Joseph Bromwell Jr.
CAMBRIDGE - Joseph Bromwell Jr., died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001 at his home.
He was born Nov. 24, 1923 in Dorchester County, the son of the late Nellie Bromwell and Joseph Bromwell Sr.
He was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County. Mr. Bromwell was employed at Maryland Tuna until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Bethel AME Church.
Mr. Bromwell is survived by five nieces - Gloria Sydnor, Marvel Deshields and Wanda Badger of Cambridge, Delisa Bromwell and Reene Camper of Philadelphia, Pa.; two nephews - Eugene Bromwell of Cambridge and Perry Bromwell Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; several great-nieces and nephews and a number of cousins.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Vrooma Johnson, Livonia Bromwell, Norma Lee Foster and Barbara Bromwell and one brother, Perry Bromwell.
Funeral services will be held noon today at Bethel AME Church with the Rev. Leon B. Hall officiating. There will be no viewing. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.
The Boardley Funeral Home in Cambridge is handling the arrangements.
Sarah Elliott Riley
WILMINGTON, Del. - Sarah Elliott Riley, the daughter of the late Howard and Rena Elliott, departed this life on Thursday, August 2, 2001, at her home. She was married to William Riley, who preceded her in death on July 29, 1994.
Mrs. Riley was born Aug. 11, 1937, in Cambridge. She received her early education in the public school system in Dorchester County, graduating from Mace's Lane High School in the class of 1956.
Mrs. Riley was employed at Delaware Law School and Brandywine College. She retired from the Layton Home for the Aging.
She was a faithful member of the Mother AUFCMP Church. She was president of the Missionary Society, member of the Senior Citizens' Ministry, Chancel Choir, Sanctuary Choir and a Communion Stewardess.
She was also a member of the Fifty-Voice Choir of Union Chapel A.M.E. Church in Cordtown.
Tootsie, as her family and friends so lovingly called her, loved her family, but most of all she loved the Lord. To know her was to love her.
She is survived by one son, Kevin Riley; one daughter, Onedra Roberts; one granddaughter, Nichole Riley; one great-grandson, Tah'Aire Riley, all of Wilmington, Del.; one sister, the Rev. Marvel Travis (Kenneth), of Cambridge; six brothers, Randolph Elliott (Doretha), of Annapolis; Embry Elliott (Barbara), of Upper Marlboro; Palestine Elliott (Mary), of Odenton; Leroy (Linda), Robert (Mary), and Frederick Elliott (Constance), all of Cambridge; two Goddaughters, Eugenia Roberts and Jonelle Monk, both of Wilmington, Del.; two aunts, Bessie Lee, of Cambridge and Louise Jolley, of East New Market; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest Elliott, Arthur "Dockie" Elliott and Howard Elliott Jr.; and three sisters, Dorena Powers, Cursell Wilson and Bertha Blake.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. at the Mother AUFCMP Church, 812 N. Franklin St., Wilmington, Del. The viewing for Mrs. Riley will be from 4-7 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at the Veterans' Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday. The Bell Funeral Home, Wilmington, Del., is handling arrangements.
Mortimer E. White
FEDERALSBURG - Mortimer Elwood White of Federalsburg died Friday, Aug. 3 at the LifeCare at Lofland Park. He was 91.
He was born on Feb. 13, 1910 in Federalsburg, the son of the late Thomas and Jane Bowman White. Mr. White was a dairy farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Frances A. Hulliger White of Federalsburg; two step-daughters, Barbara Lord of Federalsburg and Joyce Bennett of Laurel, Del.; five step-sons, Maurice Cecil of Centreville, Claude Cecil of Federalsburg, James Cecil of Laurel, Del., Richard Cecil of Virginia and Donald Cecil of Salisbury; 18 step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Handy of Seaford, Del.; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Frampton-Hawkins-Escow Funeral Home in Federalsburg. Burial will follow in Hill Crest Cemetery in Federalsburg.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
Sidney L. Mooney
RHODESDALE - Sidney Lee Mooney died at his home near Rhodesdale on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001. He was 74.
He was born on Nov. 20, 1926 at Secretary, the son of the late William R. Mooney Sr. and Gladys Saunders Mooney.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the US Navy from October of 1944, eventually serving on board the John R. Craig, before being discharged on Aug. 3, 1946.
He worked as an auto body technician and for many years worked for Shenton's Body Shop in Cambridge. He was a member of Federalsburg VFW post 5246 in Federalsburg.
He is survived by his wife, Alice "Dixie" Wheatley Mooney of Rhodesdale; five children, Sidney C. Mooney of Boise, Idaho; Joyce Mooney, Debra Lewandowski and Cathy Zickgraf, all of Wilmington, Del.; and Laura Mooney of Rhodesdale.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Wallace "Pete" Mooney of Secretary; two sisters, Rebecca Blake of Denton and Ellen Rickwood of East New Market; and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, William R. Mooney Jr. and a sister, Elva Warrell Paige, preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Mr. Mooney, including a service by Federalsburg VFW Post 5246, will be held commencing at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery in Hurlock.
Funeral services are under direction of Frampton-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A, located at 216 North Main Street in Federalsburg.
Helen G. Gaskins
VIENNA - Helen Gertrude Gaskins, 84, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001 at the Mallard Bay Rehabilitation Center in Cambridge.
She was born in Vienna, daughter of the late Fred Jackson Sr. and Bessie Morris Jackson. Her husband, Robert Gaskins, died in the late 1970s.
Before her retirement, Mrs. Gaskins was employed as a housekeeper in Towson and the surrounding areas.
Her survivors include a daughter, Goldie Gaskins of Vienna; six grandchildren - Sherita, Michell and William Gaskins and Patricia Sharp, all of Baltimore, Craig Seymour of Atlantic City, N.J. and Dietrick Gaskins of Cambridge; two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Marguerite Jones of Vienna, Catherine Waller of Mardela Springs; three brothers and their spouses - John and Mamie and Harold and Vivian Jones, all of Vienna, Orville and Marjorie Jackson of Salisbury; a daughter-in-law, Bettie Gaskins; three sisters-in-law, Vivian Jackson, Emily Jackson and Thelma Jackson.
She was preceded in death by a son, William Gaskins in 1988.
A funeral service will be held noon Thursday at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Vienna where friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Thursday. Burial will be in Zoar UM Church Cemetery in Reid's Grove.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Jolley Memorial Chapel in Salisbury.
Virginia H. Dyson
CAMBRIDGE - Virginia Hager Dyson, 85, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 at her home in Cambridge.
Her immediate survivors include a daughter, Mildred Wilson of Baltimore; three sisters, Elizabeth McCready and Edith Banks, both of Cambridge, Rhoda Rose of Baltimore; and a brother, Frederick Matthews of Baltimore.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The Henry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Mary R. Hurley
CAMBRIDGE - Mary R. Hurley, 75, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003 at her home. She had been in failing health for the past two years.
She was born Sept. 6, 1927 in Cambridge, a daughter of the late Russell and Mary Smith Rosetta.
She attended schools in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1944. On Sept. 8, 1945 she was married to Thomas H. Hurley. He passed away on June 3, 2003.
Mrs. Hurley had attended Chateau Church. For a number of years she had worked at Airpax in Cambridge.
Her survivors include three daughters, Linda Bloodsworth, Terry Hughes and Mary Ann Willey, all of Cambridge; one son, Thomas H. Hurley Jr. of Princess Anne; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Laura Willey of Cambridge and Doris Todd of East New Market; two brothers, Russell Rosetta Jr. of Delaware and Tony Rosetta of Taylors Island and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Ratcliffe and two sisters, Ruth Dunn and Judy Rue.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Pardee Bramble officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Robert Willey, Roland Travers, Thomas H. Hurley III, Aaron Hurley, Joey Bloodsworth and Anthony Hughes.
Hazel D. Kready
CAMBRIDGE - Hazel D. Kready, 79, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003 at her residence.
She was born Jan. 30, 1924 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Samuel R. and Mabel Westbrook Dunnock.
Mrs. Kready graduated from Cambridge High School. She received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Salisbury State Teacher's College and then she received her master's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.
On Aug. 5, 1953, she was married to John W. Kready, who passed away September of 1967.
Mrs. Kready was a teacher mainly in Maryland for 37 years, and served as vice principal at St. Clair and Maple Elementary Schools. After she retired, she was an assistant teacher at the Friendship Hall Cooking School.
Mrs. Kready was a volunteer at the Dorchester General Hospital up until January of this year. Some of her hobbies were, reading, gardening, golf, travel and quilting. She was a member of the Dorchester Retired Teachers' Association, AARP and a past member of the East New Market Heritage Foundation.
She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Ruark and her husband, Roy of Shiloh; two grandsons, Brett Ruark and his wife, Andrea of Lake City, Fla. and John Ruark of Shiloh; two cousins, Lydia Nichols and Grace Westbrook, both of Cambridge; and an uncle, Reginald Dunnock of Mardela Springs.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a cousin, Shirley Westbrook Brunner.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Pardee Bramble and the Rev. Douglas S. Albert officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Burial will follow in East New Market Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brett Ruark, John Ruark, Aaron Harmon, Craig Harmon, Phillip Nichols and Alan Bradshaw. Honorary pallbearers will be John Brunner, Willard Schuyler, Wendell Foxwell and Kenneth Moore.

Victory L. Wingate
CAMBRIDGE - Victor L. Wingate, 46, was pronounced dead Monday, Aug. 11, 2003 at his home.
He was born Nov. 27, 1956 in Cambridge, the son of the late Marvin James Wingate and Jacqueline Marie Bradford Wingate.
Mr. Wingate was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1974.
For many years he was a mechanic and had worked with his father at Wingate's Auto Service, Academy Street, Cambridge. In December of 1998, he worked for Wharton & Bernard of Easton. He later worked for Fischer Auto Parts in Easton and then Pritchett's Transportation in Cambridge. He had also worked with his cousin Charles of Moxey's Taxi Service in Cambridge.
Mr. Wingate was a devoted coach for many years with the Cambridge Little League. He was proud of being part of Little League, for he believed it nurtured children's growth and confidence to not only learn and enjoy baseball, but to prepare them in life. He was also a New York Yankees fan.
Surviving is a son, Shawn L. Wingate (Cpl. U.S. Marines) of Edward Air Force Base, Edwards, Calif. and his fiancé, Christie Robinson of Cambridge; a daughter, Victoria M. Wingate from the union of his former wife, Beth McClain Wilson, both of Rhodesdale. He is also survived by a sister, Wendy Wingate of Baltimore; a brother, Billy Wingate; cousins, Charles Moxey and his girlfriend, Penny Fitzhugh, Audrey Murphy, Betty Tall, a foster sister, Clara Bloodsworth, all of Cambridge and a foster brother, John Jenkins of Delaware.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was a son, Adam J. Wingate.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Dave Wooten. Inurnment will be held privately.

Harrison L. Hopkins Jr.
SEAFORD, Del. - Harrison LeRoy Hopkins Jr., 49, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
He was born on March 1, 1954 in Milford, Del. the son of Hattie Marie Ross Hopkins of Seaford and the late Harrison LeRoy Hopkins Sr.
He graduated from Seaford High School, class of 1972. He had been employed as an O.R. Technician for Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for over 18 years, and also employed by the State of Delaware as a foster care provider.
He was a member of Family Worship Center in Salisbury and but returned to the Clarence Street Church of God in Seaford.
Besides his mother, Hattie M.R. Hopkins, he is survived by his three children, Yolanda Inez Hopkins of Seaford, Demetrius Tot Jenkins of Smyrna, Cheryl Garrett of Fruitland; four grandchildren, Stephone W. B. Hopkins, Rodney S. Hopkins, both of Seaford, Brandon Garrett of Fruitland and La Myra Ross of Seaford; four brothers, Joseph P.T. Hopkins and his wife, Frances, Sylvester A. Hopkins, Arthur E. Hopkins and his wife, Lorianne and Kevin N. Hopkins, all of Seaford; two sisters, Veronica A. Hopkins of Seaford and Faith Ann Hopkins Beach and her husband, Nelson, of Laurel, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Aug. 18, at Family Worship Center in Salisbury with the Rev. Jessie E. C. Abbott officiating. Burial will follow at Macedonia Cemetery in Seaford, Del.
Friends may call at Clarence Street Church of God in Seaford on Sunday from 6-8 p.m.

Elizabeth V. Ghee
DOVER, Del. - Elizabeth V. Ghee, 79, passed away Monday, Aug. 11, 2003 in Kent General Hospital in Dover.
She was born May 11, 1925.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Dover, Del., where friends may call two hours prior to the service. Burial will be private.
Estella B. S. Williams
ORLANDO, Fla. - Estella Beatrice Seymour Williams, 47, formerly of Cambridge, passed away Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 in Orlando.
She was born Jan. 22, 1956 to the late Calvin and Mahalia Banks Seymour. During "Stumpy's" early life she attended the Dorchester County Public schools graduating with the class of 1974 from Cambridge High School. While attending Cambridge High School Ms. Williams sang with the Chorus and was selected to the All-County and State choruses. She sang with the UMES Chorus and was a member of the Workshop Choir of Dorchester County.
Mrs. Williams worshipped at Bethel AME Church and was a member of the Youth Choir and MYF. She worked with the youth at Bethel and would travel to various youth conferences along with the Rev. Morse and his wife, who was pastoring at Bethel during that time.
Mrs. Williams continued her education at the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore majoring in early childhood education. She graduated in 1978 from UMES with a B.S. degree.
While residing in Dorchester County her employment included the Dorchester County Public School System; director for the Little Totland Day Care Center in Cambridge; and Generation to Generation Day Care Center in Federalsburg.
On Sept. 25, 1992 she married Robert Williams Jr. and they moved to Orlando, Fla., where she resided at the time of her death.
During her residence in Florida, Mrs. Williams and her husband became Licensed Foster Care Providers. For the past 11 years the Williams have provided guidance and care for over 350 children with the ages ranging from newborn through 17 years.
While living in Florida, she attended Mount Sinai Holy Ghost Temple Church. She was affiliated with the following organizations: Orange County and Seminole Foster Care Association, holding the office of vice president; Board for Adoption Agency in Orange County; member of the State of Florida Association for Adoption; instructor for Foster Care Parenting.
During her life span, she received certificates and awards for the services to children and adults in both Dorchester County and the State of Florida.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Williams is survived by daughters, Nikki Ann Sadler, Kiara Jan Williams; son, Wesley Wayne Williams; stepson, Antwine Williams; brother, Lannie J. Seymour; sister, Geraldine Teagle; granddaughter, Simone Sadler; three stepgranddaughters, TyTina, JaNia and Destiny Williams; uncles, Rufus and Patterson Cornish; aunts, Dorothy Banks and Thelma Banks; one sister-in-law; four brothers-in-law; two nephews; three nieces; two special cousins, Ruby Banks Kane, who raised her after the passing of her parents and Deborah Foster Wooden, who was like a sister; one goddaughter, Adrea Davis; one godson, Willis Johnson and a number of cousins and other relatives and a special friend, Lisa Black.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, a son, five uncles and seven aunts.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Refuge Temple Church of God in Cambridge. A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 tonight at the church. Burial will follow the services in the Bethel Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge.
David E. Dickerson
PINETOWN - David Elmer Dickerson, 87, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
He was born Feb. 14, 1916 in Pinetown, son of the late Pauline and Wesley Dickerson.
Mr. Dickerson received his education in the public schools of Caroline County. He worked for several domestic places and his last employment was with Acme in Federalsburg. In his later years he was self-employed.
Mr. Dickerson was formerly a member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Pinetown.
He was united in holy matrimony with Hilda Matthews Dickerson of Federalsburg. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Dickerson is survived by four children, Donald L. Nichols of Harmony, David E. Dickerson Jr. of Hurlock, Margery Dickerson of Newark, Del. and Alice Williams of Federalsbug; a stepson, Clayton Baynard of Denton; one stepdaughter, Patsy Baynard of Centreville; two daughters-in-law, Gloria A. Nichols and Barbara A. Dickerson; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a number of other relatives.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Dickerson; one brother, George Dickerson; one stepson, Leon Baynard of Grasonville; a close friend, Virginia Beulah of Federalsburg.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Hurlock. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, Pinetown. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
