memorial Post 7460, VFW; a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion and Cambridge Lodge No. 1211 Loyal Order of Moose.
He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Frances E. Murphy of Hurlock; two granddaughters, Wendy M. Gauen of Smyrna, Del., and Michelle R. O'Bier of Bridgeville, Del.; two great-grandchildren, Crystal L. Gauen and Corey A. O'Bier; one sister, Blondy Barnes of Cambridge; one brother, Creden Murphy of Wilmington, Del. and a special friend, Irene Taylor of Maple Dam Road.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Rupert R. Murphy Jr. and a brother, Clifford Murphy.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. A. Delmer Willey officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery near Hurlock.
