HENRY R. WEITZELL
Henry R. 'Ike' Weitzell, 84, Capon Bridge, W.Va., died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.
Born May 12, 1915, in Garrett County, he was a son of the late George W. and Annie (Lohr) Weitzell.
He retired from the CIA. He was a member of the Capon Bridge American Legion Post 137. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel S. Weitzell, whom he married May 28, 1938; and one brother, Everett C. Weitzell, Winchester.
At the deceased’s request, his body has been cremated, and services were be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Capon Bridge American Legion Post 137, Capon Bridge, WV 26711.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Giffin Funeral Home, Capon Bridge.
MADGALENE TWIGG
Madgalene 'Lena' Twigg, 92, Ridgeley, W.Va., died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at the Hampshire Health Care Center, Romney, W.Va.
Born Nov. 22, 1906, in Patterson Creek, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Annie (Harrick) Logsdon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Melvin Twigg; one daughter, Camillia Dowden; one son, Chester C. Twigg; one granddaughter; four brothers; two sisters; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; her foster mother; four foster sisters; and two foster brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include one son, Douglas E. Twigg, Cumberland; four daughters, Reba J. McGuire, Cumberland, Evangeline 'Penny' Ratcliff, Patterson Creek, Wilma M. Broll, Baltimore, and Dorothea J. Miller, Grantsville; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cumberland, where a service was conducted Wednesday, Nov. 17, with the Rev. Darrell S. Tichinel officiating. Interment was in the Fort Ashby (W.Va.) Cemetery.
ELOISE R. CALLIS
Eloise R. Callis, 69, Mountain Lake Park, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at her home.
Born March 4, 1930, in Rowlesburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur E. and Emma (Moon) Friend. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Melvin 'Buss' Callis, in 1988.
Survivors include two sons, Douglas Callis, Oakland, and Brian E. Callis, Mtn. Lake Park; one brother, Donald Friend, Mtn. Lake Park; and three grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church on Saturday, Nov. 13, with the Rev. Dennis Leatherman officiating. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery.
KEVIN M. CLARK
Kevin Michael Clark, 34, Finzel, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born July 15, 1965, in Cumberland, he was a son of Paul G. and Evelyn (Wilhelm) Clark, Finzel.
He was an assistant cook, along with his mother, at the Grantsville Senior Center.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Pocahontas, Pa., the Eastern Garrett County Volunteer Fire Company, and Fraternal Order of Eagles, Arie 1273, Frostburg.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Krista Clark; two stepchildren, Andrew McKenzie and Kaitie McKenzie; two brothers, Brian Clark, Gallup, N.M., and Timothy Clark, Finzel; one sister, Julie Clark, at home; and his maternal grandmother, Leora B. Wilhelm, St. Petersburg, Fla.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg. A service was conducted at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Monday, with the Rev. Fr. Bernard White as celebrant. Interment was in the Finzel Cemetery.

JAMES L. FRANTZ
James Lloyd Frantz, 90, Friendsville, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at the Henry Clay Villa, Markleysburg, Pa.
Born Oct. 24, 1909, near Friendsville, he was a son of the late James Henry and Martha Ellen (Fike) Frantz. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Laura Belle (Thornburgh) Frantz, on Jan. 3, 1998; five brothers; and five sisters.
He was a lifelong member of the Asher Glade Church of the Brethren, where he served as a church deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the church choir. He was a retired farmer and truck driver.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville. A service was conducted at the Asher Glade Church of the Brethren on Wednesday, Nov. 17, with the Rev. Joe Brown and the Rev. Donald Matthews officiating. Interment was in the Asher Glade Cemetery.
CATHARINE J. MILLER
Catharine J. Miller, 92, Grantsville, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home.
Born April 23, 1907, in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late Jonas and Barbara (Swartzentruber) Miller. She was also preceded death by four brothers, Evan J. Miller, Floyd J. Miller, Ivan J. Miller, and Harvey J. Miller; and six sisters, Alma Maust, Verna Maust, Annie Scheffel, Mable Miller, Edna Maust, and Rhoda Maust. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a member of the Oak Dale Mennonite Church, where she was very active in church groups and activities. She served as a missionary in Luxembourg for the Conservative Mennonite Conference. She worked as both a missionary and a bookbinder.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. A service was conducted at the Maple Glen Mennonite Church on Sunday, Nov. 14, with the Rev. Joseph Byler officiating. Interment was in the Maple Glen Cemetery.

L. FREDLOCK SCHENK
L. Fredlock Schenk, 85, Oakland, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at the Cuppett-Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born June 19, 1914, in Kitzmiller, he was a son of the late Ambrose F. and Lois (Paugh) Schenk. He was also preceded in death by one son, Douglas Schenk.
He was a retired farmer and carpenter and was a former partner in Western Trails, Inc. He was a member of the Local 1665, Carpenter’s Union, Alexandria, Va.
Survivors include two sons, Larry F. Schenk, Oakland, and Milton E. 'Sam' Schenk, Manchester, N.H.; one sister, Irene Ryon, falls Church, Va.; two brothers, John B. Schenk and Dwight T. Schenk, both of Aberdeen; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Monday, Nov. 15, with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating. Cremation followed the service.
HARLESS A. FRIEND
Harless A. Friend, 60, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at his home.
Born Feb. 22, 1939, in Terra Alta, he was a son of the late Clinton A. and Daisy (Johnson) Friend.
He was a former steelworker in the Baltimore area and was a member of the Church of Christ, Parkersburg, W.Va. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa A. Smith, Washington, W.Va., and Denise L. Johnson, Conway, S.C.; one son, Tony L. Friend, Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren; five sisters, Wilma Jean Shockley, Milford, Del., Elizabeth Haskell, Terra Alta, Linda Stiles, Jessup, Doris Ashby, Corinth, W.Va., and Dottie Alexander, Crellin; and two brothers, Clinton E. 'Sammy' Friend and Theodore 'Teddy' Friend, both of Corinth.
An interment service will be conducted at the Bray Cemetery, Oakland, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m. Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans organizations in southern Garrett County.

EDITH M. BRENAMAN
Edith Maythorne Brenaman, 93, Cumberland, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home, Grantsville.
Born July 14, 1906, in Jerome, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Samuel Marcus and Mary H. (Baum) Horchler. She was also preceded in death by her husband, G. Wyatt Brenaman; one brother, Freeman Horchler; and one sister, Dorothy Livingood.
She was a graduate of the Salisbury-Elklick High School and the Catherman’s Business School. She had 43 years of servcie with the Celanese Corporation, where she was a secretary. She was a member of St. Mark’s Community Church, Ladies Shrine Club, Women’s Sport Club, and a charter member of Re Temple 118, Daughters of the Nile.
Surviving are one brother, Charles B. Horchler, Millersburg, Pa.; and three sisters, Mary Keiffer, Harrisburg, Pa., Hazel Beever, York, Pa., and Ruth Haning, Woodstock, Ill.
Friends were received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Cumberland, where a service was conducted earlier today, Nov. 18, with the Rev. Harold T. Shaffer officiating. Interment was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

MARY F. LOAR
Mary Frances (Meek) Loar, 75, Eckhart, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at the Frostburg home of her sisters, where she had been residing.
Born May 23, 1924, in Frostburg, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Stewart and Amy (Brain) Meek.
She attended Hill Street School and Old Beall High School and, in 1942, she was a member of the first full-year senior class to graduate from the 'new' Beall High School. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Frostburg State Teachers’ College and did post-graduate work through the University of Maryland.
She was a substitute teacher in several schools while attending college because of a shortage of teachers during World War II. She later did subsitute teaching in Allegany County.
She retired after 17 years of teaching school. Her first year was at the Jennings School in Garrett County, where she taught first through third grade. She taught her remaining 16 years in Cumberland.
She was an active member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, and was active in many civic organizations.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, James H. Loar, Eckhart; one stepdaughter, Susan Loar Richie, Eckhart; two step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Martha Meek and Amy Meek, both of Frostburg.
