Joseph T. Evans
CAMBRIDGE - Joseph T. Evans, 82, passed away early Thursday morning, July 25, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was the husband of the former Bessie Carter.
He was born on Sept. 27, 1919, in Accomac, Va., the son of the late Lester O. and Lillian West Evans.
Mr. Evans was raised and attended public schools in Accomac. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army from May 18, 1942 until Nov. 17, 1945.
For 42 years he was employed by Colonial Stores and worked in several locations during this time. In the early 1960s he moved to Cambridge and was affiliated with the Colonial Store here, retiring in 1980. He had been in failing health for the past three years.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, to whom he was married on Oct. 16, 1974; three sisters, Frances Vian-Sty of Nassawadox, Va., Kate Harrison of Chesapeake, Va. and Louise Trader of Accomac; one brother, Roland W. Evans of Virginia Beach, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Evans was preceded in death by a daughter, Nickie Lambert and one brother, Freeman Evans.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery by the Rev. George W. Wheatley Jr. Friends will be received at the Chapel during the hour before the service.
Pallbearers will be Kerry Kahl, Alan Griep, Herb Dodson, Clark Simms, Cordell Burris and Carroll Jones.

Frank T. Robbins
Crapo - Frank Thomas Robbins, 69, died Sunday morning, July 28, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born on Feb. 8, 1933 in Wilmington, N.C., the son of Anna Jackson Jarrell of Henderson, N.C. and the late James W. Robbins.
On Dec. 13, 1997 he married the former Darlene L. Abbott.
Mr. Robbins was a self-employed floor installer.
He had been a member of the Hebron Jaycees for about 20 years.
Surviving is his wife of Crapo; four children, Marie Robbins and her companion, Allen Cash of Henderson, N.C., Annette Moore and her husband, Don of Crapo, Ginger Olearo and her husband, Chris of Henderson, N.C., Lisa Stanley and her husband, Wayne of Brodnax, Va.; two stepchildren, Dusty Abbott of Easton, Winston Abbott and his wife, Mary of Crapo; two sisters, Ernestine Stell, Mary E. Cleaton, both of Henderson, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death, besides his father, was his first wife, Jay Thomas
Robbins; a sister, Margaret Addcox and two brothers, Dick Pierce and J.W. Robbins.
Mr. Robbins was cremated and his services will be held privately.

Jeanette F. Jones
FEDERALSBURG - Jeanette E. Jones, 77, died Friday, July 26, 2002 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, Del.
She was born March 1, 1925 in Denton, the daughter of the late Dewey and Margaret Cooper Hurlock. Her husband, James E. Jones, preceded her in death on June 18, 1987.
She retired as a cook, working for restaurants in Milton & Harbeson, Del., and last worked at Margaret's Restaurant in Hurlock.
She is survived by two sons, James F. Jones of Federalsburg and George R. Jones of Union Grove, N.C.; one daughter, M. Virginia Powell of Federalsburg; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two expectant great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Hurlock of Seaford, Del. and Kenneth Hurlock of Hurlock; one sister, Irene Kennedy of Williamsburg; several nieces and nephews; three special friends, Madelyn Schulke and Elma Jones, both of Federalsburg and Margaret Wright of Seaford, Del.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George Holder and two sisters, Doris Eskridge and Margie Nickerson.
Funeral services for her will be held 1 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg. Burial will follow in the Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery in Beulah.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 tonight.

Esther O. Humphries
HURLOCK - Esther Osborne Humphries, 79, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
She was born May 25, 1923 in Easton, the daughter of the late Harold Erskine Osborne and Elsie Matthew Osborne.
Mrs. Humphries was a member of the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Hurlock.
She is survived by three sons, Robert Humphries, David Humphries, Thomas Humphries Jr., all of Hurlock; one daughter, Ann Kral of Hurlock; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Janet Ewing of Hurlock and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Humphries was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Lee Humphries Sr., on Feb. 2, 1982.
A memorial services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Hurlock with the Very Rev. Custer Ruley officiating.

Samuel K. Cephas
CAMBRIDGE - Samuel Kenneth Cephas, 59, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the University Hospital in Baltimore after a brief illness.
"Sammy" as he was called by family and friends, was born June 18, 1943 in Cambridge. Having spent most of his childhood in East New Market, he moved to Cambridge while still a youth. He resided on Bethel Street for many years.
Unable to attend public school because of being born physically disadvantaged, Sammy was taught at home by the late Mildred Kiah.
At birth, doctors predicted that Mr. Cephas would not live to be 21, yet he accomplished many things that the average person would find hard to do. He had the natural ability to repair broken electrical appliances. And he fixed many that had been trashed and thrown away.
He lived alone on Race Street and without the use of his legs and only partial use of his arm, he was self-sufficient and independent.
Mr. Cephas is survived by his mother, Mary McCray; two sisters, Carol Sydnor (Donald) and Tamela Wilson; one brother, Isaac Mark McCray (Gloria); a niece, Sha-Wanda McCray; four nephews, Donald Sydnor Jr. (Odessa), Darryn Sydnor (Kimberly), Isaac Adams and Rodney Molock; five aunts, Daisy Adams, Dorothy Purnell, Marie Brummell, Lucille Askins and Charlotte Cornish (Richard); his caretakers, Nancy and Buddy Stevens; several great-nieces and nephews and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Isaac McCray.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge with Pastor Lemuel Chester officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral. Burial will follow at the Bethel Cemetery.
William K. Jenkins Sr.
HURLOCK - William K. Jenkins Sr., 59, passed away Thursday, July 4, 2002.
He was born Jan. 7, 1943 in East New Market, son of Mary E. Jenkins and the late James Rudolph Jenkins Sr.
He attended the public schools in Dorchester County and was graduate of Mace's Lane High School with the class of 1961.
Mr. Jenkins joined Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in East New Market in November of 1963 under the Rev. N. C. Stanley.
He was a truck driver until his health failed.
Besides his mother, Mr. Jenkins, is survived by a son, William R. Jenkins Jr. (Camille) of Baltimore; a stepdaughter, Roselyn Johnson of South Carolina; a grandson, William R. Jenkins III of Baltimore; three sisters, Kay F. Slacum and Rhoda Palmer both of Hurlock and Helen Skinner (Alonso) of Suffolk, Va.; and one brother, James R. Jenkins Jr. (Shirley) of Rhodesdale. He is also survived by four aunts, Louise Jolley and Lillian Slacum of East New Market, Helen Slacum of Hurlock and Frances Fisher of Cambridge; two uncles, Rochelle Jenkins of Chester, Pa. and John Slacum of Columbus, Ohio and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tyreal and two grandchildren, Cameron and Whitney Jenkins.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at Zion UM Church in East New Market. Burial will be private.

Kaye W. Schuyler
CAMBRIDGE - Kaye W. Schuyler, 59, passed away at her home on Tuesday, July 9, 2002. She was the wife of Willard W. Schuyler Jr. and daughter of Robert Briscoe and Frances Nabb Wilson.

The Rev. Robert A. Briggs
SALISBURY - The Rev. Robert Alton Briggs, 92, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002 in the Salisbury Rehabilitation Center.
He was born May 29, 1910 in Williamsburg, Md., the son of the late William Henry and Retta Mae Briggs.
The Rev. Briggs attended schools in Dorchester County and Caroline County. He attended the School of Theology in Philadelphia, Pa. and then the A.U.M.P. School of Religion in Wilmington, Del.
He had many jobs including bus driver, welder, foreman at John N. Wright Cannery. He also worked with DCDC, Social Services and was a preacher.
The Rev. Briggs was affiliated with the A.U.M.P. Church and Connection and pastured many churches in the conference. After his retirement from the A.U.M.P. Conference he pastured at the Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Denton for 20 years.
The Rev. Briggs is survived by one son, Bobby Jones and wife, Barbara of Cordova; three daughters, Theresa Briggs of Camden, N.J., Joyce Rose of Hurlock and Shirley Jenkins of Rhodesdale; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Walter Pinder of Seaford, Del.; three sisters-in-law, Edna Briggs of Federalsburg, Lillie Mae Pinder of Baltimore and Esther Pinder of Seaford, Del.; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and many children that he helped raise and mentor.
He was preceded in death by two sons and five siblings.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Park Lane Church of God in Federalsburg. Burial will follow in Solomons Cemetery in Williamsburg.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Hurlock.
Virginia Rose Keddy
CAMBRIDGE - Virginia Rose (Ginny) Keddy, 61, of Easton, died Monday morning, July 8, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital.
She was born Oct. 28, 1940 in New Hampshire, the daughter of the late Fred Oscar Whitman and Gretchen Copp.
She was the wife of the late James William Keddy Sr.
Mrs. Keddy had been a former security guard at Coldwater Seafood Corp.
She was well-known throughout the county for her crafts.
Surviving are five children: Bobbie-Ann Davies and her husband, Jonathan, Robert A. Smith and his wife, Lisha, all of Cambridge, Kerri E. Lizotte and her husband, Denis of Northwood, N.H., Paul J. Smith and his wife, Gabrielle of East New Market, James W. Smith of Easton; 16 grandchildren: Jennifer Davies, Robert Smith, Jenny Lizotte, Kristin Smith, Jessica Smith, Katherine Lizotte, Joshua Smith, Ashley Lizotte, James V. Smith, Karen T. Davies, Elizabeth Lizotte, Jillian Smith, Telesphore Lizotte, Jacob Smith, Jonathan Davies Jr. and Dennis Lizotte. She is also survived by five sisters: Nancy Prince and Patricia Glod, both of Raymond, N.H., Linda Young of Exeter, N.H., Glenda Cotnoir of Florida, Darlene Connor of South Carolina; a brother, Raymond Copp of New Hampshire and her pet cat, General Sterling Price.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Countryside Christian Church in Cambridge. At a later date, Mrs. Keddy's cremated remains will be inurned at Kendall Pine Cemetery, Barre, Mass.

Ralph L. Ruark
WINGATE - Ralph L. Ruark, 78, died at his home on Wednesday, July 3, 2002.
He was born April 20, 1924 in Bishops Head, the son of the late Bichell and Edna Woodland Ruark.
In 1973 he married the former Shirley Banning.
Mr. Ruark was a graduate of Crapo High School.
Mr. Ruark was a self-employed waterman and boat builder. He and his father-in-law, the late Bronza Parks, designed and built a replica skipjack named "Barbara Batchhelder" for Irenee DuPont Jr. Mr. Ruark was also the vessel's caretaker since 1947. Mr. Ruark and Mr. Parks also built the "Lady Katie," "Rosie Parks" and "Martha Lewis" skipjacks. Mr. Ruark's working skipjack, "Wilma Lee" was built by his father-in-law.
Mr. Ruark was a licensed airplane pilot and owned a vintage 1947 J3Cub.
Mr. Ruark had been a member of Lakes and Straits Volunteer Fire Department and the Cambridge Yacht Club.
Mr. Ruark was not only an avid pilot and well-known boat builder, but he also enjoyed playing bluegrass music with his friends and fishing.
Besides his wife of Wingate, Mr. Ruark is survived by two daughters from his previous marriage to the late Martha Parks Todd, Patti Hall and Candace White and her husband, Gregory, all of Berlin; stepchildren: Betsy Fearins, David Bradley, Gordon Bradley, Mark Bradley; a sister, Melinda Bloodsworth of Cambridge; two grandsons, Joshua Joseph White and his wife, Natalie of Herndon, Va., Justin Bradley of Seaford, Del.; friends and neighbors, Doug Mills and Lynn Todd; a special niece, Trudy Jones of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death was his brother, Cyril Ruark.
A graveside service was held 11 a.m. Saturday at Dorchester Memorial Park. Officiating at the service was the Rev. Denzil Cheek. Burial immediately followed.

Earle E. Hoge
CAMBRIDGE - Earle E. Hoge, 93, passed away Friday, July 5, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center. He had been in failing health for several years, and had been a resident at the center for the past 2 1/2 years.
He was born Oct. 28, 1908 in Cambridge, the son of the late Otto Herman and Ida Fleischman Hoge.
Mr. Hoge had attended schools in Cambridge, and as a young man he had played baseball on the Eastern Shore Baseball League. His strong interest in baseball continued for the rest of his life.
On Aug. 11, 1931 he was married to the former Dorothy Deatrich.
Mr. Hoge had worked for the Phillips Packing Co. as an employment manager since before World War II until 1958. For about 10 years he and his wife had operated a small restaurant in Cambridge. He had retired in 1968. After retirement, Mr. Hoge had enjoyed refinishing furniture as a hobby.
He was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Cambridge.
In addition to his wife of 70 years of Cambridge, Mr. Hoge is survived by two daughters, Marian H. Slacum and Doris H. Weber, both of Cambridge; two granddaughters, Gail W. Skinner of Cambridge and Carrie S. Fishpaw of Easton; four grandsons, Charles J. Weber Jr., David S. Weber, Patrick A. Weber and Brian E. Slacum, all of Cambridge; 10 great-grandchildren: Dianna Weber, Laura Weber, Michelle Weber, Traci Weber, Jacob Weber, Susan Skinner, Cheryl Slacum, Christopher Slacum, Madeline Fishpaw and Evan Fishpaw; one brother, Franklin Hoge of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Ottilee Anderson and two brothers, Vernon Hoge and Carlos Hoge.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Joan P. Evans officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.

Charlotte L. Long
PRESTON - Charlotte Louise Long, 69, died Saturday, July 6, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born Aug. 29, 1932 at Hog Creek in Caroline County, the daughter of the late Harry M. and Lura Breeding Towers. Her husband, William Eugene Long, preceded her in death on October 1985.
Mrs. Long was a graduate of Preston High School's Class of 1949. She later became a licensed practical nurse after attending McQueen-Gibbs-Willis School of Nursing in Easton.
She worked at Memorial Hospital at Easton for a time and for the next 26 years worked for Dr. Fitzherald and Dr. Divine, now known as Eurology Associates.
Mrs. Long is survived by a son, Dale E. Long of Preston; a sister, Dorothy K. Dolby of Preston and two nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Cook and two brothers, Lester J. Towers and Webster Towers.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg with the Rev. Glenn Staehli officiating. Burial will follow in the Junior Order Cemetery in Preston. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Truman F. Salisbury
CAMBRIDGE - Truman F. Salisbury, 85, passed away early Wednesday afternoon, July 31, 2002. He was the husband of the former Jane G. Butler.
He was born Sept. 15, 1916 in Hammond, N.Y. the son of the late Fred E. and Hazel Manning Salisbury.
Mr. Salisbury was raised and attended public schools in Hammond and for a number of years worked as a farmer, and a truck driver in the Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. In November of 1983 Mr. and Mrs. Salisbury moved to Cambridge. Mr. Salisbury worked as a security guard at Airpax and a wire belt assembler at Maryland Wire Belts. He retired in February of 1996. Since March of 2000 he had resided at the Chesapeake Woods Center.
Mr. Salisbury was a member of Cambridge Lodge 66, A.F. & A.M., Pisgah chapter 126, Order of Eastern Star and a member and past governor of Cambridge Lodge 1211, Loyal Order of Moose.
He is survived by his wife, to whom he was married Oct. 11, 1939; one son, James R. Salisbury of Cambridge; three daughters, Janet Rae Steeves of Gray, Maine, Joyce Ann Baker of Rossie, N.Y., and Jari Avis Robbins of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 15 great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; three great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Leah Simonds of Alexandria Bay, N.Y., Doris Ayen of Watertown, Leona Blosenhauer of Holley, N.Y.; one brother, Glenn Salisbury of Watertown, N.Y. and several nieces and nephew.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a step-grandson.
A Masonic memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the officers and members of Cambridge Lodge 66. A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. David Wooten immediately following the memorial service. Burial will take place at a later time in East New Market Cemetery. Friends will be received on Saturday during the hour before the service.

Anita P. Kreeger
BALTIMORE - Anita Phillips Kreeger, 66, retired vice president and treasurer of the public relations firm of Wills & Associates, Inc., and a former chairwoman of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at Gilchrest Center for Hospice Care.
A Towson resident for 30 years, Mrs. Kreeger was born and raised Anita Spedden Phillips in Cambridge, daughter of the late Albanus Phillips Jr. and Anita Applegarth Spedden. She was a graduate of the Mount Vernon School, a private girls school in Washington and earned her bachelor's degree in geography from Northwestern University in 1958.
She moved to Washington and worked on the staff of Prescott S. Bush, who served from 1952 to 1963 as the Republican senator from Connecticut.
Mrs. Kreeger later moved to Baltimore with her husband, James S. Kreeger, whom she married in 1959. The couple later divorced.
After joining the Junior League of Baltimore, Mrs. Kreeger played a pivotal role in the establishment of the organization's Wise Penny thrift shop in the 5900 block of York Road, Govans.
Based on the recommendation of a friend and Junior League member, Mrs. Kreeger's financial expertise was brought to the attention of George S. Wills, founder of Wills & Associates in Baltimore. She was hired as the new company's treasurer and later named a vice president. Due to health reasons, Mrs. Kreeger retired in 1999.
She was appointed to the board of the Baltimore Choral Arts Society in 1989 and headed the board from 1992 to 1994. She was one of the architects of its Art Show Committee, which is the organization's major fund-raiser.
Mrs. Kreeger was a cat fancier and enjoyed reading about Maryland history and travel. She was also a world traveler, visiting Europe, South America and Africa.
Mrs. Kreeger is survived by two sons, Christopher Phillips Kreeger and Andrew Phillips Kreeger, both of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Norma Bell Kreeger; a grandson, Wesley James Kreeger; a brother and sister-in-law, Albanus Phillips and Faye Phillips of Cambridge; a niece, Allyson Phillips Minor and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 19 at the Church of the Redeemer, N. Charles Street at Melrose Avenue in Baltimore.
