Barbara S. Layton
HURLOCK - Barbara Smith Layton, 68, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born Nov. 23, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late William Vickers Smith Sr. and Clementine Troup Smith.
Mrs. Layton volunteered at the Nearly New Shop in Hurlock and at Hurlock Elementary School. She had worked as an election judge for many years in Hurlock.
She was a member of the Unity Washington United Methodist Church in Hurlock.
Mrs. Layton is survived by her husband, Walter Reynolds Layton of Hurlock; two daughters, Cynthia L. Eberspacher of Hurlock and Cathy L. Wheeler of Blairsville, Ga.; seven grandchilden; one brother, William V. Smith Jr. of Aberdeen, Texas and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Walter R. Layton Jr.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Unity Washington Cemetery in Hurlock with the Rev. Ruth Tull officiating.

Louis P. Barnes
HURLOCK - Louis Paul Barnes, 77, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born Nov. 8, 1924 in Baltimore, the son of the late Louis Ferdinand Barnes and Clara Emma Fischer Barnes. His first wife, Ida Melba Jones Barnes, preceded him in death.
Mr. Barnes was a truck driver for the former Modern Transfer Co. He was baptized at a Lutheran Church in Baltimore.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Ruth Barnes, whom he married on Nov. 20, 1965; three daughters, Edna Jackson of Westminster, Betty Reems and Bonnie Sokolowski, both of Florida; four stepchildren, Charles Henry Miller Jr. of Alabama, Janet Lynn Keplinger of West Virginia, Paul David Miller of Baltimore and Valerie Marie Rodney of Virginia; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Newcomb of Cambridge; a cousin, Robert Fischer of Baltimore; an uncle, Paul Fischer of Baltimore; a devoted companion, his dog, Nikki Boy Barnes and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and first wife, Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by three brothers, Joel Cook, John Cook and Charles Barnes.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg. Burial will be at Glen Haven Cemetery in Glen Burnie at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Herman W. Eberhard
EASTON - Herman William Eberhard, 79, died on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 200 at Talbot Hospice House.
He was born Nov. 19, 1922 in Cordova, the son of the late Henry S. and Clarrisse Rieck Eberhard. After graduating from Cordova High School in 1941, he farmed and then worked as a mechanic at a local auto dealer and farm dealership.
During the 1960s Mr. Eberhard and his wife owned and operated Bill's News and Variety Store in Easton, as well as a newspaper route. Following the sale of this business, he worked as a lime salesman for M. & D. Supply in Easton where he retired in the early 1980s. He then worked part-time at the Hog Neck Golf Course.
A lifelong resident of Talbot County, Mr. Eberhard was a lifetime member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church where he was a former choir member and served as the treasurer for many years. A member of the Easton Elks Lodge 1622 he had also served as a substitute member of the Talbot County Board of Election Supervisors.
Mr. Eberhard is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn D. Schmick, whom he married in Preston on Sept. 21, 1946; a daughter, Marilyn Heinemann and her husband, Charles of Taylorsville, N.C.; a son, Mark H. Eberhard and his wife, Peggy of Fort Thomas, Ky.; a sister, Monie Muchow of Buda, Texas and four grandchildren, Paul W. Heinemann and his wife, Jessica, David J. Heinemann, Chris Eberhard and Jennifer M. Eberhard.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Easton where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Memorial Park, Easton.

Norma Lee Lloyd
SALISBURY - Norma Lee Lloyd, 69, a former resident of Cambridge, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
She was born April 3, 1933 in Salisbury, the daughter of the late Howard Mills and Hilda White Mills. Her husband, Burdell l. Loyd, died in 1987.
Mrs. Lloyd is survived by a daughter, Kim Leslie Savage and her husband, Michael of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; four sons, Charles Clayton Ayers III and his wife, Debbie of Smyrna, Del., Lt. Colonel Select Todd Linwood Lloyd and his wife, Debbie of Quantico, Va., Mark Lloyd and his wife, Cindy of Florida and Michael Lloyd and his wife, Nancy of Newark, Del.; two sisters, Mary Belle Lewis of Salisbury and Charlotte M. Noble and her husband, Ronald of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a niece and two nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Bounds Funeral Home in Salisbury where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Howard L. Gordy Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow in Parsons Cemetery.

Dorothy F. Majors
LINKWOOD - Dorothy F. Majors, 74, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
She was the wife of Kenneth H. Majors and mother of Brenda Lee Majors.

E. Virginia Wheatley
ELKRIDGE - E. Virginia Wheatley, 71, passed away on Monday, Aug. 26, 2002 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. She was the wife of the late Richard George Wheatley and a long-time resident of Cambridge.
She was born Dec. 15, 1930 in Crapo, the daughter of the late William Elmer and Georgia Luvenia Foxwell Mills. Mrs. Wheatley was raised and attended public schools in the Crapo area and for most of her life resided in Cambridge.
She was married to Mr. Wheatley on Sept. 16, 1967 and was employed at Chun King as a lab technician. Mr. Wheatley passed away on May 23, 2000. Since the following August she had made her home in Elkridge.
Mrs. Wheatley is survived by two sons, William J. Mills of Severn and David L. Mills of West Friendship; four grandchildren, Andrew Mills, Sinclaire Mills, Garrett Mills and Adam Mills and four nieces: Mary Ann Todd, Joyce Ann Jarrett, Susan Wingate and Jean Vickers.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Jarrett and Rebecca Parks.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge by Minister Gary Selby. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday during the hour before the service.
Samuel Bines
CAMBRIDGE - Samuel Bines, 78, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2002 in Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 21, 1923 in Florida, son of the late Queen Elizabeth Bines and James Bines of Florida.
Mr. Bines moved to Cambridge at an early age, where he was a factory worker. He retired from Bumble Bee Seafood Factory in Cambridge. He was a minister for many years.
Mr. Bines is survived by a sister, Christine Holmes; a brother, Larry Bines and a sister-in-law, Catherine Bines, all of Florida. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Irene Thomas of Cambridge and Leroy Beasley of Oxon Hill; six grandchildren and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fairey Bines; four sisters, Geneva Grant, Doilly Mae Hartfield, Maggie Crawford and Beatrice Harris, all of Florida.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at the National Church of God, 809 Washington St., Cambridge, where friends may call two hours prior to the service. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge.
William L. Ross II
TRAPPE - William Lonnie Ross, II, 38, passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002.
He was born Feb. 9, 1964 in Cambridge, son of Maidie Louise Thomas Ross and the late William Lonnie Ross Sr.
Mr. Ross received his education in the Talbot County Public Schools. He attended Scott's United Methodist Church in Trappe and at an early age participated in the Sunday school programs.
His last employment was with Len and Glen Construction Co. and he would also work with his brother-in-law in his concrete business. During his spare time he was remodeling his mother's house.
Mr. Ross was involved in many self-taught skills. He could take apart and fix almost anything and repaired cars and motorcycles. He built his own motorcycle from the frame up and helped his friends maintain theirs.
His father, who also had a love for motorcycles and lost his life to similar circumstances, preceded him in death.
Besides his mother, Mr. Ross is survived by a son, William Lonnie Ross III; two daughters, Isis and Ja'Mesha, all of Trappe; a sister, Cassandra Ross Cornish and brother-in-law, Sheldon Cornish, both of Easton; two nephews, Sheldon II and Sean Cornish, both of Easton; a special friend, Tandra (Candy) Sydnor of Trappe and a number of cousins. He is also survived by six uncles: Joseph, William C., John and Kennard Thomas, all of Trappe, Glenwood Hayman of Delaware and Earl Gilliard of Philadelphia; 10 aunts: Naomi Diane, Mildred Thomas, Virginia Hayman, all of Trappe, Carolyn Thomas of Easton, Rosalyn Thomas of North Carolina, Frances Askins of Cambridge, Doris Gilliard of Philadelphia, Joanne Murray of Trappe, Cora Brice of Easton and Jacquelyn Thomas Gibbs of Trappe.
A funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. today at Scott's UM Church in Trappe with the Rev. Joseph Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Trappe.
There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service today.

Hearl B. Ross
HOOPERSVILLE - Hearl Bailey Ross, 52, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002 in Hoopersville. He was often called "Billy."
He was born April 13, 1950 in Dorchester County, son of the late James Johnson and Nettie Ross.
Mr. Ross attended the public schools of Dorchester County. His first 20 years of employment was spent as a waterman for the Lewis Brothers and the last 20 years as an employee for the Rippons Seafood Co.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Ross and William Ross and a sister, Joyce B. Ross.
Mr. Ross' survivors include two brothers, Norman Ross of Baltimore and Anthony Ross and his wife, Velma of Mardela; a niece, Vanessa Ross of Cambridge; two nephews, Nathaniel and Cynthia Chester of Hurlock and Leon Ross of Baltimore; a great-niece, Charisee Ross of Washington and numerous cousins.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Henry Funeral Home in Cambridge.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Clarence R. Comegys
CAMBRIDGE - Clarence R. Comegys, 73, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born Feb. 4, 1929 in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Charles and Mary Agnes Klaus Comegys.
Mr. Comegys had attended schools in Edgemere. For over 30 years he had worked for Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore. He had retired in 1977.
He was the husband of the late Mary Elizabeth Rodweller Comegys. Mr. Comegys had made his home in Cambridge since 1977.
His survivors include two daughters, Clare L. Comegys and Christine K. Comegys Seba, both of Baltimore; two sons, Robert L. Comegys and James L. Comegys of Baltimore; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Comegys and Louis Comegys, both of Baltimore and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary White and three brothers, Charles Comegys, James Comegys and Bruce Comegys.
A memorial service will be held in Baltimore at the convenience of the family.

Rosie Sanchez
CAMBRIDGE - Rosie Sanchez, 49, passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2002.
She was born Dec. 7, 1952 in Baltimore, daughter of Mack and Dorothy Koger. She was educated in Edgmere.
Mrs. Sanchez worked at Airpax and Bonanza until she became ill. Then she volunteered her time at Dorchester General Hospital with the Auxiliary committee. She was a childcare provider and a nurse maid to her former pastor.
Mrs. Sanchez spent time crocheting, writing in her diaries, collecting elephant figurines, growing plants, traveling, caring for her granddaughters and her birds, Sunshine and Jireth.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel Sanchez of Seaford, Del.; her children, Timothy Baylor II of Greenville, N.C., Trina Baylor of Cambridge and Renee Gordon of Federalsburg; a sister, Vivian K. Smith of Bowie; brothers, Leon Koger, Mack Koger, Lawrence Koger, Linkwood Koger and Joseph Koger; grandchildren, Timotheous Baylor, Ronnee Gordon and ReOnna Gordon, Timothy Baylor III and Jqwain Baylor; son-in-law, Ron Gordon of Federalsburg; daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Baylor of Windsor, N.C.; brother-in-law, Steven Smith of Bowie and a number of nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by godchildren: LaShawn Cornish of Cambridge, Tanis Johnson of Cambridge, Jermel Jackson of Greenbelt and Jalessa Young of Cambridge and special friends, Llord Mitchell, Geraldine Stanley, Edward Opher and Francine Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Refuge Temple Church of God in Cambridge where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Edgar I. Gore
CAMBRIDGE - Edgar Irving Gore, 79, died Tuesday night, Aug. 27, 2002 at the University of Maryland Hospital Cancer Medical Center in Baltimore.
He was born June 25, 1923 in Crapo, the son of the late Irving Gore and Beulah Kirwan Gore.
Mr. Gore has been a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge since April 28, 1935.
Mr. Gore was a World War II Navy veteran.
On Sept. 5, 1953 he married the former Marian Fitzhugh.
Mr. gore was a very active member of BPO Elks Lodge 1272 since the early 1950s, where he served on many committees and was a Past Exalted Ruler. He was also Maryland State President from 1970-71.
Mr. Gore worked at Cambridge Wire Cloth for many years. For most of his working life he was employed as a superintendent for Charles E. Brohawn & Son Contractors.
Surviving besides his wife of almost 49 years is a daughter, Diane Gore Harrington; a son, Timothy Irving Gore, all of Cambridge; two grandsons, Brian and Brooke Harrington; a great-grandson, Jonathan Harrington; two step-grandchildren, Chelsea and Matt George; a sister, Margaret Gore Moosegian and her husband, Bill; sister-in-law, Marjorie Cave; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was a brother, William Webster Gore.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge, where at 8 p.m. a memorial service will be provided by the Elks Association.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Doug Ridley, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Dorchester Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Bill Moosegian, Frank Hurley, John Matthews, Brian Harrington, Brooke Harrington and Don Moore.

Ruth A. Ford
LUTHERVILLE - Ruth A. Ford, 90, passed away Friday, Aug. 23, 2002 at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Lewis M. Ford and a former resident of Dorchester County.
She was born Oct. 31, 1911 at East New Market, the daughter of the late Henry Jacob and Caroline Gerber Weber.
Mrs. Ford was raised in Dorchester County and was a graduate of Cambridge High School. In 1932 she graduated from the Cambridge-Maryland Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. She was employed for some years at the General Motors, Fisher Body Plant in Baltimore as a nurse.
Mrs. Ford is survived only by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Lewis M. Ford Jr.; six sisters: Lena Grupe, Alice Venables, Hedwig Vickers, Gertrude Webster, Margaret Brannock and Louise Schlesinger and three brothers: Ernest Weber, Henry Weber and George W. Weber.
A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge by the Rev. Joan P. Evans. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park.

Thomas J. Woolford
CAMBRIDGE - Thomas James Woolford, 81, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge. He was the husband of Lula M. Woolford.
He was born April 7, 1921 in Dorchester County, the son of Mary Woolford and the late the Rev. Wilbert Woolford Sr.
In addition to his wife and mother, Mr. Woolford is survived by four sons: Thomas (Faye) Sutton of New Jersey, Eric Woolford, Lawrence Dennis and Alonso Dennis, all of Cambridge; four daughters: Shirley (Eugene) Slater of Upper Marlboro, Janice Wheeler of Fort Worth, Texas, Tomasene Woolford of Cambridge and the Rev. Lena M. Dennis of St. Paul, Minn.; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Wilbert (Carla) Woolford of Philadelphia, Pa., Louis Woolford of Dover, Del., Frederick Woolford of Cambridge; four sisters, Bertha Pinder of Salisbury, Gloria Woolford and Bernice Molock, both of Cambridge, Rosetta (Leroy) Montgomery of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother-in-law, Elmer (Geraldine) Dennis of Rhodesdale; two sisters-in-law, Emily Jackson of Vienna and Nona (Phillip) Dockins of Rhodesdale and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his father, the Rev. Wilbert Woolford, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Ella Dennis Killette and two sisters, Alice Cornish and Carla Flowers.
Funeral services will be held noon Monday at Bethel AME Church in Cambridge. The family will receive friends immediately following the services.

Herbert H. Vaughn
BALTIMORE - Herbert Hoover Vaughn, a former resident of Cambridge, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at the Long Green Nursing Home in Baltimore.
He was the father of Portia Holiday of Cambridge, Karen Vaughn and Bridger Vaughn of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was the brother of Ida Davis, Dorthea Chandler of Baltimore and Geraldine Cornish of Cambridge.

Sharon W. Jones
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Sharon Wanerus Jones, 39, passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002 at Palm Springs Hospital.
She was born Nov. 19, 1962 in Chicago Heights, Ill., the daughter of Philip Wanerus and Florence Collins Wanerus of Colorado. Mrs. Wanerus was raised in Cambridge.
Mrs. Jones graduated from Thompson Valley High School in Loveland, Colo. in 1980; the University of Colorado in 1984; and Regis College in Denver, Colo. in 1986.
She had worked at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver; St. John's Hospital in Los Angeles and was a consultant and service representative for 3M, Health Information Services.
Mrs. Jones' survivors include her husband, Jeffrey Jones of
Rancho Mirage, Calif.; sons, Casey and Noah of Rancho Mirage; sisters, Priscilla Hughes of Oakland, Calif., Jill Longwell of Ft. Collins, Colo. and Wendi Higgins of Greer, S.C. She is the niece of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Collins of Cambridge.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Sept. 7 at the S.W. Community Church, Indian Wells, Calif. Burial will be at the Wellwood Murray Cemetery, Palm Springs, Calif.
