Edwin A. Murphy

CAMBRIDGE - Edwin A. Murphy, 89, of Vienna, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at the Glasgow Nursing Home in Cambridge.

Mr. Murphy was born April 11, 1911 in Vienna, the son of the late James Murphy and Angenora Layton Murphy.

A graduate of Vienna High School, Mr. Murphy served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He held the rank of sergeant major and received the Bronze Star with Combat Service Device. He was stationed in Europe, were he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Returning home after the war, he attended and graduated from Goldey Beacom College. On March 29, 1947, he married Margaret L. Horn.

He worked for County Trust Company in Vienna and later for Dresser Industries in Salisbury for over 25 years, retiring in 1976.

Mr. Murphy was a lifelong member of Vienna United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving charter member of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Company, in which he had held membership form 1935 to the present, serving on the Board of Trustees at the time of his death.

During the years of his membership, he served as president, secretary/treasurer and on various committees. He is past vice president of the Dorchester County Volunteer Firemen's Association and was inducted into the Delmarva Firemen's Hall of Fame and the Eastern Shore Firemen's Hall of Fame.

In 1998, he received a citation from the State of Maryland for his many years of commitment to the Vienna Volunteer Fire Company. In 1991, after a new firehouse was built, the former fire house was dedicated in his honor as the Edwin A. Murphy Community Center.

He was also a member of the United Auto Workers' Union.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise Murphy, who died on Feb. 9, 2000; one brother, Cornelius V. Murphy and one sister, Jerusha Murphy Richardson.

He is survived by a sister-in-law, Ann Murphy of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; two nieces, Angenora Murphy and Patricia Murphy, both of Winnipeg; two nephews, James Richardson of Upper Marlboro and Rex Richardson of Mount Airy; several extended family members; Bunky and Brenda Bell; Lori, Dwaine and Taylor Bradley, all of Vienna; several great-nieces and great-nephews and several close and very special friends.

Funeral services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Vienna United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be at St. Paul's Cemetery in Vienna.

Pallbearers will be Charles J. "Bunky" Bell, Dwaine J. Bradley, Moody Gray, David Owens, William E. Short Jr. and Alfred "Junior" Travers. Honorary pallbearers will be Winfield Bell, Granville Hurst, Reginald L. Sellers Sr. and Robert "Bobby" Spear.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vienna United Methodist Church c/o Anne Hurst, P.O. Box 213, Vienna, MD, 21869, or to the Vienna Volunteer Fire Company, c/o Lori Bradley, P.O. Box 5, Vienna, MD, 21869.

David White

TRAPPE - David (Steve) White, 77, died Thursday, March 8, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton after four months of a confining illness.

He was born July 31, 1923 in Talbot County, son of the late Mildred Purnell Brown and Clark Trippe.

On Oct. 23, 1946, he was married to Eva Elizabeth Skinner and they had been married 54 years.

Steve, as he was known by his family and friends, attended Scott's United Methodist Church. He owned and operated, along with his wife, Steve's Service Station in Williamsburg for over 30 years.

Mr. White enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1945, serving as a World War II Veteran.

Besides his wife, Mr. White, is survived by a daughter, Chiquita Warner of Trappe; a stepdaughter, Anna Skinner of Cambridge; four grandchildren, Desiree Skinner and Monica Warner, both of Cambridge, Wilisha Warner of Easton, Steven Warner of Trappe; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Martina Roberts and Nancy Jenkins, both of Easton, Ellen Trippe of Columbia; three brothers, the Rev. Robert Brown of Chester, Donald Brown and James Brown, both of Trappe; two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law and a special family member, treated as a son, James "Buddy" Scott Jr.

He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Catherine (Feedee) Thompson.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Scott's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Joseph W. Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the Paradise Cemetery.

There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service.

The Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge is handling the arrangements.

William Major

HURLOCK - William (Billy) Major, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001 at the Dorchester General Hospital.

Mr. Major was the husband of Marguerite Montgomery Major and the father of Diane Brown of Baltimore, Darlene Kane Johnson of Anaheim, Calif., Bonnie Kane Sharp of Mitchellville and Antoinette Major of Hurlock.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Henry Funeral Home of Cambridge.

Mildred H. W. Bullock

FEDERALSBURG - Mildred Harriet Williams Bullock, 82, died Thursday, March 13, 2003 at her home.

She was born Sept. 9, 1920 in Federalsburg, the daughter of the late Gardner T. and Maude E. Trice Williams. She grew up on a farm on Chipman's Lane in Federalsburg. Her husband, M. Laverne Bullock, preceded her in death on June 22, 1987.

Mrs. Bullock was a Federalsburg High School graduate, class of 1937. She was a homemaker and had worked at the Button Factory, Sewing Factory, Bell's Cut Rate, Richardson's Jewelry Store and for the Caroline County Board of Education.

Mrs. Bullock had been an active 4-H leader, a member of Christ United Methodist Church and a past member of the Christian Endeavor.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane and her husband, L. Marvin Towers of Federalsburg; two grandchildren, Terri and her husband, Steve A. Blanchfield, and Jeff and his wife, Jane H. Towers, all of Federalsburg; three great-grandchildren, Ryan A. Blanchfield, Jenna R. Towers and Jacob M. Towers, all of Federalsburg and a niece, Joyce W. Fluharty of Federalsburg.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers. Edward C. Williams and Donald T. Williams.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Rev. Dan Walker officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery in Federalsburg. Friends called during the hour preceding the service.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Chestnut Grove Church Community Association, c/o Peggy Culhane, 5170 Long Swamp Road, Federalsburg or to the Caroline Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 362, Denton, MD 21629.

Grace S. Dryden

CAMBRIDGE - Grace S. Dryden, 90, died Saturday, March 15, at the Dorchester General Hospital.

She was born December 29, 1912, in Huntley, Nebraska, the daughter of the late Willie and Kate Hoffman Smith. At the age of six, her family moved to Somerset County where she was raised and attended public schools, graduating from Washington High School in Princess Anne. She later received nursing training in New York City. She also worked as a seamstress in several garment factories in Salisbury and Princess Anne.

She was married to Vernon N. Dryden on October 20, 1937. Mr. Dryden died December 31, 1976. Since 1998, she has made her home in Cambridge.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Auxiliary of the American Legion, the A.A.R.P., and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. She enjoyed gardening, bridge, teaching Sunday School, and sewing.

Survivors include one daughter, Verna D. Asplen; a grandaughter, Carol Masden; her husband, Mark; a grandson, Paul Asplen and his wife Marianne; a great granddaughter, Meghan Masden; all of Cambridge, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Smith, Franklin Smith, and Willard Smith,Sr.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, at the First Baptist Church, 501 Glenburn Avenue, Cambridge, the Reverend Randall T. Blackmon presiding. Burial will follow at St. Andrews Cemetery, Princess Anne. Friends will be received at the church during the hour before the service. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

Sara M. Jackson

DAILSVILLE - Sara M. Jackson, 79, passed away on Sunday morning, March 16, 2003 at the Mallard Bay Care Center. She had resided at Mallard Bay since April of 2001. She was the wife of Ralph W. Jackson Jr.

Mrs. Jackson was born Feb. 17, 1924 at Griffith Neck, the daughter of the late Horace McLane and Melissa Travers Murphy. She was raised and attended public schools in Griffith Neck and Vienna.

Mrs. Jackson was married to Mr. Jackson on Jan. 25, 1947 and enjoyed being a "farm wife," including cooking and gardening. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, the Dorchester County Farm Bureau and a former 4-H leader.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Melissa Robbins and her husband, Steve; two sons, G. Philip Jackson and his wife, Diana and Ralph W. Jackson III (Sonny) and his wife, Gail, all of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren, Philip Jackson Jr., Paul M. Jackson, Dr. Krista Morgan, Shannon R. Jackson, Ralph W. Jackson IV (Trent), Lisa Edsall, Stephanie Robbins, Steven Barnett, Richard Barnett and Theresa Ferris; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, William T. Murphy of Griffith Neck; one niece and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, R. Grant Barnett; a brother, Horace G. Murphy and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Murphy.

A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the Rev. A. Delmer Willey Jr. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service. Burial will take place in Christ Churchyard.

Pallbearers will be Richard Barnett, Philip Jackson Jr., Paul M. Jackson, Ralph Jackson IV, Dr. Kevin Morgan and Goldsborough James Jr.

Memorials may be made to either Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613 or the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 900 Peachblossom Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Tyrone C. Wilson Sr.

EASTON - Tyrone Cornell Wilson Sr., 41, died suddenly Wednesday, March 4, 2001.

He was born Nov. 2, 1959 in Easton, the son of Laura Annie Wilson of Trappe and the late Clarence Edward Wilson Sr.

Mr. Wilson was educated in the public schools of Talbot County and graduated in 1977 from Easton High School. He was employed with the Orion Safety Products Co. for 10 years and he also worked in the bulk delivery for the Star Democrat.

Mr. Wilson was a member of the United House of Prayer in Williamsburg and served as a deacon and an usher. He was associated with the Unity Steppers and was often considered a Big Brother and friend in the Easton area. Many times he found time to chaperone school field trips. He loved sports.

Mr. Wilson enlisted in the United States Marines in1977 and was discharged in 1980.

He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Dorothy Wilson of Easton; two children, Tasha Wilson and Tyrone C. Wilson Jr., both of Easton; one granddaughter, Ty'era Wilson of Federalsburg; four brothers, Clarence E. Wilson Jr. and Kevin R. Wilson, both of Easton, Martin G. Wilson of Hurlock and Sgt. Timothy L. Wilson of California; a sister, Shante T. Wilson of Trappe. He is also survived by a mother and father-in-law, Dawson and Estelle Wilson Sr. of Easton; six sisters-in-law, Angela Brooks, Anna Wilson, La Toya Wilson, all of Easton, Dawn Wilson of Hurlock, Kathy King of Preston, Deborah Wilson of Atlanta, Ga.; four brothers-in-law, Vincent Brooks, Paul Wilson, Dawson Wilson, all of Easton and Robert King of Preston; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and a special friend, Bishop James Pinkney.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Easton with Bishop James Pinkney officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise Cemetery.

The Henry Funeral Home of Cambridge is handling the arrangements.

Eleanora L. Yates

CAMBRIDGE - Eleanora L. Yates, 84, passed away late Saturday night, March 17, 2001 at the Chesapeake Woods Center. She was the wife of the late Judge William B. Yates and had been in failing health for the past year.

She was born Jan. 17, 1917 in Sharptown, the daughter of the late William Edward and Jerusha Hurley Lowe. She was a graduate of Sharptown High School and later became a Registered Nurse after graduation from the Cambridge-Maryland Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Yates pursued a career in nursing at the Cambridge-Maryland Hospital and the Dorchester County Health Department, retiring in 1966.

She was married to Mr. Yates on Dec. 15, 1938. Mr. Yates, who was a retired Dorchester County District Court Judge, passed away on May 21, 1996.

Mrs. Yates was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the Cambridge Yacht Club.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Y. Yaeth of Cambridge; one son, William Baine Yates III of Snow Hill; five grandchildren, Charles C. Hillyer III, William Y. Hillyer, W. Sherwood Yates, Sidney B. Yates and Casandra Y. Peterson; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Naomi Owens of Chester, Edna Huston of Sharptown and Betty Collison of Cambridge. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Yates was preceded in death by three brothers, Levin Lowe, Fulton Lowe and Roy Lowe and one sister, Marie Hastings.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Alfred E. Taylor. Burial will take place in Old Trinity Churchyard.

Friends will be received at the church during the hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, c/o Shirley Kailianu, 8 Somerset Ave., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Pallbearers will be Clifford Collison, Eddie Collison, Robert Collison, James Peterson, William Y. Hillyer and Charles C. Hillyer III.

Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A.

Priscilla A. K. Ray

CAMBRIDGE - Priscilla Anne Keefer Ray, 76, who died on Feb. 16, 2001 in Cambridge, will have a memorial service.

Following the service of morning prayer at St. John's Chapel, Cornersville, 9:30 a.m. March 25, the Commendation from the Burial of the Dead will be read for the repose of the soul of Mrs. Ray. Inurnment was previously held in St. James Church, Monkton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in Mrs. Ray's memory to St. John's Chapel, Cornersville, 1213 Hudson Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Dorothy Cromwell

FELTON, Pa. - Dorothy (Dickinson) Cromwell, 77, formerly of Parkton, Md., died Monday, March 12, 2001 at York Hospital, York, Pa., following a brief illness.

She was the wife of Kenneth P. Cromwell with whom she celebrated a 56th wedding anniversary on Nov. 30, 2000.

Mrs. Cromwell was born March 23, 1923 in Waterbury, Conn., the daughter of the late Leonard A. and Bessie (Beach) Dickinson.

She was a homemaker and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Parkton, where she was an organist for many years and was a member of the Women's Group of the church.

She was a member of the Community Police Relations of Northern Baltimore County and was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Mrs. Cromwell is survived by four daughters: Tracey L. Phillips of Cambridge, Stewart L. Miller of Glen Burnie, Paige W. Demski of Bel Air and Courtney B. Cromwell of Glen Rock, Pa.; a son, John D. Cromwell of Felton, Pa.; two grandchildren and four sisters: Bernice Fuessenich of Litchfield, Conn., Lenore Skilton of Tucson, Ariz., Betsy Rice of Niantic, Conn., and Roberta Hanson of White Plains, N.Y.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. March 24 at St. James Episcopal Church in Parkton with her pastor, the Rev. Robert F. Miller officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to York Hospital, 1001 South George St., York, Pa. 17403 and/or St. James Episcopal Church, 19200 York Road, P.O. Box 420, Parkton, MD 21120.

The Geiple Funeral Home of Glen Rock, Pa., is in charge of the arrangements.
