Gladys F. Barham
HURLOCK - Gladys Faith Barham, 62, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at Life Care at Lofland Park.
She was born March 17, 1940 in Tyaskin, the daughter of the late Samuel Hull and Mary Ellen Stanley. She was raised by the late Rev. Luther Stanley.
Mrs. Barham's education began at Hurlock Elementary School and continued through Mace's Lane High School. She was employed at Bloch & Guggenheimer in Hurlock until she retired.
She is survived by her husband, James Barham of Hurlock; two daughters, Lavern Barham Moses and Teresa Barham and two sons, Gary and Lamont Barham, all of Hurlock; an adopted daughter, Vanessa Dobson of Hurlock and a stepdaughter, Carolyn Walker of Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Barham is also survived by four brothers, Robert Jones of Hurlock, Adolph and Ronald Hull of Salisbury and Gregory Hull of Tyaskin; three sisters, Denise Hull of Salisbury, Donna Hull of Tyaskin and Juanita Turner of Fruitland; a special friend, Edward Walker of Bridgeville, Del. and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held noon Saturday at Hurlock UM Church. Burial will follow in Federal Hill Cemetery in Federalsburg.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Hurlock.
Charles W. Wongus Sr.
CAMBRIDGE - Charles Woodrow Wongus Sr., 78, of Christ Rock, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2002 at Mallard Bay Nursing Home.
He was born March 12, 1924 at Kraft Neck, Vienna, the son of the late Irene Wongus Pinder and Alonzo Jones Sr.
Mr. Wongus attended Cross Road School and Vienna School. He moved to Cambridge at an early age. He was employed with Allen Tyler's Construction Co. for a number of years. He then became owner and operator of Wongus' Taxi Cab Service. He was known as "The Dependable Taxi Cab Man" for 20 years.
Mr. Wongus loved farming.
He attended Christ Rock United Methodist Church and served on the Trustee Board for a number of years.
On Aug. 30, 1948 he married Bertie Jolley and they were the parents of seven children.
Besides his wife, Mr. Wongus is survived by his stepmother, Martha Jones of Cambridge; six children - Dorothy (Leon) Pinder of Philadelphia, Pa., Laurine (Buddy) Ennals, Evelyn M. Wongus, Sherwood (Flora) Wongus and Roberta J. Wongus, all of Cambridge and Richard E. Wongus of Hurlock; one brother, Alonzo Jones Jr.; three sisters, Gloria Jones Wongus of Cambridge, Agnes (Tyrone) Seymore of Baltimore and Veronica Jones of Cambridge; 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by an aunt, Evangeline (Leon) Banks of Cambridge; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Wongus of Hampton, Va.; four sisters-in-law, Naomi Thompson of Baltimore, Rosie (Easel) Jones of Cambridge, Annie Mae (Sidney) Murray of Millsboro, Del. and Arneda (Harvey) Spencer of Cambridge; two brothers-in-law, John Jolley and James (Lillian) Jolley of Cambridge and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by special friends, Ralph Jackson Jr. and family and Bishop Woolford Sr.
Besides his parents, Mr. Wongus was preceded in death by a son, Charles Jr. and a grandson, Charles III.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Christ Rock United Methodist Church with Pastor Turhan L. Potter officiating. Burial will follow at Christ Rock Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the grandsons.
Friends may visit with the family from 7-8 p.m. Friday at the Boardley's Funeral Home, 812 Hubbard St., Cambridge.
Helen F. Adams
GOLDEN HILL - Helen F. Adams, 85, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge. She had been in failing health for several years, and had been a resident at Chesapeake Woods since 1995.
Ms. Adams was born Nov. 13, 1916 at Hooper Island, the daughter of the late Herbert C. and Lillian Creighton Adams.
She had attended schools at Hooper Island, having graduated from Hooper Island High School in 1932. Most of her life had been spent working in the seafood business. She had retired in 1987.
Ms. Adams was a communicant of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church at Golden Hill, where she was also a member of the Sanctuary Society. She had also helped take care of the church for some years.
Ms. Adams is survived by a sister, Gertrude A. Adams of Golden Hill; a niece, Evelyn Davidson of East New Market; one nephew, John R. Phillips of Golden Hill and several great-nieces and one great-nephew.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Audrey Phillips and a niece, Constance M. Perry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's of the Sea Catholic Church at Golden Hill. Burial will follow in the adjoining churchyard.

Esther V. H. Holley
CENTREVILLE - Esther Vivian Hunter Holley, 73, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born in Perquimans, N.C., the daughter of the late Charlie Frank Hunter and Essie Roundtree Hunter.
Mrs. Holley was a member of Union Baptist Church in Easton where she served as a deaconess, choir member and missionary.
She graduated from Elizabeth City State Teachers' College, now known as Elizabeth State University in Elizabeth City, N.C. Prior to her retirement, she was an elementary school teacher in the public schools of Queen Anne's County.
She was a member of the Maryland Retired Teachers Association and the Queen Anne County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
She is survived by her husband, Deacon James W. Holley of Centreville; two sons, Keebler K. Holley of Cincinnati, Ohio and James "Jeffrey" Holley of Laurel, Md.; one daughter, Natasha A. Holley of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Lillie Webster, Susie Collins and Sarah Blount, all of Elizabeth City; one brother-in-law, John Blount; two grandchildren, Eugene J. O. Holley and Brandon E. Jenkins; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held noon Saturday at the Union Baptist Church in Easton with the Rev. Fentress A. Hickman officiating, assisted by the Rev. William Reverly. Burial will be in Richards Memorial Cemetery in Easton. The family and friends may call one hour prior to the service Saturday.

Ethel E. Cooper
CAMBRIDGE - Ethel Earl Cooper, 72, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital.
She was born June 4, 1930 in Dorchester County, the daughter of the late Thomas Parrington and Lula Earl.
Mrs. Cooper was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County and was an employee of Caldwell Casting Co. for many years before her retirement.
She attended Waugh United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Cooper's survivors include her husband, Melvin Cooper; two sisters, Audrey Camper of Cambridge and Patricia Bullard of Chester, Pa.; four sisters-in-law, Minnie Johnson, Marie Cooper, Mildred Johnson and Lillian Perry, all of Cambridge; two brothers-in-law, Harold Cooper of Cambridge and Otis Cooper of New York; a godson, Michael Foster of Cambridge; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jesse Earl.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Waugh Chapel UM Church with the Rev. Dr. William T. Wallace Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Ozel F. McCoy
CAMBRIDGE - Ozel Filmore (Captain) McCoy, 50, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton after a brief illness.
He was born May 15, 1952, son of the late Filmore and Jessie Kane-McCoy.
Mr. McCoy received his education in the public schools of Dorchester County and was a 1970 graduate of Cambridge High School.
After graduation, Mr. McCoy enlisted in the United Sates Army and served his country for four years. Upon returning home, he was granted employment through the Eastern Shore State Hospital System and remained there until his health failed.
Mr. McCoy is survived by two stepdaughters, whom he raised, Carnesha Palmer of Preston and Shereda Jackson of Chestertown; Eric Hall of Cambridge; two sisters, Westine Kane and Melissa (Johnny) Tilghman, both of Cambridge; two brothers, Price (Lynn) McCoy and James McCoy, both of Cambridge; one aunt, Catherine Ennels of Cambridge; a special friend, Diane Palmer of Preston and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Timothy McCoy and three aunts, Norsey Kane, Mary Lewis and Lillie Mae James.
A funeral service will be held noon Friday at Bethel AME Church with the Rev. Anthony Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow at the Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Levi E. Stanley
HURLOCK - Levi Elton Stanley, 53, passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton after a brief illness.
He was born Aug. 6, 1948 in Cambridge, the son of Laurena Stanley of Mallard Bay Nursing Home and the late Levi H. Stanley.
Mr. Stanley attended St. Clair Elementary School and Mace's Lane High School, graduating with the class of 1966.
As a young men he attended Rock and St. Luke Church in Cambridge. He retired from the United States Air Force after serving honorably for 20 years. Mr. Stanley was employed by Maryland Environmental Services in Easton.
On Aug. 11, 1973 he was married to Carolyn P. Allen and they were the parents of two sons, Lavant and Charles.
Besides his mother and wife, Mr. Stanley is survived by three sons: Levi D. and wife, Felicia of Davis, Calif., Lavant E. of Hurlock and Charles H. of Baltimore; two daughters, Danielle of Hawthorne, Calif. and Mary and Ronald of San Francisco, Calif.; five grandchilden; one sister, Marion Stanley of Blackwood, N.J.; two brothers, McDaniel of Wilmington, N.C. and Louis of Florida. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, a mother-in-law, Vietta Ellen; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law and cousins.
Besides his father he was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara and Laverna Stanley.
Funeral services will be held noon Monday at the Hurlock United Methodist Church. Friends may call from 6-8 Sunday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge and from 11 a.m. to noon at the church Monday.
Bertha W. Prouse
CAMBRIDGE - Bertha W. Prouse, 93, wife of the late George Prouse, passed away Friday, Aug. 2, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital.
She was born Sept. 6, 1908 in Bryantown, the daughter of the late Gus and Susie Dadds Wrightson.
For most of her life she resided in Queen Anne County and as a young woman helped in the operation of the family grocery store. She was currently a resident at Sue McNew's Care Home in Cambridge.
Mrs. Prouse is survived by one cousin, Bessie Bedford of Centreville.
A memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday at the Thomas Funeral Home. Burial will take place at a later date in the family burial plot in Chesterfield Cemetery in Centreville.
Maggie J. Jones
CAMBRIDGE - Maggie Jeanette Jones, 82, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002 at the Mercy Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.
She was the mother of Purnell Jones of Cambridge, Louis and Donald Jones of Baltimore and Janet Baugh of Colleen, Texas.
Franklin W. Kirwan
EASTON - Franklin Wright Kirwan, 65, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
He was born May 28, 1937 in Linkwood, the son of the late Ralph Benjamin and Mildred Foxwell Kirwan.
After graduating from Easton High School in 1956 he served in the U.S. Air Force. Following his release from active duty he worked at Bata Shoe Store until 1965. He then went to work for Hallowell Chevrolet where he remained until retiring in 1995 due to health.
Mr. Kirwan is survived by two brothers, Philip L. Kirwan Sr. of Trappe and Russell E. Kirwan of Easton and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Percy R. Kirwan, Benjamin T. Kirwan and Ralph B. Kirwan Jr. and one sister, Kathleen A. Patchett.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Whitemarsh Cemetery, Trappe.
Ida H. Cohee
PRESTON - Ida Helen Cohee, 81, passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
She was born July 6, 1921 in Bridgeville, Del., the daughter of the late James Esley O'Day and Louise Wingate O'Day.
Mrs. Cohee was a school bus driver and poultry grower for many years. She bowled in several leagues in Seaford.
Mrs. Cohee is survived by one daughter, Dorothy T. Harding of Federalsburg; one son, Michael F. Tobat Jr. of Youngsville, La.; two grandchildren, Michael F. Tobat III of Youngsville, La. and Kelly M. Tallent of Federalsburg; five great-grandchildren; one stepson, Glen Williamson of Harmony and one brother, Carl O'Day of Bridgeville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Michael F. Tobat Sr. and her second husband, Benjamin L. Cohee.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market, where friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Good Counsel Cemetery in Secretary.
David E. White
HURLOCK - David Edward White, was born and died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. He was the son of Alan Clayton White Sr. and Judi Lofland White of Hurlock.
Besides is parents he is survived by half brothers, Alan Clayton White Jr. of Hurlock and Joshua White of Federalsburg; half sister, Sandi White of Hurlock; maternal grandmother, Betty Lofland of Federalsburg and paternal grandparents, Donald and Joanne White of Hurlock.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. today at the Unity-Washington Cemetery in Hurlock, with the Rev. Dan Walker officiating.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg.
Burton Whatley
EAST NEW MARKET - Burton Whaley, 70, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born Dec. 15, 1931 in Concord, Del., the son of the late Dorsey F. Whaley and Elsie Lessley Whaley. Mr. Whaley attended Seaford High School.
Mr. Whaley was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran having served from March 14, 1949 to Aug. 14, 1952 as a lighthouse keeper at Hooper Island Light Station, Hoopersville. This is where he met his future wife, the former Gloria Tolley, whom he married on Dec. 20, 1952.
His working career involved various facets of sign crafting, sign painting and sign making. Mr. Whaley's talent began while he was in the U.S. Coast Guard painting signs and he branched out while he was employed by DuPont in Seaford, Del. and Kirwan's Body & Fender Shop in Cambridge. Mr. Whaley was well-known for his talent and skill in his business, Whaley's Sign Shop, the business he maintained up to the time of his death for almost 50 years. He took pride in his work no matter how small, large, or for which celebrity. Years ago, he owned and operated Whaley's Flying "A" Service Station in Cambridge. It could be said of Mr. Whaley that he was a jack of all trades and a master of all.
Mr. Whaley was a long-time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Richardson Men's Bible Class and the Methodist Men. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 91 and a former member of the Cambridge Elks Lodge 1272.
Mr. Whaley enjoyed being with his family, fishing and art. His interests had also included bowling on a league and flying single engine aircrafts.
Surviving besides his wife of almost 50 years, are two daughters, Mary Whaley Kaufmann of Salisbury, Robin Whaley Dulaney and her husband, Michael of Severna Park; a son, Burton Scotty Whaley (TSGT USAF) and his wife, Lawrenda of Felton, Del.; three grandchildren, Linda Marie Dulaney, Alana Jenine Jasper, Lance Cory Jasper; four brothers, James Whaley and his wife, Bernice of Seaford, Del., Emory Whaley and his wife, Ruth Ellen of Newark, Del., Bobby Whaley and his wife, Carol, Billy Whaley and his wife, Doris, all of Seaford, Del.; two sisters, Eunice Townsend of Laurel, Del., Betty Baldree and her husband, Martin of Cleveland, Tenn. and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death, besides his parents, was a brother, Paul Whaley; sister-in-law, Betty Whaley and brother-in-law, Harry Townsend,
The family will receive friends today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Dale L. Brown. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, at Beulah.
Pallbearers will be family members.

Virginia L. Burton
CAMBRIDGE - Virginia Lee Burton, 81, passed away on Thursday night, Aug. 15, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Wesley S. Burton.
She was born May 2, 1921 at Town Point, the daughter of the late Charles Albert and Maggie Horseman Lane. She was raised and attended public schools in Dorchester County and was married to Mr. Burton on June 25, 1955.
Most of her life she was a homemaker, but for a while she worked at Bambrick's Pharmacy in Cambridge. Mr. Burton passed away on July 13, 1989 and for the past two years she had resided at the Chesapeake Woods Center.
Mrs. Burton was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. At St. Paul's she was a member of the United Methodist Women, The Gleaners Sunday School Class and the Mizpah Bible Class. She was formerly active in the DOES of the Cambridge Elks Lodge and the Auxiliary of the Cambridge Moose Lodge.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Melvin Bramble; one son and daughter-in-law, W. Perry and Annie Hall, all of Cambridge; three grandchildren, Harold Phillips Jr., Shaun Hall and Denny Hall, two great-grandchildren; one sister, Catherine Cannon of Cambridge; four half sisters, Joan Webster, Anna Mae Welcher, both of Cambridge, Rosemary Swann of Cordova, and Luvell Hubbard of Secretary; one half brother, William C. Lane of Portland, Ore. and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Burton was preceded in death by three brothers, Leon M. Lane, Emmett Lane and Charles A. Lane Jr.; two sisters, Alice Kral and Margaret Sellers; one half brother, Gilbert A. Lane and one half sister, Laura Rippons.
A funeral service was conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Dale L. Brown. Burial followed in East New Market Cemetery. Friends were received at the funeral home on Sunday during the hour before the service. Memorials may be made to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802.
Pall bearers were Tommy Hall, Bill Webster, Wesley Cannon, Shaun Hall, Denny Hall and Randall Bradshaw.
Donald J. George
CHESTER, Va. - Donald J. George, 71, passed away early Friday morning, Aug. 16, 2002 at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
He was born Dec. 20, 1930 in Pennsylvania. Although born in Pennsylvania, he was raised in Richmond by his mother and stepfather, Catherine Oakley and James W. Burton. He was a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean War and Vietnam. Upon retirement from the service he then worked for Aero Industry at Byrd Airport in Richmond.
Mr. George is survived by his wife, the former Doris Insley, to whom he was married on Jan. 5, 1962; one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Winston Davis of Chester, Va.; one son, Billy Burton of East New Market; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Mary Spence of Cambridge; one brother, Dennis George and his wife, Lillie Mae of Highland Springs, Va.; several brothers and sisters-in-law, Kay Abey, Ronald and Nilda Insley, Carl and Betty Insley and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald D. George.
A graveside service will be conducted today at 1 p.m. in Dorchester Memorial Park by the Rev. A. Delmer Willey Jr. There will be no calling hours.
Memorials may be made to the Heart Fund, c/o Lorraine Dickerson, 10 Harris Drive, Cambridge MD 21613.

Sarah E. Lloyd
ATLANTIC, N.C. - Sarah Elizabeth Lloyd, 90, passed away on Friday, Aug. 16, 2002.
A native of Delaware, she had made her home with her daughter, Carole Robinson and granddaughter, Erica Yarrington for the past year.
Mrs. Lloyd was a special "Nan" and "Mom Mom" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved cooking and sharing her dishes with family and friends.
In addition to her daughter, Carole, she is survived by a daughter, Dolores Dixon and husband, Ed of Cambridge; a son, Gene Lloyd and wife, Patricia of Elkton; a brother, Raymond Anderson of Wilmington, Del. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Keith Lloyd, Holly Sporidis, Allen Dixon, Galen Robinson, Elisa Thompson and Erica Yarrington; and eight great-grandchildren: Kate and Laura Dixon, Sarah, Jessica and Kyle Lloyd, Yanni Sporidis, and Caroline and Marissa Thompson.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Taylor.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday at the Atlantic UM Church. The family received friends during the hour preceding the service. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery in Newark, Del.
