Archie Palamaras Sr.
SALEM - Archie Palamaras Sr., 82, died Saturday morning, May 12, 2001 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
Born Jan. 26, 1919 in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of the late Archimet Palamaras and Georgianna Legrand Palamaras. When he was young, his family moved to McDonald, Pa., where he graduated from high school in 1940.
Immediately after high school, he served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II from June 12, 1940 to June 10, 1945. The battles and campaigns in which he served were Algeria French Morocco, Naples Foggia, North Apennines, Po Valley, Rome Arno, Sicily and Tunisia.
He was an army tank driver and French interpreter. He was awarded the American Defense Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
While he was stationed at Fort Meade, he met the former Dorothy (Dot) Insley, originally of Madison. They were married July 5, 1945.
From Pennsylvania, they moved to Cambridge, where they owned Archie & Dot's Variety Store on High Street for 17 years. Mr. Palamaras also worked for Murray's Cookies.
When Mr. Palamaras was in good health, he enjoyed fishing.
Surviving besides his wife of 55 years is a son, Archie Palamaras Jr. and his wife Diana of East New Market; a daughter, Donna Hurley and her husband T-Berry of Salem; a sister, Elaina Edgar and an uncle, Joe Lagrand of McDonald, Pa.; six grandchildren, Mark Hurlock, Shannon Palamaras, Shane Palamaras, Rusty Hurley, Cathy Gore, Nick Palamaras Jr. and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were a son, Nick Edward Palamaras and a grandson, Brian Edward Hurley.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Shirley Evans will officiate.
Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Russell Hurley Jr. (T-Berry), Shannon Palamaras, Shane Palamaras, Nick Palamaras and Shannon Gore.

Joan E. Jernigan
MILLINGTON - Joan Elizabeth Jernigan, 22, died Sunday, May 13, 2001 in Easton.
She was born March 29, 1979 in Annapolis, daughter of John Robert Jernigan of Pasadena and Cynthia Jane Brewer of Hurlock.
Miss Jernigan was a 1997 graduate of North Dorchester High School and at the time of her death was Head of Housekeeping at the Chesapeake Hotel in Grasonville.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by three sisters, Jane Marie Jernigan of Hurlock, Joyce Kristine Saunders of Preston, Julie Ann Sellers of Secretary; two brothers, John Joseph Jernigan of Pasadena, Aaron Charles Burrows of Hurlock; two stepbrothers, Michael Darpino of Pasadena and Martin Darpino of Glen Burnie; paternal grandmother, Joann G. Jernigan of Easton and maternal grandparents, Charles and Betty Jane Brewer of Edgewater. She is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A Catholic funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market. Burial will follow at Unity Washington Cemetery in Hurlock.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Roy B. Nordike
HURLOCK - Roy B. Nordike, 46, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born Sept. 30, 1954 in Easton, son of Roy Dean Nordike of Easton and the late Helen R. Ewing Nordike.
Mr. Nordike served 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as a master sergeant. After his discharge, he worked for a short time for the U.S. Postal Service. At the time of his death, he was working with R&D Lawn Care, as a truck driver for Dennis Reid Jr., and as an auto mechanic for Richard Thurman.
In addition to his father, Mr. Nordike is survived by his wife, Theresa Ann Nordike of Hurlock; two sons, Richard Kenneth Nordike and David Joseph Nordike; two daughters, Sara Jamie-Lynn Nordike and Jessica Lea-Ann Nordike, all of Hurlock; one brother, Joseph D. Nordike of Easton; seven sisters - Theresa N. Reid of Rhodesdale, Mary Helen Lowery of Tilghman, Jane V. Pajula of Easton, Kay F. Wilson of Easton, Carol R. Chrysovergis of Baltimore, Rita M. Harner of Boonsboro and Joan N. Dyott of Easton and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Grace Baptist Church in Hurlock with Pastor Dave Stewart officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Beulah.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church in Hurlock.
Pallbearers will be Robin Ewing, John Ewing, Mike Ewing, Steven Ewing, Howard Andrew and Ricky Davis.

R. Sherwood Wright Sr.
CAMBRIDGE - R. Sherwood Wright Sr., 75, of the Neck District, died Sunday night, May 13, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Lee Wright of the Neck District; two sons, Robert Sherwood Wright Jr. and his wife, Cheryl of Estherville, Iowa, Robert Alan Wright and his wife, Rebecca of the Neck District; a daughter, Ellen LaVerne Paul of Cambridge; two stepchildren, Roland Karl Lee of Dallas, Texas, David Stephen Lee of Pennsylvania and three grandchildren, Cody Wright, Julie Wright and Jamie Wright.
Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Claire LaVerne Spedden.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Gloria Attix officiating at the service. Burial will follow at Spedden-Seward Cemetery.

Melville F. Hubbard Jr.
EASTON - Melville Francis Hubbard Jr., known as "Hoppy," 68 died Monday, May 14, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
He was born Aug. 15, 1932 in Federalsburg, son of the late Melville F. Hubbard Sr., and Marie A. Gallagher Hubbard.
He graduated from Federalsburg High School and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hubbard was a trucking company dispatcher and was also a pressman.
He was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg and the VFW Post 5246 in Federalsburg.
Mr. Hubbard is survived by a son, Gregory Hubbard of Ridgely; two daughters, Joni Blizzard of Federalsburg and Jennifer Coleman of Easton; three grandchildren and a sister, Etta Mae Andrew of Federalsburg.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg.
Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Memorial Hospital at Easton, c/o Intensive Care Unit, 219 South Washington St., Easton, MD 21601.

MARATHAN, Fla. - Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery Chapel in Beulah for Rudolph Thomas Steenken, 57, formerly of Preston, who died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at the Veterans' Medical Center in Miami, Fla. The Rev. Howard Dunn will officiate.

Emory B. Corkran Jr.
HURLOCK - Emory Bryan Corkran Jr., 77, died Friday, May 18, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
He was born Aug. 31, 1923 in Hurlock, the son of the late Emory Bryan Corkran Sr. and Hazel Benson Corkran.
A 1940 graduate of Hurlock High School, he attended Goldey Business College in Wilmington, Del. During World War II, Mr. Corkran served as an Army staff sergeant attached to General MacArthur's headquarters in the Philippines.
He was a member of Unity-Washington United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Hurlock American Legion Post 243.
After the war, Mr. Corkran returned to Hurlock to work in the family farming operation, Chesterfield Farms, where he became a partner. Recently, Chesterfield Farms was designated as a Maryland Century Farm, an award that honors continuous farm ownership by one family for 100 years or more.
Mr. Corkran is survived by his wife, Ann I. Corkran; a daughter, Vicki C. Willey and a son, Richard B. Corkran, all of Hurlock, as well as a granddaughter, Megan C. Willey of College Park and two grandsons, Bryan L. Willey and Adam B. Corkran, both of Hurlock. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Louise Stevens of Hurlock.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. today at the Unity-Washington Cemetery in Hurlock with the Rev. Ruth T. Tull and the Rev. Lloyd R. Foard officiating.
Pallbearers will be Richard B. Corkran, Adam B. Corkran, Bryan L. Willey, Herman Moxey, C. Malcolm Stevens and Michael D. Corkran.

Shirley C. McCulley
HURLOCK - Shirley C. McCulley, 61, died at her home Saturday, May 19, 2001.
She was born Dec. 8, 1936 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Philip and Dora Corkran of Rhodesdale.
Mrs. McCulley graduated from Hurlock High School in 1954, the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science degree in 1958 and received her master of science degree from the university in 1966.
In 1960 she married Conrad L. McCulley, who preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. McCulley was a secondary school teacher for most of her adult life, teaching at schools that included North Dorchester High School and SS. Peter and Paul High School in Easton. She retired from North Dorchester Middle School in 1996.
She was on the vestry of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Hurlock and had also served as a junior warden. Other community involvements included membership on the board of directors of the Waddell Foundation and the Silver and Gold Program of Chesapeake College, and secretary on the Dorchester County Arts Council.
Mrs. McCulley is survived by a son, Jeffrey L. McCulley of New York, N.Y., and a daughter, Catherine A. McCulley of Wilmington, N.C., and two grandsons. She is also survived by a sister, Phyllis C. Ralph of East New Market; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Jimmy D. Payne of Rhodesdale.
A funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Unity Washington Methodist Church in Hurlock, with the Rev. Guy Butler officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul's PE Cemetery in Vienna.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market.

CAMBRIDGE - Donald V. Lord Jr., 65, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2001 at the Talbot Hospice House in Easton.
Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Hilda Mae Willin
FEDERALSBURG - Hilda Mae Pritchett Willin, 78, died Saturday, May 19, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born Sept. 1, 1922 in Bridgetown, in northern Caroline County, the daughter of the late Gustavius and Annie Radcliff Pritchett.
She was a homemaker and a member of Gold Wings, Tour Riders and Retreads Motor Cycle Clubs and the Caroline County Farm Bureau.
She is survived by her husband, H. Vincent Willin; four children, Roy B. Lare, Barbara J. Patrick, Cindy L. Willin and Curtis E. Willin, all of Federalsburg; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Willin was preceded in death by a son, Randy Dale Willin on July 8, 1978 and a brother, James Pritchett.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg with the Rev. Howard Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg.
