Milton Truitt
HUDSON - Milton "Joe" Truitt, 79, passed away at the home of his son in Cambridge late Wednesday morning, April 2, 2003. He was the husband of the former Olive Travers.
He was born Oct. 28, 1923 at Wingate, the son of the late Waylon Hoytt and Essie Mae Robbins Truitt. He was raised in Dorchester County and was a graduate of Crapo High School.
Following graduation Mr. Truitt went to work at the Phillips Packing Co. can shop. In March of 1943 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and was in the Medical Corps. Prior to being discharged in December of 1945 he served his country in Europe and Africa. After the war he went back to the can shop, which later became National Can Co., retiring in 1982 as quality control supervisor.
Mr. Truitt was a member of Dorchester Post 91, American Legion and Choptank Memorial Post 7460, VFW.
Mr. Truitt is survived by his wife, to whom he was married in July of 1942; one daughter, Judy T. Rippons and her husband, Irvin of Ocean City; one son, Milton "Joe" Truitt and his wife, Kathy of Cambridge; four grandchildren, Tammy Doring, Jill Hartwell, Dawn Gootee and Jenny Truitt; five great-grandchilden, Rachel Doring, Caroline Doring, Ben Hartwell, Katherine Hartwell and Lauren Gootee and one niece, Debbie Weber.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul M. Truitt.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home by David W. Tolley. Burial will follow in the Spedden-Seward Cemetery at Hills Point with military honors.
Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service on Saturday.

Barbara A. Medford
PRESTON - Barbara A. Medford, 63, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
She was born Jan. 18, 1940 in Easton, the daughter of the late Oscar L. Mankamyer and Catherine L. Tipton Mankamyer.
After graduation from Easton High School in June 1958, she attended the Easton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing for one year. She then met and married Windsor W. Coulbourne on Aug. 17, 1959, who preceded her in death on April 25, 1981.
Mrs. Medford then became a certified nursing assistant and was a caregiver to many elderly people.
On July 1, 1989 she married Lester James Medford Jr.
She was a member of the Denton Wayside Church of Christ in Christian Union. She was active in the Women's Prayer Group and on the Sunshine Committee.
She loved to travel with her husband and had a love for horses. She also enjoyed family reunions and time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Medford is survived by her husband; four daughters, Cathy L. Henry and husband, Charles Sr., Cindy L. Moody, Carrie L. Brooks and husband, Ray and Cherie L. Adams; eight grandchilden, Eric Leh Jr., Jeremy Leh, Tiffany Henry, Thomas Short Jr., Troy L. Short and Trey M. Short, Donald L. Brooks Jr. and wife, Dawn and Tony L. Adams Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Meridith E. Brooks.
Mrs. Medford is also survived by two stepchildren, Barbara A. Tibbs and Rodney Medford; nine stepgrandchildren, Amy L. Betts, Charles Henry Jr., Kevin, Holly Ann, Jason, Justin and Jordan Tibbs, Rodney Medford Jr. and Chrissey Medford; one brother, Dale L. Mankamyer and wife, Carol; three sisters, I. Jean Stutsman and husband, Samuel, Deanna R. Good and husband, Robert and Linda L. Lewis and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Denton Wayside Church of Christ in Christian Union with the Rev. Paul Merritt officiating, assised by Brad Dixon and Rick Mumford. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shoe at Beulah. Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the service.

Margaret E. Stafford
CAMBRIDGE - Margaret Estella Stafford, 83, passed away suddenly Tuesday, April 3, 2001 at the Dorchester General Hospital.
She was born Sept. 13, 1917 in Crapo, daughter of the late John Wesley Slacum and Flora Mae Ennels.
Mrs. Stafford was a very active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, serving as a member of the Senior Choir, Building Committee, Usher Board and Trustee Board.
Her earlier years of employment were at Phillips Packing Co. and later at the Bumble Bee Tuna Co.
Mrs. Stafford is survived by a daughter, Ada Wongus of Cambridge; two sons, Vivian Stafford and Donald Stafford, both of Fort Washington; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; three nieces: Katherine Opher of Cambridge, Dorena Ennals of Baltimore, Mary Woolford of Hurlock; two nephews: Charles Ennals and Noble Rogers, both of Cambridge; a son-in-law, Eldridge Wongus Sr. of Cambridge; two daughters-in-law, Barbara Stafford of Baltimore and Myra Stafford of Fort Washington; six special friends: Leotha Slacum, Monzella Woolford, Cleo Bowe, Catherine Ennals, Maureen Ross and Elizabeth Cromwell and numerous cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. April 9 at the Refuge Temple Church of God with the Rev. Darlene Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery.
There will be a viewing 6-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke UM Church.

Gwendolyn C. J. Giles
CAMBRIDGE - Gwendolyn Christine Jackson Giles, 49, passed away Friday, April 6, 2001 at her home.
She was born Oct. 9, 1951 in Cambridge, daughter of Gerald and Jean Christine Wongus.
Mrs. Giles was educated in the Dorchester County Public School System and graduated from North Dorchester High School in 1969. She furthered her education as a certified nurses assistant. Her primary duty was to take care of prominent entertainer parents in Oceanside, Calif.
In 1984 she moved back to Dorchester and worked at Acme Food Store, DCDC Head Start, and Black & Decker. She was employed at Western Printing Co. until her health failed.
Mrs. Giles became a Christian at an early age and joined Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna. She enjoyed singing and later joined the Youth Choir. She was also a member of the family group, "The Famileers." She later joined Soul Outreach Christian Center in Cambridge and sung with the JCG Ensemble.
Mrs. Giles' hobbies were singing, coin collecting and cooking. She enjoyed family gatherings and traveling.
She is survived by her husband, Philip H. Giles and four daughters: Shondolyn A. Dotson, Sharel T. Camper, Shakezia J. Brisco, Zsa'keyia S. Giles and one son, Francis E. Brisco III, all of Cambridge; five grandchildren: Rodney Dotson , Shabreya Brisco, Alvin L. Dotson III, Ryneka Harris, John L. Camper Jr.; one child she raised, Shamika L. Winston and other children whom she treated as her own - Maurice R. Stanley, Miko S. Collins, both of Cambridge and Charles Streeter Jr. of Easton. She is also survived by a stepsister, Cassandra Jennings of Severna Park; two sons-in-law, Alvin L. Dotson Jr. of Cambridge and John L. Camper of Hurlock; an aunt, Doretha Green of Preston; four uncles, Sherwood Jackson of Vienna, Calvin Williams of Baltimore, Carroll Williams of Vienna and Jerome Williams of East New Market; mother-in-law, Rosie Giles of Cambridge; three sisters-in-law, Portia Giles, Gloria McKnight, both of Cambridge and Cheerlyn Cooper Giles of Trappe; three brothers-in-law, Lewis Giles of Wheaton, Larry Giles of Baltimore and Mark Giles of Hampton, Va.; two close friends, Colethia Chester of Cambridge and Ella Greer of Oceanside, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, William Giles and many great-uncles and aunts.
A funeral service will be held noon Wednesday at the Wesley UM Church in Vienna with the Rev. Darlene Dixon officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6-8 tonight at the Wesley Church and from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Oneita R. Truax
CAMBRIDGE - Oneita R. Truax, 96, passed away Wednesday night, April 9, 2003 at the Chesapeake Woods Center where she had resided for several years. She was the wife of the late Claude L. Truax.
She was born May 6, 1906 at Robbins, the daughter of the late Richard Joshua and Ada Virginia Tyler Robbins. She attended public schools in Dorchester County and in 1926 graduated from the Towson Normal School.
On June 22, 1929 she was married to Mr. Truax. Mrs. Truax taught in the Dorchester County public schools for many years, retiring in 1975 and loved teaching young people. During this time she taught at Hooper Island Elementary, Academy School and Cambridge Junior High. In 1965 she was named "Teacher of the Year" by the Dorchester County Board of Education.
Mrs. Truax was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and the Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Truax passed away on Oct. 1, 1965.
Mrs. Truax is survived by one daughter, Wanda Ciekot and her husband, Dan of Morris Neck; two grandchildren, Lewis L. "Skip" Long III of Williston, Fla. and David A. Ciekot of Cambridge; one brother, Calvin Robbins of Cambridge; two sisters, Ann R. Dunn of Cambridge and Hilda R. Bryan of Secretary and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, L. Jane Long; a granddaughter, Mary Jane Long; one brother, Clifford Robbins and two sisters, Stella Robbins and Emma R. Eby.
A funeral service will be conducted 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the Rev. Dale L. Vroman. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service.

Charles W. Beckwith
CAMBRIDGE - Charles W. Beckwith, 75, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. He had been in failing health for the past two months and had been admitted to the hospital on Monday.
He was born April 1, 1928 at Mt. Holly, the son of the late William B. and Florence Spedden Beckwith.
Mr. Beckwith had attended schools in Cambridge. He had been engaged in farming for most of his life. He had been a grain farmer and also a produce farmer. For some years he had operated Stoney Acres Farm. For 30 years he had operated a weekly produce market in Baltimore and had also had his own produce markets at Chateau and at Dailsville. He had also worked on the water for a number of years, and enjoyed harvesting seafood.
Mr. Beckwith had attended Chateau Community Church. He was a Past Governor, and 50-year member of the Cambridge Moose Lodge 1211; Past President of the Dorchester County Farm Bureau, Dorchester County Elections Board, FHA Board and the Dorchester County Easement Board.
His survivors include two sisters, Hannah Bennett of Cambridge and Dorothy B. Nave of Trappe; one brother, William H. Beckwith of Cambridge; six nieces and nephews, Omro Willey, Gary Willey, Patricia Tindall, Dr. Jay Nave, William H. Beckwith Jr. and Dianna B. Short; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral home in Cambridge with the Rev. Harold P. Spedden officiating. Burial will follow at the East New Market Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 9 tonight at the funeral home and on Saturday during the hour preceding the service.

Alma L. Rayne
WILLARDS - Alma Louise Dennis Rayne, 88, of Cobbs Hill Farm, passed away on Wednesday, April 9, 2003. For 42 years she was the wife of the late Richard W. Rayne Sr. who died in 1975.
Mrs. Rayne was born July 1, 1914 in Willards, daughter of the late Herman and Flossie Dennis.
She loved to cook, enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens, loved her cats and was an avid reader.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters, Richard W. Rayne Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Nacogdoches, Texas, Judith and her husband, Maurice Oaks of Doylestown, Pa., Susan and her husband, David Orem of Salisbury and Michael Rayne and his wife, Karen of Salisbury. In addition she is survived by eight grandchilden, Richard Rayne III, Kelley Spurrier, Leigh Cannon, Kimberly Oaks, Theodore Eschenburg Jr., Tracie Eschenburg, Benjamin Rayne, Jonathan Rayne and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Lynch of Selbyville, Del. and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by a brother, Olen Dennis, who was lost in action in the South Pacific during World War II and two sisters, Edna Timmons and Betty Dennis.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service 11 a.m. April 14 at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Dennis Family Cemetery in Willards.

Frances P. Skinner
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Frances Phillips Skinner, 92, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 under hospice care in Memorial Hospital, Ormond Beach.
Mrs. Skinner was born Nov. 20, 1908 in Cambridge, the daughter of the prominent Colonel Albanus and Daisy Lewis Phillips.
Mrs. Skinner moved to Florida with her children in 1951 where she lived the rest of her life. She loved to travel and be near the ocean. Her hobbies were golf, tennis, needlework, walking and traveling. One of her life long dreams was to travel to Antarctica to see the Phillips Mountains named for her father by the late Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd.
Mrs. Skinner was devoted to her mother, father and children.
She is survived by her three children, Edgar M. Skinner III of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla., Theodora Skinner Shelor of Cambridge and Andrew Phillips Skinner of Demorest, Ga.; six grandchildren, Edgar M. Skinner IV, Mary Jane Skinner, Gregory Skinner, Nitzan (Heather) Zecharya, Christopher Skinner and Andrew P. Skinner Jr.; four great-grandchildren, Shannon Skinner, Heather Skinner, Shiran Zecharya and Nitai Zecharya. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Skinner was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Wehr and two brothers, Albanus Phillips Jr. and Theodore Phillips.
A brief funeral service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Nathaniel W. Pierce officiating.
Mrs. Skinner will rest in the Phillips family plot in Christ Churchyard in Cambridge.

Margaret D. Finley
HURLOCK - Margaret Dolores Finley, 70, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2001 at Chesapeake Woods in Cambridge.
She was born Aug. 6, 1930 in Baltimore, daughter of the late Harry James Sprole and Ruby Mary Spear Sprole.
For many years she worked at the Wockenfuss Candy Co. in Baltimore.
On Sept. 25, 1948 she married James A. Finley Sr. He preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 1997.
Mrs. Finley is survived by two sons and their wives, James A. and Linda Finley Jr. of Westminster and Robert Michael and Maureen Finley of Belair; one daughter and her husband, Cheryl Ann and Dean Bailey of Hurlock; five grandchildren, Amy Hergenhan, Steven Finley, Ryan Finley, Kevin Bailey and Lauren Bailey; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Martha Edge of Rhodesdale.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery Chapel in Beulah with the Rev. Denzil Cheek officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market.
Pallbearers will be Steve Finley, Ryan Finley, Kevin Bailey, Bill Edge, Ron Posey and Pat Kerins.

Jerome H. Kern
SEAFORD, Del. - Jerome Hart Kern, 64, died Sunday, April 15, 2001 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
He was born Sept. 29, 1936 in Easton, the son of Hilda Bee Kern Franz of Seaford and the late John W. Kern Jr.
He was a graduate of Federalsburg High School's Class of 1955. He served as a cook in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Bronson from 1955 to 1959. He was a machine operator for DuPont Nylon Plant in Seaford until his retiring after 27 years in 1987.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Kern is survived by his wife, Diane Towers Kern; a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Douglas Parsons of Elkton and a stepbrother, Elmer Franz of Federalsburg.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Henry Franz and his twin brother, John A. Kern.
Graveside services for him will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg with the Rev. Gayle Conrow, officiating.
Friends may call at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
