Ruth Ann M. Nichols

EASTON - Ruth Ann McCollister Nichols, 55, of Green Point Road near East New Market, passed away at the Genesis Elder Care - The Pines in Easton on Monday, July 14, 2003. She was the wife of James B. Nichols.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Marian H. Elzey

EASTON - Marian H. Elzey, 70, of Cambridge, passed away at the Talbot Hospice House in Easton on Monday, July 14, 2003. She was the wife of Samuel D. Elzey.

Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Leroy A. Morris

CAMBRIDGE - Leroy A. Morris, 85, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Dorchester General Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Marjorie T. Morris.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday during the hour preceding the service.

Charlotte G. Groff

SEMINOLE, Fla. - Charlotte G. Groff, 82, passed away at The Pines in Easton, on Tuesday night, July 1, 2003. She was the wife of the late A. Donald Groff.

She was born Sept. 24, 1920 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Glenn Stephen and Ruth Thomas Gilliss. She was raised in Cambridge and was a 1937 graduate of Cambridge High School.

Mrs. Groff was married to Howard M. Sherman Jr. in 1939 and resided in Cambridge until 1954. In 1956 she was married to Arthur Donald Groff with whom she traveled extensively and resided in several locations overseas until retiring to the St. Petersburg, Fla. area in 1969. They later spent two years RVing across the U.S. before moving to Leesburg, Fla. in 1991. Widowed in October of 1999, she moved to Seminole, Fla. and resided with her son, Art.

Mrs. Groff is survived by one brother, William G. Gilliss of Catonsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Dennis Aldridge of Elkridge; three sons, Howard M. Sherman III of Venice, Fla., Donald D. and his wife, Willamae Meredith Sherman of Salisbury and Arthur D. and his wife, Sheila Groff of Seminole, Fla.; six grandchildren, Howard M. Sherman IV, Andrew R. Sherman, Kerry M. Sherman, David S. Sherman, Arthur Cooper Groff and Cale Raymond Groff; two stepgrandchildren, Colin Aldridge and Jill A. Yamaner; six great-grandchildren, Morgan, Joshua, Danielle, Alexis and Dawson Sherman and Bethany Anne Yamaner.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles G. Kettlewell. Burial will take place in the Christ Church Graveyard. Friends will be received at the funeral home Saturday during the hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 213 W. Main St., #205, Salisbury, MD 21801-4871.

Samuel E. Robinson

BISHOPS HEAD - Samuel Edgar Robinson, 71, died at his home, Wednesday morning, July 2, 2003.

He was born Oct. 20, 1931 at Bishops Head, the son of the late Theodosia Robinson.

On Dec. 19, 1959 he married the former Marie Gray. She died on April 5, 1991. On Sept. 28, 1996 he married the former Barbara Fitzhugh.

Mr. Robinson was a waterman and enjoyed his work. He liked the outdoors and used to hunt. He loved being with his family.

He was a member of Souls Harbor Church of God in Cambridge and served on the Church and Pastors Council.

Surviving besides his wife of six years is a daughter, Donna Marie Martin and her husband, the Rev. Robert D. Martin of Woolford; three sons, Tim Michael Robinson and his wife, Susan of Crocheron, Thomas Mark Robinson and his wife, Tammy, Matthew Samuel Robinson, all of Bishops Head; three stepchildren, Rhonda Mitchell of Cambridge, Brian Fitzhugh and his wife, Vicki of Dover, Del., Jamie Fitzhugh and his wife, Jenny of Woolford; a sister, Peggy Bradford and her husband, Bradley of Lakesville; 11 grandchilden; six stepgrandchildren; two nephews, Randy Bradford and his wife, Linda, Dennis Bradford and his wife, Kathy, all of Cambridge and several cousins.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Souls Harbor Church of God, 718 Peachblossom Ave., Cambridge. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. J. Edward King, assisted by the deceased's son-in-law, the Rev. Robert D. Martin. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.

Expressions of sympathy may be made by sending flowers or making memorial offerings in Mr. Robinson's memory to Souls Harbor Church of God, P.O. Box 1147, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Wanda F. Farrare

SEAFORD, Del. - Wanda Faye Matthews Farrare, 45, died Monday, June 30, 2003 at the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital after a long illness.

She received her early education from Hurlock Elementary School, graduating in 1976 from North Dorchester High School.

She was employed as a patient services counselor working in various hospital including, Easton Memorial, Nanticoke Memorial and BeBe Medical Center. She was a member of Emmanuel Full Gospel Church in Seaford.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne Farrare of Seaford; a daughter, Jessica Robinson of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Lester Matthews of Hurlock and Larry Milligan of Virginia; one sister, Darlene Matthews of Cambridge; a mother-in-law, Odessa Farrare of Vienna; four brothers-in-law, Emerson Jones of Hurlock, Milbert Jones of Princess Anne, Dale Sampson of Vienna and Leon Malone of Seaford; five sisters-in-law, Regina, Diane, Rosalind, Roxanne and Barbara and a number of uncles, aunts and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Hurlock UM Church in Hurlock where friends may call from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery in Hurlock.

The Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury is handling the arrangements.

John C. Chase

TAYLORS ISLAND - John Conrad Chase, 67, died Friday, June 27, 2003 at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.

He was born April 5, 1936 in Pennsylvania, the son of the late John D. Chase and Elsie Abrums Chase.

Mr. Chase had been a carpenter and waterman.

Surviving is his wife, Mary D. Chase of Taylors Island; a daughter, Nancy Michelle Willey of Delaware; a stepson, David Allen Dail of Texas and five grandchildren.

Services will be held privately at a later date.

Arrangements are being handled by the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Evelyn Holley

CAMBRIDGE - Evelyn Holley, 82, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2003 in Dorchester General Hospital.

She was born Aug. 22, 1920.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at the Gethsemane Baptist Church, 3267-330 15th St., Newark, N.J., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Kenilworth, N.J.

Arrangements are being handled by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Joan L. W. Simmons

CAMBRIDGE - Joan Loretta Wongus Simmons, 59, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2003.

She was born Dec. 29, 1943 at Cambridge-Maryland Hospital, daughter of Nathaniel Wongus and the late Sarah Wongus Sampson. She was the second of two children.

Ms. Simmons earned her early education at Mace's Lane High School and graduated with the class of 1961. She attended Salisbury State College where she received a bachelor of arts degree. She also did further studies at the Philadelphia School of Nursing and received a degree as a Registered Nurse.

On Nov. 26, 1963 Ms. Simmons entered the U.S. Army where she spent three years. While in the service she obtained the rank of Sgt. E5(7). Upon being discharged from the military, Ms. Simmons continued her nursing at Eastern Shore State Hospital in Cambridge and retired from the Holly Center in Salisbury.

She was a long-term member of the Salem Mt. Pleasant Church in Salem. She served in various capacities including being vice president of the United Methodist Women.

Ms. Simmons is survived by her son, Gerard Simmons (Chico); her life partner, Cordell Burris and her brother, Gerald Wongus and numerous other relatives.

A viewing will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Salem Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, U.S. 50, Salem.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shore at Beulah.

Arrangements are being handled by the Calvin L. Williams Funeral Home in Baltimore.

Ernest M. Farrow

HURLOCK - Ernest McKinley Farrow, 99, passed away Monday, June 30, 2003 at the Dorchester General Hospital after a long illness. He had been a patient at Mallard Bay Nursing Home in Cambridge for 16 years.

Mr. Farrow was born July 8, 1903 in Church Creek, one of 11 children, born to the late James Albert Farrow Sr. and Janie Cornelis Farrow. He was nine days short of turning 100 years old.

He was educated in the Dorchester County School System. Mr. Farrow left Dorchester County to get a job in Baltimore. He worked at the Baltimore shipyards as a Stevedore Long Shoreman. There he met and married Anna Wilmer Farrow who preceded him in death.

Mr. Farrow attended church in Baltimore until his health failed. He returned home to Hurlock and attended his home church, the old Washington United Methodist Church. He was a firm supporter and glad when the churches merged and built a new church, now as Hurlock United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two brothers, Luther Farrow (Debbie) and James A. Farrow Jr. (Mary E.); a sister, Janie C. Adams (Melvin); a devoted niece, Ophelia Matthews and a devoted nephew, Schuster Farrow and a number of other nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Mr. Farrow was preceded in death by four sisters, Leola Fletcher (Milbourne), Nellie Allen (Ernest), Nona Dotson (Leon), Frances Sampson (Daniel); three brothers, Thomas H. Farrow (Juanita), Robert Farrow (Lillian) and Chester Farrow (Julia).

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Hurlock United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arthur George officiating. Burial will follow at Washington Cemetery in Hurlock. Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the service.

Arrangements are being handled by the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg.

Carrie T. Gates

EASTON - Carrie Taylor Gates, 78, retired Talbot County educator, died Monday, June 23, 2003 at her home in Easton.

She was born March 25, 1925 in Norristown, Pa., the daughter of the late William and Dimples Epps Taylor.

Mrs. Gates was educated in the public schools of Norristown, Pa. and was a 1944 graduate of Norristown High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan State University in 1948 and did graduate study at the University of Maryland, College Park and at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, Pa.

She was a home economics instructor in Talbot County for 30 years, first at the former Moron High School, and later at St. Michaels High School. She retired in 1979.

A member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Easton, she served on the Trustee Board and with the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Cambridge Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Blake-Blackston American Legion Auxiliary Unit 77, the Historical Society of Talbot County, the Board of Directors of Richards Memorial Park, the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the White Marsh Homemakers Club, the Talbot County Retired Teachers Association, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

She is survived by her husband, Chester S. Gates; a daughter, Karen Henson Bostick, of Bear, Del.; a stepdaughter, Anna Gates Johnson, of Baltimore; a brother, William Taylor, of Norristown, Pa.; six grandchildren, and a number of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held 1 p.m. June 27, 2003 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Easton. Burial is at Richards Memorial Park.

Bennie Smith Funeral Home of Easton handled the arrangements.

Philip R. Wanerus

LOVELAND, Colo. - Philip R. Wanerus, 80, died Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at McKee Medical Center.

He was born May 24, 1923 in Fairfield, Iowa, to Philip Edwin Wanerus and Ethel Frick Wanerus.

He married Florence Collins on July 2, 1949 in Cambridge, Md.

Mr. Wanerus was a corporal in the U.S. Army Air Forces. He entered the service Feb. 17, 1943 and was honorably discharged Feb. 28, 1946.

Mr. Wanerus was an FBI agent. After his retirement in 1977 from the FBI he worked as a private investigator. He was a member of the Former FBI Agents' Association.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed model railroading, sketching and calligraphy. He was an avid reader and news buff. Mr. Wanerus loved the mountains and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of Loveland; three daughters, Priscilla Wanerus and husband, Eric Hughes of Oakland, Calif., Jill Wanerus and husband, Keith Longwell of Fort Collins, Colo., and Wendi Higgins and husband, Ken of Greer, S.C.; son-in-law, Jeffrey Jones of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; and grandchildren, Justin Hughes and Gavin Hughes of Oakland, Calif., Zachary Wanerus and Alec Longwell of Fort Collins, Tara Higgins, Molly Higgins and Kelsey Higgins of Greer and Casey Jones and Noah Jones of Rancho Mirage, Calif.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Wanerus Jones and a sister, Adrienne Smith.

Funeral services were held June 14 at the Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Trudy Robinson officiating. Burial followed at Loveland Burial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in care of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home, 1102 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80537.

Franklin O. Unverzagt

CAMBRIDGE - Franklin 0. Unverzagt, 85, of Hurlock, passed away at the Mallard Bay Care Center early Friday morning, June 27, 2003. He was the husband of the late Mary Thomas Unverzagt.

He was born in Baltimore on Nov. 9, 1917, the son of the late Albert Unverzagt and Sophie Walters. From the age of 12, he was raised by the late Alan and Ada Christopher.

He was a life-long farmer, who owned and operated his farm near Hurlock. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Military Police Officer.

In December of 1952, he married Mary Thomas, who passed away in November of 1977. He was a past member of American Legion Post 243 in Hurlock.

He is survived by three daughters, Daisy Werkheiser of Delmar, Md., Mary Ann Schultz and Linda L. Willey, both of Hurlock; two grandchildren, Mandi L. Schultz of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Ryan Schultz, serving with the U.S. Navy on Diego Garcia.

A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. by Chaplain Dave Suitscher. Burial will take place at East New Market Cemetery.

Friends will be received by the family one hour before the service. Memorials may be made to The American Parkinson's Disease Association. 4049 Oakland School Road, Salisbury, MD 21804 and the Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 178, Hurlock, MD 21643.

James H. Dukes

BALTIMORE - James Herman Dukes, 59, of Baltimore and formerly of Cambridge, passed away Thursday evening, June 26, 2003, at the Joseph Richey Hospice in Baltimore.

He was born in Cambridge on April 3, 1944, the son of Edna Mills and Herman Dukes, both deceased. He was raised and educated in Cambridge and later moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked in the early 1960s.

Later he worked in Baltimore at Locke Insulators, from which he retired.

He is survived by two brothers, William A. Todd and Jackson R. Todd, both of Cambridge; two nieces, Donna T. Luce of Virginia and Seretha T. Dawson of Cambridge; a nephew, David Todd; a cousin, Rudy Aaron, of Cambridge; several cousins from Delaware; and two close friends, Stephanie Sykes and Angel Johnson, both of Baltimore.

His wish was that his body be donated to science.

Memorials can be made to Joseph Richey Hospice, 828 N. Eutaw St., Baltimore, MD 21201, c/o Catherine Hawtin, admissions director.

Hilda B. Tall

CAMBRIDGE - Hilda B. Tall, 85, of Cambridge, passed away at her home early Friday morning, June 27, 2003. She was the wife of the late Webster R. "Webb" Tall.

She was born in Cambridge on March 2, 1918, the daughter of the late John T. and Laura Rasche Bailey. She was raised in Cambridge and was a 1937 graduate of Cambridge High School.

As a young woman, she worked for 13 years at the Skinner Wholesale Grocery Co. and then entered the employ of the Farmers and Merchants National Bank. Mrs. Tall later became assistant vice president of the local bank. When the bank was bought by First National Bank she served as branch officer, until retiring in 1982.

On Dec. 11, 1937 she married Mr. Tall, who passed away on Aug. 5, 1971.

Mrs. Tall was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for more than 60 years, serving on the board of trustees and as treasurer of the D.D. Club. She was also a member and volunteer in the local A.A.R.P. Chapter 1278, a charter member of the Cambridge Quota Club, and a supporter and Friend of the Pleasant Day Adult Medical Day Care Center.

She is survived by two cousins; Jackie Jones Vickers of Cambridge, whom she raised as a daughter with her husband Webb; and close lifelong friends, Walter "Shots" and Evelyn Tanner. She was preceded in death by a brother, J. Mace Bailey.

A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley at Dorchester Memorial Park on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. There will be no calling hours. Memorials may be made to Grace U.M. Church, 501 Race St., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Howard Shorter III

ROMNEY, W.V. - Howard Shorter III, 51, died Saturday morning, June 28, 2003 at the Hampshire Memorial Hospital in Romney, W.V. He was born in Cambridge on Nov. 16, 1951, son of Lorraine Burton Short and the late Howard Shorter Jr., who died in February of 1972.

Mr. Shorter was a 1969 graduate of Cambridge High School. For many years, he was employed with the town of Hurlock.

He worked briefly with Allen Foods until moving to Augusta, W.V. After moving to Augusta, Mr. Shorter was employed with P.V.T.A. Transportation in Romney.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and he was an avid NASCAR fan. He was a past member of Hurlock American Legion Post 243 and a past member of Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Brown Shorter of Augusta; a daughter, Shelly Cheesman of East New Market; two stepchildren, Ashlee and George Bratcher of Augusta; his mother, Lorraine Burton Short of Linkwood; three brothers, Luther Shorter and Ricky Shorter, both of Cambridge, and Dan Shorter of Hurlock; two grandchildren, Allison Pleasant and Ryan Cheesman, both of East New Market.

A funeral service will be held at Cambridge Wesleyan Church on Wednesday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Barry Miller. Family will receive friends one hour before the service.

Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in the name of Howard Shorter III, to the Thomas Funeral Home, PA, 700 Locust St. Cambridge, Maryland 21613.

Pallbearers are: Frank Wright, Steve Williams, Jeff Fletcher, Russell Stevens, Jason shorter, and Jenson Shorter.

Suzanne L. Dyke

BALTIMORE: Suzanne Lynn Dyke, 57, of Hurlock, died Friday, June 27, 2003 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Born on April 14, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Charles Stokes and Nettie George Stokes of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Mrs. Dyke was co-owner of HobbyTown USA in Easton. She loved animals and especially enjoyed riding horses and working in her garden.

She is survived by her husband, J. William Dyke of Hurlock; one son, Donald William Dyke of Bethany, Del.; two daughters, Samantha Lynn Ketchersit of Euless, Texas and Carol Ann Dyke of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Andrew and Tabitha McGlatlin; and two step-grandchildren, Kyle and Candice Ketchersit.

A memorial service will be held today at 7:30 p.m. at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market, with the Rev. Nathaniel Pierce officiating. Friends may call from 7-7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland, 1107 Kenilworth Drive, Suite 202, Baltimore, MD 21204.

Daniel L. White

HURLOCK - Daniel Lee White, 73, died Wednesday, July 2, 2003 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.

He was born Dec. 9, 1929 in Laurel, Del., the son of the late Marion White and Sally Mae Magee White. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Jo-Anne White, on March 28, 2003.

Mr. White was a member of the National Guard for six years. He worked for the Town of Hurlock for over 20 years. He was a social member of the V.F.W. Post 5246 in Federalsburg and a member of the Eastern Shore Hunting Club.

He is survived by five children, Michael Lee White, Steve Curtis White, Alan Clayton White, all of Hurlock, Jo-Ellen White Sampson of Trappe, and Jack Richard White of Princess Anne; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Burton White of Bridgeville, Alvin White of Laurel; four sisters, Lois Smith, June Powell, and Anne Figgs, all of Laurel, and Joyce Dulin of Easton, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, at 1 p.m. at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg with the Rev. Derwin Lowe officiating. Burial will follow at Bloomery Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Sunday.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Bradford, William McGlaughlin, Wylie Abbott Sr. and Wallace Pritchett.

In addition to the survivors listed in the paper, Mr. Robinson is survived by several nieces and nephews.
