Agnes W. LeCompte
CAMBRIDGE - Agnes Wright LeCompte, 88, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital.
She was born Nov. 1, 1912 in Williamsburg, the daughter of the late Norman F. Wright and Cora E. Henry Wright.
On Aug. 11, 1949 she married William A. LeCompte. He died on Jan. 25, 1980.
Mrs. LeCompte had worked for about 10 years at Devos' Jewelers in Cambridge. She had been a member of Zion United Methodist Church since Oct. 14, 1956 and was also a member of the Crescent Class.
Mrs. LeCompte had been a leader of the Brownie Troops, past member of the Elks Lodge and Cambridge Country Club. She enjoyed playing bridge and canasta card games.
She is survived by a grandson, Eric Gardner and his wife, Kasia of Greensboro; a granddaughter, Cynthia Thomas and her husband, Anthony; two great-grandsons, Perry Gardner and Augustus Thomas; a sister-in-law, Marge MacLaughlin of Cambridge; one nephew and four nieces. She is also survived by two long-time caregivers and friends, Blanche Height of Cambridge and Helen Jackson of Hurlock.
Besides her parents and spouse, Mrs. LeCompte was preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Swain Gardner; a sister-in-law, Florence Vickers and a brother-in-law, Samuel H. LeCompte.
Graveside services and burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the East New Market Cemetery. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Dale L. Vroman.
Memorial offerings may be made in her memory to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613.

Herman M. Hughes
TOWN POINT - Herman M. Hughes, 81, passed away Monday night, Oct. 29, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital, after an illness of several months.
He was born Jan. 23, 1920 in Cambridge, the son of the late Herman and Georgia Calloway Hughes. He was raised and attended public schools in Cambridge and as a young man worked at the Phillips Packing Co. can shop. From 1936 to 1942 he lived in Philadelphia and worked at the Crown Can Co. there.
Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Marine Corps from December of 1942 until December of 1945. He drove an ammunition truck and participated in several invasions, including Guam, Tarawa, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He also served on several other islands in the Asiatic Pacific area.
For two years after coming out of the service, Mr. Hughes learned the auto body repair trade in Penn Yan, N.Y. and upon returning to Cambridge worked at B. J. Linthicum's Sons for 13 years. In 1967 he opened his own body and fender shop, Herman's Body Shop and because of his health sold the business in 1982. He retired in 1985 after several years of working at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery and the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
Mr. Hughes was a member of Choptank Memorial Post 7460, VFW; Dorchester Post 91, American Legion; Cambridge Moose Lodge 1211 and the Marine Corps League. He served as an active member of Rescue Fire Company for several years and attended Antioch United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Edna Marie Newcomb, to whom he was married on Oct. 18, 1969; two daughters, Carol Blanchard of Springfield, Va. and Terry H. Hurley of Cambridge; one son, Mark E. Hughes and his wife, Sharon of Cambridge; one stepdaughter, Connie Newcomb Marth and her husband, Conroy of Preston; two stepsons, Warren E. Newcomb and his wife, Diane and John W. Newcomb and his wife, Sherry, both of Cambridge; two grandchildren, Brian and Patrick Hurley; six stepgrandchildren, Angela N. Bromwell, Scott Newcomb, Stephanie Newcomb, Chad, Chase and Cayce Marth; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Brendan and Jarrett Bromwell; one sister, Doris H. Abbott of Oxford; three brothers and their wives, George L. and Colleen Hughes of Port Charlotte, Fla., Paul R. and Clare Hughes of Cooks Point and Robert A. and Diane Hughes of Galestown. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Hatter.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at the Thomas Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery in Beulah where military honors will be presented by members of the Maryland National Guard Honors Unit. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday during the hour before the service.

Alice M. Warner
EASTON - Alice Marshall Warner, 77, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born Aug. 4, 1924 in Easton, the daughter of the late John Frank and Lillie Marsh Marshall. After graduating from Trappe High School in 1942, she worked as a waitress and during her last working years was a store clerk, until her retirement in 1986.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Easton Lodge 1250 and an avid Baltimore Oriole fan. She was very people-oriented and spent most of her free time with her family, friends and visiting people in nursing homes.
In addition to her husband, Robert Wesley Warner Sr., whom she married June 17, 1947, Mrs. Warner is survived by three children, Robert Wesley Warner Jr. and Sharon M. Linthicum, both of Easton and Melodie L. Warner of Preston; a sister, Lillian McKenrick of Easton; a sister-in-law, Margaret Marshall Smith of Easton; two grandchildren, Henry D. Linthicum IV and Patricia A. Haddaway and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Warner was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Easton. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be at the Oxford Cemetery.

Clevon T. Johnson
CAMBRIDGE - Clevon Tyrone Johnson, 52, passed away on Friday, Oct. 26, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born Sept. 20, 1949, son of Vera Johnson of Cambridge and the late Robert Nichols.
Mr. Johnson attended the public schools of Dorchester County and was a member of the Mace's Lane High School graduating class of 1967.
He served in the United States Army from 1970 to 1971. He was involved in the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in October 1971.
Mr. Johnson worked at various job in Dorchester and Talbot counties. His final employment was at Black & Decker before his health failed.
Besides his father, he was preceded in death by two sisters-in-law, a mother-in-law, two aunts, a grandmother, a brother and two uncles.
Survivors include a wife, Edith Johnson of Cambridge; a stepson, Dionte Hooper of Annapolis; two sons and a daughter, Clevon Tyrone Johnson Jr., O. J. Bailey and Takiyah Johnson, all of Cambridge; two grandsons, Clevon Tyrone Johnson III, Dionte Hooper Jr.; two granddaughters, Kanaya Bailey and Kennedy Lewis; four brothers, Ronald Johnson of Baltimore, Michael Johnson, Vincent Johnson (Iris) and Lawrence Johnson, all of Cambridge; five sisters, Dorothy Seymore of Detroit, Mich., Diana Griffith (Horace) of Brandenton, Fla., Gwendolyn Johnson, Teresa McNair and Beverly Johnson, all of Cambridge. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Mona Beasley (Robert) of Cleveland, Ohio; a brother-in-law, James Hooper Jr. of Cambridge; a father-in-law, James Hooper Sr. of Cambridge; an aunt, Louise Price of California; four uncles, Clevon Johnson of Savannah, Ga., Vernon Johnson, Cornelius Johnson and Robert Johnson (Emma), all of Cambridge.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Baptist Church in Cambridge. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Henry Funeral Home and the family will be present the final hour.
Floyd D. Aldridge
HURLOCK - Floyd Donald Aldridge (Tater), 60, passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2001 at his home.
He was born March 15, 1941 in Dorchester County, son of Dorena Aldridge Washington and the late Floyd Henry Smith.
His early childhood was spent in Hurlock. He later joined the National Guard and moved to Washington, D.C. and upon his return to Hurlock he was employed with Williams Trucking, Glacier Trucking. At the time of his death, he was employed with Allen's Food, Inc., as a long-distance truck driver.
Besides his mother, Mr. Aldridge is survived by a daughter, Serena Bolden; eight sisters, Barbara Collins, Doretha Collins, Virginia Wing and Betty Jean Flowers, all of Hurlock, Doris James of Church Hill, Geraldine Petty and Ruby Redd of Philadelphia and Diane Harrison of California; two brothers, Charles Smith of Hurlock and Isadore Aldridge of California. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Severn Collins Jr. and Samisha Collins of Cambridge; five great-grandchildren, Mikeendra Ringgold, JaHan Manokey Jr., Severn Collins III, Tabriona Collins and Teonvion Collins; three aunts, Annie Hubbard of Hurlock, Lillian Thompson of Baltimore and Margaret Aldridge of Philadelphia; one uncle, Winifred Aldridge of Hurlock and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Hurlock United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Petersburg Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Melvin R. Hurley
CAMBRIDGE - Melvin Reginald Hurley, 79 of the Neck District, died Monday night, Oct. 29, 2001 at Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born Feb. 6, 1922 in Cambridge, the son of the late Walter Hurley and Mary Gatton Hurley.
On Oct. 25, 1942 he married the former Jean Fleming.
Mr. Hurley was a self-employed painter and wallpaper hanger. He later worked for Walter Dormand as a carpenter.
He then went on his own becoming a self-employed carpenter, building and remodeling homes. Mr. Hurley was well-known for his ability and expertise in the restoration of several old homes in the Neck District area that he handled.
Mr. Hurley was one of the founders of the Lloyds Volunteer Fire Department and assisted to build the building.
He liked to fish and hunt. He also took pride in making model sailboats and birdhouses. Martin birds were of particular interest.
Surviving besides his wife of 59 years is a son, Dolan Hurley and daughter-in-law, Pamela of Cambridge; two grandsons and their family, Darren Hurley and Susan of Midlothian, Va., Todd Hurley and Debbie of Ocean City; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Hurley, Matthew Hurley and Lindsey May Hurley.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was a sister, Myrtle Townsend Cornell and three brothers, James, Eldridge and Paul Hurley.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Gloria S. Attix officiating. Burial will follow in the East New Market Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Darren Hurley, Todd Hurley, E. C. Townsend, Paul Hurley, Donald Richardson and Walter Collins.

James J. Parker
HURLOCK - James Junior "Jimmy" Parker, 68, died at his home on Skinner Run Road on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001.
He was born May 13, 1933 near Hurlock the son of the late Clemmon E. and Mary Elizabeth Strawberry Parker. His wife, Anna Mae Conway Parker, preceded him in death in 1992.
Mr. Parker was a Tin Slitter for Crown, Cork & Seal in can production, retiring after 42 years of service. He was a retired member of the United Steelworkers of America.
Mr. Parker was a member of the Emanuel Full Gospel Church in Seaford.
He is survived by nine children, Rosalee Conway of Cambridge, Tom Brown Jr. of Federalsburg, Ella Brown of Hurlock, Zandra Conway Parker of Federalsburg, James Conway Parker Jr. of Williamsburg, Delores Brown Collins of Easton, Gregory Conway of Queen Anne, Lazarus Conway of Hurlock and Vonya Parker of Federalsburg. He was also survived by 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ethel Woolford of Hurlock, Mary Parker of Wilmington, Del., Alberta Brown of Malvern, Ark. and Blanche Spicer of Cambridge; one brother, William Spencer Parker of Wilmington and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, Mr. Parker was preceded in death by a daughter, Denna Parker; a brother, Richard Parker; a sister, Cecelia P. Turner and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at the Hurlock United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Thompsontown Cemetery near East New Market.
Friends called at the church Sunday from 6-8 p.m. and may call from noon to 1 p.m. today.

Naomi Moss
CAMBRIDGE - Naomi Moss, 78, died at her home on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2001.
Mrs. Moss is survived by her husband, Neil Moss; a brother, Gordon Rothestein and sister-in-law, Blanche; a son, Daniel Moss and daughter-in-law, Jean; a daughter, Eileen Hauck and son-in-law, Roy; a son, Michael Moss and daughter-in-law, Debra; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
Friends and family attended "A Celebration of Naomi's Life" from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at her home, 907 Radiance Drive. Funeral and burial services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to Coastal Hospice, Inc., 2604 Old Ocean City Road, Salisbury, MD 21804.

Eileen L. Wood
PRESTON - Eileen L. Wood, 61, of Harmony, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born July 4, 1940 in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Louis and Agatha R. Frankewicz Kreczmer. Her husband, Joseph T. Wood Sr., preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 1994.
Mrs. Wood was a graduate of Sparrows Point High School, Class of 1958. She had worked in data entry, was tracering clerk at Waverly Press and was last working in the emergency room at Easton Hospital as a patient registration representative.
She was a member of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church in Ridgely. Mrs. Wood had been an active member of the Cub Scouts, serving as den mother and district manger. She was an artist and writer and assisted in the Adult Literacy Program, as well as enjoying her grandchildren, fishing and Christmas.
She is survived by four children and their spouses, Joseph T. Wood Jr. and Deena of Hurlock, John D. and Mona Wood of Harmony, Teresa K. and John Liszewski and Shelly R. and John Silvernail of Lisbon, N.D.; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Maria Hall of Bridgeville, Del., and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Maryland Veterans' Chapel in Beulah.

Elaine B. Hoxter
SEAFORD, Del. - Elaine Ballas Hoxter, 80, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001 at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.
She was born in Federalsburg, the daughter of the late Anthony George and Laura Margaret Smith Ballas.
She was the wife of Thomas Olin Hoxter, who preceded her in death in 1985.
Mrs. Hoxter was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Seaford, where she taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Heritage Society of Kent Island and was active in the Democratic Party working the polls on Election Day. Mrs. Hoxter was a former member of the Seaford Golf & Country Club and a former Brownie Troop Leader.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Thomasine H. and Daniel Watson of Watertown, Mass; and a brother, George A. Ballas of Federalsburg.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the St. John's United Methodist Church, Pine and Poplar streets in Seaford, Del. The Rev. David B. Humphrey and the Rev. Dr. R. Jervis Cooke will officiate. A committal service will be held 2:30 p.m. at the Stevensville Cemetery in Chester.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the services at the church on Wednesday.

Ruth B. Skinner
EAST NEW MARKET - Ruth Batton Skinner, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge. She had been a resident there since July 1999, and prior to her illness she had made her home for several years with her daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Raleigh Cline in East New Market.
Mrs. Skinner was a descendant of one of west Alabama's first settlers. She was born in 1908 on the family farm in Marengo County where she was educated.
Her husband, Grady David Skinner, whom she married in 1930, preceded her in death in 1961.
In addition to her daughter and son-in-law, she is survived by a granddaughter, Dr. Carol Leigh Neel of Colorado Springs, Colo. and two great-granddaughters.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in East New Market with Pastor Carol Terry officiating. Burial will be private.
The Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market is handling the arrangements.
Nettie Mae Dennis
RHODESDALE - Nettie Mae Dennis, 70, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
She was born March 25, 1931 at Hawkeye in Dorchester County, the daughter of the late Norman and Bertha Coleman Jones. Her husband, Gilbert Dennis Sr. preceded her in death.
Mrs. Dennis was a factory worker at local canning houses and was also a homemaker.
She is survived by five children: Gloria Dennis, Shirley Jones and Sylvia Ennels, all of Cambridge, Carolyn Jones of Vienna and Gilbert Dennis Jr. of Rhodesdale.
She is also survived by 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Norman Jones of Vienna, James Jones of Hawkeye and Arthur Jones of Bridgeville; two sisters, Lucinda Jones of Hawkeye and Gertrude Ealy of Bridgeville.
Mrs. Dennis was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Dennis; three brothers, the Rev. Frost, Walter and Marshall Jones and a sister, Mary Jones.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Reid's Grove United Methodist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Manie E. Smith
BEAUMONT, Texas - Manie "Mae" Eugenie Smith, 77, passed away Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001 at her daughter's home in Coral Springs, Fla.
She was born Nov. 25, 1923 in the Neck District of Dorchester County, the daughter of the late James F. and Rita Hill Lewis. She graduated from Cambridge Senior High School in 1941 and was an accountant for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Smith was married to Charles E. Smith Jr. for 41 years and had lived in Beaumont for the last 10 years.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Roxanne and Oran Williamson and Paula and Hector Aedo, all of Coral Springs, Fla.; a stepson, Chuck Smith of Key West, Fla. and his wife Marsha; a sister, Margaret "Teeny" Hughes of Murrietta, Calif. and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Lydia Anderson of Pasadena, Md. and her son, William "Bill" Earl Smith.
She kept strong ties with her family members in Maryland and the many life-long friends she acquired while living there.
Arrangements and services will be handled by the Neptune Society of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the hospice that serves the local area.
Shirley M. Thompson
CAMBRIDGE - Shirley Mae Thompson, 64, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001 at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
She was born March 18, 1937 in Cambridge, daughter of the late Fred Thompson and Essie Chase Stiles Thompson.
Ms. Thompson was educated in the Dorchester County School system and retired after 13 years of employment from B&G Factory in Hurlock.
She is survived by three children: Linda Thompson of Baltimore and Pamela and Darryl Thompson, both of Cambridge; five sisters: Lillian Jolley, Rose Bailey, Gloria Henry and Cora Thompson, all of Cambridge, Evangeline Brummell of Harmony; five brothers: Fred Thompson Jr., Norman Thompson, Robert Thompson Sr. and George Thompson, all of Cambridge and Samuel Thompson of Salisbury.
She is also survived by three sisters-in-law: Sandra Thompson and Barbara Thompson, both of Cambridge and Glenda Thompson of Salisbury; three brothers-in-law: James Brummell of Harmony, David Henry of Baltimore and James Jolley of Cambridge; four grandchildren, Lanise Sampson, Darryl Thompson Jr., Malaika Thompson and Shakira McPhee; three great-grandchildren; an adopted sister, Geraldine Dennis; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins and close friends, Delores Trotter and Marie Daniels.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Thompson-Green.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Salem. The Rev. Ayers will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing two hours prior to the service.
