PATRICIA A. GULICK
Patricia Ann Gulick, 59, Cumberland, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 24, 1940, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of the late Charles William and Hazel Mae (Moore) Cassaday.
She recently received a letter from Governor Parris Glendening commending her for her many years of service as a dedicated employee of the Brandenberg Center. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one son, Michael E. Gulick, Winchester, Ky.; one daughter, Sherri Lynn Gulick, Rawlings; two brothers, Charles M. Cassady and Robert Cassady, both of Cumberland; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandson.
Friends were received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, Cumberland, where a service was conducted Saturday, Oct. 30, with the Rev. Tom Landaker officiating. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.
WILLIAM P. KNOTTS
William Peter Knotts, 91, Greensboro, N.C., formerly of Cumberland, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the Greensboro Nursing Center.
Born July 6, 1908, in Crellin, he was the son of the late George Lawson and Daisy Margaret (Shaffer) Knotts. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Edna Lee (Smith) Knotts, in April 1986, and one sister, Mildred K. Carskadon.
He retired in 1973 after 47 years of service with the Western Maryland Railroad. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Cumberland, the church choir, its administrative board, and the Seper Fidelis Sunday School class. He was educated at Oakland High School and Oakland and Catherman’s Business School, Cumberland. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and its board of directors, the Chessie Federal Credit Union, and a men’s gospel quartet.
Survivors include one son, Charles L. Knotts, Greensboro, and two grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cumberland, where a service was conducted earlier today, Nov. 4. Interment was in Sunset Memorial Park.

JOSEPH L. MAUST
Joseph Lee Maust, 41, Grantsville, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, as the result of a farm tractor accident in Elk Lick Township, Pa.
Born March 28, 1958, in Meyersdale, Pa., he was a son of Paul A. and Lela V. (Bender) Maust, with whom he resided. He was preceded in death by one brother, David.
He was a member of the Mountain View Christian Fellowship, Salisbury, Pa., and was employed as a farmer.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Paul Ivan Maust, Carrollton, Texas, Ezra Allen Maust, Mount Airy, and Jonathan Mark Maust, Dover, Del.; and four sisters, Rachel Matilda Maust and Naomi Ellen Maust, both of Harrisonville, Pa., Alma Ann Eby, Dundee, N.Y., and Esther Marie Beitzel, Meyersdale.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. A service was conducted at the Mountain View Christian Fellowship on Monday, Nov. 1. Interment was in the Dry Run Cemetery, Bittinger.

MAE M. HOOVER
Mae Margaret Hoover, 78, Frostburg (Garrett County), died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born June 18, 1921, in Frostburg, she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Emma (Baker) Yutzy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Hoover, in 1978, and one son, Floyd Hoover Jr., in 1964.
She was a member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy Minick, Frostburg; two brothers, Harold Yutzy, Zihlman, and Cobey Yutzy, Borden Mines; one sister, Rosella Lottig, Philadelphia, Pa.; and one granddaughter.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Monday, Nov. 1, with the Rev. Steven Lightner officiating. Interment was in the Emmanuel Methodist Cemetery.

ELMER F. LIKENS
Elmer F. Likens, 98, Gormania, W.Va., died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, W.Va.
Born Aug. 11, 1901, in Burlington, W.Va., he was a son of the late Joseph A. and Rebecca (Rinker) Likens. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marie Rebecca Kathern (Leatherman) Likens; four brothers, Frank, Ezra, Edward, and Arthur Likens; and two sisters, Clellia Elkins and Amanda Ferrebee.
He was a retired timberman and was formerly employed with the Harco Lumber Company, Oakland. He was a member of the Fairview Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include two daughters, Opal A. Rotruck, New Creek, W.Va., and Kathern L. Knotts, Oakland; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, W.Va. A service was conducted at the Sunnyside Church of the Brethren, New Creek, on Sunday, Oct. 31, with the Rev. Ed Weaver and Pastor Roger Leatherman officiating. Interment was in the Thrush Cemetery, Antioch.
EDITH E. MARTIN
Edith Estella Martin, 82, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born March 7, 1917, in Ohiopyle, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Playford and Ersie (Metheny) Hoff. She was also preceded in death by one son, David Paul Messenger; one grandson; one brother; and two sisters.
She was Baptist by faith. She retired after many years of cooking for different eating establishments in Garrett and Preston counties.
Survivors include two sons, Willard 'Jim' Reckart, Terra Alta, and Larry Reckart, Oakland; four daughters, Nancy Harsh, Terra Alta, Patty McCrobie, Fairfield, Pa., Margie Loughry, Belington, W.Va., and Rosemary Colbert, Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister, Opal Metheny, Varnsville, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, where a service was conducted Monday, Nov. 1, with the Rev. Stanley Albright officiating. Interment was in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
EDWARD F. RICE
Edward F. Rice, 47, Mountain Lake Park, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born March 21, 1952, in Oakland, he was a son of the late James A. and Alice A. (Niner) Rice.
He was employed as a custodian at Garrett County Memorial Hospital for the past 25 years.
Survivors include six sisters, Mary E. Miller, Hyattsville, Betty A. Isaacson, Virginia Beach, Va., Ruth E. Jarrell, Eden, N.C., H. Jane Rice and Linda S. Rice, both of Mtn. Lake Park, and Martha J. Layton, Terra Alta, W.Va.; and one brother, Paul A. Rice, Mtn. Lake Park.

RUTH M. BOWSER
Ruth M. (DeVault) Bowser, 80, Friendsville, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at her home.
Born Sept. 11, 1919, in Coolspring, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Lyda (Shoaf) DeVault. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Alice Jenkins and Stella Sisler; three brothers; and one sister.
She was a member of the Asher Glade Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Ralph Bowser; two children, Cindy Detrick, Friendsville, and Susann Collins, Crellin; two sisters, Pearl Glass, Pittsburgh, and Betty Johnson, Texas; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Friends were received at the Rodney S. Turner Funeral Home, Markleysburg, Pa. A service was conducted earlier today, Nov. 4, at the Asher Glade Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Ronald Moon officiating. Interment was in the Asher Glade Cemetery.

ORVILLE R. ROUNDS
Orville R. Rounds, 85, Swanton, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Sept. 4, 1914, in Bond, he was a son of the late Edgar and Stella (Wilt) Rounds. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie Travis, Bessie Kerling, and Wilma Bittinger, and two brothers, Gerald Rounds and Charles Rounds.
He retired after 33 years of service as a mechanic with Westvaco. He was a member of the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth H. (O’Brien) Rounds; one daughter, Delores R. Baker, Canton, Ohio; two sons, Wayne A. Rounds, Oakland, and David L. Rounds, Swanton; six brothers, Albert Rounds, Bridgewater, Va., Paul Rounds, Frostburg, William Rounds, Bloomington, Ellis Rounds, Alliance, Ohio, Harold Rounds, Phoenix, Ariz., and Harvey Rounds, Kearneysville, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

GEORGE R. STANYA
George R. Stanya, 77, Oakland, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at the home of his daughter in Owasso, Okla.
Born April 10, 1922, in Republic, Pa., he was a son of the late Steve S. and Agnes (Mellow) Stanya. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elsie L. (DelSignore) Stanya in 1998.
He retired as a mine superintendent with Buffalo Coal Co., Bayard, W.Va., and prior to World War II he worked at the Cadillac Tank Plant in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Oakland, and was an honorary life member of Oakland Council #1770, Knights of Columbus.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a life member of Proctor Kildow Post #71, American Legion, Oakland.
Surviving are one daughter, Carol Ann Reese, Owasso; one son, George M. Stanya, Oakland; one sister, Ruth Bluswicz, Northfield, Ohio; and one brother, Andrew Stanya, Mt. Vernon, Ohio.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Friday, Nov. 5, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Donald Parson and the Rev. Fr. Martin Feild as celebrants. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home at 3 p.m. today.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans organizations in southern Garrett County.
