W. Nelson Brittingham Jr.
CAMBRIDGE - William Nelson Brittingham Jr., age 77, of Cambridge, died Friday, May 16, 2003.
Born on July 16, 1926 in Golden Hill, he was the son of the late William Nelson Brittingham, Sr. and Anita Abbott Brittingham.
Mr. Brittingham graduated from Cambridge High School, Class of 1942.
He worked in sales during his working career. He had worked for Penny's Department Store, was manager of Bata Shoe Store and worked also at Leggett Department Store, all of which were in Cambridge. For the past 30 years he had been employed by E.S. Hubbert & Son.
Mr. Brittingham was an avid reader. He also enjoyed fishing and bird carving.
Surviving is a daughter, Chris Wilke and her husband Joe of Secretary; a step-son William (Bill) Wright and his wife Annette of Connecticut; three brothers Edward (Toots) Brittingham of Church Creek, Allen Charles Brittingham and his wife Ann of Church Creek, George Brittingham and his wife Lily of East New Market; three sisters, Marie Mills of Madison, Frances Phillips of Salisbury, Mary Draper and her husband William of Salisbury; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by an extended family member and foster cousin, Jane Turner, at whose residence Mr. Brittingham had died.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was his former wife Marie Scharpf Brittingham; two sisters, Helen Brittingham, Ann Brittingham Mathias and her husband Earl; a brother, James Harold Brittingham and his wife Wilma Boyd; and a brother-in-law, Harvey Mills.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 510 N. Main St. in Hurlock. Officiating at the service will be Pastor David Stewart, a devoted friend for many years. A dinner will immediately follow the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to an organization in which the decedent's brother George is an active participant. It is a Christian non-profit organization made up of volunteers from the Dorchester County area whose goal is to show the love of Christ in serving people in need in our area. Rose L. Mckinney
CAMBRIDGE - Rose Lee Mckinney, 47, died Friday, May 9, 2003 at her residence in Cambridge. Born April 25, 1956 in Florida, she was the daughter of the late Rosa Opher.
After moving to Cambridge, she was educated in the public school system of Dorchester County. Over a period of years, she worked at many of the crab houses in the local area.
She is survived by a daughter, Rosalie; and a son, Joseph Mckinney, both of
Cambridge; a brother, Clarence Simms of Clinton; a sister, Shirley Simms of Cambridge; three nieces, Natasha Simms and DaShawdra Gantt, both of Cambridge and Tabitha Simms of Salisbury.
Graveside services for Ms. Mckinney were held Thursday at Malone Cemetery in Madison. Henry Funeral Home conducted services.
Michael J. Loftus
FEDERALSBURG - Michael Joseph Loftus died on Thursday, May 15, 2003 at his home in Federalsburg. He was 78 years old.
Born on Oct. 29, 1924 in Dallas, Texas, he was the son of the late Frank A. Loftus and Winfield McCamey, brother to Patricia McCamey and the late Frank Loftus.
Mr. Loftus served in the US Army during WWII as an engineer and was honorably discharged in November of 1944. After graduating in Dallas, he attended college at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and earned a degree in physics.
Throughout his career, he worked as a purchasing agent for Brunswick Corp., and locally with Maryland Plastics Inc. and Tri-Gas & Oil Co., Inc.
Mr. Loftus retired as a grant administrator with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 1990 after 11 years.
He was an avid musician, playing clarinet and his bass fiddle with such organizations as the Coral Mummers String Band, the Salaam Shriners' string band of Livingston, N.J., and Avalon String Band in Philadelphia, Pa. Locally he played in the Salisbury Community Players Orchestra, Dover Symphony Orchestra, and his own dance band "Old Gold." He was a member of Salaam Shriners, and a choir member with Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg.
In addition to his wife of 44 years, Dee Loftus, he is survived by four children, Michael A. Loftus of St. Paul, Minn., Mani A. Guesfeird of Federalsburg, Tony E. Loftus of Little Rock, Ark. and Kelly D. Loftus of Federalsburg; six grandchildren, Whitney Loftus, Tyler Loftus, Tabatha Guesfeird, Zachary Guesfeird, Josh and Abigail Loftus.
A Memorial service will be held on Wednesday at Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shore Home Care Hospice 29515 Canvasback Drive, Easton, MD 21801 or the Shriners' Children's Hospital c/o Salaam Shriners' 369 E. Patricia I. Gray
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Patricia Inez Qualls Ajagunna Gray, 59, died May 30, 2002 at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. following an automobile accident. She was a long-time resident of Easton and a Spanish teacher in the Dorchester County Public School System.
She was born Patricia Inez Qualls in New York City, N.Y. on Feb. 24, 1942.
A 1959 graduate of Hackensack High School in Hackensack, N.J., she attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on a full scholarship. There she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963.
She received a Master of Arts degree in foreign language at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont in 1968. She pursued additional graduate studies at Ionia College, Temple University, University of Maryland of Baltimore County, Salisbury State University, and was a Quinto Centenario Fellow at the University of Madrid in Spain in 1989.
Her first teaching job was in Woodstown, N. J. She also taught in Elmont, N. Y. and returned to Philadelphia where she taught French and Spanish in West Philadelphia High School.
After moving to the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her daughter Anike she embarked on her next career challenge with Dorchester County Public Schools in 1972. She taught at Cambridge High School and Cambridge-South Dorchester High School and served as Foreign Language Department Chairperson.
She led students in academic enrichment trips to Spain and Mexico and she served as a faculty adviser to the American Field Service student organization during the 1970s. She retired from the school district in 1997.
She was a member of the Dorchester Educators, the Maryland State Teachers' Association and the National Education Association. She was a member of the Cambridge Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. since April, 1977.
She has been honored in the past by being included in Who's Who Among America's Outstanding Teachers.
She had been a court interpreter in the Talbot, Caroline and Dorchester County judiciary systems, a tax preparer, a grief counselor and led the lay ministry at her church for the divorced, separated and widowed.
She was a member of Scott's United Methodist Church in Trappe Maryland.
She is survived by her daughter, Anike Ajagunna of Washington, D.C., her mother, Elizabeth Qualls of Jamaica, New York, and great aunt Jeannie Mae Hemphill of Seat Pleasant.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School with the Rev. Joseph Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise Cemetery in Trappe at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations and condolence cards be sent to the Patricia Gray Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1995 New York, NY 10185. The Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Dean F. Dodson
WESTMINSTER - Dean F. Dodson, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at his home in Westminster on Thursday, May 31, 2001. He was 45.
He was born in Cambridge on Feb. 20, 1956 and was the son of Joanne Vaughn Dodson and Freddie Dodson.
He attended public schools in Cambridge and had worked as a bricklayer for a number of years. Mr. Dodson had made his home in Westminster for the past year.
He had been in failing health for several years when he passed away on Thursday morning.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Sautter Dodson; two daughters, Kasie Dodson and Katie Dodson; one stepson, Kevin Fitzgerald, all of Willards; his mother, Joanne Dodson of Cambridge and his father, Freddie Dodson of Secretary; one sister, Judy Lauck of Secretary; one brother, Kenneth Blake Dodson of East New Market; three nieces, Angie Lauck, Melissa Ann Dodson and Nicole Dodson; three special friends, Linda Bixler, Gene Null and Kirk Brandt; and several aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Dana J. Dodson.
A funeral service will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. David Wooten officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Lauck, Chad Cheesman, Jason Abbott, Mac Thomas, Mike Nichols, Kenny Burns and Mickey Laird.
John H. Channell
BERLIN - John H. Channell, 82, of Pittsville, passed away on Thursday morning, May 31, 2001 at the Berlin Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Patricia Bradley Channell.
He was born in Baltimore on July 29, 1918, the son of the late Harold and Regina Sherman Channell. He attended public schools in Baltimore and graduated from Landon High School in Bethesda.
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from July 1944 to Feb. 1946. While in the Army he served in Europe and was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
For most of his life, he lived on the Eastern Shore. While living in Easton, Mr. Channell was a member of the Maryland State Police and he later became a roofing contractor. He retired as a salesman for Universal Liquors.
Mr. Channell was an avid horse racing fan for many years.
In the early 1960s, he married the former Pat Bradley and until 1981 he lived in Cambridge. In 1981 the Channells moved to the Lower Shore, where Mrs. Channell passed away in October 1998.
Mr. Channell is survived by three sons, William Channell of State College, Penn., Patrick G. Channell of Pittsville and Michael B. Channell of Berlin; two daughters, Rozanne Hemphill of Bishopville and Sherry Haddaway of Poolesville; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Dillworth and a son, John G. Channell.
A mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church in Cambridge at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will take place at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Thomas Funeral Home tonight from 7:30 to 9.
Virginia B. Gore
CAMBRIDGE - Virginia B. Gore, of Cambridge, passed away at Dorchester General Hospital on Saturday, June 2, 2001. She was 86.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
Janice N. Truitt
SALISBURY - Janice N. Truitt, 82, of Mardela Springs, passed away at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center early Friday morning, June 6, 2003. She was the wife of the late Charles Lewis Truitt.
She was born in Cambridge on Oct. 22, 1920, the daughter of the late William Oscar and Anna Bradley Hurley. She was raised in Dorchester County and was a Cambridge High School graduate.
She married Mr. Truitt on Oct. 1, 1936 and in 1942 the Truitts moved to the Hamilton area of Baltimore. In December of 1976 they moved to Mardela Springs, where Mr. Truitt passed away on Oct. 18, 1977. Mrs. Truitt attended the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
She is survived by three sons, Lewis B. Truitt of Salisbury, Charles L. Truitt of Mardela Springs, and John Wesley Truitt and his wife Trish of Hebron; 13 grandchildren, Lewis B. Truitt III, Patrick E. Truitt, David S. Truitt, Charles Lewis Truitt II, Torey N. Truitt, Anna C. Truitt, John Wesley Truitt Jr., Terrie Hammond, Carol Schirner, Bonnie Kiser, Amber Blackmire, Courtney Blackmire, and Jared Blackmire; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Nickerson of Salisbury, and Norma Parker of Cambridge; a daughter-in-law Elizabeth Truitt; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Truitt was preceded in death by a son, William C. Truitt; a sister, Billie Anne Smith; and her step-mother, Myrtle Hurley.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge on Tuesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Ike Ledger. Burial will take place in the Mardela Cemetery. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Tuesday during the hour before the service.
Pall bearers will be Lewis B. Truitt III, Patrick E. Truitt, Charles Lewis Truitt II, Torey N. Truitt, Jared J. Blackmire, and Raymond L. Foxwell.
Daniel L. Brooks
MADISON - Daniel L. "Danny" Brooks, 33, of Madison, passed away at his home on Saturday June 7, 2003. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. David Wooten officiating.

Gertrude E. Adams
FEDERALSBURG - Gertrude Eberhard Adams of Federalsburg died at Seaford Genesis Center in Seaford, Del. on Saturday, June 7, 2003. She was 82.
She was born on Feb. 12, 1921 in Cordova, the daughter of the late George Eberhard Sr. and Rosalina Plugge Eberhard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Herman F. Adams Jr. who died on Oct. 8, 1995.
She had worked at Federal Sportswear and Bell's Cutrite. She attended Christ United Methodist Church in Federalsburg and was a member of the Philathea Circle.
She is survived by two sons, George H. "Bunk" Adams, and his wife Dottie of Seaford, Del., and Frank M. Adams and his wife Margie of Federalsburg; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Dorothea Schreppler of Middletown, Del.; a brother, George Eberhard Jr. of Pinellas Park, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Junior Order Cemetery in Preston. Friends may call on Tuesday at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m.
Edward Sidrud-Din Shakoor
CAMBRIDGE - Edward Sidrud-Din Shakoor, 86, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2003 at Dorchester General Hospital.
Born Edward Arthur Bass on May 26, 1917 in Farmville, Va., he was the son of the late Lewes William and Pauline Crisemon Bass.
Mr. Shakoor was the first minister of the Nation of Islam on the Eastern Shore of Maryland from the early 1950s until 1975 under the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.
Mr. Shakoor retired from E.I. Dupont in Seaford, Del., where he worked for 25 years.
He married Gertrude Leola Watson in 1939 and to that union were born Edward Jr., Carol Ann and Marcia Phyllis.
In 1947, he married the late Myrtle Frances Pinder and to that union were born Wali, Deborah Louise, Mikal, Lemuel and Salimah.
Mr. Shakoor was involved in many community projects including The Harriet Tubman Coalition. He also wrote a book honoring his father's legacy.
He was also well versed in poetry and wrote many poems.
In 1999, he married Mildred Brown, who called him "Eddie".
Mr. Shakoor is survived by his wife, Mildred; eight children, Edward Bass Jr., Carol Ann Saunders and her husband Frederick, Wali Bass and his companion Shiree, Deborah Walker and her husband Avery, Mikal Shakoor, Lemuel Shakoor, and Salimah Rasin and her husband Keith; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Lester Bass and his wife Eva, Christopher Bass and his wife Lori, Harry Bass and his wife Shirley and Albert Bass and his wife Delores; a sister-in-law, Rita Bass; cousins Richard Roans and his wife Kathleen and Leroy Crisemon and his wife Barbara and Mary Bass; and many other relative and good friends.
Two brothers, Wesley and Leon Bass, preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday 11 a.m. at the Henry Funeral Home. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the services.
Daniel Lee Brooks
CAMBRIDGE - Daniel Lee "Danny" Brooks, 33, passed away at his home on Saturday, June 7, 2003.
He was born Oct. 6, 1969 in Cambridge, the son of Joan Lynn Brooks.
Mr. Brooks had attended schools in Cambridge. Some years ago he had worked as a tile setter for Cambridge Tile Co.
He enjoyed fishing, as well as watching professional football.
Survivors include his mother of Preston; one daughter, Cherish Brooks; a special aunt, Linda Bradley and her husband, John Bradley of Cambridge; two brothers, Anthony Brooks of Cambridge and Jerry Bennett of Pennsylvania; one sister, Theresa Bloodsworth of Cambridge; a special cousin who was like a big brother, Kenny Brooks and his wife, Tammy Brooks of Cambridge and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and a special friend, Cindy Walker.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. David Wooten officiating. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday during the hour preceding the service.

Isaac McCray
CAMBRIDGE - Isaac "Mark" McCray passed away Saturday, June 7, 2003 at the Dorchester General Hospital.
