Becky Burton
CAMBRIDGE - Rebecca Ann Willey (Becky) Burton, 78, of Gypsy Hill Farm, died at her home Sunday evening, June 8, 2003.
Born on July 25, 1924 in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Harry Willey and Nora Lee Rose Willey.
On Jan. 13, 1946 she married William Ellsworth (Jack) Burton. He died on Dec. 29, 1996.
Becky, as she was affectionately known, worked with her husband. They owned a sawmill and pole peeler business, where they became one of the largest private landowners of timberland in Dorchester County. She assisted in the harness horse racing business, Gypsy Hill Farm, by overseeing the bookkeeping. Mrs. Burton was a multi-faceted businesswoman. She also assisted her husband in real estate and housing development. Mrs. Burton co-owned and managed Quality Inn Motel and Shoals Restaurant.
Mrs. Burton was a member of the Cambridge Yacht Club and former member of Quota International, Cambridge.
In her later years, she attended Beckwith United Methodist Church.
Surviving is a daughter, Bride Burton Miller and her husband, Skip of Morris Neck; two sons, Martin E. Burton and his wife, Emily of Delmar, MD, Gregory Burton and his wife, Charlene of Cambridge; six grandchildren, Dr. W. Lance Miller and his wife ,Trisha, Rebecca (Becky) Callahan and her husband, Rick, Brian E. Burton, Jason R. Burton, G. Shane Burton, Justin S. Burton; a great-grandson, Blaine Callahan; two great-granddaughters, Kayleigh Miller and Erin Miller and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband, was a sister, Ginny Stevens.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. M. Scott Conn and the Rev. Gloria S. Attix. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Rick Callahan, Brian Burton, Jason Burton, Shane Burton, Justin Burton, Lance Miller and Blaine Callahan.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Russell Smith, William Spicer, C. Lloyd (Tony) Robbins, Carlton Rowley and Harry Willis.

Leona P. Truitt
CAMBRIDGE - Leona Paul Truitt, 98, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001 at the Mallard Bay Care Center. She had been in failing health since last September and had been a resident at the center since September.
Mrs. Truitt was born Nov. 30, 1902 near Cambridge, the daughter of the late McKenny and Ida Hoge Paul.
Mrs. Truitt had attended schools in Cambridge, having graduated from Cambridge High School in 1921. She was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge, where she had sung in the choir for over 50 years and had participated in numerous activities of the women of the church.
Mrs. Truitt was a member of the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary and had been very active in the operation of the Robin Hood Shop for over 50 years.
On Oct. 5, 1942 she was married to John Whilson Truitt. He passed away on Aug. 18, 1975. Mrs. Truitt and her husband had been active in the local political arena for a number of years.
She had worked as a dental hygienist for Dr. P. P. Payne for 15 years. And later had worked at Frankel's and Carton's in Cambridge. She was a past president of the Business Women's Professional Club, as well as the Cambridge Woman's Club.
Mrs. Truitt is survived by a niece, Nancy Paul Taitt of Charleston, Ill.; two great-nieces, Katharine Ireland of Camp Hill, Pa. and Jennifer Ross of Perth, Australia; and one great-nephew, Joseph Taitt of Oakland, Calif.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Truitt was preceded in death by a brother, William McKenny Paul.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Nathaniel W. Pierce officiating. Burial will follow in Christ Episcopal Chuchyard.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home.

Evelyn S. Daly
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Evelyn Strock Daly, 72, died Thursday, June 7, 2001.
She was a native of Alabama and a graduate of Montevallo University and American University.
Mrs. Daly was a medical technician in Talbot County for many years. She was also a volunteer in various charities of Dorchester County.
Mrs. Daly is survived by her brother, Judson Strock of Sarasota, Fla.
Funeral services were private.
Ada R. North
EASTON - Ada R. North, 65, died Monday, June 11, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born Nov. 30, 1935 in Chestertown, daugther of the late George C. and Ada Slaughter Redman.
After graduating from Chestertown High School in 1952, she then attended McQueen Gibbs Willis School of Nursing in Easton and worked at Kent ueen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown.
On May 22, 1958 she married Willard M. North Jr. and they made their home in Easton. During her working years she was employed by the Talbot County School System, working at Easton High School in the cafeteria and at Memorial Hospital at Easton Central Supply until her retirement May 31 of this year.
Mrs. North was a member of the E.E. Streets VFW Memorial Post 5118 Ladies Auxiliary since 1989, she was also a member of the Ladies of the Elks Lodge 1622 where she had served two terms as president; Carroll's Addition Homemakers and International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. North is survived by two daughters, Renee A. North and Rochelle N. Haddaway, both of Easton; four brothers, Theodore Clarence Redman and George Carroll Redman, both of Chestertown, William Eugene Redman of Timonium and William Carl Redman of Chestertown; one sister, Margaret Louise Morris of Rock Hall; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters, Anna Laura Boulten in 1998, Mary Henrietta Joiner in 1988, Cecilia Elizabeth Morris in 1972, Georgeanna Josephine Brooks in 1970 and Lillian Catherine Sparks in 1960 and a brother, Howard Samuel Redman in 1984.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A. in Easton where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Dorothy A. Keene Ross
SALISBURY - Dorothy Adle (Dot) Keene Ross, 59, died on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Deer's Head Hospital Center.
She was born January 1, 1944, in Madison, the daughter of the late Robert R. Jones and Martha Keene.
Ms. Ross was educated in public schools in Dorchester County and worked for various factories throughout her life.
She married the late William C. Ross on February 11, 1967.
She was a faithful member of Malone United Methodist Church in Madison until it's closing. She then became a member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Harrisville. Dot was also a member of the singing and praying band.
Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and her husband, were two sisters, Gladys and Elizabeth.
She is survived by five children: a son, Charles William Keene Ross and daughters, Dora Ross Bernard, Dulcey Matthews Allen, D. Ruby Chase Melvin and Anquenette Cornish Brice; two brother, Johnny Keene of Madison and William Keene of Annapolis; two sisters in law, Dot Keene of Cambridge and Isabell Keene of Madison; a brother in law, Herbert James Hooper of Cambridge; six grandchildren, Ashley, Tiffany, Brice Jr, Christopher, Javon and Anika; five nieces, Ann Johnson, Mona Beasley, Cynthia Carter, Valarie Beasley and Diamond Keene; three nephews, Nathaniel Keene, Johnny Cornish and Herbert James Hooper Jr; five great nieces, LeQuia Hooper, Tiffany Keene, Deshawn Hooper, Lakeshia Hooper, Christy Keene; eleven great nephews, Marlo Hooper, Dionte Hooper, Daryl Hooper, Da-rel Keene, Otis Keene, Johnny Cornish Jr, Robert Beasley Jr, Mario Keene, Herbert James Hooper III, James Demby Jr and DJ Demby; three great grand nieces, JaZhana Butler, Paris Keene and Alizay Cornish; three great great nephews, Dionte Hooper Jr, Pierre Keene and KeShawn Hooper; Nora Lee Cornish, who was like a sister but her friend over 35 years, and other special people in her life were Katherine Marine, Gloria Jones, Merritt Demby , Nora Stanley and Berdina Ross, numerous other family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 25, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul UM Church in Harrisville. The Rev. Turham Potter will officiate. Interment will follow in Malone Cemetery. There will be a viewing one-hour prior to the services. The Henry Funeral Home, PA is handling the arrangements.
Joseph R. Cusick
Joseph R. Cusick, 78, passed away on Saturday June 21, 2003, at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Our Shepherd Lutheran Church on Race Street with the Rev. Adam Kagel officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Thomas Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, P.O. Thelma J. McCullick
MARIETTA, Ga. - Thelma J. Bradshaw McCullick, 81, died on Friday, June 20, 2003 in Marietta.
She was born March 8, 1922 in Dorchester County, the daughter of the late Noble F. and Daisy H. Hurley Bradshaw. She was the last of 14 siblings.
Mrs. McCullick retired from work with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.
She is survived by her current husband, Derald D. McCullick whom she married on Feb. 14, 1988; one daughter, Thelma LaVonne Ikenberry of Northglenn, Colo.; one granddaughter, Teresa L. and her husband, M/Sgt. James Gibbons, stationed in England; one grandson, Sean P. Ikenberry of Nantucket Island, Mass. and two great-grandsons, Kameron M. Ikenberry and Kristian M. Ikenberry of Marietta, Ga. She is also survived by her first husband, Clayton F. Mills of Meridian, Miss. There are 19 of the 20 nieces and nephews surviving from the Bradshaw family.
Mrs. McCullick was preceded in death by her mother and father; her second husband, Peter Hart, who died on Aug. 31, 1979; four sisters, Mildred E. Abbott of Cambridge, Ethel M. Condon of Baltimore, Helen G. Maxwell of Baltimore, Gladys L. Boatwright of Arlington, Va.; and nine brothers, Julian M., David F., Everett E., Roy B., Noble L., Elmer W., Philip L., James M. of Dorchester County and Richard S. Bradshaw of Have de Grace.
The family will receive friends at the Woodstock Funeral Home in Woodstock, Ga. from 6 to 9 tonight for viewing. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Marietta, Ga.
Jane C. Ousley
GREELEY, Colo. - Jane Carlon-Cox Ousley, 84, died Sunday, May 24, 2003 at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado inpatient unit in Greeley.
She was born May 24, 1919 to Wesley Burns and Margaret Dodds in New Castle, Pa., where she lived until 1925. When her mother remarried, they moved to Baltimore. She was adopted by her stepfather, Loyal Deloss Carlon, violinst and teacher at the Peabody. Her future dedication to music and teaching began with the exposure from a home filled with music. Ms. Ousley had a successful career as a professional musician, singer and violaist, as well as a music educator.
She attended Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore and received her teaching certificate in voice and piano. At Johns Hopkins University her B.S. was earned in English writing, speech and drama with post-graduate work in psychology.
In June 1941 she married Joseph Webster Cox. Mr. Cox died in 1966.
In the early 1970s she moved to Greeley, Colo. and completed a masters, then doctorate in special education at the University of Northern Colorado in 1974. Dr. Cox was then employed as a Field Coordinator in the Educational Field Experiences Department at UNC.
In June 1975, she married Dr. James C. Ousley.
Dr. Cox eventually became Director of the Graduate Internship Program at UNC. She retired from that position in 1988. For many years following her retirement she volunteered in the Right to Read Program as a reading tutor for adult learners and students of English as a second language. She earned the "Tutor of the Year" award several years before she became ill.
Survivors are her husband; a sister, Kathryn Carlon Holdt of Cambridge; a brother, Loyal Carlon Jr. of Prescott, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
No services are scheduled at her request.
Herbie E. Cusick
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Herbie Elmer Cusick, 79, died Sunday afternoon, June 22, 2003 at the Huntsville Hospital.
He was born Jan. 3, 1924 in Golden Hill, the son of the late Edgar Charles and Grace Marie Gootee Cusick.
Mr. Cusick was a disabled veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart. While living in Wilmington, Del., he was the past commander of DAV, Caesar Rodney Chapter three.
His years of employment as an accountant with Chrysler Corp. took him to Wilmington, Del., Slidell, La., St. Louis, Mo. and finally Huntsville, Ala. After his retirement from Chrysler, he was employed at Control Dynamics for over 10 years. Finding it difficult to fully retire, he formed his own tax and accounting office, "Quality Tax."
Mr. Cusick was a past president of Institute of Management Accountants. His volunteer duties included serving as treasurer of Valley UMC for many years.
On April 26, 1947 he married the former Virginia E. Baird. They were the parents of five daughters and one son and grandparents of 21.
Besides his wife of 56 years, Mr. Cusick is survived by three brothers, C. Maurice Cusick, Clinton J. Cusick and Robert W. Cusick and two sisters, Helen M. Travers and Norma Lee M. Cusick, all of Maryland. He is also survived by his daughters and husbands, Valerie and Brian Westfall, Sharon and Robert Hempler, Deborah and Art Lampe, Beverly and Perry Johnson and Denise and Gene Woodson and son and wife, Wayne and Lucy Cusick. His grandchildren include: David Cox; Emily, Ellen, Erin, Eyan and Erica Hempler; Matthew and Stephen Lampe; Elissa Loesekam and husband, Gregory; Rachel, Noah, Daniel, John, Paul and Sarah Johnson; Joshua and Jessica Cusick; Keith, Kyle and Kendal Wooden and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. The funeral service will be held at the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shore at 1 p.m. on Friday with the Rev. Chris Pennington officiating.
Active pallbearers will be David Cox, Dennis Cusick, Gary Cusick, Greg Cusick, Lynn Cusick and Gene Travers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Valley UMC Building Fund, 1410 Drake Ave., Huntsville, AL 35802.
William W. Cromwell
SALISBURY - William Watson "Cornbread" Cromwell, 89, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2003 at the Salisbury Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (Genesis Elder-Care).
He was born Jan. 26, 1914 in Cambridge, the son of the late Columbus and Lena Burroughs Cromwell.
In his youth, Mr. Cromwell attended Waugh United Methodist Church with his sister, the late Tillie Cromwell Bosley and their aunt, Mary Wells. He received his formal education in the public schools of Cambridge.
As a young man, he earned the nickname "Cornbread" from his family and friends. Another love of his was the game of basketball. He could be seen shooting hoops with the Big Five.
Though a native of Cambridge, Mr. Cromwell moved to Philadelphia, Pa. He worked as hunting lodge cook before becoming a porter at the Schubert Theater. He spent the rest of his life with his wife and best friend, Elsie Smith Cromwell, a native of Bentleyville, Wash. She preceded him in death on Sept. 21, 2002. Illness brought him back to the Eastern Shore.
Mr. Cromwell is survived by four nieces, Lena Cromwell Whitfield of Indianapolis, Ind., Phyllis Johnson, Sandra Travers and Lois Bosley, all of Cambridge; one nephew, William Bosley of Baltimore; six great-nephews, Mark, Larry, Jason, Nathaniel, Steven and Sabri; two great-nieces, Sheneka and LaShona and a number of other relatives.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge where friends may call from 7 to 9 tonight. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery in Cambridge.
Vextlor B. Johnson
CAMBRIDGE - Vextlor Brady Johnson, 84, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2003 at the Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
He was born Feb. 22, 1919 in Crapo, son of the late Edward and Julia Spicer Johnson.
Mr. Johnson attended the public schools in Dorchester County and was employed at the Dorchester County Roads Department until his retirement.
He was united in holy matrimony to Laura Ellen Keene. From this union, on son, Brady Johnson, was born.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Waugh Chapel United Methodist Church. After becoming ill, "Beck" as so many family members and friends called him, remained faithful and continued to send his offering to the church to help wherever it was needed.
Besides his wife, Mr. Johnson's survivors include a son, Brady and grandson, Brady Vextlor Johnson (BJ); numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; his in-laws, Isaac Keene, Edna Watkins, Evelyn Scott, Elaine Stanley and Romana Jones and special friends, Frank Dickerson and Orvelle Jenkins.
He was preceded in death by James (Exie) Johnson, Hezekiah, Wesley, Roland and Arthur Gray and sisters, Julia Seymore, Lelia McCready, Pauline Cornish, Mabel Neal, Ella Mae Irving and Ollie Keene.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Waugh Chapel UM Church with the Rev. William T. Wallace Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Waugh Church Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Lillian E. Charvat
EASTON - Lillian Elizabeth Charvat, 74, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at Talbot Hospice House in Easton after a long illness.
She was born Jan. 8, 1929 in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Stephen Fuka and Elizabeth Pospisil Fuka.
She was a graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame in Baltimore. Mrs. Charvat and her husband moved to Cambridge in 1995 and then to Easton in 1999. She was employed at Dorchester General Hospital during the early 1990s.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Joseph F. Charvat; her children, David and Darlene Charvat of Ocean Pines, Joseph S. and Katharine Charvat of Silver Spring, Debbie and Doug Hinkle of Cambridge and Steve Charvat of Greensboro; six grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial mass will be celebrated 1 p.m. on Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Secretary. The Rev. Anthony Greco will be the celebrant.

Allen Cephas Jr.
BALTIMORE - Allen Cephas Jr., 61, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2003 after a short illness.
He was born Aug. 10, 1941 in Cambridge, the son of Aline Cephas and the late Allen Cephas Sr.
Mr. Cephas attended schools in Dorchester County and graduated from Mace's Lane High School in Cambridge. After graduation h e married his high school sweetheart, Portia Kane. From this union five sons were born, two of which preceded him in death. After their divorce, he moved to Baltimore, where he later met and married, Bernice.
Mr. Cephas, who was known as "Alco," had a variety of jobs, including construction, cashier and laborer. At the time of his death, he was employed at Martin's at the Preston Room and the Greek Orthodox Church.
Besides his mother of Cambridge and wife of Baltimore, Mr. Cephas is survived by three sons, Robert, Anthony and Agra Cephas, of Baltimore; a sister, Doretta Cephas of Chester, Pa.; one stepdaughter, Yolanda; nine grandchildren; a mother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; three nieces; great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts and a number of other relatives.
A funeral service was held at 6:30 p.m. June 23 at March Funeral Home (East) in Baltimore. Burial was private.
