G. Winfield Bell

VIENNA - G. Winfield (Winnie) Bell, 83, died Wednesday morning, May 16, 2001 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

He was born April 6, 1918 in Reid's Grove, the son of the late Joseph E. Bell and Lena Murphy Bell.

On Aug. 18, 1938 he married the former Frances Lawson of Griffith's Neck.

Mr. Bell served in country in World War II, where he was a U.S. Army veteran and toured in the Pacific Theatre.

For 10 years he owned and operated Winnie Bell's Grocery Store in Vienna. For most of his working life he was employed for the Dorchester County Roads Board as a supervisor, retiring in 1981.

Mr. Bell was a member of the Vienna United Methodist Church, where he was an usher for many years.

He was a member of the Chicone Ruritan Club of Vienna for several years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 91 and was also an avid gardener.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bell is survived by a daughter, Wende B. Abbott of Owings Mills; two grandchildren, Brent and Amy Abbott and a brother, Charles A. Bell of Vienna.

Preceding him in death besides his parents wa a sister, Mary Wilson and three brothers, Roy Bell, Lloyd Bell and Emerson Bell.

The family received friends May 17 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Funeral services will held 1 p.m. May 18 at the Vienna United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell and the Rev. William Humphreys officiating. Burial followed at Dorchester Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steve Hurst, Charles Bell, David Owens, Glen Carowan, Billy Wilson and William Short.

Honorary Pallbearers were Bernard Murphy, Granville Hurst, Nelson Neil, Gene Johnson and Robert (Bobby) Spear.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to Vienna United Methodist Church, c/o Anne Hurst, P.O. Box 213, Vienna, MD 21869 or to Vienna Volunteer Fire Company, c/o Lori Bradley, 5318 Rhodesdale Vienna Road, Vienna, MD 21869.

Oscar W. Nelson

NANTICOKE - Oscar W. Nelson, 79, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.

William E. Seward

COOKS POINT - William E. Seward Jr., 58, passed away at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Tuesday, May 20, 2003. He was the husband of the former Linda Rhea.

He was born on June 3, 1944 in Cambridge, the son of Mildred Thomas Seward and the late William Edmonds Seward. He was raised at Hills Point and was a 1962 graduate of Cambridge High School.

For a while after he finished school he worked at the Phillips Wholesale Hardware Co., Cambridge Wire Cloth Co., and for R.R.M. Carpenter Jr. For many years he worked the family farm "Sandy Acres." He had also been self-employed as a landscaper and a waterman.

Mr. Seward enjoyed fishing and hunting and was captain of his own boat, "Billy boy." He was a member of the Neck District Volunteer Fire Company and the Grand National Waterfowl Association. He attended Spedden United Methodist Church and was a regular at the "John Lewis University."

Mr. Seward is survived by his wife, to whom he was married on June 15, 1968; one daughter, Kim D. Seward and her companion, Joe Magrogan and one son, Jason W. Seward, both of Cambridge; his mother, Mildred E. Seward of Hudson; two sisers, Janice Miller and her husband, Larry of Salisbury, Lynn Sharp of Hills Point; one and special friends.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Spedden UM Church at Hudson at 1 p.m. on Saturday by the Rev. Donald A. Schell. Burial will follow in Seward-Spedden Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Thomas Funeral Home from 7:30 to 9 tonight and in the church on Saturday during the hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to either Spedden UM Church, c/o Carolyn Wright, 507 Gay St., Cambridge, MD 21613 or the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center, Weinberg Building, 401 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21231.

Active pallbearers will be John Lewis, Phil Spedden, Gene Brite, Radcliffe Wheatley, Danny Windsor, David Marshall, David Marshall Jr., and Bobby Sellers. Toney Goodman-Jones

VIENNA - Toney Goodman-Jones, 46, from Los Angeles, Calif., passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at his mother's home in Vienna.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reid's Grove Cemetery in Vienna.

Arrangements are being handled by the Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804.

Dolores C. Hargis

TRAPPE - Dolores C. "Dee" Hargis, 56, passed away on Thursday morning, May 29, 2003 at Hospice House in Easton after a year-long illness.

She was born June 29, 1946 in Queens, N.Y., the daughter of the late John Joseph and Estelle Salmon O'Brien. She was raised in Richmond Hills and graduated from Richmond Hills High School in 1963.

While in New York, Mrs. Hargis worked for the Home Insurance Co. and Sinclair Oil Co. as a bookkeeper for six years until moving to Cambridge. At this time she accepted a position at the Tidewater Inn in Easton and later became Comptroller. She was later employed in the same capacity at the St. Michaels Harbor Inn and Marina for 11 years.

Dee was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge and Easton Lodge 1622, B.P.O.E.

She is survived by her husband, Richard S. "Dickey" Hargis; one brother and sisters-in-law, Thomas W. and Judy O'Brien of Richmond, Va.; several aunts and uncles; one niece, Tiffany O. Nels and her husband, Michael of Austin, Texas and a stepmother, Pat O'Brien of Clayton, N.C.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Marian J. Paulette.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge by the Rev. Dale L. Brown. Burial will take place in Old Trinity Churchyard. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday during the hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to the Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601.

Pallbearers will be Wylie Burton, Roger Brake, Herbert Dodson Jr., Chad Everett, Donald Haring and Clifford Collison Jr.

CAMBRIDGE - Funeral services for Randall Rievone Lee Jr. (Willie) who passed away May 25, 2003 at Dorchester General Hospital will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge. A viewing will be held 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Thelma O. M. Cornish

WORTON - Thelma Oretta Murray Cornish, 83, formerly of Washington, D.C. passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003 at Magnolia Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown.

She was born Dec. 25, 1919 in Salem, the eighth child in a family of 14, to the late George and Vera Hopkins Murray.

Mrs. Cornish was a retired educator from the Maryland State Department of Education. As a supervisor, she made significant contributions in the field of elementary and adult education.

She received her early education at Salem Elementary School in Dorchester County, graduating from Frederick Douglas St. Clair High School in 1937. She received her bachelor of science degree from Delaware State Collage, and her master's degree from Temple University.

She did additional studies at American University, University of Maryland, and the George Washington University. She earned certificates in Adult Education from the Inter-University Institute at the University of Maryland and Wayne State University. She served as a teacher and supervisor of Elementary Instruction in Calvert County, from 1945-1965.

In October 1965, Mrs. Cornish joined the Maryland State Department of Education as Supervisor of Adult Basic Education where she drafted a proposal to use television to help implement the Adult Education program. This program, being disseminated nationally, won her the Ohio State University Award in 1975.

She served as a Consultant in Adult Education from 1972-1974 with the United States Office of Education. She served as Director of U.S.O.E., Region III Institute for Administrators of Adult Basic Education, George Washington University, Washington, D.C. in 1967. From 1973-1975, she served in numerous capacities with persons selected by the U. S. Commissioner of Education for Adults.

Mrs. Cornish was affiliated with many organizations and received numerous awards: Maryland Association of Adult Education, Maryland Association for Publicly Supported Continuing Education, Adult Education Association of the USA, National Technical Association, Maryland State Retired Teachers' Association, Delta Sigma Omega Chapter of the AKA Sorority, Outstanding Maryland Adult Education, Outstanding National Adult Education, Certificate of Achievement and Outstanding Service, Board of Education, Calvert County, and was appointed as a Legacy Honoree of the Delaware State University Alumni Association.

Mrs. Cornish received her early religious background at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, Salem. In 1960, she became a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, Washington, D.C. She was an active member and supporter of the church-community outreach ministries serving with the United Methodist Women and various ad hoc committees. At the conference level she served on the Ethnic Minority Committee in the local church, N. M. Carroll Home for Retired Ministers and Spouses and the Board of Child Care Auxiliary for Neglected Children.

Due to declining health, she moved to the Eastern Shore, Worton, with her sister, Lula Washington. She became an associate member of Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church and was a participant in the Ada Butler Missionary Society.

On Sept. 18, 1949, she was joined in holy matrimony to Dr. Thomas Neba Cornish. At this union, she became mother to Barbara Chichester.

Mrs. Cornish is survived by a son-in-law, Charles Chichester; a grandson and his wife, Kevin and Andrea Chichester; a great-granddaughter, Alexandra Chichester; two sisters, Lula Washington, and Vera (and Gregory) Brockman; three brothers, Floyd (and Mildred) Murray, George (and Annie) Murray, and Hayward Murray; a niece/sister, Lauretta Freeman; two other sisters-in-law, Betty Murray and Elizabeth Cornish; a brother-in-law, Granville Tilghman; and a number of other nieces and nephews and other relatives.

In addition to her husband and stepdaughter, she was preceded in death by five sisters: Villa Jackson, Ethel Burroughs, Mary Louise Murray, Lena Larkin, and Esther Tilghman; one brother, Isidore Murray; one nephew/brother, Harvey Murray; and three brothers-in-law.

Public viewing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Butlertown. A memorial service will be held from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, Washington D.C. and final services at 11 a.m. on Monday from the Hurlock United Methodist Church, Hurlock.

Bennie Smith Funeral Home of Butlertown is handling the arrangements.

L. O'Neill Jones

WINGATE - L. O'Neill Jones, 85, passed away at his home Tuesday, May 22, 2001.

Mr. Jones was a well-known boat builder in the Wingate area for many years. He was the husband of the former Lola Ann Robinson.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service on Thursday.

Michael D. Corkran

HURLOCK - Michael Derr Corkran, 50, died Monday, May 21, 2001 at his home.

He was born Aug. 19, 1949 in Easton, the son of the late William O. and Hazel Derr Corkran.

Mr. Corkran graduated from North Dorchester High School in 1967 and from Towson State College in 1971 with a degree in music education.

From 1971 to 1978 Mr. Corkran was employed as a vocal music teacher at Dundalk Elementary School in Baltimore County. In 1975 he received a master's degree in elementary education. In 1979 he moved back to the Eastern Shore where he began his employment with Provident State Bank in Preston. He graduated from the Maryland Banking School in 1987. At the time of his death, Mr. Corkran was the compliance officer and a vice president, handling internal auditing for the bank. He remained active in the family farm corporation and had also worked as a professional organist for many years.

Mr. Corkran was a lifelong member of Unity Washington United Methodist Church where he played the organ for many years.

He is survived by his sister, Sue C. Nishino of Hurlock; one aunt and many cousins and extended family.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the East New Market Cemetery with the Rev. Ruth Tull and the Rev. Lloyd R. Forad officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Unity Washngton United Methodist Church Piano Fund, P.O. Box 298, Hurlock, MD 21643 or to the Patricia Hopkins Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 216, Hurlock, MD 21643.

The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.

Albert F. Taylor

HURLOCK - Albert F. "Reds" Taylor, 70, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2003 at his home.

He was born June 15, 1932 in Cass, W. Va., son of the late Luther Mitchell Taylor and Cora Ann Higgins Taylor.

Mr. Taylor was a member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by one stepdaughter, Vicki O'Bier of Seaford; six brothers, Dale C. Taylor of Virginia, John M. Taylor of Seaford, Jimmy Taylor of Federalsburg, Jerry W. Taylor of Greenwood, Del., Howard Taylor of Federalsburg and Thomas Taylor of Montana; one sister, Rosalee Taylor of Baltimore and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Taylor who died on Dec. 24, 1999; and one brother, Norman R. Taylor.

Funeral services will be private.

The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.

Frank C. Jump

EASTON - Frank C. Jump, 74, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2003.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1929 in New Jersey, the son of the late Frank G. and Ruth Wise Jump.

A 1946 graduate of Easton High School, he served in the United States Army Medical Corps in Germany from 1951 to 1954. After his release from active duty, he became a part owner of Hurlock Lumber Co. until 1960. At that time he moved to Easton and took a position with the local tax assessment office until 1970. From 1970 until 1982 he worked for the Eley Lumber Co. in Queen Anne and then worked in real estate until retiring in 1994. Since his retirement he has been a Marshal at Hog Neck Golf Course.

A member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Easton, Mr. Jump was one of the first commentators and a former member of the church choir. He was also a member of Easton Elks Lodge 1622, where he served as Exalted Ruler from 1970 to 1971, the Knights of Columbus, a former member of the Hurlock Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Talbot County Election Board.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Mary Jo Gannon; four children, Ruth Drummer and her husband, Eric, F. Charles Jump Jr. and his wife, Lisa, Amanda Lyons and her husband, Jeff and Donald Jump and his wife, Donna; 11 grandchildren, and one step-grandchild, Joshua, Austin, Amanda, Kristen, Beth, Melissa, Emily, Gannon, Wendy, Melanie, Justine and Frank; and a brother, Francis W. Jump of Washington, N.C.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara A. Sayles, who died April 2,

1988.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, where an Elks Memorial Service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Easton. Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery, Easton.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 501 Dutchman's Lane, Easton, MD 21601 or to Easton Elks Lodge 1622, Easton, MD 21601.

Irelene V. Washington

BRIDGEVILLE, Del. - Irelene Virginia Sisco Washington, 57, known as "Pee Wee" died Thursday May 22, 2003 at her residence.

She was born on Nov. 29, 1945 in Easton, the daughter of the late Abraham Sisco and Catherine Irene Wilmer Sisco.

She attended Moton High School in Easton. She was a homemaker. As a child and into adulthood her home church was St. Matthews United Methodist Church at Longwoods. She was a club member of the Talbot Royals and a sister to the Thunderguards.

Mrs. WAshington is survived by her husband and companion of 24 years, Calvin Washington whom she referred to as "Puddin," also her stepfather, James M. Green of Easton, three stepchildren, Tracy Yvonne Batson of Delmar, Del., Calvin Batson of Federalsburg and Sherry Brununell of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren; a sister, Faye Delores Sisco of Easton; three brothers, Abe Sisco Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Trappe, Donald L. Sisco Sr. and his wife, Deborah of Easton, and James Howard Sisco of Easton, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, at St. Matthews United Methodist Church at Longwoods, with the Rev. William Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Federal Hill Cemetery in Federalsburg.

Friends may call at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Horne in Federalsburg from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday and an hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Serving as pallbearers will be Charmaine Sisco, James Sisco, Ronald Turner, Arthur Brummell, Bill Washington, and Ronald Gibson.

Delmas C. Davidson

CAMBRIDGE - Delmas C. Davidson, 96, of Cambridge, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center in Cambridge.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
