Magdalene Briggs
FEDERALSBURG - Magdalene Rose Briggs, formerly of Federalsburg died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was 86.
She was born Jan. 25, 1917 in Federalsburg, the daughter of the late John Henry Johnson and Mary Jane Robinson Johnson. Her husband, Olin Nathaniel Briggs, preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Lockerman High School and had been employed by E.I. DuPont in Seaford, Del., the former John N. Wright Canning Co., the former Caroline Poultry and former Glessner's Restaurant.
She is survived by six children, William Percell Briggs of Seaford, Beatrice Frances Murphy of Dorchester, Mass., Hazel Marie Cornish of Cambridge, Olin Wesley Briggs of Federalsburg, Eva Evon Briggs of Cambridge, and Gordon Jerome Briggs of Laurel, Md.; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Simms of Federalsburg; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two children, Mary Alverta Allen and Kirby Russell Briggs; and two sisters, Iola Littlejohn and Mildred Palmer.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg, with the Rev. William Briggs officiating. Burial will follow in Federal Hill Cemetery in Federalsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
Serena H. Owens
CAMBRIDGE - Serena H. Owens, wife of the late Elisha H. Owens, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 17 at the Chesapeake Woods Center. She was 91.

Virginia B. Messick
CAMBRIDGE - Virginia B. Messick, 88, of Cambridge, passed away at Dorchester General Hospital on Sunday morning, Feb. 16, 2003. She was the wife of the late Emmett Messick and was admitted to the hospital on Saturday night.
She was born near Cambridge on Feb. 1, 1915, the daughter of the late William G. and Artelia Lawson Foxwell. She was raised and attended public schools here.
She married Mr. Messick on Oct. 21, 1932. She had worked as a saleslady at Leggett's Department Store in Cambridge for 20 years.
Mrs. Messick was a member of Grace U.M. Church, the Homemakers, and the A.A.R.P. Mr. Messick passed away on April 12, 1994.
She is survived by one sister, Ruth Smith of Cambridge, with whom she made her home; one niece, Rickie Bradshaw of Salisbury; one nephew, Richard Messick of Cambridge; and two special friends, Mary and Mike Jackson of East New Market.
A funeral service will he conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. A. Delmer Willey Jr. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 10:30-11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Wallace S. Brooks Jr.
COCKEYSVILLE - Wallace S. Brooks Jr., 61, of Cockeysville, passed away at his home suddenly on Saturday evening, Feb. 15. He was born in Cambridge on June 5, 1941, the son of Lovenia Raymond Brooks and the late Wallace Street Brooks.
He was raised in Cambridge and was a 1959 graduate of Cambridge High School. Upon graduation from high school, he worked at Nathan's Furniture Store and the Eastern Shore State Hospital for a short while. In 1963, he moved to Baltimore and served an apprenticeship as a funeral director and embalmer at the William J. Tickner Funeral Home.
He then attended the Cincinnati College of Embalming, graduating in 1965. He was currently employed at the Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center in Timonium and had previously worked for Ruck Towson, the Brooks Funeral Home.
He attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge.
For many years, he was a NASCAR enthusiast and regularly attended races in all parts of the country. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. in Towson and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his mother, who resides in Cambridge; two sisters, Lena Wallis Fitzhugh and her husband James, and Donna Engle and her husband Andy, all of Cambridge; one aunt, Eunice Miller of Cambridge; three uncles, J. Robert Brooks, Charles C. Brooks, and James P. Raymond, all of Cambridge; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Friday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Dale L. Brown. Burial will take place in Green Lawn Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service.
Pallbearers will be Kirk Engle, Mark Engle, James W. Fitzhugh, Chuck Kelly, Robert T. Randall and James P. Raymond.

Milford C. Lewis
BUCKTOWN - Milford C. Lewis, 88, passed away Sunday night, Feb. 18, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital. He had been in failing health for the past two years.
He was born June 13, 1912 near Vienna, the son of the late Fred E. and Nellie Condon Lewis. He was raised and attended the public schools in Dorchester County.
Mr. Lewis was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 through 1945. A portion of his time in the Navy was spent aboard a supply ship in the Pacific area. He was well known as a farmer in the Bucktown area for many years.
On Nov. 19, 1967 he married the former Erma Moore Kelley.
He was formerly a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion, Choptank Post 7460 VFW and the Cambridge Elks Lodge.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Lewis, is survived by two stepdaughters, Ruth Anne Dobson of Wilmington, Del., Mary E. Balbi of York, S.C.; one stepson, Paul B. Kelley of Wilmington; seven stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Hawkins of Raleigh, N.C.; one niece and four nephews.
Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald Lewis, Norman Lewis and Ralph Lewis.
A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the Rev. Shirley A. Evans. Burial will take place in the Bucktown Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home 7:30 to 9 tonight.

Norma J. Eberspacher
CAMBRIDGE - Norma J. Eberspacher, 68 of Drawbridge Road, passed away Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001 at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. She had been in failing health for the past year and had been a patient at the hospital since Wednesday.
She was born May 6, 1932 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Milford and Mary Condon Johnson.
Mrs. Eberspacher had attended schools in Cambridge. She had worked for the State of Maryland Unemployment Division for 20 years, until she retired in 1994.
On Dec. 15, 1950 she was married to Emerson W. Eberspacher. She had been a homemaker and devoted mother.
Mrs. Eberspacher was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Cathy E. Winslow and David K. Winslow Jr. of Salisbury, Karen E. Bounds and Kenneth E. Bounds of Laurel, Del.; one son and his wife, Emerson W. "Rusty" Eberspacher Jr. and Lisa T. Eberspacher of Salem; six grandchildren: Stephen D. Winslow, Kara E. Winslow, Christopher J. Bounds, Joshua A. Bounds, Todd E. Eberspacher and Carly E. Eberspacher and one great-grandchild, Nicholas A. Bounds. She is also survived by three sisters: Sarah Frase of Preston, Kathryn Barnes of Milford, Del., Margaret Ann McKenrick of East New Market; two brothers, Jacob A. Johnson of Mardela and Thomas Benjamin "Benny" Johnson of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: William Francis Johnson and Robert S. Johnson.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Shirley A. Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary E. Trotter
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Mary E. Trotter passed away Feb. 14, 2001 at the MaryView Hospital.
She was the mother of Maurice Trotter; mother-in-law of Delores Demby Trotter and mother of Hilton Trotter, all of Cambridge. She was grandmother of ShaTonka Pinder and great-grandmother of LaKeria Ennals of Cambridge.
Funeral services were held Feb. 17 at the Little Grove Baptist Church in Portsmouth.
E. Peter Wright
CAMBRIDGE - E. Peter Wright, 72, passed away Monday, Feb. 19, 2001 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Katie M. Brerewood
CAMBRIDGE - Grace Katherine (Katie) M. Brerewood, 96, died Monday morning, Feb. 12, 2001 at the Dorchester General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 20, 1904 at Griffiths Neck, near Vienna, the daughter of the late J. Holiday Murphy and Dora Delaha Murphy.
In 1925 she married Warren M. Brerewood. He died in January of 1954.
For many years Mrs. Brerewood worked for Granville S. LeCompte of LeCompte Funeral Home, where she resided many years. She had also worked with Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home.
For over 70 years she worked in the stationary and office supply industry for Hoge & Holder, Lucas & Fowler and Cambridge Office Supply. She had worked for the past 15 years with Barbara and Bobby Lipe of Dorchester Office Supply Co., Inc. right up to the time of her illness in December.
"Miss Katie," as she was known in the community, was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for many years. She sang in the choir and was active in the various women's groups within the church.
Miss Katie was interested in local politics and supported the Dorchester County Republican Central Committee.
She enjoyed playing cards with her weekly card group and was a member of Dorchester Unit 91 American Legion Auxiliary where she was chairman of the Gold Star Mother Program. She was an avid baseball fan from Little League to the Baltimore Orioles.
Miss Katie was featured in the Senior Profile Section of The Daily Banner. This section salutes seniors in the area who are active in their work and/or community.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Theda Warren and J. Lynn Stubbs of Cambridge; three grandchildren, Warren Lynn Stubbs of Cambridge, Amy S. Keene-Applegarth and her husband, Christopher of Madison, Matthew Lee Stubbs and his wife, Donna C. of Cambridge; special friends, Mary and Bill Leonard; five great-grandchildren, Katie and Steven Stubbs, Danny and Greg Leonard and Christopher Applegarth Jr. and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Douglas Ridley, assisted by the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Matthew L. Stubbs, Christopher Applegarth Sr., Bill Leonard, Bobby Lipe, Russ Hibble and Bill Smith.
The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made by sending flowers or making memorial offerings in Miss Katie's memory to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race St., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Roland W. Cephas
FEDERALSBURG - Roland William Cephas, 75, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001 at Shore Nursing Home in Denton.
He was born June 10, 1925 in Hurlock, the son of the late Roland Washington Cephas and Mary Frances Hubbard Cephas.
During his life he worked as a truck driver, including 27 years of service to National Freight Inc., a Van Driver for U-Star and James Julian Construction in Wilmington.
He was a member of Park Lane Church of God in Federalsburg.
Mr. Cephas is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jeanette Todd Cephas of Federalsburg; a daughter, Joan Bataille of Federalsburg; two grandsons, Clayton Baynard Jr. and Eugene Baynard; one great-grandson, Clayton Baynard III; three brothers, James Cephas and Leroy Cephas, both of Federalsburg and Solomon Cephas of Hurlock; five sisters, Pauline Camper of Philadelphia, Mabel Obey of New York, N.Y., Lottie Camper of Federalsburg, Anna Thomas of Federalsburg and Mildred Waters of Hurlock and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Hubbard Cephas.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Park Lane Church of God in Federalsburg with the Rev. Dennis Foster officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Feb. 20 at the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery in Beulah.
Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the service Saturday.

Henry Perry
GRASONVILLE - Henry "Ray" Perry, 68, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
He was born March 8, 1932 in Savannah, Ga., son of the late Crosby and Lula Pitts Perry.
Mr. Perry received his education in the Chatham County school system. In 1945, he left Georgia and made Maryland his home.
He served in the U.S. Army, and received an honorable discharge in 1960.
On Dec. 24, 1953, he married Beulah Mae Cook. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Perry's employment included truck driving, carpentry, watermen and the seafood industry.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards with family and friends and his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by two daughters, Letitia Mothon of Grasonville and Leola Cornish of Carmichael; a godson, William Teon "Snooks" Brown of Madison, Wis.; six grandchildren: Aaron, Andre', Danta, Jermaine, Kaneka and Lesa and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Lilla Mae Roberts and Marie Perry, both of Savannah, Ga.; a sister-in-law, Amy Cook of Grasonville; two sons-in-law, Ronald Cornish and Mel Mothon and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives; a special nephew, Harold P. Roberts Sr. of Portsmouth, Va. and a special friend, Blenda Abner.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryan's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joshua LaBelo officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing 7-9 p.m. Friday at the church. The family will receive friends during the last hour.

John Elmer Dyes Sr.
HURLOCK - John Elmer Dyes Sr., 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born May 20, 1925 on Cabin Creek Road in East New Market, the son of the late John William Dyes and Jenny Wheatley Dyes.
Mr. Dyes had been a mechanic since the age of 16. He entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and while stationed in Paris, he received additional mechanical training. After his discharge, he returned to Dorchester County and worked for several local auto repair shops. Mr. Dyes retired in 1994 from Preston Ford.
He was an avid gardener and a fan of WWWF Wrestling and NASCAR.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in East New Market.
Mr. Dyes is survived by his wife, Helen Ellen Dyes, whom he married on April 10, 1948; three sons, John Elmer Dyes Jr. of Hurlock, James H. Dyes Sr. of Hurlock, Charles W. Dyes of East New Market; one daughter, Diana Horseman of Hurlock. He is also survived by seven grandchilden: James H. Dyes Jr., Crystal L. Dyes, Elizabeth Short, John W. Dyes, Sierra Horseman, Jenny Toomey, Michael K. Dyes; six great-grandchildren: Chelsea Dyes, Kelsey Boyles, James H. "DJ" Dyes III, Kate Dyes, McKenzie Toomey, Gage Dyes and one brother, Percy Dyes of Kent Island.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Zoe R. Dyes and on brother, Leroy Dyes.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market with the Rev. Levin "Buddy" Spear officiating. Burial will follow in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Beulah.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be James Turpin, Jeff Fletcher, Jeff Chambers, John W. Dyes, James H. Dyes Jr. and Michael Dyes.
