MILDRED M. PHILLIPS
Mildred May Phillips, 94, Frostburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
Born May 13, 1905, in Rockwood, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Belinda (Boyer) Miller. She was also preceded in death by her husband, C. Victor Phillips; four grandsons; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, the ladies guild of the church, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, J. Robert Phillips, Keyser, W.Va., and James Phillips, Wexford, Pa.; two daughters, Dottie George, Grantsville, and Irene Hady, Meyersdale, Pa.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted earlier today, Nov. 18, with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating. Interment was in the German Lutheran Cemetery, Frostburg.

DERECK A. DeWITT
Oakland Youth Dies Following Hunting Mishap
A 17-year-old Oakland youth died Saturday morning, apparently as a result of his own mishandling of a hunting rifle. The accident occurred in a wooded area off the 5200 block of Hutton Road west of Oakland.
Dereck Adam DeWitt, a resident of the 500 block of Garrett Road, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 9:50 a.m. incident, according to John Surrick, spokesman for Natural Resources Police, which was continuing to investigate the incident as of yesterday.
A senior at Southern High School, DeWitt was reportedly in the company of two other boys, ages 16 and 13, at the time of the incident, which occurred during Maryland’s annual Youth Deer Hunt Day. The firearm was described as a 30-30 rifle.
In addition to NRP, the Southern Garrett County Rescue Squad and the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. The State Medical Examiner’s Office conducted the autopsy.
Born Aug. 22, 1982, in Oakland, DeWitt was a son of Michael J. and Naomi (Weeks) DeWitt.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Michael A. DeWitt, Oakland; one half-sister, Kristy Lynn Meadows, Oakland; paternal grandparents, Maxwell and Gloria DeWitt, Oakland; and maternal grandparents, James and Lula Weeks, Oakland.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Tuesday, Nov. 16, with the Rev. Wally Weeks officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to the Southern Rescue Squad or the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department.
ETHEL M. BRAATEN
Ethel M. Braaten, 95, Tampa, Fla., formerly of Deep Creek Lake, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the Lakeshore Villas, Tampa.
Born March 21, 1904, in Uniontown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John P. and Ella M. (Herriss) Coffman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elester H. 'Les' Braaten, in 1978.
Surviving is one son, Larry L. Braaten, Tampa.
An interment service was conducted at the Garrett County Memorial Gardens chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 9, with the Rev. Mark Hickman officiating. Interment followed.
The Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, was in charge of arrangements.
PALMER D. RECKART
Palmer D. Reckart, 86, Hazelton, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., after a long illness.
Born Sept. 22, 1913, in Mountain Dale, he was the son of the late Charles and Electa (Rodeheaver) Reckart. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Phyliss Diana Reckart.
He was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was a member of the Mountain Dale Church of the Brethren, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, and a sharpshooter medal.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean (Romesburg) Reckart; two sons, Spencer A. Reckart and Larry E. 'Bob' Reckart, both of Bruceton Mills, W.Va.; two daughters, Carolyn Sue Wolfe and Connie Marie Nieman, both of Bruceton Mills; two sisters, Venora Umbel, Bruceton Mills, and Alletta Thomas, a resident of Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Carl R. Spear Funeral Home, Brandonville, W.Va., where a service was conducted Wednesday, Nov. 3, with the Rev. Dana Umbel officiating. Interment was in the Reckart Family Cemetery, Mountain Dale.
EVELYN BEULAH SHAWLEY
Evelyn Beulah Shawley, 77, Bittinger, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Feb. 24, 1922, in Bittinger, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Lucy (Bittinger) Oester. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Shawley; one brother, Everett Oester; and one sister, Freda Kellison.
She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Women of ELCA, and a former member of the Bittinger Homemakers Club.
Survivors include one son, George R. Shawley II, Bittinger; three daughters, Patricia Cowser, Bethel Park, Pa., and Karen Clevenger and Mary Schenk, both of Grantsville; 12 grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. A service was conducted Saturday, Nov. 6, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, with Vicar Douglas Knupp officiating. Interment was in the Bittinger Cemetery.
MALINDA F. DURST
Malinda F. Durst, 93, a resident of the Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing, formerly of Barton, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born Jan. 31, 1906, in Jennings, she was the daughter of the late Truman and Luvenia (Bittinger) Wilt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Herman Durst.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Lonaconing Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Mark Wilt, East Point, Mich., and Blaine Wilt, Bittinger; and one sister, Lucinda Bowser, Lonaconing.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Tuesday, Nov. 9, with the Rev. Donald Webb officiating. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Grantsville.
JESSIE F. HINEBAUGH
Jessie F. Hinebaugh, Rockville, formerly of Oakland, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at the National Lutheran Home, Rockville.
She was a former school teacher in Oakland, and a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Oakland.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Lou Behne, St. Leonard, and two grandsons.
A memorial service will be conducted at the National Lutheran Home chapel, 9701 Veirs Drive, Rockville, on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Tom White officiating. Visitation is set for 1 p.m. Interment will be private.

OHLEN P. UMBEL
Ohlen Paul 'Jerry' Umbel Sr., 83, Bruceton Mills, W.Va., died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at his home.
Born Aug. 12, 1916, in Hazelton, W.Va., he was a son of the late Clarence Richard and Manilla (Thomas) Umbel. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert E. Umbel, and one sister, Elizabeth H. Cupplo.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a member of the Sand Spring Church of God, and was a self-employed bricklayer and stonemason.
Survivors include his wife, Venora (Reckart) Umbel; four sons, Hugh Umbel, McHenry, Myron Cecil Umbel, New Market, Ohlen Paul Umbel Jr., Upper Marlboro, and Dale Umbel, Friendsville; one daughter, Betty Wampler, Friendsville; one sister, Leah Carleen Yaeckel, Chesapeake, Va.; 19 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

DAILY D. RICE
Daily D. Rice, 86, Lottsburg, Va., died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at the Meyersdale Manor Nursing Home, Meyersdale, Pa.
Born Dec. 1, 1911, in Avilton, she was a daughter of the late Delbert Lawrence and Mamie (Broadwater) Durst. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Vincent Rice; one sister, Gladys (Durst) Durst; and two brothers, Blaine Durst and Gideon Durst.
She was a homemaker and worked as a textile worker at the Celanese Corporation prior to its closing. She was a member of the American Legion auxiliary, Frostburg.
Survivors include one daughter, Sarah Green, Lottsburg; two brothers, Glenn Durst, Frostburg, and Paul Durst, Grantsville; two sisters, Vera Merrill, Grantsville, and Ruby Jenkins, Randallstown; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Sunday, Nov. 7, with the Rev. Fr. William Moody officiating. Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery.

ESTEL E. SAVILLE
Estel Edwin 'Bud' Saville, 90, Keyser, W.Va., and more recently a resident of the Moran Manor Nursing Home, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born May 25, 1909, in Westernport, he was a son of the late Philip Jacob and Nettie Mae (Shipe) Saville. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Loretta Saville, on Jan. 1, 1999, and by four brothers, three sisters, and one granddaughter. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He retired from the Outside Department of Westvaco Corporation in 1973. He was a member of the Piedmont (W.Va.) Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Glenda Braithwaite, Bloomington, and a great-grandson.
